Tchaikovsky Operas

[edit]

So far, so good on what you've written so far in Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Your keeping things short gives info without impeding the flow of the article in any serious degree, so it's probably best to keep things that way. Looking forward to seeing more. BTW, know what you mean about laboring over seemingly small amounts of complex or hard-to-phrase material. Was going through that this morning on "Relationship With The Five" as you did the same further down the article. That section is hopefully a little clearer and more complete now. Jonyungk (talk) 21:56, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry about time. Just do the best job you can. I'm juggling a number of commitments and time restraints myself, so you're not alone.
As for Brian and the separate Works and Life thing, I can see both your points. On one hand, it can be all too easy to let an article get bogged down by going down what can seem several avenues at once. That may be his concern here and, to a certain point, I am wary of, as well. However--and this is a big "however"--you also have the question of how the composer's life affects his music and vice verse. With Tchaikovsky, the two are enmeshed much closer than usual, so you have to deal to some point with one when talking about the other. The bottom line: How far can you go down that road without derailing things and having to start again from scratch? It's basically one long, extended balancing act. I'm having to do some careful weighing and measuring myself with the musical politics Tchaik had to navigate around. It's all relevant, the full extent of it is not spelled out terribly often in Western sources and here I am having to show its importance in such a damn short amount of time. But it also can't be avoided--it has to be done so that people will have a clue what all the fuss between, say, Tchaik and Rimsky-Korsakov is all about. I know your job, at least in the Life section, is not an easy one. I realize that. But the rest of us working on the article really appreciate what you're doing. Keep it up. Jonyungk (talk) 23:06, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please see my comments on Talk:Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky about deleting "Mature Composer" as separate section and reusing material elsewhere in article. Saved your work on the operas so please don't fret about it going to waste. It hasn't. Jonyungk (talk) 15:55, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Glad you're being easygoing about all the shifting etc. Was concerned you, Smerus or someone else was going to say, "You cut the opera stuff and we just put it in," or something along those lines. Nice how things fell into place. Go ahead with Onegin if you want. Now that the "Growing fame; budding opera composer" section feels more solid, I may take a day or two off. We'll see. Jonyungk (talk) 15:56, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Have you thought about using Henry Zajaczkowski's book on the Tchaikovsky operas in your research? Just stumbled across it in looking up Modest Tchaikovsky's bio of hhis composer-brother and looks interesting. Here's the link to it in Google Books: http://books.google.com/books?id=wa6r_GcqBM8C&pg=PA16&dq=Modest+Tchaikovsky&hl=en&sa=X&ei=NRA6T5GfJ6vXiALd6r2TDA&ved=0CGoQ6AEwCQ#v=onepage&q=Modest%20Tchaikovsky&f=false Jonyungk (talk) 07:47, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not to hustle you along but how soon could you write a couple of paragraphs on the Tchaik operas, with the info attributed, and drop them on my talk page? The material can be tweaked and amended later, but I'm putting together a new Music section for the article and it is coming together quicker than expected. Please let me know. Thanks. Jonyungk (talk) 19:41, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Virginia operas

[edit]

Yes, I am well aware of the contents of WP:NAMB, but someone had just set Virginia (opera) to redirect to that article. But I'm just going to change it to redirect to Virginia (disambiguation) anyway. Theoldsparkle (talk) 16:27, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Online Ambassador, Spring 2012

[edit]

Hi, GuillaumeTell! As you may know, the Wikipedia Education Program has instilled a new set of standards that courses must meet to officially join the program for the semester. As you can see, one of the requirements is that at least one ambassador or professor is a Wikipedian, as this should give students more access to helpful information about contributing to Wikipedia and creating good content. You are listed on the Online Ambassador page; are you still interested in remaining active this semester? Some of these classes will have to remove themselves from the program should they fail to meet these standards, but we would like to ensure that new students are receiving proper support during the editing process. Please let me know if you are still interested in mentoring these students this semester and/or visit the Online Ambassador talk page to select a course that still needs an Online Ambassador. Thank you! JMathewson (WMF) (talk) 00:23, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have at last addressed the points you raised in the autumn. If you have time, I'd be grateful if you'd give my replies and the associated redrafts the once-over. And then, I hope, it's ho for FAC! Tim riley (talk) 15:22, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Rimsky-Korsakov or Rubinstein operas, anyone?

