[edit]Thanks for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia. Thanks. Vegaswikian 03:33, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
You know enough about Wikipedia to ask that the article not be deleted, but you may not know why it could be deleted. Basically the concept of 'cruft' is about excessive granularity/detail in articles that are not of interest to an encyclopedia-reading public. Your article on the Aryth Empire, for example, tries to leverage the similarity in name to the Ocean in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. But not even every (or even most) person and place in the series itself deserves a separate article here at Wikipedia. I would encourage you, however, to consider adding the Aryth Empire, and any other Wheel of Time-related articles, to A Wheel of Time Wiki over at Wikicities, which is dedicated to that task in as much detail as you like. Otherwise it is likely you will continue to see your contributions here removed, as they're really not very global in scope. -- nae'blis (talk) 22:30, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Help!
[edit]Why does it matter if I have these things posted? If you think they are dumb, who will find them?
- Hi beans (can I call you beans?). You've got an excellent question, actually. There's a lot of ways people might find your little jokes:
- Google links heavily to Wikipedia, so someone searching for cheese or Marek may come across what you've posted. Then Wikipedia's credibility goes down.
- Wikipedia has a random article function that can send someone to an entry completely at random; if what they come across is a joke, or nonsense, it can hurt Wikipedia's credibility.
- It may be difficult to understand why Wikipedia doesn't accept EVERYTHING, even vanity pages or joke pages. The end-goal of the entire project, though, is to build an encyclopedia that can be used in the same way you would use Brittanica or World Book. It's not a webhost, blog, or chatroom. While there's a fair amount of community and conversation that goes on behind-the-scenes, the overall project is actually serious business.
- But that doesn't mean you can't help! Any time you see spelling errors, mistakes of fact, incomplete sentences, or missing articles on real/verifiable subjects that people might want to read about, you can be bold and change them! You're obviously already getting a better grasp of how the site works; I encourage you to use something like User:Fullofbeans\Sandbox to experiment, or your userpage itself if you like, to further explore the possibilities, codes, and syntax used here.
- I hope this somewhat answered your question, and that you will stay and contribute your enthusiasm and knowledge toward the project in the future. -- nae'blis (talk) 23:28, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Wheel of Time?
[edit]I personaly have never read it I just found out today that it existed and I asked Maxite if The Ocean is what the Empire was named after and he said "Maybe the origional creator said he liked it"
Helping against vandalism
[edit]Glad to hear it! I'm actually about done for the day so I'm going to give you some "reading assignments" that will help you understand the problem faced, and how to help:
- Wikipedia:Vandalism
- Wikipedia's Counter Vandalism Unit
- Please do not bite the newcomers, how to interact with new people who may not know what they're doing exactly yet.
- And if you're really bored and looking for reading material, start perusing the Wikipedia:Manual of Style.
- Thanks! -- nae'blis (talk) 23:56, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
- Hey there. I wanted to let you know that I'm personally pleased to see you taking Wikipedia seriously these days, and working on tagging articles for stubs and cleanup. Every little bit helps! -- nae'blis (talk) 07:00, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
Articles for Deletion
[edit]Hello there! Sorry to have to put your articles (Maxite, Aryth Empire) up for deletion, but they're just not suited to Wikipedia. I'd take a quick look at WP:BAI and WP:NOT to see what not to write on Wikipedia. But don't worry about the deletion - have fun contributing to real articles! File:Mefg4.jpg listed for deletion
[edit]A file that you uploaded or altered, File:Mefg4.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Files for deletion. Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.
