Welcome

[edit]

Hello, Fang Aili, and welcome to Wikipedia! Hope you like it here, and stick around.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Good luck! Renata3 18:21, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Renata3. Thanks for the welcome! :) Fang Aili 19:09, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Naming conventions

[edit]

As for the welcome, you're welcome :)

As for naming conventions, I have to tell you that I have no idea about Chinese names whatsoever... But I have an idea about Google :) So I did a search for "Shen Xue" and got 3750 results, while "Xue Shen" returns twice as much. Besides, Xue is the last name. And according to naming conventions it should go first. So I believe it should be as it is. But I am very happy that you explore, research, and ask questions!

What to do now - you could further consult some Chinese expert (because I am not) or create a redirect.

And for the future, if you want to rename an article, click "Move" tab next to "History" tab at the top of a page. Good luck and I'll be happy to answer your further questions! Renata3 19:33, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think Shen/Zhao are the last (family) names, but I am checking with a bunch of my Chinese friends to be sure. Thanks for the reply. :) Fang Aili 19:42, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I checked List_of_common_Chinese_surnames and it looks like Xue ranks 63 and Shen ranks 28... But Xue lists Xue Shen and says that's her last name... So I don't know. As I told you before, I am no Chinese expert. Renata3 13:04, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation

[edit]

I am glad you asked. I kwon taht Wiki help could be utterly confusing sometimes (I went through it myself). So here is step-by-step:

 1. Move existing Maria Petrova article to say Maria Petrova (gymnast). You move this page by filling this page: Special:Movepage/Maria_Petrova.
 2. Automatically Maria Petrova will be converted to a redirect to Maria Petrova (gymnast), so you'll have to edit the original Maria Petrova page. Remove redirect, create disambiguation page. It will have two links: to Maria Petrova (gymnast) and to Maria Petrova (skater). Also include code of disambig template.
 3. Create Maria Petrova (skater) article. And you are basically done.
 4. Extra step: if you want to be a really thorough Wikipedian you should click "what links here" on the original Maria Petrova article. You'll see that there are 6 pages (exluding your and mine talk pages) that have links to Maria Petrova. So know you should go to those pages and replace Maria Petrova with appropriate Maria Petrova or Maria Petrova links. But if it seems too much and utterly confusing, then it's ok. Forget and enjoy a sunny day :)

Note: those brackets (skater) and (gymnast) are necessary, but you can choose other words inside them if you find a better fit.

Hope it helps. Ask if you need some more help, I'll be glad to help you. Renata3 21:44, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome, that is very clear. Thanks. Fang Aili 22:47, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nicely done :) You even corrected the links! Renata3 03:16, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi - Are you the same person who posted this question at the help desk a little while ago? If so, can I assume you're no longer interested in trying to recover the other account? Thanks. -- Rick Block (talk) 01:59, August 15, 2005 (UTC)

Yup, that's me. I guess we'll let FangAili die, since it seems unlikely I could get it back, and I've already made a bunch of contributions with Fang Aili. Thanks for responding and trying to help. Fang Aili 03:56, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion

[edit]

Rather than tag misspelled articles for speedy deletion, you may wish to simply redirect them to the correctly spelled version. To do so, replace the article content with the following example code:

#REDIRECT ARTICLE NAME

Thanks, and happy editing! --Ryan Delaney talk 17:00, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Gotcha! Thanks. Fang Aili 17:04, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you want to delete JOOMLA! ???

[edit]

Hello Fang Aili,

sorry, but I don't understand why you want to delete Joomla!?

If you want to delete this new article about the Successor to Mambo_(CMS), you have to delete this article too: Mambo_(CMS) !!!

So there is no "misuse" of Wikipedia. Joomla! is an Open Source and community based project. Many former Mambo-Users announced to follow the Core Developer Team to Joomla!

I don't understand it.

It read like a corporate advertisement when I saw it, that's why. I've voted to keep it since it's been changed to a non-advertisement format. Fang Aili 14:12, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I noticed you'd AfD'd Camp-site. I looked at it and thought that a redirect to Campsite would be quicker and easier. Anyway, wanted to drop you a note in case you disagreed. If you do, feel free to put it back to the old version with VfD; I just figured a redirect was a quick and easy solution that (hopefully) everyone would think is OK. Friday (talk) 14:03, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That works. I wasn't sure if Camp-site was supposed to be about something other than a campsite.. but it probably is. Thanks. --Fang Aili 14:05, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It's entirely possible that it is, but it's hard to figure it out from reading the content that was there. Lately I've been redirecting a lot of cases like this, if there's an obvious target for the redirect. I know a lot of people don't like AfD, but with good application of redirects and speedies, my hope is that the number of articles under AfD becomes small enough that it's more managable. Friday (talk) 14:17, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats!

I just checked your edit count - and it says exactly 400! I hope to see one day 4000! ;) Renata3 02:31, 7 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Q Who?

