I've had an idea brewing for some time now with regards to the infobox, and would like some feedback before I take it any further. Given your recent work with MOS:FILM, I thought I'd ask you! :)

• I thought it might look better (and be a more economical use of infobox space) if we did it like this. This would of course require multiple new parameters to be added to the infobox, but it would allow the template to do all the formatting, rather than leaving it to the user.

Thanks for the kind words! :) I think the biggest problem will be long names which as it stands will wrap onto a second line, though of course this is the case with the infobox at present. Re: Orphaned non-free media Image:X-Files I Want to Believe screenshot.png. I can't find anything that supports your caption qualification position. This appears to be a personal interpretation of yours and possibly other editors, why is okay, but can be challenged. The article Wikipedia:Captions makes no mention of copyright issues and the word "caption" does not appear in these articles: Wikipedia:Non-free content, Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria, Wikipedia:WikiProject Fair use, Fair use, Wikipedia:Copyrights, Wikipedia:FAQ/Copyright, Copyright infringement, Wikipedia:Copyright violations, Wikipedia:Suspected copyright violations, Wikipedia:Spotting possible copyright violations, Wikipedia:Copyright problems, Wikipedia:Image use policy. Again, no mention of the word "caption" in any of those relevant articles. Since you are the editor who keeps removing the image, why don't you write a caption that meets your caption qualification needs. I put an urgent request on Talk:The X-Files: I Want to Believe but nobody seems capable and I have not seen the movie yet and may wait until it comes out on Blu-Ray. Thanks for your reply over on my talk page (I may eventually clear the topic and relegate it to the history log). I think I can argue further your points, like How does a picture of the characters signify their understanding of the topic? Answer: the characters haven't been seen onscreen for many years and the screenshot shows them aged, not young from the TV series, which helps readers who have seen neither to understand the current film being discussed in the article. Anyway, the problem here really is that I haven't seen the film so I can't fix the caption and since you won't, I'll have to let the image expire from the server. Discussion

Hi Erik its not about the templates. I don't mind whether they are replaced with see also sections or not and I always appreciate a consensus between the group. What I have become tired with is everything I join in a project discussion I am told by Giro what I should say or that despite me creating a whole batch of templates or articles it has nothing to do with me. It does concern me but it also concerns the group and the general community. This has happened on many occasions to the point I no longer want to be a part of the group. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ ^$1,000,000? 14:37, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Its not that I don't respect Giro for his contributions to WP:Films and what he has done to organize it and tag articles, what I find frustrating is that at times he appears to believe his position entails moral coordination and telling other editors what they should say or do. Sure he might believe individual contributions to the project or edit count is not important, I have abolsutely no problem if he thinks this. What concerns me though is that I really don't think it is his place to prompt people like that and indicates that he has a degree of superiority in values. All I said in the current discussion was that I'm sorry nobody could see what the templates were intended for in that they were intended to connect to the years in film (which a see also section also can I agree). Perhaps using the word "appreciate" mislead him and wasn't a tactful word to use. However he jumped in again (as he has done in numerous places elsehwere on wikipedia and in some of the taskforce discussions) and said this isn't about me and being grateful for all my contributions etc etc. I absolutely said nothing at all about my contributions or "what I have done" nor did I explicitly state that I "owned" the templates or that a consensus or project discussion wasn't a good thing. Howver he has made it look like I was trying to justify something based on my overal contributions to the project which is totally not what I was saying. Rather it was me (and Lugnuts) who distributed the vast majority of these templates which we are talking about so "I" have some degree of responsibility for them whether they are public property or not. I fully agree it should be WP:Films having a responsibility for them rather than "myself" but as I was the one who distributed then the discussion does partly involve me whether they are WP:Films group material or not. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ ^$1,000,000? 15:04, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Fountain image

I'm confused I don't understand your edit summary for removing Image:Fountain conquistador.jpg from The Fountain:

"The image does not have any explicit commentary in the article about Tomas being carried."

