Sleet Versus Hail
[edit]Yes, what you've been seeing in California IS hail. SLEET falls with winter storms, not thunderstorms. As a professional meteorologist, I don't know how many times I've wanted to slap people for getting sleet and hail confused (the people on the sleet page among them ;-) ). You virtually never get sleet out in California, but hail occurs fairly often. On the other hand, sleet is much more common in New York. Check out this graphic 1 for SLEET, and this page 2 for HAIL formation. Also, here's another good page on the differences 3. Famartin 15:49, 4 March 2006

tons
[edit]In your edit summary on Zion National Park in response to by editorial comment in the article about identity of tons, you said "short ton if it came from any american documentation which seems 98% likely".
However, if it in fact came directly from an American soils sciences journal or most any other scientific source, its about a 98% chance that the tons are metric tons (they might, of course, be "Mg" (megagrams) in a journal like that). Gene Nygaard 03:36, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Elf - curious why you said "can't have 3rd-level header w/out 2nd-level" - it is perfectly possible to have this, and it looks a lot better without the heavily underlined 2nd-level header in a short page like that - MPF 22:32, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! Keep up the good work! :-) MPF 22:47, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
- 9 days is a close one! AFAIK, the only appearnce effects I can think of is in a TOC, which only appears when there's more than 3 headers (when funny things happen to the numbering in the TOC). In my browser, 2nd level headers give an ugly underline right across the page, making it look like a much more complete change of subject (like a line of 4 hyphens); it would be nice if the refs/ext links could also take a 3rd level header, but 2nd level headers seem (unlike other headers) to be a definite wiki policy (so I leave them!). Maybe I should raise it at wherever header policy is discussed and get 3rd levels OK'd for short articles - MPF 22:59, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
Min Pin
[edit]Hello Elf.
I normally agree with most of your changes, but you made a change to the Minpin page that I disagree with.
There was an external link I placed on the page a year ago for a rescue organization. The link has been there virtually since the inception of the page, so I guess I am a bit confused why you would suddenly think that it should be removed.
I understand WP:NOT, but I going to replace the link for two reaons: 1) It is informative and 2) Its been there for almost a year and a half. I do not think that 2 links is a problem.

Min Pin, part 2
[edit]I would disagree, only because if a rescue organization is large and notable, I do not see why it cannot be included. I understand that things change over time. I guess that I am not quite following what you're saying. :(

Replying to Raw feeding article editing advice
[edit]Thanks for taking the time to write an explanation of your editorial policy. The article that I first edited appeared to be exclusively angled at dog feeders and excessively biased towards processed feed manufacturers. Now that you have explained that it is "controversial" it will need much more attention and work to even begin to contain a fair picture of the amount of spin that is put out by manufacturers against any form of feeding except their own product.
The Salon.com article is an op ed that appears to have been undertaken for "colour". Do you seriously consider that a quote mined with third party references is worth throwing in? I can produce ten times these within a few minutes. But will they increase understanding of the basic "nutrition" argument? Your selected quote really says nothing more than that the British vet association agrees that there are dangers in feeding raw food. It doesn't say that other forms of feeding are NOT dangerous. And it doesn't say that raw feeding cannot be accomplished safely. Take the quote down please.
Two questions: Do you derive income from dog training, breeding?
Do you derive income from a pet feed manufacturer?
I am an Australian and you will have to allow for cultural differences in the approach to feeding animals that I may inject into the article.

Min Pin part 3
[edit]OK, I reread what you said. I think we're crossing wires on this conversation, b/c your page keeps changing after I type something. :P
I placed the link there not to endorse the rescue effort per se, rather to 1) demonstrate that it exists and 2) providing alternate breed information. You have to excuse me today, as I just retured from vacation and have been nicotine free for 5 days, so I'm a little frayed. That rescue group provides some breed information.
Also, I try to get on Wikipedia as often as possible to see how this page and a few others are doing. Sadly, my job frowns heavily on Wikipeida work, and I have little time to devote to Wikipedia at home b/c of family obligations. So, if vandalism has appeared on this page for any stretch of time and I missed it, my apologies.

