Depot disambiguation

Hi. I'm just dropping you a note to explain why I've reverted some of your recent edits to 'depot' wikilinks. In British English, depot does not mean a train station, but rather an area where trams, buses and trains are kept overnight, and where maintenance is performed - like a rail yard (see List of words having different meanings in British and American English#D. A redirect to 'train station' in that context is incorrect. The 'depot' disambiguation page does contain a definition of the British English use of the word, and as many readers might not be familiar with the use of the word in that context, I think it is worth keeping wikilinks to the disambiguation page. Sometime in the future, somebody may create an article about tram depots etc. I've picked up a few of your edits, but there may be others that you might be able to go back and change. - cheers. -- Adz|talk 02:19, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Gotta say that I agree, depot is one of those words, that on both sides of the pond (or Australia) carries many, many meanings. I figured that Train station was the best among those avaliable, but I too am beginning to reconsider. Train station, in the case that I was linking to meant just that, a small station among many others. Of course, a better definition would be a hub, or storage location in which many trains are serviced/stored. I may have to start a few new entries to finish this project. The difference is though that trains/trams/buses usually don't collect passengers at depots, so it isn't really a station at all. If you do and up creating an entry for transport depots, you may want to see if User:Paddington62 would like to give you a hand (who wrote much of the Paddington tram depot fire article and knows a lot about trams), as well as some of the editors who started some of the depot articles at Category:Melbourne trams. cheers -- Adz|talk 02:48, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

These last three words are a link, not to articles about Shakespeare (my country's greatest playwright) and Homer (some cartoon character I think), but rather to an article on fraud. Surely Shakespeare wasn't a fraud? And does Homer even have the wit to deceive? I think we should be told...

ahh, I understand how you could be confused: the Homer I refer to is not a cartoon, though he may as well be, he is the author of The Iliad and The Odyssey, and while some thought him a storytelling genius, I thought him kind of a bore. He talked too much and chewed with his mouth open. As for Billy Shakes, yes, I'm sorry to break your heart, but he was a fraud. Othello was actually based on a story I told him once about how I made a buddy of mine break up with his girlfriend by saying that she was cheating on him. The rest of his stories were actually written by his cousin Tito Shakespeare; Billy blackmailed him by saying that if he didn't get Tito's stories Billy was going to tell Tito's mum (Billy's auntie) that Tito dropped out of University. Thomas Dixon

Hey there, I've been considering lately that Thomas Dixon should probably link directly to Thomas Dixon, Jr., as that article probably has dominant usage (see here); not going to do anything without some kind of consensus between us, I am a major contributor to that article, and you are the major contributor to Thomas Hill Dixon, which is probably the second most used TD. I concede that your Dixon is bigger than my Dixon. ;-) Whether yours is sufficiently bigger to merit a redirect and a tagline, rather than a disambiguation page, is perhaps debatable, but if you think it best then you go for it; I certainly won't obstruct you over such a minor issue so politely raised. Julie

Sorry if my explanations were too brief.

Most of my changes are intended to make it a better disambiguation page. Detailed information about the name itself should be on Julie (surname) or other such page. My changes were intended to help people the articles with the information they need most efficiently.

The multiple links on the list, I think ARE well noted in the edit summary: WP:MOSDAB mentions limiting bluelinks. The red links are expected to be filled with an article sometime. The blue provides useful information for people that might be looking for that particular "Julie" before they are written. If any of the links get deleted, I would suggest the red links go. Thanks for the Julie (surname) change. The two edits are actually consistent with what I said (or was trying to say). I added useful bluelinks on lines that had only a redlinked "target" article and then, only if it was specific enough. If someone is looking for Julie the book, but it doesn't exist, the article about the author might have useful information. In the earlier edit, all the target articles were blue, so the extra bluelinks just confused the dab page. (John User:Jwy talk) 22:18, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Ah-ha, Thanks for pointing that out. A discussion about the change kept referring to the "surname" Julie; when I made the page that particular discussion must have stuck out for some reason.