Thanks The article currently includes the following passage:

"[A]s Tomas approaches the pyramid atop which the tree grows, Mayan warriors attack the conquistadors. Tomas's last two men are killed fleeing the battle. Tomas is spared by the warriors, who force him to climb the pyramid..."

Plot and analysis As always, I appreciate your input, but I'm still lost here: how is this picture not descriptive? Since the plot includes a bunch of Mayans attacking him and the picture depicts Mayans attacking him, I don't see how this is inappropriate. I'm sorry if this is pedantic, but I don't see what I'm missing here. You mention how the article explicitly mentions flowers bursting from his body, so a picture of flowers bursting from his body is acceptable, but the article also mentions him being attacked by Mayans, so why is this one not acceptable? Would the article have to state that he was carried by them and only then could the picture be included? Portal:Film

Hello, I was wondering how to update the image that I see so frequently with Portal:Film. There is a consensus at WT:FILM to replace Image:Film reel.svg with Image:Video-x-generic.svg. Does this have to be done manually? —Erik (talk • contrib) - 14:56, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

2009 Sundance Film Festival

My film premiere

It was splendid. Basically the seven-minute documentary is about my parents' struggle to raise a family of 10 kids (me being the youngest). It was somewhat of a comedy-drama. There were eight other short films there that were decent. Press showed up for a Q&A session afterwards. I'll have to look up local papers for that one.

That documentary took a lot of energy out of me. I shot over 3.5 hours of footage and I narrowed it down to seven minutes. Basically I go back to High School in a couple of weeks. I need to focus on getting my grades back up. At least I don't have to carry a job anymore, so I'll have more time watching films, making films (I now want to focus on claymation), getting decent grades. —Wildroot (talk) 17:43, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

WP:ENGVAR suggestion

There's a discussion at Talk:King Kong (2005 film) that suggests we should take in a film's story into account when deciding how to spell in the article. I'm inclined to think you're right about the category. Assigning genres to a film can be a subjective buisness, which is problematic when it comes to categorization. I know a lot of "Films about..." categories have been deleted in the past. PC78 (talk) 18:39, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

I just watched this, and the unrated version was quite interesting. I didn't see it in theaters as I figured it to be a remake of "Escape from L.A./New York". However, after reading the production section, it looks like that was the point. Anyway, I'm not sure if you've already contemplated this or not, but should Category:Cannibal films be added to this article? I looked at the article concerning the film genre, and it looks like it only discusses films that take place in the jungle where cannibalism occurs, and where it is the main focus of the film. In this case do you think the human barbecue scene (I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. Yeah I miss the film image and was surprised one day when somebody just deleted it. Okay, I'll upload the pageant image later today (I'm about to leave for class and then have a screening for Hell Ride to go to). If possible could you copy/email me the article so I can read the whole thing? For some reason my university databases can't locate it and Google searches only let me read the opening paragraph. If I upload an image of them all sitting in a bus, I can also comment on the use of several different buses to properly film the the cast in the bus as described in the article. Yeah, I realized it had the watermark, I just linked to that image since it was the first one I could quickly find. It must be a production still since I saw it on about 10 sites after searching for screenshots. MOSFILM and cast section

I've been keeping an eye on the IndianCaverns edits when Clarityfiend brought it to my attention, and I noticed that he's been using the Tenebrae example in the guidelines to delete cast sections en masse and solely provide the information via parentheticals within the plot section. I haven't gone around to do a comprehensive survey, but I can't seem to remember any other film FAs which don't have a cast section, so perhaps we should look into formalizing this into the guidelines as a required section? Especially as we have a template parameter to request this, it seems a logical conclusion, and furthermore it's the kind of change which shouldn't entail any overwhelming amount of burdensome re-editing or addition of new sourced material. (Whether or not parenthetical credits should also appear within the plot summary is another matter.) Thoughts? Girolamo Savonarola (talk) 11:36, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Halloween (1978 film), Halloween II, Halloween III, and Jaws (film), are the first four that immediately come to mind. Gremlins and Gremlins 2 seem like clear cases to cut the cast section out, as it's literally just a list. I know that I plan on using the "Casting" subsection, over the "Cast and characters section" for the Friday the 13th articles I've been working on. I certainly don't use it in the television episode pages that I write.

