AFT5 newsletter

Hey all :). A couple of quick updates (one small, one large)

First, we're continuing to work on some ways to increase the quality of feedback and make it easier to eliminate and deal with non-useful feedback: hopefully I'll have more news for you on this soon :).

Second, we're looking at ways to increase the actual number of users patrolling and take off some of the workload from you lot. Part of this is increasing the prominence of the feedback page, which we're going to try to do with a link at the top of each article to the relevant page. This should be deployed on Tuesday (touch wood!) and we'll be closely monitoring what happens. Let me know if you have any questions or issues :). Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 14:34, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Emily Williamson

Hello! Your submission of Emily Williamson at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! LauraHale (talk) 21:00, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

It has been two weeks, and there has been no evidence of any attempt to address the issues pointed out in the review. Please respond on the review page to indicate whether you are still interested in pursuing this nomination. Thank you. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:06, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the reminder BlueMoonset. I was able to resolve most of the sourcing issues, but the close paraphrasing may require a rewrite. I've withdrawn the nomination. Gobōnobō + c 01:26, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Express scripts logo.png)

Thanks for uploading File:Express scripts logo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:14, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Sandra Fluke, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Attorney (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

DYK for Isis Pogson

Wanted to add thanks for suggesting this DYK on Isis Pogson. It was exciting to a wikipedia newbie like me that an article I created would end up on the front page. I checked the hits - not quite enough for the hall of fame, but still 78% of people who've viewed the article did so yesterday. Nice. :) I'll be on the watch for more ideas for DYK from Women Astronomers. :) KarenLMasters (talk) 10:59, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

This was my pleasure. I had hoped that nominating articles from the Ada Lovelace Day event would encourage editors as well as providing more visibility for women and our efforts to close the gender gap. Let me know if you have another potential DYK woman astronomer as I'd love to help. Gobōnobō + c 08:58, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Gobonobo..most of the students in the class will post the articles by early next week.. I have already moved ny article in the main space.. I have to do more edits as I got peer review and comments from Prof. Gunseli. Couple of students are editing existing articles, and rest are contributing new articles. The idea was to have a first draft of the final paper which all students will post on their sandbox and after the peer review can move their articles to main space. If you need any further details, kindly let me know.. Thanks.. Diksha41 (talk) 21:38, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

Question about editing citations on the Family Economics article

Hi Gobonobo, I am hoping you can help with this article. This was a stub class article, which a student in my class built upon. It has been difficult for the student to improve upon the references. I did some edits on the Intro now and wanted to remove the sentence attached to the references in [3] and keep [3] where it appears later in the Introduction section. I worry that this edit will upset the entire referencing system used. If I remove [3] will it automatically renumber the references? Can you help sort this problem? Thanks.BerikG (talk) 20:52, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

I've adjusted the referencing style so that the references are "inline" or automatically numbered. Basically, each reference beginning with <ref> and ending with </ref> will create a footnote and appear in the references section. Numbered footnotes are then automatically determined by the order they appear in the article. I believe the reference that was [3] is the Bergstrom reference, which is now [4]. I've adjusted the reference so that removing the first iteration will not be a problem. Gobōnobō + c 22:46, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for solving this problem and very quickly.BerikG (talk) 07:03, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Question on editing an existing article