Disambiguation pages
[edit]Hey there--It looks to me as if you've around on Wikipedia long enough to have encountered disambiguation pages and to have read the manual of style page on disambiguation pages, so I'm not sure why you keep futzing with the Martingale page to make it nonstandard. It's just a disambiguation page; there's nothing special about the introductory phrase that needs nonstandard formatting or phrasing. If you're annoyed because it's no longer the primary page about a mathematical topic, I'm sorry. It's still just a standard disambiguation page. Elf | Talk 00:01, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
- Why must disambiguation pages be a special exception to the standard rule that if one writes about a word, rather than using the word to write about what it refers to, then one italicizes it? That rule is stated in Wikipedia:Manual of Style and I think in the Chicago Manual of Style. Michael Hardy 00:04, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Renaming the "Kelpie_(dog)" page
[edit]G'day Elf. I noticed you undid my rename of the Kelpie article the other day. OK (remembering that I don't own the page!), I confess that I didn't open the discussion on the List_of_Dog_Breeds, but I did propose it on the Kelpie Talk page, back in April. Obviously, nobody now reads that page...
I have opened a proposal on the LDB page, using my original arguments, and adding rebuttals to your edit summary. Basically, the ANKC represents only show Kelpies, which by definition are not Kelpies -- the argument is that Kelpies (as represented by the WKC) were bred as working dogs where conformation was, is and never will be important, and the name has never included the word "Australian". I should mention that the WKC (the primary authority on the breed) does not use the adjective "Australian" anywhere. The term "Australian Kelpie" is of UK origin, back when Australia was a British colony, and crept into the FIC from England. Further, looking at the "Maltese_(dog)" naming convention, there are only two uses of the word Kelpie, the other being a malevolent Celtic water spirit. Taking things to their illogical extreme, one might insist that the Poodle be renamed "French Poodle", or the Shi-Tzu to "Chinese Shi-Tzu"... Gordon | Talk, 22 June 2006 @06:45 UTC
- Sorry Elf, LDB=List of Dog Breeds :) I've also made a suggestion/proposal in Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Dog_breeds/Templates to address the kennel club/breed standard question -- it's hidden in the "Dog Registries" section, about halfway down. Technical communicator vocation?
[edit]I noticed your addition to Wikipedia:Wikipedians/Technical Communicators and I'm curious what your vocation is and/or how you would define "technical communicator." I would love to have a full-time job editing sites like Wikipedia; do you know of any avenues that would make this a possibility for me? I'm watching this page, so you can reply here. --J. J. 23:53, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
- Technical communicator: Someone who conveys information about technology to its consumers. That's pretty broad, intentionally. "Technical writer" would be the traditional name, but there's so much more involved than writing. I suppose that if I knew of a full-time job editing pages like Wikipedia, I'd be doing it myself. :-) Some companies use wikis as an internal tool for various things and so sometimes I get to muck around on a wiki site, but only as it relates directly to the work I'm supposed to be doing, which often involves a variety of media and an awful lot of figuring out what questions to ask, ferreting out answers, determining which info is going to be of use, and choosing how best to convey it to be most helpful to the intended audience.
- Having a technical background is very helpful; technical tech writers always seem to be in great demand, at least in and around Silicon Valley. I slowly morphed from being a software developer to being a tech communicator because I could write and I liked solving the puzzles the one needs to solve as a tech communicator. So I was always writing or rewriting stuff in my role as computer scientist, so when someone would ask me for writing samples, I had stuff I could show and talk about. I learned most about effective tech communication, however, when I started working with other writers and editors, taking a few university extension classes on the subject, attending STC conferences and workshops, and reading books (and STC member proceedings & magazines) on how to do a better job. In theory, you can network at STC meetings & events, too, to meet people & maybe find leads on jobs or directions to take or get involved in STC so that other people get to know you & your work. I've never done that.
- Hope this helps. Elf | Talk 01:06, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
- Definitely helps to know about the STC. I'll likely return in a few weeks and let you know what's panned out for me! --J. J. 14:34, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Editing on "The Prestige" (film)
[edit]Elf, you noted that the plot summary of The Prestige needs more work. The reason it needs more work is that we had a clear, coherent, accurate, and grammatical plot summary a few days ago, but Wiki-newbie undid it and restored his version of the section, which the one of a few days ago had replaced. The section has a contentious history on the article's talk page. Some of us had explained to Wiki-newbie what we saw as flaws in his rewrite, and he put it back (or something close to it) anyway.
I'm new to Wikipedia, and I don't know all the procedures and etiquette, but it seems to me there's something wrong with ignoring tactful feedback from multiple contributors and insisting on one's own version when good reasons have been given for not using it. Can you help? Cognita 04:34, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. As a significant contributor to the page in question, you are invited to this page to give your opinion on the inclusion or exclusion of Image:Westie.JPG in the article West Highland White Terrier. The specific criteria being examined appear to be:

