Two questions

Hey, Hersfold. It's me, BlueCaper! Listen, I have two questions to ask you. First, me and two other relatives of mine (User:JP4Jackpot and User:redhearts11) formed a unified account called User:BjrTriad. They do not know about this yet. The original accounts are still intact as well. It says on the user page that no sock puppetry will be carried out with this account, but I myself have seen several messages of deceit and lies on Wikipedia. I am not sure if it would be okay or not to have this account as an established user, so if it is not justified, you are welcome by all means to delete it.

Second, how do you adopt an article?

Please get back to me ASAP!!! --BlueCaper (talk) 18:42, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

  • Thanks, Mgm. :-) BlueCaper, I'm not sure exactly what you mean about adopting an article; so far as I'm aware, we don't really have such a program set up. You're certainly welcome to choose an article to focus your work on, as that's often how articles get to GA or FA status, although there's no formal process for that. You can also consider joining a Wikiproject, many of which hold "collaboration of the week" programs on certain articles. Does this help answer your question? Sorry for the long delay in answering, I haven't been around for over a month for various reasons. Hersfold (t/a/c) 14:50, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

AfC userbox

Hi Hersfold, would you mind if I move the AfC userbox into template space? Cheers, Martin 12:57, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

As you didn't reply I have moved it. Feel free to revert if you want it back! Martin 12:58, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
That is perfectly fine, although thanks for asking! Sorry I didn't get back to you, I've been out for over a month for various reasons. Hersfold (t/a/c) 14:55, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

AfC news

Dear AfC participant,

  1. Msgj and Tnxman307 are organising the AfC challenge! It's a little competition to help improve some of the articles created through AfC and we are hoping that everyone will get involved. For level 1, you just need to bring a stub up to Start-class. Level 2 is improving a Start-class article to C-class. And so on. To get involved or for more information please see the competition page.
  2. Those of you who haven't reviewed an article recently might not have noticed the new process that was implemented this year. Reviewing articles is now more enjoyable than ever :) You might like to give it a try. All articles waiting for review are in Category:Pending Afc requests. (Please read the updated instructions.)
  3. Please consider adding {{AFC status}} to your userpage to keep track of the number of articles waiting for review. At the time of writing we are officially backlogged, so help is needed!
  4. There is currently a proposal to bring the Images for upload process under the umbrella of WikiProject Articles for creation. The rationale is that both processes are designed to allow unregistered users to take part more fully in Wikipedia, and partipants in each process can probably help each other.

If you no longer wish to receive messages from WikiProject Articles for creation, please remove your name from this list. Thank you.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas to you!
Have a very merry Christmas, and a great new year! This greeting (and season) promotes WikiLove and hopefully this note has made your day a little better. Spread the WikiLove by wishing another user a Merry Christmas, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past, a good friend, or just some random person. Regards (and Season's Greetings!) from Stwalkerstertalk ] 21:04, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Adoption

I am looking to be adopted after a user recommended it. Also, I have been told off by another user but I do not follow their reasoning. Please see my talk page for the discussion we had. I will attempt to clarify if necessary if you do choose to help! Thanks! (BTW, sorry I put this request on you user page, by mistake! I have remarked it there.) Jubilee♫clipman 06:26, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Hello, Jubilee. Sorry for the late response, I haven't been around for the past month for various reasons. It looks like you've since been adopted by Martin (and sorted out your other issue); I'm sure he'll do an excellent job for you, but I'm always open for questions if he doesn't seem to be around himself. Happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 15:08, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Need help

Hi there, I seem to be having problems with user:Sarvagnya again; this is the editor on whose page you had left this post after the last time I contacted you. This time he hasn't personally attacked me, but rather removed quite a bit of content from Talk:Kannada literature, 1600–1900 CE, a page whose name was recently changed. Since the page move, in turn, is connected to a Featured Article Review: Kingdom of Mysore and, in particular a post of mine there (please scroll to the bottom in this link), I had been collecting information on the talk page on why the page move was both controversial and incorrect. I did this in two posts beginning with: A record of the creation of this page and its name changes; in addition I had a third post on the sources, which I considered biased. I have left messages for user:Sarvagnya both on the article talk page and his talk page, but I thought I'd leave a post here as well to keep you in the loop. Regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 01:06, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Do you still need help with this? I'm going to try to get hold of you on IRC as well. Hersfold (t/a/c) 15:11, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Hey

Could you adopt me? Here on wikipediaIt's Me :) O Yea its me.. Washington95 (talk) 21:36, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Replied on your page. Hersfold (t/a/c) 15:22, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Help with deleting an article

Remember when I spoke to you about the Biodiversity and Evolution article and how it was absolutely horrendous? Well, there's a copy of it on the Biodiversity article. Because it's so redundant and because (excepting my edits and SmackBot's cleanup) it has been inactive for about a month, is it possible for me to nominate it for deletion (or preferably, speedy deletion)? And if so, how can I do this?