In my opinion, most cast sections are just useless in-universe fodder, or, at least, breeding houses for that even when there is real world information present. Everyone is always trying to say "this character did this in the film", or "this character is so-n-so's bff". Stuff that can be easily seen in the plot section. I much prefer a "Casting" section to a list, as your real info can be found there, while IMDb can keep the comprehensive "List" of the cast.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 11:46, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

The MOS covers two of those styles already. Having a generic "list" is what IMDb is for, IMO. It provides no real value to the article, as the principle characters are already listed in the lead paragraphs. Having a generic list just opens the door to having anyone seen in the film listed as part of the "Cast". At least by requiring some real world information in the list you can weed out people that were obviously not important enough to get noted in the real world.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 16:05, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

I think we should suggest that subjective interpretations of overall critical review, or even POV wording (like "overwhelming" and "mostly") be stricken from articles. Personally, I prefer the basic "let the statistics speak for themselvse", like we have at Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. I would also be ok with saying "received positive review" if it's clearly one-sided, or negative if it's that way. But the POV choices of just how positive or negative, or when the film is sitting in the middle, should go.

We should probably expand the subsection on the LEAD to be a bit more detailed about what should be included, and how. Right now it only talks about two paragraphs of info, and it glosses over that as is.

I don't think we ever finished covering what "preceded by" and "followed by" actually constitutes. Maybe we should cover that here, since this is the MOS page.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 16:32, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm trying to work on these Smallville pages and get them all done. It's sloooow. Another editor and I were trying to find reviews for season two's finale "Exodus", but there is none. It appears that season two won't have any individual episode articles from what I can tell. I would say remove the whole bit on spoilers altogether. As consensus may change (unlikely in this case, but still), leaving the page out-of-date until someone notices, I'd simply place one sentence at the end reading: "For guidance on the use of "spoiler" tags, please see WP:SPOILER." Or at the very most a direct instruction not to use spoiler tags, coupled with a link to the guideline. I think we also need to clarify the guidance on the length of the plot section. WIth the current wording, we might as well say, "400 to 700... oh, but sometimes 900... maybe more if you need 'em." The line on actors' names in parentheses needs tweaking too, to bring it more into line with the guidance in the "Cast and crew" section: I don't think there's a need for linkage if there's a cast list or casting section. And as for specific guidance on writing a plot section... that's a tough one. In the same way that good paraphrasing is a skill that is picked up over time, so is writing Wikipedia-specific plot sections that avoid any hint of interpretation and all the other stuff we rail against. It might be better to pare down the first paragraph of your work-in-progress rewrite in favour of something a little more direct, with a permalink to good example. Or at least paraphrase the quoted policy to be a little more succinct. Steve ^{T • C} 20:05, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. I think the "Exodus" bit will be good for production info, but as far as splitting it off I think it won't help. That was a harsh review of "Justice" by that one writer...lol. I liked that episode, in all its cheesiness. So, The Descent it is. I'll see what I can find on the DVD when I get a chance. Hi Erik. I just got home from vacationing in beautiful southern Maine with my my family. It was great! How are things going with you? Did you watch the Opening Ceremonies for the Olympics in Beijing? I did, and was in complete awe. It was the best opening ceremony for the Olympics I've ever seen! I was so amazed as how all those performers were able to memorize every move. Scope of the project?

