Down Syndrome article

I would like to add the following information to the article on Down Syndrome, but editing is currently blocked. In the section on history, after the reference to Professor Jérôme Lejeune, I would like to add:

In his last years, Professor Lejeune did research into the question of metabolic abnormalities in persons with Down Syndrome. After his death in 1994, his research has been continued by Dr. Paddy Jim Baggot. Some success at identifying abnormalities and finding treatments has been experienced. In later research, it has been shown that measures to treat biochemical deficiencies should begin at about the 22nd week of pregnancy. Some parents are currently giving supplements to their children with Down Syndrome, which has resulted in some improvement of their capabilities.

Thank you for your response. I will see what I can do. Femcofounder 10:27, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

I have succeeded in editing the Down Syndrome wiki. I also added material in the section on cognitive development. Thanks for your help! Femcofounder 11:32, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi - please do NOT allow advertising for vitamin supplements anywhere near the Downs Syndrome page - these are highly controversial and there is no evidence to show any benefits. cheers! Excalibur 20:25, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi again - thanks for the advice - I have removed the offending paragraph! I'll let Femcofounder know why I think this paragraph is inappropriate . Excalibur 20:43, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

I would contest Excalibur's deletion simply because people should have a right to know everything they can about DS. The most important fact about the research is not that supplements are being tested or used, but the general direction of the research. It has been found that DS folks have certain heightened needs for certain nutrients. What isn't clear yet is whether or not it can be fixed by supplements or whether this is a more profound problem than that. I don't think anybody has claimed that it is a done deal that supplements work. This is ongoing research. The most important information is that this is a direction some researchers are working on. It is hardly a commercial issue at this point, because as far as I know, nobody is selling these particular supplements in a commercial way. There was no attempt in my edit to advertise any vitamin supplements. This information is simply about research that is being done. In fact, you will find no real information on what supplements they are testing on the site, as far as I have been able to determine. So this is not about allowing advertising for vitamin supplements at all.

I see you've responded to Excalibur's message on your Talk page. If you do wish to reinstate your edits, it's probably best to ask for further opinions at the Down syndrome Talk page. I also urge you to cite statements regarding clinical research to reliable, unbiased scholarly publications; surely some of this research—which may, of course, warrant mention in the article—has been published in peer-reviewed journals. The Michael Fund website is probably not the most adequate source here. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 17:13, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

The Tic Code

Ack, our edits got crossed with hers as I was trying to get out the door; now I see it was you who removed the copyvio tags (whew). I'm back in now, and will have another look after dinner. Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:52, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

Hello. This is a group thanks to all of you for your many comments and help in making the Bruno Maddox article reach FA. All the copyedits really helped polish up the article. I hope to work with you all once again. Best of luck on your own projects, BillDeanCarter 00:50, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Elvis Presley article page protection

Unfortunately the Elvis Presley page illicites the spur of vandals. This diff [1] indicates as such. Anonymous user 82.* I believe has done this in the past - and posted comments on the talk page around the lines "Elvis stole rock music" or "Elvis was a racist" if I'm thinking of the same account. Might be best to block that anonymous account to prevent this or to restore page protection to prevent the vandalism. Does 'page protection' prevent going to 'featured status'? This is one major concern of mine. --Northmeister 15:31, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Neverending vandalism...

Things at Simple English are getting out of hand, sweetie. I'm tempted to go and semi protect every userpage, but I won't do so without permission, so let me know if you want me to protect yours. Love, Phaedriel - 02:41, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Spacticity Image, Thanks

Thanks for the nice comment on the spacticty image. I'm still really learning, but this is as good a place as any to practice, and I felt that was an article that really could do with a nice picture. I was scared to say I could "contribute with a good level at vector graphics", incase people thought that that image wasn't very good. I.e. it's better to more skilled than you say you are, than to say you're more skilled than you truly are. Bilz0r 23:56, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

Re: Your RFA was successful

Thanks, Fvasconcellos! I've been honestly humbled by the support I've received, especially from those whose contributions here I've long respected. I'll do my best to wield the mop & bucket wisely, and never forget that we're working on an encyclopedia! Regards, Espresso Addict 20:27, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Melatonin

I respectfully had to change the title back to "Dangerous Side Effects". The potential injury done to the human body due to this supplement may be permanent and is thus much more severe than indicated by the term "Adverse". (God G.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by GodGnipael (talkcontribs) 02:13, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your response. I think that we have come to an important philosophical/ethical conundrum, which is medical in nature and may directly involve the health and safety of the general public. I was doing research several months ago. At that time, Wikipedia had such a gushy and positive article about melatonin (it appeared to be written by supplement suppliers), with no mention of the potential dangerous effects that can occur. I agree with you that most articles such as Income Taxes or Abe Lincoln should fall into the general guidelines you sent me. However, I think that if there are peer reviewed scientific studies that have found dangerous side effects, they need to be expressed as such.

