Om our last communication == Precious anniversary ==

Precious
Four years!

--Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:17, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

And what 4 years it has been, even the social changes from our last communication is frightening and bizarre. I hope you are well. A bonus from COVID-19 lockdown is that I have finally signed up to a basic introduction to Opera, and how to "read" the stories through the music. Small steps but getting there. Stay safe. @Gerda Arendt:

A Member of the Choir

Hello! Upon reading your principle I was so struck that I wanted to stop by and share another quote of Sagan's I thought you might appreciate: "A central lesson of science is that to understand complex issues (or even simple ones), we must try to free our minds of dogma and to guarantee the freedom to publish, to contradict, and to experiment." Much of what Sagan said can aptly be applied to the ethic of Wikipedia. I wonder what he would have thought of the website if he'd lived to see it? Anyhoo, its always nice to see someone who seems sensible. Please take care. Joe (talk) 09:05, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

@JoePhin:. Why thank you, your message bought a smile to my face in these bizarre and strange times. The Sagan quote is not one that I remember but is as you say relevent to the wikipedia project as a whole. He was to me a true scientist who knew instinctively that for true scientific research to work you had to be aware of your own luggage / foibles. Edmund Patrick confer 09:30, 8 January 2021 (UTC)
@Edmund Patrick: If only we could see ourselves objectively, biases and all, and thereby perhaps be disabused of them. Here's a quote to that effect:
Oh, would some Power give us the gift
To see ourselves as others see us!
It would from many a blunder free us,
And foolish notion:
What airs in dress and gait would leave us,
And even devotion!
That's Robert Burns' To a Louse. Here's to lost devotion to falsehoods! Please continue to be well. Joe (talk) 08:01, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