Does an article like Gurren Lagann fall within the scope of WP:FILM? I wasn't sure whether or not to remove the banner from the talk page. I removed Flash in other media from the project earlier on, but again, I'm not sure if this was correct or not. PC78 (talk) 16:02, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Jay and Seth

I found earlier mentions... found surprise and pleasure about the trailer when it first came out... and included some examples in my verylatest response at the AfD... but these are not as important as the effect the trailer has had since it went online. That is its notability... the reactions after it was posted... with folks calling for a film almost immediately. I defended my position at the AfD out of respect for your help in this... but its gonna die. And that ain't CRYSTAL. I do understand the naming conventions, but feel that in this specific instance, PC78's placing the article about the trailer over the deleted article about a future film may have been perceived as an affront. • Well... we're supposed to be bold... yes? I did some last tweaking and sourcing to my sandbox article and moved the whole kit and kaboodle to the Seth and Jay article's page. I just left a note at the AfD asking the delete voters compare the 1st AfD with what originally went in to the 2nd Afd to what nows fills that page. With the change in direction for the article, it just ain't the same one that was being voted against. It may yet be deleted, but I know I did my best in the face of tough odds and I feel good about myself and my work there. If it gets deleted now, I'll ask for a review. Ye Olde Times

Hello! I created the page for Ye Olde Times because it is in fact going to be filmed. I work at the Michigan Renaissance Festival in Holly, Michigan, which is where the majority of the filming will take place. The production staff is being very quiet about everything, but we were informed that filming will begin around the same time our festival opens, which is this weekend (August 16 and 17 2008). I'm not entirely sure why more information about this film isn't available yet, and I know there has been a lot of speculation about it in the past, but I can assure you that it is really happening this time. I don't know how much they'll be able to tell you, but if you'd like proof you could always call or email the festival office. Their contact info can be found on their website. Yeah, I never figured my first FA attempt would be that article, but it was already in somewhat good shape and I've invested a lot of time in it. I plan to start the FAC after my class ends, so it'll be interesting to see how it goes. Although the film's craziness is entertaining, it is quite hectic for the vandalism (along with Ben Stiller's page). I definitely plan to bring it up to GA, but it will definitely be a few weeks after the film's release as I'm sure this article will be edited consistently for a while when it's in theaters. I've had a quick look at this article myself. At the end of the day, I think it's important to remember that WP:NFF does not trump WP:N. It's my favorite comedy of the year besides Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Pineapple Express. Guru of Sex - update

Just in case you were interested, at this point in time it appears that the result of the "Merge" (LOL) decision from Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Guru of Sex is that there is zero mention of any content of that article in the merged article "Osho" whatsoever [3]. I know I brought this up before, but this time my point from the AfD is made clearer because all content from the article is completely gone. Again, no worries, I still respect your perspective from the AfD and it is possible at some point that there will be further developments in the film or coverage in additional sources, but it is interesting to note the end development from the AfD was actually not "merge", which is quite unfortunate, IMO. Hey, how's it going? Congrats on The Dark Knight. You guys will definitely need to take that to A-class review pretty soon (unless you guys are waiting on the DVD for some more info). I had a question concerning uploading an image for the Tropic Thunder article. There is a section discussing Tom Cruise's leaked appearance, and I was thinking of uploading the image to illustrate this in that section. A copy of the image can be seen here if you haven't seen it already. Would you think this to be acceptable to upload, and if so, which license would I use? I'm thinking the one found on Image:Zodiacfx.jpg, but am wondering if you know of a better one. Ah, that list of links shouldn't take you more than a few minutes to incorporate into the article. I just wished my film article would have done even better at the box office (I think they should have released it earlier when the buzz was much higher). For the image, I think the paparazzi image would be a better representation as it was the image itself that set off the entire controversy over Cruise's role. In addition, I don't know of anywhere where I could find him fully dressed up as his character, except until maybe a screenshot from the DVD release. Oh, I could waste a thousand words on my problems with the pilot. But to cut to the chase, the script was abominable. The pilot started out quite well, with that genuinely creepy scene aboard the plane, and some nice make-up effects, but everything after that was a heinous insult upon the viewer not seen since Akiva Goldsman's The Da Vinci Code script. Unlike others, it doesn't particularly bother me that Fringe is basically The X-Files; I enjoyed that and wouldn't mind watching it again. But where a show like The Middleman's reliance on overfamiliar concepts works in its favour, giving over only as much time as is strictly necessary to explain the setup so it can pack the remaining time with delicious gags and irrelevant, knowing asides ("that was given to me by my father, who died in mysterious and as-yet-unexplained circumstances!"), Fringe wastes the opportunity to play off audience expectation and pre-existing knowledge and instead opts to… explain things at least twice, just in case you didn't catch it the first time. Seriously, I wasn't worried about missing a line of exposition, because someone was more than likely to repeat the point straight afterwards, in even more condescending language:

"His skin, it's translucent."
"You mean, his skin is see-through?"
"Yes."

