Abscess on the Jaw
Hi again. You've probably checked this archive but just in case here are the NZ papers (tip: the Otago Witness is usually the best). I'll also take a look in my (off-line) print sources. I'm afraid I don't have as much time to work on WP at the moment as I have a full-time job: no fun, but at least I'll be able to afford my broadband rental. Tigerboy1966 21:05, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Khewra Salt Mine DYK entry
Hello Froggerlaura! Thanks for reviewing DYK nomination of a fact from Khewra Salt Mine. I have tried expanding the article further as much as I can. So it may need to be reviewed again. Thanks! --SMS Talk 09:39, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
- Hi. Sorry for bothering you again, actually this rule wasn't applied strictly with my last and only nomination. I have added some more content in this article. Btw which tool do you use to do the word count? --SMS Talk 13:07, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
DYK for Cherimoya (horse)
On 20 April 2012, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Cherimoya (horse), which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Cherimoya's unanticipated victory at the 1911 Epsom Oaks (pictured), the only start of her career, left "the spectators too dumbfounded to cheer"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Cherimoya (horse). You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. St Leger Template
Just to let you know that I have got the St Leger Winners Template up and running. It needs a bit of tweaking (Fillies Triple Crown winners not indicated yet). We just need the 1000 Guineas winners Template for the full set. Tip: Parish Hall for the 2000 Guineas (although given the fact that I told everyone I know that Pathfork would beat Frankel in last year's race I wouldn't bet the house on it). Tigerboy1966 16:57, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
Tristan and La Fleche
As you've probably noticed, both of these are being reviewed for GA atm. Any help gratefully received. Thanks for your improvements to both. This would have to happen on one of THE big weekends of the year when I will be among those feverishly updating the 1,000 Guineas, 2,000 Guineas, Kentucky Derby articles. Pics
Thanks for adding pics to Rock On Ruby and Sprinter Sacre. I suspect that the latter article is going to get a LOT bigger in the next couple of years and having a picture will really help its progress. If you haven't taken a look at SS's victories, do check him out on youtube, he is one of those "shiver down the spine" horses: he has consistently made really good horses look like absolute rubbish. I also appreciate your additions to Tristan Tigerboy1966 17:33, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

Suggested article: Hobday Operation/Hobday Procedure AKA "Tieback". I would welcome an article on this topic. Needs someone with Horse Racing and Veterinary knowledge. That sounds like Froggerlaura to me. Tigerboy1966 13:36, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
Boxing
Sorry to keep pestering you, but I do work in sales so pestering people is what I do... I have been branching out into Boxing and I was wondering if you could use your pictorial wizardry to locate a usable image of the British boxer Freddie Mills. I tried uploading a picture I found onto commons but it was speedily deleted in under a minute. Tigerboy1966 17:43, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
- Brilliant, thanks for pic. It actually sums up Freddie Mills better than most of the conventional boxing pics. It's starting to look like a "proper" article now. Tigerboy1966 19:34, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Sergeant Reckless statue
I read a newspaper article about this horse today. A statute of her was just erected in Quantico. Lots of sources on this. I found your draft of the article by look for pics of her on Commons. I don't want to intrude on your work, but I also wouldn't mind helping. Montanabw may help too. User:Froggerlaura/Sandbox/2. Would it be okay to help work on your draft? For the glossary?
Was thinking that the term "connections" - as in the horse's "connections" -i.e. trainer/owner etc... might be good to have in the glossary? Do you want to add it, or would you object if I did? Montanabw(talk) 19:00, 17 August 2013 (UTC)
- Hmm.
We could also use "photo finish" in the glossary with a link to the article.Incidentally, this image is not a photo finish, but it shows the mirror at the finish line rather nicely, for a little-bitty racetrack. If you can think of a home for the image, feel free to pop it in, or make suggestions to me? Montanabw(talk) 21:48, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
- Hmmm. How about
"bullet works" and "black type"in the glossary? Actually, "workout" or "work" - as its meaning in horse racing is different from the same word for people... maybe a few more workout words that differ from people and other horse disciplines ... "jog" I know, I'm making more work for you, but you are so very good at popping this stuff in! Might not be a bad idea to toss in a few refs for some of the unreffed stuff when any of us have a chance (looking in mirror at self on that one...) :-) Montanabw(talk) 22:23, 22 August 2013 (UTC)
- Hmmm. How about
*Another: Blue hen. Montanabw(talk) 19:05, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
OK, I actually did something useful and added some definitions, reffed some unreffed stuff that was low-hanging fruit and then put "citation needed" tags on the stuff that I, um, was too lazy to go and dig up myself. Only a few things have no refs now, so should be easy to clean up. Montanabw(talk) 20:02, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