[edit]

Hi there. Your work on Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's operas made me curious on how knowledgeable you are about operas by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov or Anton Rubinstein. R-K is an FA I shepherded through FAC a year or two ago but I've never been happy about its music section, especially regarding the operas, on which R-K spent a considerable amount of his life and artistic effort. Since I'm slowly going through articles related to Tchaikovsky, I'll eventually have to address Rubinstein since he was Tchaik's composition teacher at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. Is there any way you could eventually help me out with either of these projects? I'm talking long-term, timing-wise, so please don't think I'm asking about tackling everything right away. Besides, we all have lives to lead outside of Wikipedia, as well. Thanks. Jonyungk (talk) 16:13, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply and offer for help. I'll definitely keep you posted on developments. I saw what happened with the rollback after the fact. (I've been on Wikipedia less the last couple of days—getting over a case of sinusitis.) That kind of thing unfortunately happens a lot on Tchaikovsky, for all sorts of reasons, but it still boils down to vandalism. Thanks for keeping an eye out. Jonyungk (talk) 18:21, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

ROH Directors of Opera

[edit]

I think I owe you lunch! That's surely just what was lacking. Thank you very much. Tim riley (talk) 22:23, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Brain now caught up with eyes - will you add this to the article or shall I? Tim riley (talk) 22:27, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You really must stop referring to "Peter 'little black dress' Katona", or we'll all end up in court as defendants in a libel case. But apropos of that production, I saw Petra Lang in it, and it baffles me that she hasn't got a Wikipedia article. One for my to-do list, unless (shameless hint) you were inclined... Thanks for your post - have only just heard it myself as I was away for the weekend, hope you enjoyed it! New opera

[edit]

While making Grant Doyle I noticed that James MacMillan's latest chamber opera Clemency (opera) is a red link. I could probably cobble together stuff from variousonline sources. Do you have anything IRL that could contribute? almost-instinct 16:54, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have to say that I prefer his choral stuff, but he seems important enough with the UK to warrant getting a basic article up for his operas. I think this one is going to the Edinburgh Festival this year. Another surprising redlink is Stanford Olsen. If I made that would you have anything to add? almost-instinct 19:08, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I only know of Olsen because I have this DVD of Semiramide. A classier noise than Florez in my opinion. His Met career seems to have come to an abrupt stop in 1997, as far as I could tell from their archives. I think I might do some digging around to fathom the shape of his career before doing his page almost-instinct 23:43, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Burges

[edit]

Please make the necessary changes.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:13, 10 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think I've changed the text so as not to contradict the point that the Hall was, arguably, not a major decorative work though the Chapel was, and is. But I am now pondering whether there should be a more substantial mention of Burges's work at Worcester College. Would be grateful for your views. KJP1 (talk) 22:37, 10 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Beautiful. I think, "Now I must amend the Knightshayes section", go there, and you've done it already. The reference works fine. Many thanks. KJP1 (talk) 22:39, 10 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oxford Georgian Society

[edit]

Hello Mr Tell. A new editor, AktadG, has prepared a page for the Oxford Georgian Socieyt in his sandbox. A previous attempt I believe got deleted. It looks very fine, especially when I think back to my first attempts.... I'm about to give it a quick copy-edit - since this is more your field than mine could I ask you to run you eye over things. Clearly AktadG is for the time being primarily concerned with making notability clear. I'm also going to ask Voceditenore to cast her eye over it, since she's so strong on notability. Thank you! almost-instinct 17:42, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

