Barnstar
[edit]Yes! Anyone can give out barnstars. Though I consider myself a Barnstar giver because that is something I spend a lot of time on wikipedia doing, giving out Barnstars. But you can only give a barnstar to some one who has done something really good like made a lot of contributions, found a secret page or anything else good for more information check out this link WP:BARN. Hope I answered your question correctly. Swirlex 20:42, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
Congrats!

Userboxes and non-free images
[edit]Hi. I see you have quite a few non-free images in your userspace. Please be advised that Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. Wikipedia policy does not allow templates (which includes userboxes) or user pages to contain any copyrighted content not under a free license; so, for example, claims under "fair use" are explicitly rejected. This clause is to be interpreted strictly and without exception, for legal reasons. You can research Wikipedia's non-free content policy for more details.
Although I could remove them outright and without warning, I prefer to discuss straight and honestly so that you understand what's going on. I know it sucks, but it's policy. You should remove the images yourself and try to find free alternatives. I see that there are free images of The Office actors (Steve Carrell and Rainn Wilson), which you can use anyway you want, whether on your userpage or in userboxes.
I hope this does not discourage you from creating more userboxes; your contributions to Wikipedia are greatly appreciated. For other images and media that are freely available for use in userpages and userboxes, check out Wikimedia Commons. Thanks! - Mtmelendez (Talk|UB|Home) 03:22, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Well, thank you for being so diligent. I have removed and substituted the following images from your userpage with free images:

- Image:Rainn Wilson.jpg

Thanks for your openness. If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message at my talk page. - Mtmelendez (Talk) 00:49, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
Second reply
[edit]Of course. Technically, anything that is fair-use or under the fair-use license tag, is non-free content, and can only be used in articles if it meets certain criteria. When you click on an image and see its page, you may see that images with templates or tags that say fair-use image, are followed by a fair-use rationale. This is to evidence that the image is copyrighted, but you are not infringing on this copyrighted because... (fair-use rationale). But this only applies to articles. It cannot be used anywhere else, not even in Wikipedia space.
So just what is non-free? Well, easy-to-identify examples include music album covers, movie posters, movie screenshots, promotional photos, TV screenshots, news coverage, advertisements, company and artist logos, etc. But there are images which are copyrighted and are harder to identify, such as promotional photos, government photos, and paparazzi photos. An example includes a picture made by the U.S. federal government. Images made by the federal government are in the public domain and free to use, however this is an exception, because U.S. States hold copyright over their images, as do many other countries around the world. So if you see a government photo, you have to see which government made it, and this complicates things.
You can easily identify a free image if its uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, such as Image:Jimmy-wales-frankfurt2005-alih01.jpg. See the message that says This is a file from the Wikimedia Commons. The description on its description page there is shown below. Commons is a freely licensed media file repository.? This means that any image on Commons is free for you to use. Additionally, any image whose page has a license tag under GFDL, GNU, Creative Commons, or derivative licenses, or are released into the public domain are also free for you to use.
Unfortunately, many users who upload images don't include the required information, such as who made it, where did they get it from, what license is it under? If you see a page with this information missing, then it's wrong, and requires that a user edit it to include the information.
If you have any more questions, by all means let me know. - Mtmelendez (Talk) 03:07, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Of course!! That file is in Wikimedia Commons, which you can use freely for your userpage or your userboxes. - Mtmelendez (Talk) 23:40, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia.
While we appreciate that you enjoy using Wikipedia, please note that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not a social network. Wikipedia is not a place to socialize or do things that are not directly related to improving the encyclopedia, as you did at User:FT372SecretPage. Off-topic material may be deleted at any time. This message is not meant to discourage you from editing Wikipedia but rather to remind you that the ultimate goal of this website is to build an encyclopedia. And since there's no such user, I have tagged it with a {{db-nouser}} tag. --Calton | Talk 12:39, 17 November 2007 (UTC)
- Im sorry bout that, but is there any way I can get the stuff that was on that page back?
- You can ask the admin who deleted it [1], though I honestly don't see the point of these things. --Calton | Talk 01:46, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite
[edit]Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:08, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
