Welcome!

[edit]

Hi Guy Haddad 1! I noticed your contributions and wanted to welcome you to the Wikipedia community. I hope you like it here and decide to stay.

I've noticed that you've expressed an interest in the Arab–Israeli conflict. Unfortunately, due to a history of conflict and disruptive editing it has been designated a contentious topic and is subject to some strict rules.

The rule that affects you most as a new or IP editor is the prohibition on making any edit related to the Arab–Israel conflict unless you are logged into an account and that account is at least 30 days old and has made at least 500 edits.

This prohibition is broadly construed, so it includes edits such as adding the reaction of a public figure concerning the conflict to their article or noting the position of a company or organization as it relates to the conflict.

The exception to this rule is that you may request a specific change to an article on the talk page of that article or at this page. Please ensure that your requested edit complies with our neutral point of view and reliable sourcing policies, and if the edit is about a living person our policies on biographies of living people as well.

Any edits you make contrary to these rules are likely to be reverted, and repeated violations can lead to you being blocked from editing.

Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Additionally, you must be logged-in, have 500 edits and an account age of 30 days, and are not allowed to make more than 1 revert within 24 hours on a page within this topic.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

A tag has been placed on Draft:Second battle of Jabalia (May) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

per WP:ARBECR, non extended-confirmed editors are only meant to use the "Talk:" namespace only to make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided they are not disruptive.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, pages that meet certain criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. @ToBeFree
Hi, my draft was deleted because I am not an extended-confirmed editor. However, I believe the draft should not have been deleted and should be restored for the following reasons:
1. From WP:ARBECR, section A.2: "Deletion of new articles created by non-extended-confirmed editors is permitted but not required" (emphasis mine). Therefore, while it is possible to delete the draft I created, it is not mandatory.
2. I have no intention of publishing this draft before consulting with an extended-confirmed editor.
3. I want to create an article about the second (May) battle in Jabalia, and since I am not an extended-confirmed editor, I reached out to one for assistance. The user provided guidance on how to create the page (which includes approval from extended-confirmed editors) and advised me to create a draft. You can find the discussion with that user here.
For these reasons, I request that the draft page be restored. I will continue working on it but will not publish it without the help, consensus, and approval of extended-confirmed editors.
Thanks Guy Haddad 1 (talk) 14:05, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Guy Haddad 1,
regarding 1), when I see a request for the deletion of such an article, I perform the deletion as long as it's permitted. It would be wrong of me to decline it as other administrators could disagree and declining such a request means saying "noone will do this". I personally believe that WP:ARBECR is helpful and necessary to reduce disruption in this highly heated topic area, and that its restrictions should be applied without judging the value of a page, as that is the only objective way to deal with it to me. I think this is similar to WP:Banning policy § Bans apply to all editing, good or bad, as your restriction is more-or-less a special form of ban.
2), 3) In the WP:A/I/PIA area only, not in other areas affected by the extended-confirmed restriction, you can use User:Guy Haddad 1/sandbox (or similar names) to create a personal sandbox in userspace where you can actually draft the article before asking someone else to move it on your behalf. This is because WP:A/I/PIA explicitly excludes userspace and the sandbox would be in your userspace. I tend to forget this and think it's a bit absurd, but it's there despite me recently explaining the problem, and I remembered it while typing a notification for Yovt. I also originally wasn't aware that someone had provided incorrect advice that led to the creation of the draft, sorry.
I generally do not restore such pages unless the creator has become extended-confirmed in the meantime, nor do I provide the content of deleted pages on request, but CAT:RESTORE exists and/or you may have a local copy already, and you can use the userspace sandbox to do mostly what you want to do.
Best regards,
~ ToBeFree (talk) 23:34, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I mean, the situation is even more absurd than that. The ex-sandbox would qualify for deletion as soon as someone else moves it on your behalf to anywhere else than your userspace, unless they substantively edit it, as you would still be the creator of the page and the exception would suddenly not apply anymore. Perhaps you can find something at the Task Center or the community portal enjoyable enough to spend your Wikipedia time on for now, until you meet the requirements and all these considerations become unnecessary. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 23:36, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thank you for the clarification. Guy Haddad 1 (talk) 06:25, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
