Thank you for including the hook. I think you may be missing the point that date requests are very common for the main page. Both WP:TFA and WP:POTD use them all the time to improve the quality of the main page by making it more relevant. For example, my only WP:FP is likely going to be on the main page for Opening Day. In this case, I consciously expanded an article five days before I wanted it to goo on the main page because of an event that would be occurring on that date. I've responded to yours on Ioeth's talk. If you took a moment to consider that perhaps my actions aren't motivated by a bad faith attempt to pillory you, we might make some progress. I've already told you what you need to do to extract yourself out of the death spiral. You walked into a situation you were not familiar with, things got off on a bad foot, and you made some particularly bad choices in assuming bad faith, as in wondering if Turgidson set you up. When someone tells me that my quest to dispel the legacy of half a century of Soviet lies and oppression proves your assertion of the possibility of axe-grinding, that is not the road to consensus. My motivation? I recently read that some Soviet "historian" just published a book based on Estonian archives "proving" the deportation of Baltic peoples in cattle cars is all a big lie. On bygones being bygones, that requires an apology for any behavior which might have been the source of misunderstanding. On the one hand you appear to be conciliatory, on the other, you refuse to back off of anything you have said at any time--which signals not conciliatory. It's not your initial position that's the problem, where I am personally concerned, at least, it's your "Aha! There's your proof blown up right in your face" response. You appear upset (comment elsewhere) that I'm harping on requiring an apology. Your petard hoisting retort was an attack on my integrity. There have been so many vituperative attacks on Wikpedia on editors' integrity (including people outright being called Nazis) that one cannot simply walk away from aspersions cast on their integrity. You claim you've only wanted to achieve conciliation, this while nominating an article for AfD, opening up an AN/I and accusing multiple editors of breaches of incivility.

If you genuinely wish for bygones to be bygones, that will only be accomplished by your apologizing that you did not realize your actions (tagging, AfD, AN/I, accusations of incivility) mirrored attack tactics editors have regularly used in the past in attempts to discredit Eastern European positions and articles, and you regret all the misunderstanding that subsequently ensued, including appearing to confirm, as in your exchange with me, the cause of Eastern Europe shedding half a century of Soviet oppression and misinformation as axe-grinding.

I for one, and can only speak for myself, there is no bloc, am perfectly happy to acknowledge that I perceived your response to my defense of Eastern European editors as proof of bad faith on your part and your unwillingness to apologize as proof of your intransigence, and that it's not surprising the situation degenerated as it did.

I would venture there are two editors (assuming you haven't accused more) who would also expect you to retract your accusations of incivility.

Normally I wouldn't spend any more time on this, but being that you're not a regular editor in this pace, I suspect you have no idea that your behavior throughout this affair has mirrored classic attack tactics which the Eastern European editing community has been subjected to for a very long time. —PētersV (talk) 19:14, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Jaakobou ArbCom

I debated putting this on the evidence page here, but then decided against it. I don't know what problems there are at EE, but I don't believe I-P is as bad (perhaps partly for the reasons I give below!).

To Gatoclass -> I don't think we should be despondent. The biggest problem in I-P conflict articles is individual editors, badly informed and badly behaved. There is a third problem, which is bad sources. A big portion of this third problem could easily be dealt with by a modest extension of WP:EXTREME. We virtually bar all Palestinian sources at the moment, apparently on the basis they're all hate-sites. Apply that same standard to Western sources, and Wikipedia articles on I-P would instantly become around 4 times better. We'd hardly need to block anyone (other than editors we know have really serious problems). PR^talk 12:31, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

I agree that there isn't much to do about too many U.S. articles. I did notice that some updaters have been promoting groups with zero U.S. articles which is the cause of the current problem. Since we are over a day ahead of schedule, I think we should short the next group. I think that it should run without the article that you added and save it for the next group. I was taking my time to promote this group. I did notice it was already late. I'm getting sleepy since it's almost midnight here, so I think I'll let this group wait some more for someone else to promote. I would be willing to promote it if you want to do the crediting. use of newer DANFS template

Hi Gatoclass -- I was just browsing new articles and notice your USS Noble (APA-218) article, based on DANFS material. I've had limited involvement with DANFS and wikiproject Ships, but i understand there is a new version of DANFS template that allows you to include a link to the specific DANFS article you are sourcing from, in a new article. Yeah, see I was concerned because most think of Pont Neuf as the oldest, when in fact, Pont Neuf is the oldest INTACT bridge.....so.....I thought I would create an uncontroversial nom. However, now that you point it out, I think just saying that the Pont Notre-Dame is the oldest bridge in Paris is best. See the Alt. Anyway, I do think it's a pretty interesting point. Donna Eden quotes

I have a question. I changed "energy medicine" on Donna Eden's page to Energy medicine (i.e., with wiki link) and you reverted that to "energy medicine". What's your rationale? As used on that page, my interpretation of the quoted version (i.e., "energy medicine") is to make it sound more questionable, as in, 'Bob liked to call himself an "athlete" even though all he did was lift beers'. Question on DYK feedback

You did the review for Environment of Florida, and noted that a photograph would be a good addition to the nomination for the "featured" DYK. My concern is that, although most of the photos in the article are quite nice (I took a good deal of time to select them), none of them relate to the hook (none of them are fish). Should I come up with a different hook (with the photos in mind), or should I find a fish picture to add?

