Commas

[edit]

I'm just asking if you'll reconsider your approach to comma-related changes on Wikipedia. A large percentage of your changes actually introduce problems where there were none before. I know that you must be receiving notifications about the large number of your edits being undone, so I feel a little silly writing this, but I notice that the issues are not stopping. I can tell from your username that you have good intentions, but you are creating more work for your fellow editors. Would you please consider halting changes to punctuation until you better understand the rules around them? I appreciate it. EricEnfermero (Talk) 03:31, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I just stumbled across your edits by chance. I'm not referring to any specific edit right now, just want to point you towards the official Wikipedia:Manual of Style. That is the only style guide which matters for Wikipedia editing. Please take note of MOS:COMMA and MOS:OXFORD in particular, where the issues around commas are discussed. Please be careful, as getting a comma wrong can significantly change the meaning. Also, beware of being seen to be making "mass changes", "sweeping changes", or similar. I'm not accusing you of that or saying that your editing falls under those descriptions, just some friendly advice to beware of and avoid that. There certainly will be plenty of places in Wikipedia that do need the type of fixes that you have been doing, just be thoughtful and careful about it. If something is not your preferred style, but is not actually incorrect/invalid/problematic, it's often best just to leave it unchanged unless you are making bigger changes to the same section of an article. Thanks. Murph9000 (talk) 23:46, 22 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A photograph of an Ethiopian lion (P. l. roosevelti or P. l. abyssinica)

Hi, what do you think about that photograph that I mentioned in the talk page of 'Lion'? Leo1pard (talk) 18:17, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.

Edit summary content is visible in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. You can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → Tick Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. Thanks! Olidog (talk) 09:59, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summaries

[edit]

There is no sense in which edits like this are "grammar edits" -- please choose more appropriate edit summaries. More broadly, I looked over a random sampling of perhaps 30 of your recent edits. Your median quality edit is probably a minor improvement in wording that does not affect the meaning, but the mean impact of your edits might actually be negative because of a small number edits like this one. If you're going to do this little stuff, please spend enough time on each one so to be confident you are not destroying meaning! --JBL (talk) 13:54, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JBL, the reason why I described the second edit you pointed out as a grammar edit is because my edit made the sentence more grammatically correct. Before I edited it, the sentence said this: "It requires the player to kill all enemy units before destroying the player's castle." As the sentence was written, it was unclear who was destroying the player's castle, the player himself or the enemy units. So my correction read like this: "It requires the player to kill all enemy units before they destroy the player's castle." The word "they" definitively tells the reader that it is the enemy units (which is plural, as in they) that may destroy the player's castle, not the player (which is singular). It was just a grammatical edit for clarity, as I felt the original sentence was slightly unclear. As to the first edit, I think that period placing is to do with grammar. If not, in the future I will write "period placing" instead. Overall, thank you for your helpful criticism (especially for showing me exactly which edits you found disagreeable). Cheers, Here2help
Hi Here2help,
I'm afraid you're mis-reading the second diff (which is really my fault: I linked by revert, not your initial edit) -- your explanation is a very good explanation of why I reverted you! About the other one, I disagree that period placement has to do with grammar ("the set of structural rules governing the composition of clauses, phrases, and words") but either way it would be great if you could use more precise edit summaries in situations like that. I am glad that you found my comments helpful.
All the best,
JBL (talk) 19:36, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

JBL, Oh, I see. If that was your edit, then good edit lol, I can see why you reverted my previous edit. I will be more careful next time. Thanks! - Here2help

Glossophobia

[edit]

Hi, just want to explain this edit: I was trying to fix the CS1 error caused by one of the refs, template the other, and fix the hyphenation of one of the authors' names. Hope you don't mind me restoring the edit. Me, Myself & I (☮) (talk) 15:19, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A kitten for you!