[edit]

Hello,

Why did you move "Q Who?" to "Q Who? (TNG episode)"? It seems that you are disambiguating. Yet, according to Wikipedia:Disambiguation, there is no need to disambiguate as long as "there is no risk of confusion". Several TNG episodes are named with the episode title followed by "(TNG episode)" because another article could easily share the same page (e.g. "The Best of Both Worlds"). But in the case of "Q Who?" there is no risk. So why the move?

Cheers,

Acegikmo1 00:41, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at List of Star Trek episodes, every TNG episode has "(TNG episode)" after it. So I changed them to conform to that standard. --Fang Aili 01:46, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Also, that is the naming convention established by Wikipedia:WikiProject Star Trek. --Fang Aili 01:53, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Erica! Since you voted at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/One Of Us or One Of Them, the original editor has worked on the article a lot and brought it up to scratch. Just thought I'd let you know in case you wanted to revisit the article and review your vote. Regards, CLW 23:33, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up! I did a bit more research and commented on it at the AfD; I gotta stick with a delete vote, at least until an assertion of notability is made. Cheers! --Fang Aili 00:24, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Great Bosnian uprising

[edit]

Just to say in defense of MedoX, that material is not copyright, its actually original wikipedia text written by me for the Husein Gradascevic article. That website took the text from wikipedia without giving any credit to us. Live Forever 05:48, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info! I'll restore the section. --Fang Aili 14:47, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I'm not sure how to handle Great Bosnian uprising, since it is just copied from Husein Gradascevic. --Fang Aili 14:50, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

GREAT BOSNIAN UPRISING is name old as rebel itself, but it has not been used till recent dicoveries..

MEDOX AND GREAT BOSNIAN UPRISING

[edit]

Yes, I did copy that, but goal of that copying is to put Gradascevic beside, and gave more atention to Bosniaks that fight against great Ottoman Empire...

In next days, I'll add something, that will make GREAT BOSNIAN UPRISING differnt from part of GRADASCEVIC biography that conserns [i] Veliki bosanski ustanak [/i] or GREAT BOSNIAN UPRISING..

re template=>userbox

[edit]

No problem. I've gotta head out for a day or so. You'll notice from my userpage that there are also Judaism and Stargate wikiprojects that need to be converted as well. If you don't get to them before I get back, I'll try to muddle through doing it myself. Cheers, Tomertalk 23:56, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Esperanza!

[edit]

Welcome, Fang Aili/Archive1, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. Redwolf24 runs the spam to keep members up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of FireFox, Flcelloguy, Titoxd, and Karmafist. The next set of elections will be in February, and I would be glad to see you vote, or even consider running for a position.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Celestianpower by email or talk page or the Esperanza talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

State Userboxes

[edit]

Are state seals really restricted in terms of fair use? I really had no idea. Sorry. — Ian Manka Questions? Talk to me! 01:31, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Comment follow-up

[edit]

Heya. Sorry if my comment implied that I thought you were somehow opposed to useboxes*. That's not what I intended, although I realize now what I'd posted was vague. My intimation was that you'd notice I similarly use the same "may or may not be fair use"-tagged Virginia seal in a UVa alumni userbox I created, and I thought perhaps you'd edit it out, too. I wasn't being critical -- rather, I was just chagrined. I advise a high school newspaper, so we run into copyright issues all the time ;-) Re. USANG: give yourself a pat on the back for at least considering; many folks don't even get that far. There are many other ways to serve.

[edit]