I found one photo of an exotic, taken in Florida at Image:Channa marulius.jpg, but it's not a particularly attractive photo. Most of the exotics (of the ones that have pictures) are pictures from public aquaria in Europe, or home aquaria. I'm not too keen about including them, but I'll go along with any recommendation you have. Horologium (talk) 23:26, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi! A few weeks ago you made a suggestion at WP:VPP about having some way to share information from books/ request info from other users. As someone mentioned, there's WP:LIBRARY, but that does not seem an easy way to manage large numbers of books. As long as you promoted one of them (though not the one I would have picked), I'm OK. But I still can't see how you missed cites that were at the end of the sentences with the hook facts. Cites that had been in the article since I first added the information they supported. Cites that are of reliable sources: Bowie Kuhn's own memoirs, the decision text and other Supreme Court opinions.

And how are those difficult to confirm, as your message on my page seemed to imply? I provided a link to Kuhn's memoir page at Google Books ... was that not coming up? Supreme Court decisions are often available several different places online since they're PD and are usually marked as to the page in the Supreme Court Reports.

Could you at least explain how you came to the conclusion that I had left no inline cites?

The page number is in both cites ... {{cite book}} wedges it in between the publisher and the ISBN. Clicking the link in both cases would have taken you right to the page. I assumed that anyone checking the sources would have clicked that link ... I do when I check sources.

The third one is to the Supreme Court decision ... the "XXX U.S. XXX" is the commmon case citation format for the Supreme Court Reports. Since they're PD, they're usually reprinted all over the Internet, and in SCOTUS case articles we usually don't link to any version, not the Findlaw or Justia version (in some cases they're even at wikisource), at least not from each individual footnote. As for the Supreme Court thing, yes I know it's not obvious to everyone but it's the convention used in WP:SCOTUS. Begin/terrorist

I once argued, to no effect, that at least the Stern (Lehi)gang fitted the Wiki rules because it described itself as engaged in terrorist actions, but couldn't get past Amoruso. I haven't checked those rules, but I still wonder why, peculiar to Wiki, one cannot write the word 'terrorism' when that was the strategy, as it has been with many Palestinian groups (where efforts to make it stick have been vigorous and in some cases successful). In Begin and Shamir's case, a good many Israeli and Jewish experts of quality, (not leftwing antui-Zionist partisans) on the history of the period readily describe the Irgun as a 'terrorist organization'. It is not really objected to in mainstream scholarship. Cf.

Still, what academic literature accepts, is, I suppose not quite what Wiki accepts in these instances. I never push the point myself, except to remonstrate by counter-example when the other side, doing what Stern and Irgun did, is somehow branded as ontologically terroristic. Second Intifada

I fully agree with your comments at the RfC there. My question is, what do we do when entrenched partisans canvassed to join a debate refuse to acknowledge what the vast majority of sources say? You have witnessed and participated in the discussion over the last three months. If we cannot achieve consensus, what options do we have to ensure that the text reflects the sources? I don't want to end up with an edit-war. It is however, unacceptable for "wave of violence" to replace "uprising" in the lead. Letting it stand as such for three months was frankly far too generous. I think your proposal to go to, is it, AE? as mentioned on the Noticeboard, more than proper. I have always had a deep reluctance to make official complaints, especially with User:Jaakobou, despite many deep differences of opinion over edits, but by the looks of it, Jaakabou is simply unaware of the gravity of that offence. I'm old fashioned. Blokes can take things on the chin, but men must not bully women with impunity, and indeed, refuse to withdraw their aggression until the aggrieved party complains. The innuendo in that is monstrous, and has, for me, tipped the scales. Some nuances may escape the outside observer, but if you do register a complaint, I will add a note detailing why that image is deeply offensive in context. A few comments regarding today's events. It isn't easy to mentor someone post-arbitration who has gotten deeply embroiled in an ethnic dispute. If it looks like I waltz up, blindly praise him, and depart--well that's not exactly the case. Jaakobou and I have spent a substantial portion of the last twelve hours in extended chats. I've set aside other work to focus on this. It's not a situation I take lightly, or one that anybody wants to see repeated.

Jaakobou did something thoughtless; not maliciously, but it was a you just don't go there gaffe and he was slow to realize its seriousness. Perhaps because Jaakobou wasn't comprehending, or because the context was ambiguous, another editor interpreted the picture and caption in an entirely different light than the one intended. So when it came to my attention (facepalm) the thing had been simmering for days and was in the process of boiling over. Jaakobou and I had been so pleased to see his featured nominations pass. Now this...

So I advised him to take out the dig at another editor and apologize immediately. He did to the best of his ability at that time (he gets it better now that we've discussed this at greater length). And as soon as he took his first steps in the right direction he got hit with a block warning and two noticeboard threads. If the warning and threads had come before he started trying to make amends, then I wouldn't have objected at all. With that timing, though? Really drags a guy down and slows down the process of setting things right.

The fact is reliably sourced in the 4th reference. The length of its non-table part looks good. 1498 characters is close enough if that's the actual count but my eyes say its probably higher. It's well written and date is verified. Royalbroil 13:55, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

It happened to me too in last few days and its annoying. Suggest we/you raise this on wikipedia talk. Making you an admin wouldn't help cos we shouldnt be tweaking things on the main page. We only need to do that when we've $%^&ed up. We need a flag on the page that says "still fiddling please wait" that is good say for 10 minutes of fiddling (even if it is red!). Or maybe simpler ... do not load the page (unless requested or agreed) unless it has been free of edits for 10 minutes. Anyway ... commiserations. Victuallers (talk) 16:04, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Gatoclass, I must say I am quite admirative of your courage in standing for User:DreamGuy on the Administrator notice board. Your arguments make a lot of sense. Although I am fairly confident with English, I am not a native speaker, and I am quite envious of your ability to put out a strong, detailed, argument. I myself feel I have been relentlessly attacked for unfair reasons by some of the same people who are attacking DreamGuy, and I tend to sympathize with his case, although I don't known many of the details yet.
