Who did you piss off?

[edit]

Hi! I reported your talk page vandal to AIV. We'll have to see what comes of it. But since the only edits your vandal has made are his vandalism to your page, I gotta wonder who really is pissed off at you? BTW, you are a real Wikipedian now, without a doubt. Once you've done enough to get someone to screw up your talk or user page, you have definitely arrived. Gtwfan52 (talk) 06:04, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I Guess I'm Floating inquiry

[edit]

How are references from New York Times, BBC, Wired Magazine, NY Daily News, Boston Phoenix, and Techcrunch not reliable enough? Please explain. The BBC literally wrote an article about the website and one of its concerts. NY Daily News commended the site, author called it his "personal favorite". Techcrunch called it a "tastemaker". Wired Magazine wrote an article about the blog starting a record label. How are these not reliable sources?

There's still a relatively large amount of objective reference material from several well known sources, including perhaps the most important, well known source of all: The New York Times.

If this isn't enough to demonstrate the site's notability, please explain why.

Rollback rights

[edit]

I have approved you for rollback. Just remember to warn users who vandalise or similar. You didn't warn the editor for this one. You can use the {{uw-delete1}} up to {{uw-delete4}} templates (remembering to substitute them so your message to them would appear like this:
{{subst:uw-delete1|List of police television dramas}} ~~~~
Alternatively you can use the twinkle warn-user feature. The "delete" templates are in the second drop down box. Kind regards, James086Talk 20:19, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Chess960

[edit]

This text edit, which you did not revert, is consistent with "retains more of the character of", which you did revert.

"Bad wording" (your edit summary) is a bit of a condemnation. The sentence either had correct content, or incorrect content. (There was nothing grammatically wrong with it.) Since your revert changed the content, you must have thought the content was incorrect. There was probably a reason the editor inserted word "helps". (I'm not sure if I agree with insertion of word "helps", but I can somewhat see the editor has a point: I think he/she did not like to imply that 100 percent of character of standard chess is retained in Chess960, which is true, actually.) But this is such a fine point ... IMO I don't think it matters too much. (But the other editor did, or, he/she wouldn't have made the change.) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 05:43, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I thought the restrictions on the randomization retain 100% of the character of standard chess. That's why I gave the ES "bad wording". However it's mentioned what restrictions are applied on the randomization of Chess960; so obviously it's understood that 100% of character of standard chess is not retained and there is no need of mentioning this twice. Forgot to put name 06:16, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just so I'm understanding, you took out "more of" because, thinking it was 100 percent, you felt "more of" was incorrect content? But now you've changed your mind (you think it is correct content, but, just unnecessary)? (Just trying to confirm my understanding what you're saying. I think I probably agree with you, if I'm understanding you correctly.) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 06:32, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you're understanding me correctly. Forgot to put name 06:58, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We agree then. (The other editor, who added "helps [retain]", might not though.) Ok, Ihardlythinkso (talk) 07:06, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Date format templates/categories

[edit]

Please don't place the {{Use mdy dates}} template or the Category:Use mdy dates from January 2013 category on articles on Indian subjects, as you did at Balaji Telefilms, Arjun (TV series), and possibly other articles. India uses DD-MM-YYYY, and according to our Manual of Style where an article's subject has strong ties to a particular English-speaking nation, the article should use that nation's variety of English and that nation's date format. —Psychonaut (talk) 11:49, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

But the articles in which I placed mdy templates/categories are in MONTHNAME/DD/YYYY format. What to do now? Forgot to put name 11:54, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The template/category is used for the benefit of bots which make automated changes to the articles. Just remove any "Use mdy dates" templates and categories from the articles you've added them to, and optionally replace them with the {{Use dmy dates}} template. (The template automatically adds the category, so there's no need to add the category manually.) Don't worry about any existing dates in the wrong format in the article; they'll probably get corrected eventually. —Psychonaut (talk) 12:01, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

N.A

[edit]

Your edit sum here is wrong. "N.A" does not mean "Not available". "NA" or "n/a" mean "not applicable". "Not available" and "not applicable" mean different things. And probably neither is appropriate for that table. Plus, I've never seen a table entry like you made, in any table, in any WP article before. (Have you?) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 20:02, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

