- Hello BuySomeApples,
- I have thoroughly read through the Wikipedia article for notability, and I believe that five of the 14 cited references meet the four criteria of being in-depth, reliable, secondary, and strictly independent sources. One citation is a press release which was published by an independent news organization - I will remove this one. The other references are supporting material, such as citations for government grant funding, professional society memberships, and a patent publication. These remaining citations all meet the bar for three of the four reference criteria, but are not in-depth. Should I remove these supporting citations as well?
- Many thanks,
- Flash FlashMechy (talk) 16:50, 19 July 2023 (UTC)

Paid editing
[edit]Hello FlashMechy. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.
Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.
Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:FlashMechy. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=FlashMechy|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}
. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. Theroadislong (talk) 09:31, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello Theroadislong,
- Thank you for your detailed message, and my apologies for my delayed response; I was not feeling well yesterday. I have thoroughly reviewed both the mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements and the conflict of interest pages, and believe myself to be a neutral party. I am not, nor have I been, paid or commissioned to work on this article, though I am genuinely interested in what this company is doing. I have a colleague who works at TCG Machines, but they are not an owner. It is my understanding of the COI guidelines that this does not present a conflict of interest, but if I am mistaken, then I will add a COI declaration.
- This is my first attempt at a Wikipedia article, so I do apologize if I have missed the mark in terms of neutral tone. If you could provide me with some specifics on which sections need to be changed or removed, that would be very much appreciated. I have done my best to emulate other business pages which have the "good article" status, such as the Tesla page. FlashMechy (talk) 16:39, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello again Theroadislong,
- Just touching base and hoping for an update.
- Thank you. FlashMechy (talk) 15:47, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Theroadislong,
- It's been over a month now since you asked that I not proceed with edits until answering your message. I took that to mean that I require your acknowledgement before continuing with edits or a resubmission. I would very much appreciate your feedback so that I know if I am clear to resubmit this article. FlashMechy (talk) 15:17, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
- Saw this in passing. I'll ping Theroadislong, but please explain what you mean by "I have a colleague who works at TCG Machines"- typically a colleague is someone who works with you, so if they work there but you don't, please explain. 331dot (talk) 15:20, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hello 331dot,
- Thank you for your response! I was beginning to feel like I was alone on the internet. My colleague and I shared a previous employer (not TCG Machines), so we have that social connection. They now work at TCG Machines, and I have been able to ask them for clarity as I have created this article. FlashMechy (talk) 15:29, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
- Okay, that would count as a conflict of interest; typically articles are written without any communication with the subject(or its representatives) or even the knowledge of the subject. That you are in communication with a company employee is something other editors should be aware of. 331dot (talk) 15:31, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
- My interpretation from Wikipedia's conflict of interest page was that I am at arms length. Specifically this passage:
- "Any external relationship—personal, religious, political, academic, legal, or financial (including holding a cryptocurrency)—can trigger a COI. How close the relationship needs to be before it becomes a concern on Wikipedia is governed by common sense."
- But I am fine with flagging myself as being a conflict of interest, as my situation can clearly be interpreted as such. I am new to Wiki, so please forgive my lack of process here. As I understand it, I need to place this:
{{connected contributor}}
at the top of the affected talk page, which would be the Talk Page for the article. I will attempt to do that now. FlashMechy (talk) 15:48, 5 December 2023 (UTC)- So on Wikipedia, the spirit of a rule matters more than the letter. Do you have the most serious conflict of interest? Probably not, but it's something that people should be aware of, for openness and transparency. Thanks. 331dot (talk) 15:50, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
- Totally, and happy to do right by the ideals of Wikipedia. Please excuse me as I struggle to get this template implemented.
- Thank you for your help! FlashMechy (talk) 15:52, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
- OK, I believe I got it. Thank you again for your time and help. FlashMechy (talk) 16:01, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
- So the notice you placed on this page is meant for article or draft talk pages, not user talk pages. WP:COI describes the format to use for a notice on your user page, User:FlashMechy. 331dot (talk) 16:10, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
- That's my bad, I think I have it correctly now (on my user page), but please let me know if I'm still off base.
- As for next steps, should I wait for Theroadislong to respond, or should I resubmit the article? FlashMechy (talk) 16:20, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
- I think you have satisfied the need for a response, so you may proceed with your editing. 331dot (talk) 16:41, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
- Wonderful, I'll resubmit this shortly. One last question for you: should I remove the "Undisclosed paid|date=November 2023" tag at the top of the article, or does that need to be a decision for a non-COI editor to make? FlashMechy (talk) 17:04, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hello 331dot, I'm just following-up to say that I am going to remove the "Undisclosed paid|date=November 2023" tag from the draft article, based on this Talk page thread. If this is something I should not do, please feel free to let me know or revert the change.
- Again, highly appreciative of your time and help. FlashMechy (talk) 19:41, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

- Hello Fermiboson,
- Thank you for taking the time to review my submission. Please appreciate that my latest, minor edit was not the only attempt I have made to write this article in a neutral manner. I can certainly do more, but I think we may just disagree on what is "fluff" and what is relevant information. The idea of an encyclopedia article (or more specifically, a Wikipedia article, in this case) is to present information on a topic. That said, I take your point, and I will try and cut down on extraneous information.
- Of note, the word "avid" does not appear in this article, so I am not sure what you are referring to there. The word "lifelong" is used, and I will remove it in my next edit. If you have any other specific criticisms, I would be happy to hear them so I can address them directly.
- Thanks again. FlashMechy (talk) 15:37, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hello again Fermiboson,
- I have gone through and done my best to trim out all extraneous information. Please let me know if this latest edit now reads in a more acceptable, neutral manner, and I will resubmit. Again, if you have any specific critiques, I am happy to implement them.
- Much obliged. FlashMechy (talk) 20:22, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Fermiboson,
- I will be resubmitting this article for review now, but I would still welcome any further insights you would like to provide.
- Have a good day. FlashMechy (talk) 14:31, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