GuillaumeTell, My students are back from spring break and will be starting their sandbox page and drafting this week. I'm giving them the go ahead if they've done their research and listed their citatations on their user page. I'm instructing them to go to our course page, click on the red link for their person, and choose "special:mypage..." to create their page. You'll be listed as one of their contacts if they should need help. In a week or so, the students will be getting to the point where they should be able to submit. Could you review some of these to tell students if they are ready to submit to AFC? Thank you, Crtew (talk) 17:40, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dan Leno

[edit]

The article on Dan Leno has been nominated for Featured Article consideration here. Leno was a leading star of music hall, Victorian burlesque and pantomime. We would welcome your comments, if you have time. Happy editing! -- Ssilvers (talk) 00:33, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Petar Stojanović

[edit]

Hello, I saw that you have created an article about a Serbian violinst. I was wondering if you and I could make the Petar Stojanović become a disambiguation page and you would move the article about the musician to something like Petar Stojanović (Serbian violinist) or Petar Stojanović (Serbian musician) etc. or simply without Serbian at the begining? Because there is another Petar Stojanović that plays football for NK Maribor and couple of days ago made a debut for the club, thus becoming the youngest footballer to appear for Maribor in Slovenian top division. He is also a member of the national youth selection so he is likely to gain prominence in the future. I would create an article about him using Petar Stojanović (footballer) or something like that:). Lep pozdrav, Ratipok (talk) 13:00, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for updating the links in some articles. Unfortunately, the G&S archive underwent a rather extensive revision, during which many items were moved to slightly different urls, and many of the links need updating. Gah! I have been working on it little by little, but it will take a long time to find and update all of them. -- Ssilvers (talk) 16:16, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, Billington did not like it much. My own feeling is that Finborough is not doing the GD any favours by presenting this scaled-down version. I wish Billington could see the full-scale Buxton production in August, but of course he won't. -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:50, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can you help me with this

[edit]

The articles are going through review and one student recieved a WP:Victim and WP:1E. My student was basing her notability on WP:SIGCOV. I explained the reasoning here on the reviewer's talk page. But I'm really interested in how to shift the weight in these decisions to WP:SIGCOV. Your thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks, Crtew (talk) 21:14, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I've looked briefly at the pages in question, and have boggled. I'll look tomorrow when I am sober, and will report back. Tim riley (talk) 21:59, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sobriety has set in, but I still boggle. It looks right to me, but I'm fathoms out of my depth. I'll see if I can rouse someone more expert to action. Tim riley (talk) 08:54, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I hasten to rebut the slur that I dislike Lear. I am a great fan. If absolutely pushed I should have to choose Carroll over Lear (unlike G K Chesterton in his Defence of Nonsense) but I am a personal friend of the Blue Baboon who plays the flute. What I meant was that the techicalities of nominating Lear for 'anniversaries' was beyond my ken. Tim riley (talk) 10:23, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you find yourself with nothing better to do, I have Gabriel Fauré up for FAC, and Alec Douglas-Home up for peer review. Though I'm a woolly liberal in good standing (neither Ken nor Boris got my vote this morning) I nonetheless enjoyed writing about Home, who was a good guy and an effective politician in a quiet way. Do look in if you have time and disposition. Tim riley (talk) 12:33, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I hesitate to importune you further after your heroic efforts at peer review, but I have Sir Alec up for FAC now, (Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Alec Douglas-Home/archive1) should you care to look in and comment. Tim riley (talk) 14:49, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Country Houses

[edit]

