Predatory source

Hi. You removed a reference to Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences 5 (2022) 198 as coming from a predatory source. I think that saying that a source is predatory is delicate stuff... Can you please provide evidence that Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences is a predatory journal? Thanks. HistorySc20 (talk) 06:50, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

@HistorySc20: You can check https://beallslist.net/ for the publisher OPAST. It used to be at http://www.opastonline.com/, but is now at https://opastpublishers.com. You can now also check https://science-education-research.com/category/academic-standards/publisihing-ethics/predatory-journals/. It also advertises several dodgy indexing services and fake impact factors on its website https://opastpublishers.com/journal/journal-of-humanities-social-sciences. Cleaning up spaces in <math> tags

Hi, I had to revert one of your edits [2] to Large deformation diffeomorphic metric mapping as it created a mathematics syntax error.

Inside <math>...</math> tags an escaped space \ creates a specific amount of space and \, makes a smaller amount of space. The upshot of this is changing \ , to \, shortens the space and removes a comma. Worse, changing \ . to \. makes a syntax error and there is no corresponding \. escape sequence.

If you are doing more such edit can check you don't make changes inside maths tags as they have their own syntax rules. --Salix alba (talk): 18:55, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Yeah thanks for catching that one. I normally skip them, but I knew one slipped by from a misclick. I couldn't find where it was though. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 18:57, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Spaced colons

It's never been clear to me as to the best way to represent in text the practice of books, journals, etc. having titles made up of a 'main' and 'subsidiary' title distinguished only by being on separate lines, usually ending with a full stop in older publications but not in modern ones. For something like Linnaea (see here) we could use "Linnaea. Ein Journal für die Botanik in ihrem ganzen Umfange." or just reduce to "Linnaea". Library catalogues often seem to use a spaced colon to indicate this use of a newline in a full title. See this example for a book which I have on my shelf and has on the cover the two-line title laid out as

THE LILY
For Garden, Patio and Display

What does seem to me to be wrong is to introduce an unspaced colon as if it were present in the original title. Peter coxhead (talk) 06:51, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

These are subtitles, and subtitles should be unspaced in English. What others do in their databases is up to them. This is no different than us preferring title case The Lily: For Grade, Pation, and Display rather than the all lowercase The lily : for garden, patio and display. See [3] for a database that uses an unspaced colon. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 07:06, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
So in all cases, including those that use full stops, you would use an unspaced colon? Peter coxhead (talk) 08:13, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
Absent other guidance, usually yes. Sometimes commas. Sometimes hyphens/ndashes. Databases are very weird and have very odd formats. If it's a widespread publication, the best guidance is usually to look how it's cited in reliable sources. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 08:18, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
Well, I regard both the Biodiversity Heritage Library and WorldCat as reliable sources, and both use spaced colons. I think that MOS:COLON needs to cover handling publications with subtitles separated only by newline, since the injunction not to space a colon is in the context of text, not publication titles. In my view any citation which uses the BHL (a widely used reliable secondary source) as the URL should use the title it uses, which in the example in question is "Linnaea : Ein Journal für die Botanik in ihrem ganzen Umfange". Peter coxhead (talk) 08:36, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
They are reliable as far as general information goes. Not with respect to titles, and style issues. Worldcat has absolutely terrible metadata. One of the worst databases out there for it. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 08:39, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
WorldCat picks up information from individual library catalogues. Do you regard the British Library as not a reliable source? See here. What reliable source says to re-style publication titles with spaced subtitles by adding an unspaced colon? I would rather we followed the style used by the great majority of library catalogues that I have looked at. Peter coxhead (talk) 09:03, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
For general information it's reliable. Style is arbitrary (see Unspaced colon, unspaced semicolon, etc...) and on the English Wikipedia, our style is unspaced colons for subtitles. See WP:SUBTITLE: The standard separator for the title and the subtitle ... is a colon followed by a space, as in the first example above. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 09:08, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

Ok, it wouldn't be my choice, because the re-styling hides a distinction between a work without a colon in its title and one with, but it seems that it's the agreed style. Peter coxhead (talk) 17:13, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for helping to copy edit my article. I decided to see if I could get some more input on userboxes for the interview section of my article, so if you are interested in being interviewed, here are the questions:

 1. How did you first get into userboxes?
 2. How long have you been using/creating userboxes?
 3. Why do you like userboxes?
 4. What's your favorite userbox and why?

Time to talk? Join our Anti-Disinformation project

Hi! I'm part of the Wikimedia-wide anti-disinformation crowdsourcing initiative and would love to learn more about your Unreliable/Predatory Source Detector (UPSD) user script, which was recommended as an example of an anti-disinformation tool.

Would you be open to a 30-minute call sometime this week or next? Thanks for considering! ~ FPutz (WMF) (talk) 10:02, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

@FPutz (WMF): Sure, you can send me an email and I'll reply. I'm free right now if you want, or we can have a chat later in the week. Teams or Skype usually is best if you want a video call. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 10:05, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
Great! Just sent you an email FPutz (WMF) (talk) 10:08, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
@FPutz (WMF): Replied. If right now/today doesn't work, I'm free most of the week except on Wednesday and Thursday. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 10:20, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
@FPutz (WMF): Resent the email to the correct address this time. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 10:32, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

JCW-CleanerBot

Hi, I'm just curious about some edits the bot has made to Monkeypox

As an example, it's changed Central African to Central African. Similar with the s in a plural word. Harmless change, but it makes the source code harder to read. It's not a typo so I can't see the justification for changing it.

Cheers, Bob (talk) 10:59, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

That's part of WP:AWB's general fixes. If you have Foorbarwhatever, it will be changed to Foobarwhatever since that's more efficient and gives the same output. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 12:26, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