Pics??
Hi Froggerlaura, you are pretty good at finding freely licensed photos of race horses, Tigerboy1966 has been busy this week, any chance you can find anything for Mucho Macho Man, Mizdirection, Beholder (horse), or Groupie Doll? For that matter, most of the 2013 Breeders' Cup winners now have articles but not necessarily with photos. Montanabw(talk) 00:52, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
- I'll see what I can do. US horses are a lot harder to find CC pictures for because there are not many photographers willing to release usable images (even the awful ones on Flickr are copyrighted:/). I can find some of MMM, Dank and the French horses. I hear that Groupie Doll is staying in training (that's a 3 million dollar gamble IMHO). Froggerlaura ribbit 19:07, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
- Good luck! I agree about Flickr, I wonder if the all rights reserved is the default, would be nice if they'd do it like commons and make CC-GDFL the default and those who are professionals would then have to affirmatively enact an all rights reserved license. Any good places to look that allow a filter for creative commons license besides Flickr? Montanabw(talk) 17:55, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
- Youtube has a CC filter. FranceSire is pretty good and has a few Breeders' Cup videos. You have to be careful that the uploader has permission to release the image though. A few of FranceSire's racing images come from NBC, so those images are not usable as stills from the film. For 40-50s era horses you can also look through Hathi Trust's non-renewed copyright books for images. Froggerlaura ribbit 18:49, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

Madam Gay
Hi Laura. I'm sorry to ask you to preform a grim duty, but you are the best person to come to when researching the final fates of racehorses. Madam Gay won the Prix de Diane and was one of the best European fillies of 1981. At the end of the year, according to Timeform, she was sold do D. Wildenstein and sent to race in the United States. According to Equibase, she never raced in America and she has no foals listed on PQ. It does look as though she died shortly after being exported, but I can't find a source. Article currently at User:Tigerboy1966/sandbox11. Tigerboy1966 14:45, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
- I'll see what I can find in the stud book export records (80s are kind of spotty) or if she has foals in the US produce records. Froggerlaura ribbit 16:37, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, I know you will give it your best. Aricle now in mainspace as Madam Gay. Tigerboy1966 17:57, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
- Seems she just vanished. GSB lists her as exported to US in December 1981 and ASB confirms this as she is listed in the 1981 edition. She is not listed again in the ASB 1983 edition (latest edition I have access to). No produce records listed but they usually only record live foals and not breeding attempts or stillbirths. No online news references. Blood-horse may have a record, but their archives are not searchable online. Assume she died late 1981 or early 1982. Froggerlaura ribbit 14:27, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for your work. It's all very puzzling and sad. She went to the states to race, so I suppose a training injury is the most likely explanation. Tigerboy1966 20:48, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Genius!
Never thought to try for a screenshot off of European cc-licensed video. Prep your defense on the image talk page of the MMM photo. You seriously ROCK, girl! Now that you've done a miracle, any chance lightening could strike twice and you could get me a photo of Katherine Ritvo for her article (that I did up after the BC....) ;-) Montanabw(talk) 00:01, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
- I'll see what I can do. No free ones on a scan of the usual suspects. Trainers are hard because most of the causal photographers don't know their names and don't tag the pictures or name them something weird like 324928.jpg or something. I just found a Belmont pic of Shackleford (after 2 years :) the other day because of the last one. Froggerlaura ribbit 15:52, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
- LOL. I'll let you know what I hear from Image review checking; I think it will all be copacetic for GA, at least. In that film clip, there is a very short but momentarily mostly-clear shot of Kathy Ritvo at a wee bit after :23 but before :24 (she's the short blonde lady standing next to Stevens - she's shorter than he is), she blinks in a couple frames, but there's a split second that is reasonably flattering and someone with the right software might be able to grab it (want to try?). The image is too blurry and low quality on my computer but IF you can download at a higher bit rate and freeze it - the clip can go up to 1080 and at that size it's pretty clear (my computer just won't stream it...) FYI - you could probably do the same to improve the quality of the MMM pic you have already downloaded...might get rid of the blur of his legs) In the meantime, what do those {{ntsh|}} tags do?? (curious) Montanabw(talk) 23:35, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
- I'll try to get a Ritvo still (gonna be hard) and clean up the MMM pic. There is a guy that walks across MMM's head right after that frame (annoying fans :). The {{ntsh|}} tags allow list sorting order to be set by non-alphabetical means (ungraded stakes is lower class than grade 3 but higher than an allowance race). I haven't figured out where to put maiden races, at lowest end I guess? Froggerlaura ribbit 23:46, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