I was wondering if you or you know anybody who'd be interested in such a project. One of my chief loves is British country houses and I don't at present see a project set up to help coordinate it and to collaborate over. If interested let me know and I'll consider making a proposal.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:54, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Was it you who had that big list of missing country houses or something? If so, a big yes, I want to make the list as complete as possible and have something to work towards. Ideally all that are mentioned in the sum of Pevsner's books and more. Yes, the project like most would be a loose association but the thought of compiling GAs under one project is more encouraging I think and gives them more focus.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:28, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm extremely keen to see that database. Is it possible you could greatly expand the list of country houses? Even if you could download a list or email it to me so I could do something with it..♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:46, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, that sounds OK. But its the Pevsner books which appear to have the most in. What I really need is to get hold of the indexes to as many of his books by county as possible.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:13, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Its just I was doing some work recently and impressed how each village seemed to have about 2 or 3 country houses! Well, if the sources exist demolished houses are valuable too, the lists are supposed to include both, although articles on different buildings of the same place would of course be redundant. I had expected a full glossary of building entries at the back of the books. I'm thinking what the best way to do this would be. Is it possible maybe you could expand the list by county by scanning through each book and entering them into the lists whenever you can? Obviously it would be a gradual thing, but would be very valuable to even just access the names because potentially they can each be researched and missing articles started.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:43, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you and Michael are planning to create a table for Donizetti's operas, which I think is a great idea. I would be willing to help out. (It is a rather long list.) PS - Why don't we just start it in article space, so that anyone who has access to Grove can pitch in? --Robert.Allen (talk) 02:16, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know about you, but I found User:AlanPalgut's removal of the no-break spaces was not very helpful. It's my impression that Michael's adding them made it much easier to find the appropriate blank cells in the table. I left a question about it on User talk:AlanPalgut. --Robert.Allen (talk) 22:57, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm unsure whether we need a notes column. What did you want to put in it? And, oh, you are ambitious: Donizetti is enough to think about right now! --Robert.Allen (talk) 08:03, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GuillaumeTell, I left a note at User talk:Michael Bednarek which also concerns you. (Maybe we should discuss things further at Talk:List of operas by Donizetti, in case other editors would like to participate?) Best, --Robert.Allen (talk) 11:44, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Even if they don't participate, once an article is in mainspace, these kinds of issues should always be discussed on the article's talk page so that a transparent record of them is easily available. Discussions on User talk pages get archived and are scattered all over the place. It also helps when making some edits to be able to say "See talk page" in the edit summary. Since there seems to be one good-faith but entirely uncommunicative editor making potentially unhelpful edits to the list, e.g. [1], [2], etc. it's a good idea to highlight your reasons for reversion on the actual talk page, particularly if they persist. Hi GuillaumeTell, I wonder of you could help me. I'm making a website devoted to the opera, the peculiarity of which is line-by-line librettos. Recently I updated two Wiki pages on operas by Adolphe Adam: Le chalet and Si j'étais roi, I added links to libretto on my website. Libretto is really hard to find. Indeed. My links were deleted by User:Alexf [3] because of spammy. What do you think about it?

I hope you're still interested in supporting these students for the coming term. Thanks! JMathewson (WMF) (talk) 20:34, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ave atque vale

[edit]

I am sending this note to Wikipedians with whom I have most closely collaborated over the last six years or so. After pondering hard during a month's wiki-break in July I have sadly decided to withdraw fully from contributing. I have been worn down by continual carping, sniping and belittling from a wearisome few (you know the sort of people I refer to); the joy has gone out of taking part in this wonderful enterprise. I should be more resilient, but alas it's finally got to me.

Working with you has been a pleasure and a privilege: I count myself fortunate to have had such colleagues. My warmest wishes go with you for the future. I shall be happy to do any research, copy-editing, fact-checking etc you may ever feel inclined to ask me to do – but safely offline.

With my very best wishes,
Tim. (Tim riley (talk) 16:36, 10 August 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Philip Tilden

[edit]

Very good to hear from you and thanks for adding PT to the British Architects list. He is quite interesting and in the 20s had an amazing client list! Now almost unknown. The Bettley RIBA monograph is the only work I know on him and Google gets you very little. Nevertheless, there's quite a lot more on him that can go in and I'll work the article up over time. A very great shame about Tim. He was so helpful on WB and an absolute pleasure to work with. He'll be very much missed. All the best. KJP1 (talk) 05:37, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ambassador Program

[edit]