Gobonobo: The article Employment Discrimination is currently being edited and expanded by a student of mine in her sandbox. Once she moves the edited article to the mainspace, will the edited version replace the one that is currently on Wikipedia? Thanks. BerikG (talk) 06:15, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Hmm. If I understand you, then yes. If the current contents of User:Orhand12/sandbox are cut and pasted over the contents at employment discrimination, the previous version would be erased and I'm pretty sure that wouldn't go over very well. I tried to discuss this previously with Orhand12 and was unsure whether the intention was to expand the employment discrimination article or to create a new article. There's more material there than could be reasonably added to a section of the employment discrimination article. It might be best to just start a new article at Gender discrimination and the workplace, but it seems that the article entirely focuses on cases in the United States. Gobōnobō + c 06:36, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
Okay. Since the sandbox article seems to only consider gender discrimination in US workplaces, a new article's title should reflect that. Something along the lines of Gender discrimination in United States workplaces. Gobōnobō + c 06:48, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. She won't delete the current article wholesale. I told her to copy the existing article into her sandbox and retain some of it (incorporate it into her new version). I think retaining it under the current title should be OK: The evidence and theories are applicable everywhere. Only the policies should be designated as specific to the US.BerikG (talk) 07:13, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
Gobonobo: the article Employment Discrimination is ready to move to the mainspace. But for some reason, I could not move it to the mainspace. The old version is still there. Could you help? Thanks.BerikG (talk) 07:16, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
I've gone ahead and cut/pasted the article into employment discrimination. The software doesn't allow moves to articles that already exist. Gobōnobō + c 08:07, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank you Gobonobo! Is the procedure for revising an existing article to cut and paste the entire new text after deleting the old article? I thought the author revising an article would copy the old article into her/his sandbox and after completing the revisions move it back as "article." Please confirm.BerikG (talk) 20:12, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
You're quite welcome. Major rewrites and large changes to articles should be proposed on the talk page first, of course. If there are no objections, then copying the article into a user sandbox, making changes and then copying/pasting the revised version back works.
The move function can be used for new articles where the target name does not already have an article, as was done for gender inequality in China here. For this type of move, there is a drop down menu before the field where you enter the new title that is set at 'User'. This needs to be changed to 'Article' prior to moving.
If an article already exists, as with employment discrimination, you won't be able to use the move function to copy an article from the sandbox to the article space. For this type of move, once an article is ready in the sandbox, open the edit window, select all, and copy. Then go to the existing article, open the edit window, select all, delete, and paste. I hope that helps. Gobōnobō + c 02:41, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Breaking the Taboo

Excuse me, but could you please explain why you have renamed the page for my favorite album, Breaking the Taboo by Loudness? Viriniĉo (talk) 23:25, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi Viriniĉo. I moved the page because there was another work with the same name which also has an article. WP:PRIMARYTOPIC is the relevant guideline. There's a hatnote at the film's article, so readers will still be able to find the Loudness album if that is what they are looking for. Gobōnobō + c 04:43, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

It may take a few minutes from the time the email is sent for it to show up in your inbox. You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{You've got mail}} or {{ygm}} template.

Evenrød (talk) 02:11, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi Evenrød. I didn't see a recent email, but I remember one from back in March. I'm guessing this is in regards to Indian Larry. I was unable to find any photographs of him that were released under a free license, so I've uploaded a photo taken by Timothy White. Let me know if that was what you were looking for. Cheers, Gobōnobō + c 02:51, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
Hey Gobonobo. Yeah not sure where the email I sent today disappeared to. Another dimension or a parallel universe would be my best guess though. Yeah I was actually hoping to upload an Indian Larry image that someone had given me permission to use, contingent on me touching bases with them again. So If I go through with that know that I appreciate you finding an image, and writing up the usage rational etc. Also, Thanks for rating the article. Evenrød (talk) 06:01, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
Feel free to swap out the image I've added if you'd like. A freely licensed image would of course be much preferable. Gobōnobō + c 06:10, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks again Gobonobo for you help with this. I noticed yesterday that the ratings in two categories for this article were cleared for some reason. I've seen a similar thing occur with other articles. What does this mean? Evenrød (talk) 23:56, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
I think that you are referring to the Article Feedback ratings at the bottom of the page. I have no idea why it's not showing any ratings for two of the categories. I know that they are in the process of deploying Version 5 of the tool, so it could be related to that, but I've been unable to find any specifics. After I submitted my own ratings for the article, I was able to see ratings for all the categories. My guess is it's just a bug. Gobōnobō + c 03:08, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