Oh, don't get me wrong: I agree that it's right to err on the side of caution when it comes to copyrighted images, and I admire your dedication. But state seals are, to my knowledge, treated the same way as state flags (which are public domain). The problem (which I probably should have explained more clearly in my edit summary) is that the coatofarms tag is not specific enough, and is designed to be usable on both free and non-free images. – Seancdaug 04:04, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Ohio... here's an excerpt from the Ohio Revised Code, § 5.10.
The design of the great seal shall not be reproduced, except as required by any provision of the Ohio Constitution and the Revised Code, unless permission to do so is first obtained from the governor. The governor may authorize reproduction of the design of the great seal when the purpose is to:
(A) Permit publication of a reproduction of the great seal of the state of Ohio;
(B) Aid educational or historical programs;
(C) Promote the economic or cultural development of the state in a manner deemed appropriate by the governor.
A permanent record shall be kept in the governor's office of each permit to reproduce the design of the great seal.
No person shall use or permit to be used any reproduction or facsimile of the great seal or a counterfeit or nonofficial version of the great seal for any purpose not authorized by the governor."
I take it that we can't use the state seal of Ohio in userboxes, then? Well, no, except if we get the governor's permission, right? — Ian Manka Questions? Talk to me! 05:33, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, the plot thickens, then. I know, for instance, that the Maryland state seal is public domain (see Talk:List of counties in Maryland). I hadn't realized that the situation was different in other states. My apologies. – Seancdaug 05:42, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The way I read coatofarms is, "if this image can be user on Wikipedia at all, then it is to be used as a fair use image". --Fang Aili 15:53, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think that's a valid reading, honestly. Allow me to quote from the actual template:
This image may or may not be usable in Wikipedia. It may be ineligible for copyright, in the public domain, or available under a free licence. In other cases, it is believed that these images may be exhibited on Wikipedia under the fair use provision of United States copyright law. If this is the case, please add the appropriate copyright tag.
The way this is written implies that it is assumed that the image is either "ineligible for copyright, in the public domain, or available under a free licence" unless an "appropriate copyright tag" specifying otherwise is present as well. It also bears noting that several of these images were previously tagged with PD, and that this tag was subsequently replaced with coatofarms without specifying any copyright restrictions. – Seancdaug 18:21, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm more confused than ever. I'm not going to do any more image stuff until someone can explain it in plain English. Thanks for your attempt, though. --Fang Aili 18:26, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Heh. It's not a very well-written template, to be sure: it's one of those things that needs to be broken down grammatically. Ignoring the first sentence I quoted, which doesn't say anything particularly useful ("may or may not be usable" applies to basically every image in the world), the second sentence says that the image might not be protected by copyright. The next sentence says that if the image is protected by copyright, then it might qualify for fair use. The last sentence says that if it is eligible for fair use, the image should also include a valid fair use tag. That's the important bit, because it says that if the image isn't "free," there needs to be a second tag (such as logo) to clarify. Otherwise, the image should be treated as public domain. Is this any more clear? If not, it might be worth taking this up at Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags: ambiguity regarding issues as serious as copyright law is not good, and the tag might need to be rewritten. – Seancdaug 20:34, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm.. that is a bit clearer. Thanks for trying again. :) It seems like we're assuming the best case scenario though (that we can use the image as we wish), when actually it could be anywhere between "not useable at all" and "do whatever you want" (I might be interpreting this wrong again, though). I definitely think the tag needs to be rewritten; it reads like a big circle. Then again, copyright issues are legalese and therefore esoteric. --Fang Aili 20:43, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm actually beginning to wonder if the tag serves any real purpose at all: it's really not a copyright tag, as it doesn't specify copyright status. I think I'll go ahead and broach the subject at the aforementioned talk page and see what others think about it. In the meantime, I'll tag the only state seal I'm sure is in the public domain with an additional PD tag, just to be safe. – Seancdaug 21:36, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. I'll probably stay away from the subject for the time being; it makes my head spin. --Fang Aili 21:46, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I can't say I blame you. In any case, I would like to thank you for bringing it up: as evidenced above, I was wrong in assuming that all state seals were in the public domain, and this was certainly a discussion worth having, even with all the head spinning. Thanks! – Seancdaug 04:10, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you...

The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: EA-welcome (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

...but I am not really stressed. I am just enraged about 20% of the time due to a mild case of borderline personality disorder, not that I believe that that is a real mental deficency. You stress out about online stuff too? Sometimes when idiots abuse my patience and good will too much I feel the urge to go and find out where they live, travel there, wait until they are harassing someone else online and then walk into their room, and lop their heads off with an axe. Uh... yeah... that wasn't scary or weird. So, anyway, I get rid of all my pent up rage with boxing. Great sport. Keeps you in really good shape too. You should check it out if dancing, etc. isn't keeping you too busy in your spare time. There are plenty of young ladies in my boxing class and they all seem to dig it. No worries, you won't have to fight guys! Anyhoo, don't let the trolls and vandals get to you.

Thanks for your note about the Oberg stub. Yes, the article is similar (and based) on text from the link you mentioned. So, I've added that page now as an external link, plus another similar bio, and the 1974 American Anthropologist obiturary. In so doing, I've expanded the stub so its more like an amalgam of the sources, but I've found the three refs to be very similar - I suspect the two more recent ones are derived themsleves from the 1974 obiturary. Would appreciate it you could take a quick look and help to ensure WP protocol have been followed here and let me know any suggestions. Thanks for your help. Moving ahead with the RfC

[edit]

Clicky. This needs to go forward now before the issue grows stale; I just hope it's enough. It can still be improved while on the RfC page. Rogue 9 16:14, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

little help?

[edit]

Hey, I noticed you left a message in reply to User:PistolPower's wikistress level a while back. I've been trying to help this user acclimate to Wikipedia, and though he's too new still to join Esperanza, I hoped we could bring a bit of Esperanza to him by helping him keep out of trouble :x

He's currently blocked for persistent, highly uncivil conflicts with other editors. He's made a great deal of progress though, and I was hoping you could drop him a note to back up my explanation of why his current path isn't going to work out for him. It'd be nice if he didn't leap right into fighting once his block expires, and a second opinion might help him with that.

Thanks. Please drop me a msg if you'd like to know more :) Adrian~enwiki (talk) 21:44, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much! :) Adrian~enwiki (talk) 23:34, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And thanks as well for the housekeeping on my article :)

Another Esperanzial note...

[edit]

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,