Catahoula Leopard Dog
[edit]- I used such language only after that user repeatedly reverted to their image without a single comment. Simple reversion of images that have been objected to as unacceptable multiple times isn't simple edit warring, it's a form of vandalism as defined on WP:Vandalism as: "Image vandalism Uploading shock images, inappropriately placing explicit images on pages, or simply using any image in ways that are disruptive." After assuming good faith in that the user wanted to improve the article with their image rather than misuse Wikipedia as a personal gallery, and then having my efforts at explaining policy reasonably rejected without discussion, leaves me no choice but to warn a user against vandalism. Furthermore, if you look at the user's contributions, you can see that they have done nothing on Wikipedia but upload their pet picture and place it in the "appropriate" article. I could have definitely have used softer language the first time around, but it's hard to be kind when I meet a new user who has done this exact same thing every week. I often place welcome templates and answer questions from new users, but I have zero patience for those who think Wikipedia is here to be a personal pet gallery and never make an effort at contributing factual content even to the articles for their own dog's breed. VanTucky 22:38, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that recently you carried out a copy and paste page move from Talk:Bogatyr. Please do not move articles by copying and pasting them because it splits the article's history, which is needed for attribution and is helpful in many other ways. In most cases, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. If there is an article that you cannot move yourself by this process, follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Requested moves. Also, if there are any other articles that you copied and pasted, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. This is not a big deal, as it was just a disambiguation page. But attribution is important. If moving content without cut-and-paste seems too complex, just ask an administrator. That's what we're here for. Cheers! — madman bum and angel 05:52, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
- If you looked at Talk:Bogatyr, you'd notice that I moved only one section from that page to a new page of its own. I left lots of breadcrumbs in the talk and summary sections so that the history of that section could be traced--but there is no way with which I'm familiar that you can move just one section from one page and only the edit history associated with that one section. You either have to move the whole thing and then copy & paste the other sections back into a new page, or you have to copy and paste that section into a new page and leave the rest where it was. Leastwise, that's the way it has worked in the 4 years I've been doing wikpedia admin tasks. But if there is now a facility for figuring out what history goes with what section of a page and by some magic moving only one section, I'd love to know where the instructions are. Thanks for your concern. Elf | Talk 01:34, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

AmStaff: Why all the questions?
[edit]I understand that everyone has an opinion on the topic of American Staffordshire Terriers. Here's mine. I have a 10 month old AmStaff AND a 4 year old child. I am about sick to death of all of the nasty looks and snide comments about my dog and it's potential threat to my family. If you have taken on the responsibility of owning a canine then you had better take complete responsibility on the way it behaves and reacts with people and other animals. If you neglect, abuse, or degrade your dog (OF ANY BREED!) it will react in a negative way. IF you beat your child severely while its growing up are your shocked when that child becomes aggressive or fearful of humans? Come on people. . . . . use your heads. I have owned a male German Shepherd, Rot-mix, now my little Dakota (AMSTAFF). . . . .I am proud to call them one of my family. Never once has a person gotten bit, hell. . . if another dog get agressive with them mine always slinks away with the cuts and nips. Treat your animals with respect. Granted there are always those freak accidents, but if Pitt Bull bites only make up about 18% of all reported aggravated dog bites. . . . who does the other 82% make up? I'm just so tired of the comments on how I am a bad mother just because of my choice in a puppy. Dakota plays hide and seek, tag, and doesn't EVER let my son out of her sight. Be responsible parents and you have nothing to worry about. I had my face bitten into and a chunk taken out of my lip by a lab when I was 5. . . . you don't see me verbaly pissing on them when one walks by. Respect your neighbors animals, they are part of the family too. template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. BJBot (talk) 10:01, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

