Conflicts of interest
[edit]Hello. I got your message on my talk page, I think the tagging issue on One Energy is already dealt with. I however call your attention to our policy with respect to conflicts of interest, especially regarding your recent edits to Wind turbine design and Distributed Generation. You should absolutely avoid editing those articles — especially if your contributions mostly amount to linking to One Energy, material published by the company or material about the company. If you should nevertheless edit those articles, you are expected to actively disclose your position on the talk page, as already requested by User:Semmendinger on their talk page when they answered your request. - @Ariadacapo: Thank you for your help! And thank you for bearing with me as I discover new guidelines for editing on Wikipedia. I would like to undo the changes you made to my contributions to Distributed Generation because I think the points I included are important and relevant, even without the mention of and linking to One Energy. - Edits like this one amount to name-dropping One Energy with a source copy-pasting a press release, as the fourth name behind GE, Siemens and Vestas. That’s not very good editing. Please slow down. The article One Energy still has some problems of its own. One of them is the WP:OR required to support the single (!) actual metric about the company’s size in the market. Another is the list of appearances that you added, which are not part of an encyclopedia article. You are also uploading corporate images at Wikimedia Commons as "own work", which is an extra burden over there. I do not doubt for one instant your good faith but you must realize that COI editing is very difficult. There is a reason why our policy very strongly discourages editing affected articles directly. I suggest for now that you focus on improving existing articles with the valuable knowledge and media that you have access to. If when you make an edit, the motivation is "add a link to One Energy", then the answer should simply be: don’t do it. Thank you. Ariadacapo (talk) 19:05, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
- @Ariadacapo: That makes total sense. I apologize for getting a little out of hand lately. I'm going to take your advice and work on One Energy itself before I make other edits to Wikipedia. If the article itself isn't ready, it definitely shouldn't be linked to from other pages! Thanks again for your help. Please let me know if you notice other things I could improve. - @Ariadacapo: Hi! I'm working on making the improvements you suggested. The first on my list is correcting the way I'm uploading files. You said listing photographs as "own work" is an extra burden on the Wikimedia Commons folks. I do not want to be a burden on them at all! But I'm having a hard time figuring out how else to upload photos that were taken by me or our photographer on staff. For example, the photo I added to Wind turbine design I thought was very helpful to show what a gearless wind turbine looks like. Since it was deleted due to lack of permission, does that mean I (or our staff photographer) should follow the protocol on Commons:OTRS? Does one of us need to email permissions-commons@wikimedia.org using this template? For future uploads, how can I provide permission during upload to avoid having the image deleted and having to go through this process again? Again, thank you for all your help!