I know you are an administrator, and I am wondering if you might talk to other administrators that have faced this medical/medication/supplement situation before. I personally think that if there is supporting evidence of harm or potential danger, then that information is not opinion or biased, but an absolute. And the scientifically validated information should be used as an expression of truth that can be used to benefit society, that is what the scientific method is all about. —Preceding unsigned comment added by GodGnipael (talkcontribs) 03:12, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Aminocoumarin

Thanks for the help with references. I am currently new to this area and am trying to expand on information relating to this class of antibiotics which are not widely used in clinical medicine due to toxicity issues. Novobiocin a member of this class is commonly mistaken for an aminoglycoside (which is incorrect) and have edited this page to this effect (still needs a bit of work though formatting-wise) if you could keep an eye on it for me and say I'm not going wrong I would be greatful 16:48, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

You're welcome

You're welcome; that was a quick-decision block too after an equally fast edit-scanning (not a habit, don't worry). Glad I was correct with that one. :) Acalamari 17:22, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

I hope your "personal concerns" are nothing serious. If you have any time, perhaps you could help out at the Joseph Priestley peer review. I need some help deciding what to keep and what to delete. Thanks. Awadewit | talk 22:08, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

watchlist

Hi there, I don't know about you, but one reason I have such a large watchlist is that I use it as a way to bookmark interesting articles. I don't keep close watch on every single item. How about you? --Kyoko 21:50, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, popups are handy. I probably only keep fairly close watch on 100 articles at most. --Kyoko 22:01, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

AN vs AN/I

To stop cluttering Arcadian's talk I'll respond here. On retrospect AN would have been good too, I just never spend much time there to know the difference between the two. Garion96 (talk) 21:23, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Nah, no big deal. I usually think of AN/I for "issues needing immediate action". Either will get attention to the matter at hand, though. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 00:16, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Probably my fault; I went back to the check why a BOT warning was already there. How are you? Are you around/unbusy this weekend? GimmeBot is out of action for a week or two, I'm traveling Friday–Monday, and if Raul does a promote/archive at FAC, you're the only other person left who knows how to botify the FACs (since Yomangani is gone). Raul knows we're both out, so I'm hoping he won't promote/archive until I'm back on Tuesday, but I wondered if you were available in case. User:SandyGeorgia/sandbox SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:38, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks ! Just in case. I'll be tied up most of Saturday, but may have some internet access Friday night and Sunday, so I'll keep an eye out, too. Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:09, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

The impersonator

It must be my week: I've had three spoofers here recently and now and impersonator on another Wiki! As Ryan Postlethwaite said, I'm "Mr. Popular". :) Acalamari 15:59, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, would you mind asking them to change the name for me please? I would ask it myself, but I only know about two or three words of Spanish! Acalamari 17:16, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Pharm-stub subtypes

I still don't really see much point to it, unless maybe if the stubs put the articles into individual categories for better sorting. Not sure if stubs do this or not? Anyway, I'll still personally use the general {{pharma-stub}} tag, since it's easier for me than remembering all the different stub tags. But if others want to use separate stub tags, I won't hold them up. Cheers! Dr. Cash 23:16, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Ok, that seems to make sense. Is there a place where all these stub tags and categories are listed altogether for reference? Dr. Cash 04:00, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Cp2Mo2(CO)6

I'd appreciate links on how to draw pictures like this, because its very pretty. But the structure is so imperfect that I would discourage you from posting it on the article. It implies more symmetry than is really there. The centroids of the Cp rings are not coaxial with the Mo-Mo bond. Here's a ref: Inorg Chem 1974, p 1080. I cant really think of an organic compound that resembles it but its a little like staggered ethane.--Smokefoot 03:34, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