- Ah, that makes sense, thanks! Maiden races, hmm. In relation to cheap claiming races? I suppose the horses we do this for really won't be run as claimers, so irrelevant. Yeah, I think you are right, maiden at the bottom, at least for the articles I've been working on. Thanks for taking a whack at the MMM image. Thanks also for tackling the Ritvo pic; you did as good as could be done I think, given what we had to work with. Good crop, given the shot. There was sort of a split-second on the tape between her face being clear and her blink... Given that some anon did a drive-by and fixed her birth date (which I now presume is correct, but can't find it anywhere to be certain) someone who cares must be keeping an eye on the article, if they don't like the photo, maybe they can get someone to upload a better one! Image hunting?
Hi Froggerlaura, just started an article on Charles LoPresti. (Interesting person). Was wondering if you can do any magic and locate a free image of him, and/or Wise Dan. Flickr gave me a goose egg, even looking for stuff like "Photo#94582X&Y@" You seem to have the magic touch. (Did find some free images of Zenyatta, though. Maybe she'll be my next project to get to GA.) Any help appreciated! By the way, I have Mucho Macho Man at FAC, if you care to lurk. Montanabw(talk) 08:15, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

FA congratulations
Just a quick note to congratulate you on the promotion of Mucho Macho Man to FA status recently. If you would like to see this (or any other FA) appear as "Today's featured article" soon, please nominate it at the requests page; if you'd like to see an FA on a particular date in the next year or so, please add it to the "pending" list. In the absence of a request, the article may end up being picked at any time (although with 1,307 articles in Category:Featured articles that have not appeared on the main page at present, there's no telling how long – or short! – the wait might be).
You (and your talk-page stalkers) may also be interested to hear that there have been some changes at the TFA requests page recently. Nominators no longer need to calculate how many "points" an article has, the instructions have been simplified, and there's a new nomination system using templates based on those used for DYK suggestions. Please consider nominating another article, or commenting on an existing nomination, and leaving some feedback on your experience. If you'd got any TFA-related questions or problems, please let me know. Thanks, BencherliteTalk 13:37, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Your thoughts here? I might have been too snarky, and if I'm full of sh--, feel free to say so. ;-) Montanabw(talk) 05:55, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Question for you regarding copyright of racing silks at User_talk:Nikkimaria#FAC_reviews. Montanabw(talk) 06:22, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
Equibase maestro
OK, so I couldn't even find Churchill Downs for that day... how can you engineer a search on Equibase to get that? Montanabw(talk) 02:03, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
- You have to trick it a little. From the home page select Results tab which takes you to Full Charts Index > find track you want results for > select 'More' option > in historical charts select date you want, days with results for track are underlined. Similar in Racing Post but you can't search specific track or race, but as long as you know the date you find almost any result :) Froggerlaura ribbit 02:13, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
- Ah! That's kind of how I find the PPs on Brisnet- get any chart, figure out the code and swap dates/track for what I want! Aha! FYI, I have a sandbox you may want to play in, if you want, User:Montanabw/Kenneth_and_Sarah_Ramsey. So far, it's there because I found a good photo of Ken Ramsey and User:JockeyColours did up their silks for me. Whenvere i get it going, I already ahve the DYK hook in my head... something like "DYK that Kenneth and Sarah Ramesy win horse races with kittens?" That should hit the "quirky" slot and get some hits. I'm kind of hoping I can get the article up and to DYK for the Breeders' Cup. I'm probably too ambitious, but it would be cool to have something in a DYK slot for the two days of those races... Montanabw(talk) 18:44, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
