Your reply to request for edit of Caroline Hoxby page
I noticed that you responded to a request for deletion of a paragraph from the Caroline Hoxby entry by saying that it appeared to be well sourced and had been discussed before. If you look at the paragraph again, you will see that it contains a concluding sentence about allegations of race and gender bias. This sentence was considered inappropriate by the consensus of editors in 2012. There is a long discussion of it on the Talk page under the heading, "Allegation of race/gender bias." I think you probably overlooked this long discussion. The bottom line is that a school newspaper is the only source to document this; furthermore, Hoxby wrote a letter to the paper (which is linked to on the Talk page) denying that she had made such a charge and also denied it to the WSJ. The consensus was that such a sentence did not belong in her encyclopedia entry. It might be added that it is also unfair to Rothstein to have a charge aired against him that the supposed victim claims not to have made in the first place. Rubric6 (talk) 21:18, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Rubric6: The edit request was asking that the entire paragraph be removed from the article, not that the sentence be removed from the paragraph. I stand by my statement on the talk page that the paragraph is well-sourced (given citations from the WSJ, NYT, and Crimson) and reflects the information within those sources, and have made no statement regarding the fairness or appropriateness of that sentence in particular. I didn't consider the discussion from 2012 because it was not relevant to the specific request that was made. (Though I also note this RSN discussion from 2012, the result of which seems to be that information in the Crimson may be considered reliable if notability was otherwise established.) If there's good cause to remove that sentence then I have no problem with its removal, and I'll leave that up to the discussion you set up at WP:BLPN to determine. Thanks! --ElHef (Meep?) 22:15, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

You commented on my spi wp move request
As you have noticed I’ve been on here for a year but I’ve never reported anyone before, that’s why o requested someone to help me move the page to WP, I’m really not sure if I filled out the spi request correctly, if you could take a look or give me some information or direction that would be great, thanks TheKinkdomMan talk 01:30, 22 April 2018 (UTC)
- @TheKinkdomMan: To be honest, I don't have a great deal of SPI experience myself, but it's definitely good that you're trying to do it right! My advice is to take a look at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/SPI/Guide to filing cases - and then be bold and go for it. If you've made a mistake, you certainly won't be the first person to so, and you've got something to learn from. ‑‑ElHef (Meep?) 03:10, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

Jaron Varsano
I suggest you take a look at Jaron Varsano's Instagram which has the correct spelling before lecturing me on mine:
https://www.instagram.com/jaronvarsano
- @CindyShae1986: You have a reasonable point, and I'm starting a discussion at Talk:Gal Gadot. The cited source in the article is a Glamour magazine article, which spells it "Yaron" twice. I did some Googling, and it seems like the spelling is just about interchangeable - I see many articles spelling it each way, with maybe a few more coming back as Yaron (and at least one referring to "Yaron Varsano aka Jaron Varsano").
- Additionally, thanks for doing exactly what I asked you to do - cite a reliable source, and bring it up on my talk page. I'm taking that notice off of your talk page right now! ‑‑ElHef (Meep?) 03:53, 26 June 2018 (UTC)
Semi-protected edit request on 7 July 2018 for the word NEGRO
Hi! For use of the word and its variations as surname I linked Wikipedia ITA and ENG, so for meaning of "ghostwriter", I just didn't link the old idiom. Isn't Wikipedia a "reliable source" for Wikipedia?151.28.177.51 (talk) 19:55, 8 July 2018 (UTC)
- Hello! First off, thanks for continuing the discussion! I work with edit requests quite a bit, and very few users carry on past their initial request.
- To your question - Actually no, Wikipedia is not a reliable source for itself. If we start doing that, then it's very easy to set up circular references, where articles cite each other without there being an external, reliable source. For example, I add the sentence "Red and blue are the same color." to both the Red and Blue articles. In each article, I cite the other as a source. Of course this is an extreme example, but circular references can come up very easily by accident and in much less obvious ways, which is why it's not allowed. The policy on this is located at WP:CIRCULAR. The correct way to do it is to look at the article you want to cite, find out what sources that article uses, and cite those sources directly instead.
- To be able to do the edit you requested, you need to provide reliable, published sources from outside of Wikipedia. Talking about it as a name might be difficult - just about any word can be used as a name in various parts of the world, so I'd be looking for a source that actually discusses the use of the name. A list of people and organizations with variations of Negro in their name doesn't seem noteworthy to add to the article. The parts about the idiom and the translation of the word "ghostwriter" seem like a better fit, but they still need sources.
- Please let me know if I can be of any help here (or with anything else)! ‑‑ElHef (Meep?) 03:26, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
- Hello! Thanks for your appreciation. Can you give me your opinion about this second try? If you think it's OK now, submit it.
- Negro is also a surname present everywhere in Italy, as such and its variants (i.e. Paolo Negro, former football player, Ada Negri, poetess, Giovanni Antonio De Nigris/, jurist, Dal Negro, a company producing playing cards and children's toys...). Moreover, until the ban, it was used in idioms referring to someone doing a tiring and/or unpleasant work also referring to slavery (LAVORARE COME UN N*, "working like a n*") and it's still at present days the only Italian word meaning "GHOSTWRITER", also if now always replaced by English term, or, rarely, with SCRITTORE OMBRA (literally, shadow writer).

