Haha, who am I kidding?

What I did here (quitting Wikipedia) was, to quote one editor, "a bloody dumbass thing to do". I even considered using my right to vanish. Just proves that teenagers are far more reckless. (Good thing I'm not an administrator.) One "adult" principle of life, or so the movies say, is that you can't run from the past. Hopefully, when I figure that (and other things) out, I'll be mature enough to try Wikipedia again.

A reason to stay

Hi Guoguo - I've never interacted with you, and unfortunately I opposed your RfA. That said, I'm asking you to stay. I think Wikipedia has a lot more to offer than being an admin - I'm not an admin, and find myself busier here than I'd like. I think you should use this place to hone your writing skills, which actually are okay as long as you're careful about the close paraphrasing. It's a lot more exciting to write for the unknown audience who reads wiki articles than to write a paper to hand in to a teacher, imo. Anyway, I'm sure this is a disappointment, but don't dwell on it, and stick around and become a content editor. After all, wikipedia is all about building content, and it's editors like yourself who, I think, have the most to gain here. For whatever it's worth. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 20:58, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Thoughts

I know you don't want attention now for the sake of attention, but have some unsolicited, hopefully not too patronizing advice. Some of this I would have written near the end of your RfA, but it was closed before I got to it.

Take a few days off. Relax. Focus on some other activities for awhile. Think about your priorities. Think about some of the lessons you've learned.

After a few days away, come back if—and only if—you think you'll enjoy participating again. There's no time limit. You don't have to announce that you're retired or semi-retired or unretired or ambivalent or whatever. Just edit, if you want to, or don't edit, if you don't want to, and do the best job you can at whatever you choose to do, whether it's Wikipedia or something totally different.

If you do stick around, you might want to read Wikipedia:Guidance for younger editors if you haven't already and if it's relevant to your situation and if you think it might be helpful to you. You can try the current version, or the tl;dr version that I wrote originally (linked at the top of the page). If you have any suggestions for making the essay more useful, put them on the talkpage.

Both echoing NYB's comments above and noting that he (as ever from one of our most "senior" wikipedians) gives some fine advice. I was delighted to support your RFA and I was dismayed by the vitriolic assult from Sandy Georgia (although she had some good points her intemperate wrath was simply uncalled for). Your efforts here are very much appreciated. SG bought up some issues that you can learn from, but please continue to enjoy the site and carry on adding value to the readership. Best wishes. Just a TLDR comment :)

Sandy is a highly experienced user for whom I have a huge respect, and she has an uncanny knack of finding stuff that many of us don't, but she's occasionally outspoken and sometimes doesn't spare the rod (she nearly wrecked my own RfA!). Also on my RfA several others branded me as a child hater - they couldn't have been more wrong, they just didn't didn't dig deep enough or read my user page. These are the problems with many !voters at RfA. I did not !vote on your RfA because I had already made a clean-up intervention that (to me at least) means I must recuse myself. I nevertheless do believe that Sandy raised some important points that just may have something to do with maturity. However, I have come across your work many times and have always been impressed by the way in which you express yourself in most situations and the way you formulated your answers to the questions on your RfA.

That said, I think that from what you have learned through this RfA, you have a lot to offer Wikipedia. In particular, and most especially, in helping other young users to overcome their childishness. I have come across many instances where younger users confuse Wikipedia with a run-of-the-mill Internet forum or blog, and I also understand their misplaced enthusiasm to organise competitions fornew page tagging and Wikilinking, overuse of the barnstar system, overly promotional user pages, and general employ of teenage language when addressing mature creators of articles that unfortunately must be deleted because the rules were simply not understood.

I know it's a terribly embarrassing thing to have those things revealed that Sandy pointed out, but I'm sure that you genuinely did not realise just how seriously using words from another website is taken - I once had a GA nom ditched mainly because of three or four words from another site. Although I was the main contributor to that article, I hadn't added the item myself, but when I checked the refs I didn't recognise a serious COPYVIO. Nowadays, and especially as an admin, I have to be extra special careful not only of what I include, but to dig deep into what others maintain are WP:RS.

Please reconsider your retirement - in spite of the reasons that led you to withdraw from your RfA, you have done a lot of good work here, and are generally very familiar with the rules and how to create and edit articles. Many users have had to take and overcome far worse embarrassment and have gone on to gain a great respect from the community, and even made admin on their 5th run with flying colours. BTW, FWIW, I was the one who rewrote Brad's excellent article to make it a tad more readable for younger editors - in fact my version was actually several bytes longer than what he thought was TLDR!
