Stubstuff

[edit]

Poland-geo-stub & Spain-geo-stub

[edit]

Both have reached 5 pages and with 16 voivoidships and 19 autonomous communites and cites respectiviely for those countries first-order subdivision, it looks like we have two more countries to monitor for potential splits. Caerwine 00:31, 7 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually the autonomous communities of Spain by and large correspond to the traditional regions. It's the older system of provinces that the autonomous communities were superimposed on that didn't have the correspondence. The provinces are all roughly the same size while the autonoumous communities vary widely in size. Caerwine 03:39, 7 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Inverness-shire Geography Stubs

[edit]

There is a problem with Category:Inverness-shire_geography_stubs. The wording at Scotland Geo Stubs says places are categorised by lieutenancy area, however Inverness-shire is not a LA. Inverness is, but it does not cover Skye. Inverness-shire is a traditional county, but would also include Harris and Uist etc. Grinner 09:44, 7 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I realise this - my fault. See comments on WP:SFD. Grutness...wha? 09:49, 7 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers, sorry but I couldn't figure out which page to have the discussion on, so I went direct to you. Grinner

Re: Hawaiii-geo-stub

[edit]

I noticed that as I was watching the stub proposal page -- thanks for making those last three to push it over the top! :) --MattWright (talk) 09:01, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ireland-geo-stub

[edit]

The removal of that proposal was rather premature, wasn't it? Unless you have veto power. Which I don't think you do. Morwen - Talk 10:46, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Medical journal stub

[edit]

Hello, I left a message on the proposed stub page. I support a new medical mag stub. I am doing some clean-up on medical and biology articles. And will be making stubs, of course. Dividing by topic is good enough for me. Double-checking peer review status is too time consuming for a stub. Instead of journal or mag, how about periodical? The name doesn't matter to me, just the new stub.--FloNight 20:02, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

ag-stub

[edit]

As I've already pointed out in the discussion, the use of "ag" to mean "agriculture" seems to be primarily if not exclusively a North American thing, but I can assure you it is fairly common here in South Carolina, probably more so than "agri". If there were something else that a lower case "ag" could reasonably be expected to be confused with, I could see the point, but so far all that have been presented are hypotheticals of dubious occurance. Caerwine 19:51, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

*bio-stub vs. *-bio-stub

[edit]

If you take a look at the main list, you will see that my statement of "but with the exception of sports bios, we uniformly use a doubly hyphenated "-bio-" in stubs of this type" is true, at least except for some redirects, but I consider that secondary. I did double check that statement before making my claim, just in case there was an exception I was unaware of. Caerwine 02:27, 18 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough, but now that we have the example of Finland-musician-stub being sanctified by having survived an SfD, I expect that we'll be seeing quite a few of more country-musician-stub's being proposed. Indeed, I'll probably be proposing US-musican-stub and UK-musician-stub, not to ease the burden on musician s-stub which looks like it is ameniable to be reduced down to smaller groupings, but as ways to help subdivide the very large US-bio-stub ad UK-bio-stub groupings. RFAs

[edit]

My RFA (Alkivar)

[edit]

Thank you very much for supporting my rather contentious request for adminship, but now that I've been promoted, I'd like to do a little dance here *DANCES*. If you have any specific issues/problems with me, please feel free to state them on my talk page so that I can work to prevent them in the future, and thanks once again!  ALKIVAR 07:50, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vote early, vote often?

