Western League top division fully-pro

Hello Steve. What exactly does the source say about this? I see the league was split into 'professional' and 'amateur' sections, but the former could also cover semi-pro. I appreciate things were slightly different in those days, but were Trowbridge Town and Warmley really fully-professional for two seasons? Number 57 14:47, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

@Number 57: In the book I referenced (Byrne, Stephen; Jay, Mike (2003). Bristol Rovers Football Club: The Definitive History 1883–2003. Stroud: Tempus. ISBN 0-7524-2717-2.) it says "A Western League committee meeting on 26 May 1897 voted unanimously to adopt professionalism from the start of the following season", then later goes on to say "The Western League established a Professional Division of eight clubs". I've also found a quote in another book by one of the same authors (Jay, Mike (1987). Bristol Rovers F.C.: A Complete Record 1883–1987. Derby: Breedon Books. ISBN 0-907969-26-7.) saying "The good standard of the Western League in the late 1890s resulted in a marked increase in support from the Bristol public and thus paved the way for the intruduction of professionalism in 1897. The five oldest clubs in the area, Eastville Rovers, Warmley, Bedminster, Bristol St George and South End (who later amalgamated with Bedminster and became Bristol City in 1900), embarked upon an ambitious programme of matches, fielding paid players." There is also a report about the adoption of professionalism on the British Newspaper Archive here, but unfortunately I don't have access to it at the moment so I'm unable to read what it says on the matter.
It certainly doesn't surprise me that Warmley would become professional, they were arguably the biggest club in the west of England until the emergence of Bristol City & Rovers. The problem is there was no such thing as true full professionalism in this era - all players (even those in the Football League) had to work other jobs during the summer, hence the slightly vague wording of "fielding paid players". — GasHeadSteve [TALK] 19:33, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