That isn't even the worst exchange in the show. The whole thing is filled with clichéd, ludicrous, expository language that only serves to show how contemptuous of the audience Orci and Kurtzman and Abrams really are. The characters are all broadly-drawn stereotypes, their interactions and conflicts laboriously explained to the viewer one step short turning to the camera and literally spelling it out ("He’s pissed at me because his best friend sexually assaulted three marine privates and I’m the one who put him away”), not one of them acts in a consistent manner—character traits are conveniently put aside whenever the plot, which makes no sense and is full of holes you could fly Oceanic 815 through, requires it. Like Lost at its worst, scenes come across as if they can't be bothered even writing them, so eager are they instead to skip to the next scene of ham-fisted mythopoeia. They think we won't notice this crap, and what's even more galling is that they're right; this'll end up a big, fat hit. Re: Assistance

Yeah, I've picked up after the summer, and so has Hollywood (how many articles say something was announced in September 2008 now?). I finally polished Star Trek with all these news articles I previously ignored and I am becoming more of a Trekker. Can't wait to get all these DVDs over winter like Hulk, Indy, WALL-E, Narnia, Batman, Iron Man, and Bond (I didn't buy Casino Royale on DVD last year as I smelt something wrong when the first edition didn't have a commentary on it) and to refresh on Trek and Terminator for 2009. I meant the film, because I know you weren't a big fan of it. Scenes with Anthony Anderson and Turturro really ruined some peoples' memory of wonderful scenes like Optimus' second monologue and Bumblebee's capture. Bay, like any filmmaker, wants his audience to believe in his world, but his humour is so adolescent. Works sometimes (Frenzy, any Steve Buscemi character) though. >:| Still, hopefully the only spilt liquid in the sequel will be the robotic equivalent of blood, not urine. Error; please correct

Hi. I notice you stated at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Films#Linking to "year in film" in film-related articles: "John, I would caution against mass edits like this. It is not like overlinking is a grave threat to Wikipedia, so I think it is best to build consensus before embarking on a series of edits like these."

Could you explain what you mean by "mass edits" and "a series of edits like these" please? In the case of Marlene Dietrich, I removed two deprecated easter eggs from the article, and Ed then undid my removal and added 99 (I'm not kidding), which I reverted and then brought to talk. If you do take it upon yourself to criticize another user, it's always worth just checking that you have your facts right. I think adding 99 is more like a mass edit than removing two, don't you?

You may very well not regard overlinking as a grave threat to Wikipedia, and neither do I, but I do support the advice in Wikipedia:Only make links that are relevant to the context and intend to continue to remove superfluous links wherever I see them. I do not need a specific mandate to remove them; our principles dictate that instead those wishing to retain the links need to show consensus to addd them. Re: Changeling

Thanks for the Changeling back slap and advice. I'm looking at the reception section right now, as it happens. I wrote that before using the format I now prefer and it could certainly do with updating to reflect some of the post-Cannes reviews. It could do with a good copy-edit too. And the just-released production notes are solid gold in terms of encyclopedic content (any idea how I can cite them? At the moment, they're only available from here, and the flash interface makes it impossible to determine a direct download link). I haven't really picked an article to focus on after that. Obviously, State of Play is still to hit, but before then I might have a look at what I can do with Frost/Nixon, or spend some time updating WP:FUTFILM. Really, your comment about bringing Fight Club "up to par" made me smile. Barring whatever minor manual of style nitpicks would need addressing, the article would likely sail through a FAC. The Human Factor (2009 film)

Hi there. I declined the speedy, because in my view the recreation was not "substantially identical to the deleted version", as required by G4. Yeah, it covers the same topic, but the actual wording and content are quite different; they're pretty obviously both independent, good-faith attempts to create the article. Therefore, I interpret the G4 not to be valid in this circumstance.

