[edit]Hello GMorris419. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.
Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.
Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:GMorris419. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=GMorris419|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}
. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. I see that you declared a COI; if you work for the school, you must make the stricter paid editing disclosure. 331dot (talk) 16:23, 11 February 2023 (UTC)
- I am not being paid, directly or indirectly, in any way possible. I am only trying to add a specific subject on Wikipedia that has yet to have been added. GMorris419 (talk) 15:52, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
- What is the nature of your conflict of interest? 331dot (talk) 16:02, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
- My conflict of interest is the fact I attend this school. Due to this, I thought it would be appropriate for me to clarify there is a COI, since there is a change I could be bias in my writings. GMorris419 (talk) 13:57, 22 February 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for your answer. 331dot (talk) 14:00, 22 February 2023 (UTC)
- You're welcome. GMorris419 (talk) 14:16, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
- Should I remove the Conflict of Interest box on my homepage if the COI is only intended for paid contributions? GMorris419 (talk) 14:55, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
- COI includes more than just paid contributions; COI is any connection at all. All paid editing is a COI, but not all COI editing is paid editing. We ask people to declare conflicts of interest, but it is not a Terms of Use requirement as declaring paid editing is. You should keep the COI notice. 331dot (talk) 16:40, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Okay, thank you for informing me of this. I will re-add the COI declaration to my account. GMorris419 (talk) 18:18, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