[edit]

The Teahouse can be quite helpful in the early stages of climbing the Wikipedia learning curve and finding your feet. It looks to me that your intentions are generally good, so hang in there and make use of the new editor support resources if/when you feel the need for them. Kittens can be quite helpful for the stressful moments.  :)

Hi! I noticed your signatures don't contain a link to your user or talk page, as per WP:SIGLINK. If you didn't know, you can leave a signature using 4 tildes (~~~~). If you do use this and have edited your signature, then it would be helpful to other editors to include the links. Thanks! Olidog (talk) 07:48, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"that"

[edit]

"...the belief that he is a powerful wizard..." means the same thing as "...the belief he is a powerful wizard..."

The extra word you added did not add meaning. The extra word that you added did not add meaning. - SummerPhDv2.0

Hi Summer,
The word wasn't added for meaning. It was added for grammar reasons. I think, "I hold the belief that he is a powerful wizard," is more grammatically correct than, "I hold the belief he is a powerful wizard." But if you dislike my insertion of the word "that" and ultimately think that both versions are fine, I don't mind if you revert my edit. Here2help (talk) 03:45, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Similar username

[edit]

Did you know there is an administrator, User:HereToHelp, with a similar name as yours, or are you perhaps related to him? Ribbet32 (talk) 07:01, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ribbet32,

I didn't know that, and I am the furthest thing from an administrator lol :P Here2help (talk) 07:03, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Ribbet32 and HereToHelp: Do you think this is cause for a change of username? Olidog (talk) 20:47, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Most people will be able to see the difference between "To" and "2"; unless HereToHelp has a problem with it, I don't think so. Ribbet32 (talk) 23:22, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, let me know. I don't mind changing my username. Here2help (talk) 23:25, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! I don't think it's a big deal -- I'm not very active anymore. HereToHelp (talk to me) 03:33, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

hi Here2help, i have just changed your edits to The Opposite of Fate: A Book of Musings in the Reception section within quotation marks as i believe they were originally correct in line with WP:QUOTE. BTW i love your numerous little edits, keep up the great work!

Your edit to Violet (color): Please don't churn the whitespace

[edit]

This is purely my personal opinion, not official WP policy or guideline or even an essay—but speaking strictly personally, I would like to ask you to refrain from edits that do not affect the rendered text, such as this edit that you made to Violet (color).

I'm not reverting that change; the previous text with the doubled space would not be something I'd ever argue for. Nevertheless I'm leaving you this note to ask you to consider: While such edits do not affect the text seen by the reader, they do increase editor workload. They clutter and complicate the editing history of the article and make diffs between versions more time-consuming to go through, especially since such changes can be difficult to see and evaluate in the diffs display. This can sometimes cause a lot of wasted time and effort for later editors trying to figure out what a previous edit has done.

All because of edits that do not improve the article for the reader, not in the slightest detail.

Thank you for considering this suggestion. I realize you are acting in good faith to improve the encyclopedia as you see it, but please consider that such edits can make unnecessary work for those who follow you. Jeh (talk) 07:00, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I'll be more careful. I was just trying to make the spacing in the sentence consistent with the spacing everywhere else in that article. Thanks! Here2help (talk) 07:05, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Colon of comma for quotation

[edit]

Hi, if you are "here to help" then please don't go about making edits like this replacing colons with commas and labeling it as "proper punctuation". The colon was proper here. See, for instance here where they say: "You Can Use a Colon If the Quotation Is an Independent Clause." Cheers - DVdm (talk) 08:44, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Note: see also User talk:Here2help#Commas. - DVdm (talk) 08:46, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I see what you mean, but I felt that the colon was improper because of what preceded it, not by the independent clause that succeeded it. "I stated, 'x,y,z'" has more proper punctuation than "I stated: x,y,z". To keep the colon, I would have had to add, "I stated as follows: x, y, z". The punctuation I chose kept the punctuation proper and made the sentence more concise. Here2help (talk) 09:15, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Do not add the oxford, or serial comma to articles where it is not used. See MOS:OXFORD. Compare WP:CITEVAR. -- Ssilvers (talk) 03:23, 10 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I noticed you do a lot of typographical fixes, which is great. Did you know that you can mark these as minor edits when you save them? It helps people like me with a lot of pages on watchlist. Thanks! ☆ Bri (talk) 22:33, 9 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