G.I. Joe advice

As mentioned in all the script reviews of the film taken down by Paramount, Cobra Commander starts out as a friend of Duke, an idea which goes far back to drafts of the project in 2005. As it was taken down, this is unverifiable, but, in a Variety article published before Levitt was announced as the evil overlord, it states "Gordon-Levitt will play Duke Hauser's best friend. Star Wars / E.T.

I know it's in print from the time the film came out, but I don't feel like digging through my archives at the moment, and the only online references I can find are blogs. It's really not that important, but the attitude of Ward-something has raised my hackles a bit. Meanwhile, he's not arguing that it's trivial, because if he did, that might be a different story. I might argue that it's not trivial, at least not if the subject is George Lucas, because George is in the habit of putting these little easter eggs or cross-references in many of his films - kind of his own way of being Alfred Hitchcock. Trying to make sure I go to all of mine. I have a couple where attendance isn't crucial, but I still try to go. A lot of the information I learn is slightly redundant to what I learned in undergrade, but sometimes I find useful things that I didn't know before. My main problem is that I have one class where role-playing is an everyday thing, and I generally don't have the stomach to pretend that often. It gets old, real fast. Though I like the professor, I just don't enjoy the method. I won't have to worry about job hunting for at least another six months (yay for me). Fortunately, (or unfortunately depending on how you look at it), I'll also be in the D.C. area. Unless things change, my g/f already has a job with a government contractor located in the D.C./Arlington area (SAIC). Once she's done with her Masters, which will be the semester before I am done with mine, she'll most likely be heading up north to find a place for us to live (as I'll be following her when I graduate). I say, "unless things change", because she hasn't been having a good experience with them lately and she may try and find a better job - which means I may not end up "back home" (since I'm from Virginia originally). I told her, I'll follow her first but I won't be moving around. I need 2 years, after I get my Masters, are supervision under and LCSW so I can get my license. I cannot just abandon my clients after a couple of years, and then have to rebuild any contacts I would have made so that I could have my own practice. It takes years of working in a clinic, or someone else's practice, to build credibility and make contacts so that your private practice doesn't sink like a rock in its first year. I don't really care where I actually end up, I just know that if I want to make a decent living it will have to be in a decent sized city (though, I have no intention of actually living in a city). But that's many months away, and right now I'm more worried about all those papers I have to write in the coming weeks. :( Hopefully, you'll get the job that you want, and it'll turn out to be the job that you really want to have for the rest of your career (i.e. you get the job you want, but it turns out that it sucks). Well, the catch is that I can do my job anywhere, but I cannot do my job if I have to move often. If I'm on the move frequently I might as well not even have a case load of clients, because moving too frequently can put a damper building that clinician/patient relationship. But, I'll deal with that road when I get to it.

That would be awesome to have a Wiki meetup. Okie dokie. I went through the darn thing and relized the movies did not exist, and were not even a rumour. Then I did a search for the name and found only the older citizen. Since the assertion was being an actor, but had never acted in these future films, I figured WP:Crystal. Failing those assertions made him fail WP:PEOPLE and WP:N. I did find an American actor "Michael J Prescott Hewes Rudd" at NYTimes, and when I searched his one listed film "It Nearly Wasn't Christmas", I found an actor named "Michael Ruud" (2 u's, one D), who played a character named "J Prescott Hewes". Add to that the fact that I had a day that had left me cranky. I am one of those who wishes that more pics could stay with an article but I also understand why they can't. I simply reacted poorly. You have taken it with such grace that I now feel doubly a chucklehead. I will take a look at your suggestions when I have a little more time and see if there is something we can do to improve the article. I have come to feel that Kurosawa is the best film director that I know. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde "seeing an AK film for the first time is the beginning of a lifelong romance".
