- I've only had time to read a small part of Dáibhí's awfully big book, but what I read I liked. It has broad coverage - archaeology, geography, history, language, literature, art, music, architecture... - so it doesn't go enormous depth on everything. It'll be good for getting me up to speed on all the stuff I know nothing at all about. All the best! Angus McLellan (Talk) 21:49, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
Irish people GA Sweeps Review: On Hold
[edit]As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria and I'm specifically going over all of the "Culture and Society" articles. I have reviewed Irish people and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. In reviewing the article, I have found there are multiple issues that need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I have left this message on your talk page since you have significantly edited the article (based on using this article history tool). Please consider helping address the several points that I listed on the talk page of the article, which shouldn't take too long to fix with the assistance of multiple editors. I have also left messages on the talk pages for other editors and a related WikiProject to spread the workload around some. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 04:09, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Hugh Roe O'Donnell
[edit]Hi Fergananim. You recently altered the page name for Hugh Roe O'Donnell to Hugh Roe Ó Donnell. Looking at your previous contributions, you obviously know what you are doing when it comes to Irish history and language. However, since this isn't the version of the name by which most people know O'Donnell (a google search for it only returns 5 results, as against thousands for "Hugh Roe O'Donnell"), I was wondering why you altered it? If it is because the gaelicised version of the name is the more historically 'correct' form (and I'd agree wholeheartedly there) then should the page not be moved to 'Aodh Rua Ó Domhnaill' rather than mixing the Irish 'Ó' with the anglicised 'Hugh Roe' and 'Donnell' as in the current hybrid version? Btw kudos for all your work on Ireland-related wikipedia pages, its mightily impressive. Also, I see Four Courts Press listed among the projects on your user page. I've recently started an article on it, mainly from material gleaned from the obituaries for Michael Adams. It would be great if you had any material to add to it, it's looking a bit sparse at the moment! ANB (talk) 18:40, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

If you are interested
[edit]I just rewrote the article on Donnchadh, Earl of Carrick. In the process of researching it, it became painfully obvious how little historians understand the activities of Donnchadh and other descendants of Fergus of Galloway in the north of Ireland. As you can see, I kept my the analysis of this part of Donnchadh's life to straightforward facts. I'm afraid there's nothing else that can be done. Steve Flanders' account of it in De Coucy is absolutely awful; the best is Sean Duffy and Richard Oram, but they only ever offer a few remarks. Alternatively, you can add the sort order to each category by having [[Category:People from County Galway|Burke, John]] instead of just the category. Does that help? Categories and catgeory diffusion
[edit]I have noticed that you have reinstated categories such as Category:Irish people in the article on Domnall ua Néill and others. I removed higher level categories because I had diffused these articles to appropriate sub-categories. In particular, the category:Irish people will become very cluttered if all people in Irish history are included. I beleive it to be a general principle within Wikipedia that articles should be appropriately diffused. Likewise category:6th-century Irish people in a sub-category of Category:Medieval Irish people and also of Category:6th-century people. Category:Medieval Irish people is a sub-category of Category:Irish people by time period which is a sub-category of Category:Irish people. If all the categories within a "category-tree" were included within an article then that is needless repetition and clutter within the article. I hope that you understand my point. My changes were not random but had been considered. If you want to discuss this further we can talk either on your talk page or mine. With regards to a fellow long-term wikipedian (I started in 2005). Jaraalbe (talk) 14:18, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the quick reply on User_talk:Jaraalbe#Irish categories. Jaraalbe (talk) 14:27, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
- Further to this could you read WP:Overcategorization before you apply any more categories. Your random application of categories is causing other users lots of work Kernel Saunters (talk) 11:40, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Sort order in categories
[edit]Please read WP:MCSTJR. As it spells out, sort keys in the English wikipedia should not contain accented characters; they cause articles to mis-sort. Your recent addition of accents to sort keys in many articles is a step backward and is creating redo work for other editors. Sort keys (the strings in DEFAULTSORT, categories, and the Lifetime template) are not displayed and merely control where in a category, relative to other article titles, the current article's title will be listed. They do not have any other visible effect; in particular, it is only the article title that is displayed. Studerby (talk) 18:56, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
Manual of style
[edit]FYI, you should take a look at the manual of style section on dates, WP:UNLINKDATES. This is a relatively recent change and there are plenty of older articles that use the older style with linked dates, but articles are systematically being converted to the new style.
