MY COMMENTS are that this article does not appear to deal with UK by-elections held during the Second World War. Most of these were uncontested by coalition governement agreement, for example, the Nuneaton by-election held on 9 March 1942 which brought Frank Bowles into Parliament. But some by-elections were contested as result of intervention by radical independents. An example of such is the Maldon by-election held on 25 June 1942, which was won in proper contest by Tom Driberg as na Independent labopur candidate. In the following Genera Election of 1945 he integrated and won as a mainsteam Labour candiidtae.
