How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Happy

Meant to leave you a note sometime early, but I've been fairly disengaged the last 6-8 months or so because of real life things, but very happy to see your name around more. Easily one of the best old-timers we have TonyBallioni (talk) 23:48, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

Thanks, good to see you back around too. Have flicked you an email. Bishonen also called me old, a little while back. I prefer "spry." -- Euryalus (talk) 00:14, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
Wishing you the best of luck with your studies! Hopefully we see you around --TheSandDoctor Talk 08:21, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

Desroches Noblecourt

I'm back from a library where I could read Mrs Desroches Noblecourt's last book, hoping, since the title is Le secret des découvertes (The secret of discoveries), that she would speak of her outstanding insight, a real breakthrough, about the Ten Commandments, saying that they refer to the time of pyramids. But no; the only place where she gave that formidable information was that interview to Le Figaro magazine. The reference to Le Figaro magazine has been accepted by wikipedia France and Italy. It was rejected by wikipedia English and German. This is appalling; an encyclopedia cannot reject an interview of such an Egyptologist as Desroches Noblecourt on the motive that Le Figaro magazine would not be reliable. That argument can only be presented by hypocrite Zionists. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.175.32.124 (talk) 21:53, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

Correction to previous election announcement

Just a quick correction to the prior message about the 2022 MILHIST coordinator election! I (Hog Farm) didn't proofread the message well enough and left out a link to the election page itself in this message. The voting will occur here; sorry about the need for a second message and the inadvertent omission from the prior one. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 17:41, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

Simple English Wikipedia

Do you have an account on the Simple English Wikipedia? 24.178.76.27 (talk) 21:35, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

Yes, though I don't use it much. Why? -- Euryalus (talk) 07:40, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
A show called Juanito Jones has a page on Simple English, but not on regular Wikipedia. Could you try and make one? 24.178.76.27 (talk) 20:42, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestion but it's not a topic I'm especially familiar with. I'm also not here much lately, for real life reasons.
Have you considered creating the article yourself? Looking at the Simple Wikipedia version, it desperately needs some references and an indication of notability (eg what critical reviews has this show received, and what are its audience figures anywhere?). If these references and reviews exist, then creating an en-WP version should hopefully be straightforward. -- Euryalus (talk) 03:04, 23 September 2022 (UTC)

An IP editor to look at

Given your good block at [1] and the fact you looked into it, it may make sense for you to evaluate/pay attention to 12.69.229.90 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log), given their overlap. "Mackay"

Hi Euryalus. In HMS Weazel (1745) - nice article - you cite several times to "Mackay" (or MacKay) but don't give details of the source. I am working on Second Battle of Cape Finisterre which Weasel was at and Mackay may contain useful information. Any chance that you could share the details of the source? Thanks. Gog the Mild (talk) 21:28, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

@Gog the Mild:, thanks for the message. An unfortunate oversight not to include the actual reference! I'll go see if I can find the book again. -- Euryalus (talk) 21:40, 19 November 2022 (UTC)
@Gog the Mild: pretty sure it's this: Mackay, Ruddock F. (1965). Admiral Hawke. Oxford, United Kingdom: Clarendon Press. OCLC 463252609. I don't have the actual book in front of me but was using this as a reference for related articles at the time, and the author, year and topic all fit. Hope that helps. -- Euryalus (talk) 21:47, 19 November 2022 (UTC)
(edit conflict) No, no. I have always understood the actual sources to be entirely optional. Many thanks. Gog the Mild (talk) 21:49, 19 November 2022 (UTC)
Ah, excellent. Thank you. Gog the Mild (talk) 21:50, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

good to see

youre still afloat, and not just treading water = the warren and brown afd is inneresting - you are right, but, there was at least one book on trove... JarrahTree 11:18, 23 November 2022 (UTC)

@JarrahTree: Hi! Hope you're going well away down there in the wilds. I've missed you all. Re Warren and Brown, do you mean there's actual reliable sources for this company? I'm surprised. Mystifying then that it has been written the way it has. -- Euryalus (talk) 11:21, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
I suspect that a very eager beaver could save it, but I have not the stamina to dig, it is clearly notable but if it is a copyvio as well, well may whoever sail it well, with or without guy ropes or lanyards to haul in the deep demersal bits... JarrahTree 11:29, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
But nothing compared to the issues that arise at Modisi - as intriguing as the election in Victoria... or the visa complexity for entering and leaving India these days, but dont let me start... JarrahTree 11:39, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
moved the refs to the talk - just in case someone removes the copyvio bits.. JarrahTree 12:07, 23 November 2022 (UTC)

G'day

G'day Euryalus, hope you are having a great break and had a good Xmas. I noticed that you are a member of WP Australian politics, and wanted to share that I am on a bit of a mission to improve bio articles on SA pollies who served, as a bit of a break from Yugoslav WWII topics. I recently improved Ernest Roberts (Australian politician) (who served two tours in the Second Boer War) to GA, which is currently at MH ACR, and have Jack Critchley at GAN. Even though I've got a couple of pollies to FA in the past (Bill Denny and Arthur Blackburn, I'm not sure how much interest there will be in some of these other guys from MH members as in some cases their military service is incidental rather than the basis of their notability. I'd appreciate it if you would consider taking a look at any that pique your interest when they appear for review. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 19:00, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