Merry Xmas! MM Murphy2010 (talk) 22:39, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

(sorry... it's Biodiversity and evolution I didn't want to edit my previous edit, as it is your page)

Hey, sorry I haven't responded until now. There's actually a better outcome than deletion; since the section is almost exactly the same, it's very likely someone tried to merge the pages together, but forgot to redirect Biodiversity and evolution. Since the history of that article needs to be kept to show who did what in that section, I'm not going to delete the article, simply redirect it to the duplicate section. This is the ugly copyleft stuff that gives us admins headaches when crap like this happens; in many cases, we have to do this incredibly messy fix that involves deleting, moving, and undeleting pages to get all the histories to merge together correctly. I probably should do that here as well, but I'm afraid if I delete Biodiversity (which unfortunately is the one that has to be deleted in this process), I'd melt the servers and cause the site to crash for half an hour. Big pages tend to do that, and they won't even let us delete some of the really big ones for just that reason. This is more-or-less sufficient anyway, and it allows you to continue to work on Biodiversity and evolution, using what was there as a starting point. Hope your break's going well! Hersfold (t/a/c) 15:42, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

The thing is... Biodiversity is fine; in fact, the corrections that I wanted to make to the duplicate section have already been made. The problem is, it looks like someone split the page to make corrections or to build off of it, and never did anything about it on biodiv. and evolution. I'm not asking to delete the Biodiversity page (why do you say that the biodiversity page has to be deleted? I'm ignorant re: the deletion process).

Anyway, my break is going well. Boring, but going well. Thanks for asking.

Murphy2010 (talk) 21:10, 4 January 2009 (UTC) / MM

Biodiversity doesn't have to be deleted; I was talking (in very little detail, sorry about that) about a process through which administrators can merge the histories of two pages together, which we sometimes have to do when somebody makes a mess of things. It goes like this:
  1. Editor A wants to move (rename) Original to New page. They're either new or haven't done a move before, so they copy the contents of Original and make a new page at New page.
  2. Editor B comes by later, notices the mistake, and points it out to Admin. Admin bashes his head on the desk, leaves an irritated but usually helpful pointer at Editor A's talk page, and gets to work.
  3. Admin deletes New page temporarily under CSD G6, citing "cut & paste fix" as the reason.
  4. Admin (correctly) moves Original to the newly vacated title at New page.
  5. Admin then restores all the revisions he deleted during step 3, and rollbacks him/herself as needed to make sure the most recent version of the article is showing.
The reason we have to do this is that the GFDL requires all edits to an article be properly attributed to whoever made them. When someone makes a cut & paste move like this, they're effectively claiming the collaborative work of a group of other editors entirely as their own; this can sometimes be averted by noting the source of the content in the original edit summary ("content copied from Original"), but that only works in a limited number of cases. This situation with Biodiversity and Biodiversity and evolution is one of those cases; since the content of B&E came from Biodiversity in the first place, redirecting it back there won't leave any questions about who wrote what; it all obviously came from Biodiversity.
It's an ugly and confusing mess, but fortunately all a moot point since, as you said, everything is fine now. I'm just babbling, and complaining about janitor work. :-) Hersfold (t/a/c) 05:08, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Yay! Thanks for clearing that up with me. Murphy2010 (talk) 16:36, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

I forgot to ask, how's break going for you? Murphy2010 (talk) 16:37, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Pretty good, just got back from vacation, so now it's back to this and other work I need to get done before the new semester. Bleah. See you around. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:40, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Cheats

That block made me even more ardent to find a cheat website where you can give cheats but do not have to give personal information. I found the perfect place, and what's more: it's wiki-based!!! [APPLAUSE] It's called Wikicheats. You can tell by just looking at the page's similarity to Wikipedia pages that it takes some ideas from Wikipedia -- it's not just the wiki format. I have created a non-stub cheat page on it already, by myself. It's orphaned, but still according with the guidelines.

I have also vowed that if I see a instance of adding bad, unencyclopedic material to Wikipedia by an established user, then I will do my best to direct them to a place to where they may post that material. That block you imposed on my account really helped. So, thanks.
