Your draft on: Brian E Kinsella
Hi ForsythiaJo, thank you so much for your help on setting up a template on my very first article. I’m new here, so I didn’t know how to make a template for the basic information (born, etc.). However, you removed a lot of pieces that I was trying to add in this bio. I’m trying to research and write biographies about people I think are undervalued or overlooked, who have done (in my opinion) remarkable things in their lives. It’s to try to spread some positive energy in our society. Is there a way I can do that, without it being considered: “Promotional”? I have checked all my references on this, and read the articles, to ensure I’m factual. Also, I thought adding Brian Kinsella’s entire career in a flow that was easy to read made sense. But you removed most of his career bullets. Is that considered promotional in a bio, or can I add that back in? I am very new here, so I am still learning, so I really appreciated your help on the template. Simply couldn’t figure that out. All the best Mwikiforce (talk) 11:12, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Mwikiforce! First of all I'd like to thank you for reaching out so kindly and with an open mind. My advice would be to try and stick as closely to presenting the facts of your subject as possible - which in the case of Kinsella, should not be an issue, as it seems he has indeed been doing a lot, and his work seems to have been reported on in reliable sources!
- We want readers to be able to understand a subject's important without telling them - ie, show don't tell. In an article, that means trying to avoid saying things like "a notable figure" or "a significant role", and describe how this person is notable/significant instead - "X person was the first to do..." or "Y was the head manager of Z project..." are fact based (and can thus be cited/double checked) and describe how the person is important.
- For example, one of the sentences I removed was "This is merely one of the many impactful initiatives Kinsella initiates and engages in, whenever help is needed". "Merely", "impactful", and "whenever help is needed" are all being used here to make Kinsella seem important, without explaining how he actually is. That is also a sentence which we have no way of fact checking, which is also of utmost importance here on Wikipedia.
- As to the formatting question, I think including Kinsella's career in brief in your article lede is fine, but I'd suggest writing it out in text rather than as bullet points, ie "Kinsella served in the US army from [date] to [date], and was stationed in... In [date], he began working on Wall Street...".
- Let me know if you have any other questions, either in general or on specific edits I made, or if you'd like any other input on your draft. Welcome to Wikipedia! ForsythiaJo (talk) 17:42, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hi ForsythiaJo,
- Thank you so much for the swift response. That is really nice of you to spend all this time on helping me. I SO appreciate it. What you said, all made sense to me, I will absolutely try to make it more "encyclopedic" :-) (I guess I was just too excited about my first attempt to write bio :-). Is it ok for me to change the order though? I'd like to put the newest thing first (Afghanistan).
- Also, despite you've provided me all this useful and helpful information, I have meanwhile run into another issue. A bot has removed all the images, claiming it's a copyright issue. But while I was researching this, I reached out to Brian E. Kinsella, and he was so kind to send me the images (of himself). But I don't have any tags or anything, and I'm a little worried about reaching out again and ask him for that. Do you have any ideas of what I can do about this?
- Thank you again, and thank you for the warm welcome and your time!
- I will try harder!
- Best,