Well, I can't understand Italian, so if Google Translate is interpreting any of this wrong for me, please let me know. You're going in the right direction but I don't think you're quite there yet. The problem I see with the sources you're using is that you're citing facts (name statistics, dictionary definitions) but you're interpreting those facts yourself. On Wikipedia, that's called original research, and it's not permitted. Here's where I'm specifically seeing that in your request right now:
"Negro is also a surname present everywhere in Italy, as such and its variants..."
- It sounds to me like you're taking the statistics from one source, adding in specific instances of the name from other sources, and using them to reach the conclusion that the name is "everywhere" and the variants are as well. None of the sources actually say that, so combining them together to say something new is a form of original research called synthesis. (As an aside - the name may be widespread, but it isn't everywhere. Don't use hyperbole - be specific.)"...until the ban, it was used in idioms referring to someone doing a tiring and/or unpleasant work also referring to slavery..."
- The dictionary definition doesn't say anything about that changing after the ban, or about it meaning tiring, unpleasant, or slavery. (Unless I'm missing it in the translation.)"...it's still at present days the only Italian word meaning "GHOSTWRITER"..."
- You haven't cited anything that says it's the only word - in fact, you go on to say the opposite since "scrittore ombra" is also used (and you didn't cite anything that says that phrase is rarely used). I also don't see anything that says it's always replaced by the English term.
The other obstacle I see is - what makes this information noteworthy for inclusion in the article? For the name part, as I said before, pretty much any word can be used as a name all over the world, so what makes this different? Is this a particularly common name in Italy relative to the rest of the world? Is it a surprisingly widespread name in Italy given the offensive nature of the word? For the rest of it, Wikipedia is not a dictionary. Listing all the meanings of the word in every language is beyond the scope of this project - so show a source that gives additional information that brings the dictionary into the encyclopedia. ‑‑ElHef (Meep?) 16:22, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
N* #3
Hello! This time I have a different point of wiew about some corrections.
[...]The problem I see with the sources you're using is that you're citing facts (name statistics, dictionary definitions) but you're interpreting those facts yourself. "Negro is also a surname present everywhere in Italy, as such and its variants..." - It sounds to me like you're taking the statistics from one source [...]
My source are the phone White Pages in Italy, and it shows there are people, often whole families, surnamed N*, subscribing a landline and living in any place here. If "widespread" sounds better, let's use it, no problem, but I don't see where's my interpretation, I just showed and probed surname existence here in my country.
[...]"...until the ban, it was used in idioms referring to someone doing a tiring and/or unpleasant work also referring to slavery..." - The dictionary definition doesn't say anything about that changing after the ban, or about it meaning tiring, unpleasant, or slavery. (Unless I'm missing it in the translation.)[...]
Yes, I think you missed it in the translation :) It's all written from the middle of #6 line, after the word GIALLO. There are references to slavery, hard work, ghostwriter and also to the ended use of the word in a polite contexthttp://www.treccani.it/vocabolario/negro_%28Sinonimi-e-Contrari%29/
[...]"...it's still at present days the only Italian word meaning "GHOSTWRITER"..." - You haven't cited anything that says it's the only word - in fact, you go on to say the opposite since "scrittore ombra" is also used (and you didn't cite anything that says that phrase is rarely used). I cited Treccani, the most famous Italian encyclopedia, if anyone else can find another such reliable source offering different synonymous, please fix me, I'm just trying to contribute. As for replacement with English word, what can I do? Provide a statistic (AWWW!!!) searching on Google how many times in Italian scripts GHOSTWRITER is used, compared to SCRITTORE OMBRA?
[...]what makes this information noteworthy for inclusion in the article? For the name part, as I said before, pretty much any word can be used as a name all over the world, so what makes this different? I think this information is noteworthy because it's uncommon that a word used mainly as racial slur can be also a quite innocent, sometimes mandatory thingh to tell or write, as a surname. Imagine an introduction, or a police check made by a black skinned officer: "What's your name?" "Negro!" It can look like a gag, but cop first, and stranger later, will not laugh for sure! As Wikipedia ENG is consulted all over the world, I found helpful to add some info, like it has be done on the same page for other languages as Finnish, Turkish and Hungarian, that a not native Italian can hardly be aware of, but find them interesting. 151.28.66.0 (talk) 20:21, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
I was forgetting...
Other Romance languages Italian In Italian, negro (male) and negra (female) were used as neutral term equivalents of "negro" until at least the 1980s. Famed 1960s pop singer Fausto Leali is still called il negro bianco ("the white negro") in Italian media,[23][24][25] on account of his naturally hoarse style of singing [...]
If a nickname given to a pop singer by media is "noteworthy for inclusion in the article", can I have the same supervisor who approved it? ;)151.28.94.198 (talk) 11:18, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Pending changes patrol: Sources needed for Days of the Year pages
I see you recently accepted a pending change to October 27 that did not include a direct source. I was able to find a source to support this addition in the linked biography and add it to October 27.
You're probably not aware of this change, but Days of the Year pages are no longer exempt from WP:V and direct sources are required for additions. For details see the WikiProject Days of the Year style guide.
As a pending changes patroller, please do not accept additions to day of year pages where no direct source has been provided on that day of year page. The burden to provide sources for additions to these pages is on the editor who adds or restores material to these pages. Thank you. Toddst1 (talk) 18:44, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Public Money & Management
Hello - I understand you have a COI policy, but is your position that you would prefer for inaccurate and out-of-date information to be shared with the public on your website, than to accept an edit from somebody who has knowledge of the item discussed on the page, and can provide proof?
That seems to be a very strange set of priorities to me. No wonder Wikipedia is often cited as the biggest cause of misinformation in the world. — Preceding unsigned comment added by James.cleaver.tandf (talk • contribs) 17:04, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
- @James.cleaver.tandf: I haven't accepted or declined your edit, nor have I stated any preference as to the content of the article. I simply advised you of Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, and put your request into Category:Requested edits, where it will get attention from editors who have more expertise in responding to such requests than I do. Please note that Wikipedia is edited by volunteers, and a volunteer editor who works with conflict-of-interest edits will respond to your request in due course.