N/A means not available too. Please see the definition in Wiktionary. Yes I accept that I have never seen that before. Thanks! Forgot to put name 04:20, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I see that. (I was checking The American Heritage Dictionary, Fourth Edition, where there's only the one definition, and not the Wiktionary. The fact there are so many defs for it at the Wiktionary (6!), makes the abbreviation that much more ambiguous -- which amounts to add'l reason not to use it in the table!) Ok, Ihardlythinkso (talk) 05:35, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What's with you?? Are you being intentionally dense? "Yes I accept that I have neveer seen that before. Thanks!" Your ambiguous abbreviation, isn't even consistent with any of the abbreviation forms at the Wiktionary. The abbreviation is ambiguous in the table. Are you trying to improve the article by adding unnecessary, ambiguous, unprecedented, and incorrect abbreviation? How does that make any sense? Why don't you find something better to do?? What you're doing is baiting and close to vandalism. You've already expressed distain for WP:BRD. Do you enjoy pissing other editors off?? Ihardlythinkso (talk) 07:02, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I am sending you this message in regards to your review of the Jason Dunn page I recently created. First off I would like to thank you for reviewing it. Now please note that I am new to creating and editing Wikipedia pages. I would like to know what you mean for me to do to change or edit the page. If you could let me know as soon as possible it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. --Drg1firedraco (talk) 03:06, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please replace some of the sources with reliable, published sources. There are many sources which are not reliable: ref no 3: that's a blog, Jesusfreakhideout (that's not very much reliable as per WP:RS.), Lyricsfreak (this too is not much reliable). Please see WP:RS too. Replace such sources with reliable, published sources: e.g a newspaper, magazines, etc. Make sure that you article doesn't violate the policy on biographies of living persons. Then also go through WP:MUSIC and make sure that your subject passes these criteria. Thank you for your submission! Forgot to put name 03:18, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Good change

[edit]

IMO that was a good editorial change. ("to rely instead on their talent ..." → "to rely on their talent ...".) But not because word "instead" caused confusion, rather because the word was unnecessary/implied. Ok, Ihardlythinkso (talk) 21:52, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

{{Help}} What is fancruft? I didn't understand WP:FAN properly. Please answer my question. Thank you. — Forgot to put name (talk) 17:37, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fancruft is basically information that is added by fans of something, which is also only useful to other fans. For example, a description of a plot of a game would not be fancruft, but a walkthrough or level guide would be. Likewise, a list of tour dates may be encyclopedic, but anything more than a simple list would likely be fancruft. gwickwiretalkedits 21:13, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Chess Variant Pages

[edit]

In this edit you removed content with source ChessVariants.com and left edit summary "removed claims of non-notable website [...]".

  1. You won't find a more athoritative source in the world regarding chess variants than Pritchard.
  2. Here is what Pritchard wrote about ChessVariants.com in Popular Chess Variants (2000), p. 142:

The Chess Variant Pages conducted by Hans Bodlaender is the most wide-ranging and authoritative web site on chess variants. A huge compilation of games, with rules, are listed alphabetically and on average an item a day is added to the site. There is much interesting material including a steady flow of new games, analysis and regular competitions. And just in case you still believe that chess variants only appeal to a small minority, roughly 150,000 'hits' a month are recorded.

Ihardlythinkso (talk) 19:16, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Also, please consider, the logical implication of the edit summary you used when removing the content: "removed claims of non-notable website [...]". That summary suggests you are thinking the source for the content claim, needs to be notable. But it doesn't. (There is no such requirement at Wikipedia. Sources, secondary or tertiary, are required to be "reliable" and "verifiable", but it isn't required or even suggested that they also be "notable". Think of the impossible burden that would result, if sources had to be demonstrably notable ... No one would be able to quote any source without being able to provide independent, reliable and verifiable sources on the source itself, in support of the first source's notability. If that were policy, then the burden on editors would be impossibly high. [Plus, what about the sources giving proof of the first source's notability? Would they need to be notable as well? That would lead to a logical loop and contradiction ... Any source given to demonstrate notability of another source, would also need sources demonstrating notability, and so on down the chain, until original sources were finally arrived at, which had no sources supporting their notability.])

Ihardlythinkso (talk) 04:27, 13 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, The Chess Variant Pages is even quoted in the lede at article Shogi. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 12:57, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Article Feedback Tool update

[edit]

Hey Forgot to put name. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Again, we're very sorry about this issue; hopefully it'll be smooth sailing after this :). If you have any questions, just drop them at the talkpage. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) 21:46, 1 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ashok Sundari

[edit]

Hello there. I'm here to discuss about the article Ashok Sundari. As you might know this character was portrayed in that tv series Devon Ke Dev...Mahadev. From there some people thought she really was Shiva's daughter. Actually she didn't exist in Hindu mythology at all. Work2Win added some sources recently to it. However they all were either opinions or unreliable. Also none of them were academic sources. Also the article was proposed for deletion and the result was delete. You too voted to delete it. But even after a year it hasn't been deleted why? MythoEditor (talk) 06:18, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Repost of Keymon Ache

[edit]

Information icon A tag has been placed on Keymon Ache requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia, because it appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion process. If you can indicate how it is different from the previously posted material, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's discussion directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Administrators will consider your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. If you believe the original discussion was unjustified, please contact the administrator who deleted the page or use deletion review instead of recreating the page. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant!