GuillaumeTell, I was wondering if you would be willing to sign up for another semester with my course? Students are again adopting journalists or events in which journalists have been killed. This time I am focusing on Mexico, Somalia, Syria and Lebanon, but I do have several students working on Pakistan, Bangledesh, Cambodia and others. You can take a look at the spread of the assignments. In addition, I have some content experts who know the language and culture for several of these countries. Greater care has been taken this semester in the selection of assignments by making sure there is documentation before students begin. Thank you for your contributions so far to the project! Best, Crtew (talk) 17:29, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I currently have the above listed at peer review as a result of a lot of work and research which I have conducted over the last couple of months. I would be extremely greatful for any comments you may have and would welcome any feedback or suggestions. Many thanks in advance. -- CassiantoTalk 02:12, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Old church

[edit]

GT (or is it G&T?)--

I would be happy to assist with an article on the Tyneside church. Let me (and Rotherstone) know where the draft is and I will assist when able.

Hi GuillaumeTell. See [4]. I was thinking of doing October's OoM on radio operas, perhaps creating and/or expanding articles on some of the operas and composers on your great new list, but I need some idea on priorities. Any thoughts? Best, Voceditenore (talk) 08:23, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Will be Television opera be turning blue any time soon? :-) almost-instinct 17:11, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fairly pointless question: some Television Operas have made it into the stage repertoire; have any of the Radio Operas on your list? or have they survived, if at all, merely on the concert stage? almost-instinct 11:22, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Interestingly, while adding a few dates to the Composed column just now, I've had a look at about 3/4 of the entries in Grove Opera and quite a few of the radio operas have subsequently been staged: both Bäck operas, Dallapiccola's, Egk's, one of Giannini's, two of Henze's, Lorentzen's, Menotti's, one of Mihalovic's, Petrovic's, both of Pizzetti's. Probably worth footnotes somewhere in the table and a mention in the radio opera article. No info on concert performances. --GuillaumeTell 18:02, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly on Radio Opera page that will make for very interesting information :) almost-instinct 21:47, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Crtew research assignment help?

[edit]

Good evening! I am very confused by all of the codes and cannot understand why it is so difficult to input information when it seems like there's got to be an easier way! :( Dr. Tew recommended you as a source of help, so I am reaching out to you. Can you offer any assistance? I would greatly appreciate it!!!!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ldfeller (talkcontribs) 00:11, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please help!

[edit]

Hi Guillaume Tell! I am working on a Wiki article for a comm class at USI and I had two quick questions for you. I am confused on how to use inline citation on my article. How would I go about creating an inline citation for a piece of information? And my second question is how do I add another reference to my reference list? Thank you!Enweaver (talk) 22:12, 17 October 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.96.148.210 (talk) 21:57, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Help requested for Dr. Tew's USI class

[edit]

I'm a student in Dr. Tew's class at USI. Could you please take a look at my article and tell me how to get the Context section, which is presently at the bottom of the Aftermath section, into its own section between the aftermath and impact sections? There are still a few things I need to do on my article but could you please give me some general feedback too? Thanks in advance for your help. I appreciate it. Joecool2014 (talk) 14:30, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for help on article

[edit]

Thank you for your words of encouragement, Mr. Tell. After I implemented the changes you suggested and fixed a couple ref tags in the aftermath section, the context section fixed itself. I still have some work to do on the article before submitting it, and I think it will be interesting to see new information added later on perhaps by those who knew de Dios better. Indeed my alias derives from Snoopy and 2014 is my year (hopefully) of graduation. Thanks again for your help. Best regards, Joecool2014 (talk) 03:42, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pierre Monteux

[edit]

I thought you may be interested to know that after some email discussions with Tim riley, and some final polishing, I have co-nominated Pierre Monteux at FAC. This was Tim's current project when he decided to leave Wikipedia, but I think it is worthy of consideration for promotion. Any comments will be welcome. USI student needing help

[edit]

I am working with Crtew from USI as a student and need help with locating and pinpointing Balochistan on the map that is on the page I am constructing. I have no idea how to do this. Can you please help? Thank you, Khbarton (talk) 13:05, 4 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