[edit]

Belated thanks for voting on my RFA (have hardly had a chance to edit since being away last weekend). I flattered myself to think you might be one of the half-dozen people to vote "yah" on this, but I was quite tickled by your offer to raise both hands at once. Cheers. Alai 04:39, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

An answer... (Lord Voldemort)

[edit]

Thank you very much for thinking I am worthy to be an Admin. However, at this time I do not feel I am quite up to the task. As you've probably noted, I had an RfA fail to reach consensus only just over a month ago. I think it would be doing an injustice to Wikipedia for me to try again so soon. Perhaps in another few weeks. I know WP can always use more good Admins, and I feel I could be one, but maybe not at this point in time. Perhaps sometime in December I will try again. I appreciate your thinking of me though. See you around, my friend. --LV (Dark Mark) 14:26, 18 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, since you asked, I'll keep you updated. Thanks. --LV (Dark Mark) 15:24, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My RfA (Sherool)

[edit]

Thanks for your support. I've now been made an administrator. I'll do my best not to let you down :) --Sherool (talk) 02:30, 19 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers (Hiding)

[edit]

Not only thank you for the support, but also the very kind words. You're one of the very first Wikipedians I had contact with, so it meant a lot to me. Ta. Hiding talk 09:23, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your support (AnnH - Musical Linguist)

[edit]

Hi, Grutness. I just want to thank you for your support for my RfA, and for your kind words. If you ever have a problem with any action of mine as an admin, please feel free to let me know. AnnH (talk) 19:15, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sean Black RfA

[edit]

Thank you very much for your support of my RfA. Thanks, in part, to you, I am now an Administrator, and I pledge to use my newfound powers for good rather than evil. Thanks again!--Sean|Black 08:15, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Aussies at RfA

[edit]

Hi Grutness. Saw your comment on Drew's RfA about the Aussies taking over, which made me laugh :). (The Sekret Aussie Cabal, on the other hand, is plotting your demise :P) There does seem to be a lot of us going through lately, and I have three more in mind to nominate. Any Kiwi's deserving adminship? Most of those I know already are admins. --cj | talk 02:57, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Good choice. Alan's been around forever! --cj | talk 06:23, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Might as well put another Aussie through before a flood of Kiwi's, then. I've nominated Thebainer for adminship. :)--cj | talk 02:57, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Halibutt's RfA

[edit]
Thanks. WikiThanks.
Thanks. WikiThanks.
I would like to express my thanks to all the people who took part in my (failed) RfA voting. I was both surprised and delighted about the amount of support votes and all the kind words! I was also surprised by the amount of people who stated clearly that they do care, be it by voting in for or against my candidacy. That's what Wiki community is about and I'm really pleased to see that it works.
As my RfA voting failed with 71% support, I don't plan to reapply for adminship any more. However, I hope I might still be of some help to the community. Cheers! Halibutt 05:10, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A question (Alan Liefting)

Kakapo

[edit]

I'm going to spruce up the Kakapo article so that it finally makes an appearance on the main page. I know you've made alot of NZ maps, could you make a simple one showing the location of Chalky and Codfish Islands? It may be better as two maps given they are at opposite ends of the country. Thanks. --nixie 00:38, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know where I got the idea that one of the islands was near Auckland, the DOC page says they are now only on two offshore islands: Te Kakahu o Tamatea (Chalky Island) in south-west Fiordland and Whenua Hou (Codfish Island) near Stewart Island. I'm planning to reorgaise most of the latter part of the article, there is a lot of repetition which (I think) reduces the clarity of the text.--nixie 00:55, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The map looks great, thanks again. --nixie 03:10, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Another request, do you think you could make a copy of this?--nixie 03:18, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Great, thanks. I will let you know when I get done with the reorganisation. Is there a policy amongst New Zealand editors on the use of dual place names?--nixie 10:21, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
In the Kakapo article someone has diligently added the Maori name like this Hauturu/Little Barrier Island, to all the instances where they are mentioned- I was wondering if thei is how its done in the cases where there are two names.--nixie 10:39, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Rod Donald

[edit]

I see Alan Liefting has updated the Rod Donald article to note his death from a cerebral haemorrhage. He hasn't given any sources, and I can't find any mention in the online media. Do you have any source which might confirm this.-gadfium 00:19, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure if I am doing this right (am very new to Wikipedia ) but the news is true. The page has since been updated to note cause of death as being a heart attack. You will also find it is shown on the Stuff and New Zealand Herald webpages. 202.89.153.240 02:19, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Claire's Unnatural Twin

[edit]

Thanks for saving Claire's Unnatural Twin. Does the book you cited have a couple of words to expand My Deviant Daughter too? One para would be enough.