California photo requests now by County
[edit]I just spent the past few days moving all the California photo requests into County categories to make it easier for photographers to locate requests in the locations where they take photos. [edit]Fixed--prob was anon vandalism removing text.
Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Socialize, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Socialize is blatant advertising for a company, product, group, service or person that would require a substantial rewrite in order to become an encyclopedia article.
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Socialize, please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. To see the user who deleted the page, click here CSDWarnBot (talk) 18:31, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
- Huh, just checked now, and by some magic it remains just a redirect to socialization the way I created it 3 years ago. So I guess it has been fixed... Elf | Talk 04:17, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
Dock jumping
[edit]Hi Great job on the agility article. I recently started a page about Dock jumping, if you would be so kind as to take a look (even though it is a work in progress) and maybe give some hints to make it better. gd8man 05:46, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Entlebucher
[edit]Hi Elf,
Today I was looking in the Dutch Wikipedia and found your picture of the Entlebucher Sennenhund. Although Max has got all the looks of a nice Entlebucher there is one thing missing... His tail. Either cut or born with a short tail Max doesn't meet the nowadays breed standard. All Entlebuchers should have a long tail having at least some white hair at the tip. Cutting is not allowed anymore and dogs born with a short tail are not allowed for breeding.
If you like you could use one of the nice pictures of our male Entlebucher called Seppl (which is Swiss for little Joe).
Best regards,

- Thanks for the comment. I haven't done any editing on the Dutch Wikipedia, as I don't speak the language. You can either upload your photo and insert it into the article yourself, or contact someone who has edited the dutch wikipedia page (you can look at the page history for some usernames of people who have worked on it). Dog breed mergers
[edit]Hi, I was doing some work on List of dog breeds and I stumbled across a discussion from March 2006, which you participated in, regarding a proposed merge of East German Shepherd Dog with German Shepherd Dog. Nothing was ever done re the proposal but I still feel the articles should be merged and I have applied the tags on both articles to indicate this. Just letting you know incase you have an opinion to share on the matter. Take care, ~ Ameliorate U T C @ 23:59, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
And I about to propose a merge for German Spitz as well, only to find you proposed the same thing 2 years ago as well. I have revived that discussion also. ~ Ameliorate U T C @ 00:19, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
A tag has been placed on Istrian Hound, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing no content to the reader. Please note that external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article don't count as content. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template hangon
to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Jasynnash2 (talk) 13:46, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Dear Elf,
We are very interested in using your picture of "Brandy Mae" the Parson Russell Terrier, for an illustration in a magazine in the UK.
Please contact me at m.batel@hotmail.com as soon as you can and I could give you more details as we would need a Hi-Res version of it.
Thank you.

[edit]I don't have a preference on the orphan status of these. I suggest taking it up with Avocado who is the one who wanted the tags restored. reqbreedphoto
[edit]Hi -- I noticed that you are the editor who originally wrote the reqbreedphoto template. I wanted to let you know that I've posted a proposal to deprecate reqbreedphoto in favor of reqphoto. I don't mean any disrespect to your work by this -- I have just found that consolidating unnecessary photo templates makes it easier to organize the huge mass of "Wikipedia requested photographs" categories, and it simplifies writing bots to do some of the grunt work. Please see the proposal at Template talk:Reqbreedphoto for more information. Thanks for your time. Tim Pierce (talk) 01:34, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

The competition is “Stamp Sheetlet Design Competition in Honour of Professor Charles Kao's Being Awarded the Nobel Prize”, which organizing by Hong Kong Science Museum. The main aim of this competition is to commemorate Professor Charles Kao's being awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for his groundbreaking achievements in fibre optics communication. Unreferenced BLPs
[edit]Hello Elf! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 317 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the unreferencedBLP tag. Here is the article:

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Pit Bull. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pit Bull. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.
Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:09, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of List of Old English (Anglo-Saxon) surnames
[edit]A tag has been placed on List of Old English (Anglo-Saxon) surnames requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article consists of a dictionary definition or other article that has been transwikied to another project and the author information recorded.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. File permission problem with File:189600 5558PleatedShadeAkkia.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:189600 5558PleatedShadeAkkia.jpg, which you've sourced to Akkia. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-enwikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add OTRS pending to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-enwikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sreejith K (talk) 06:06, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