(And no, this isn't (isn't meant to be) an exercise in obscurities, just selected interesting indie sounds. (In this case about which not very much info ever made it across to the west island.)) -- Kevin Ryde 22:32, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'll see what I can do. I may be able to contribute a bit to that one anyway (since I vaguely know Jeff Harford). Grutness...wha? 02:10, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Small world :-). Snapper is probably the only other NZ band I've got secret plans for, should be plenty in google to get that started. -- Kevin Ryde 20:52, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your signature

[edit]

You need to get things nested correctly. The server administrators turned off the capability of the server tidying up after incorrectly nested stuff in order to improve performance, so that's what the problem is. Move the "<font color=green><small>''" from before the pair of left braces to after the next pipe in your signatureand I think it'll be all fixed up. Caerwine 22:54, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually that wasn't the problem at all, but thanks for the suggestions - that mismatching came about because I tried about 20 different things to get it working properly yesterday. What you saw was one of the "experiments". Apparently you now have to use raw signature if you use html, and font color must now always be placed in quote marks. Don't ask me why. I think my sig works now, though sadly I can no longer make the date a different colour. I'm going to have to go round repairing yesterday's signatures... Grutness...wha? 00:29, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
IIRC, XML requires quotes for attribute values, so probably the tidying package added them and then the parser needed to see them to recognize that it was a valid attribute. That makes sense since it simplifies the parser's job and it previously could count on the tidier to add them where needed. Caerwine 00:55, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

sheep and PCO

[edit]

gday mate, good to hear from ya! I have a watcher over my user page, and he is almost an admin person himself (i'd say by christmas).. good stuff! Maybe it was just the one track, I don't have the full collection of PCO, I was very grieved at the death of the man himself - but I am not sure which member of PCO was the kiwi connection from memory, too much wiki entry stuff in brain - and I'll blame the bloody saanen for my general memory loss (see my user page for that), cheersvcxlor 11:03, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Erlinda K. Alburo expand tag

[edit]

Hello! As I was random-walking through Wiki today, I came across your expand tag at Erlinda K. Alburo. A check over to the RfE page revealed nothing on this page or why the expand tag was put in. I was wondering if you could clarify this for me, as I'd love to help out with this article. Thanks! --Martin Osterman 17:39, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mistaken identity - not me! Grutness...wha? 04:57, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarification! :) Sorry about the mixup! --Martin Osterman 06:13, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The 3Ds versus John Jamieson

[edit]

http://www.flyingnun.co.nz/archive_site/bands/3ds/3dcontroversy.html says police commissioner John Jamieson objected to The 3Ds song Baby's On Fire. This is a little joke to promote the single, isn't it? Plenty of strange things happen when art meets constabulary; do you, with your intimate knowledge of all things musical in Dunedin, happen to know if there's any truth to the story? A send-up of something real perhaps? -- Kevin Ryde 23:25, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I corrected to a B-side and xreffed Brian Eno, I didn't recognise it as by him. I've done as much as I think I know for now, so feel free to expand. -- Kevin Ryde 23:27, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Auckland_urban_districts

[edit]

Hi James

I posting a quick note regarding the above category, as I believe you are an NZ admin?

I am interested in expanding the articles in the above category and to that point I have started updating links for articles such as point North Island reference in location template to North Island.

I noted that some suburbs are doubled up such as:

Point Chevalier Remuera Takapuna Te Papapa, etc.

I was wondering what the correct procedure/protocal is for looking to amalgamate these would be? I am still a newbie with Wikipedia and thought I should seek answers before I did any more. Thanks for any help you can provide. --Tom Webb 19:08, 30 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
