Fluorine pharmaceuticals

Hi. Heard you were the pharma "guy". I am working on Fluorine. Have not gotten to pharma stuff yet (working with what I am better at first!) Wonder if you have any advice or references. I did find one book that is a general guide on the role of F in medicine. (we have it in article, now, but I need to ILL a copy.)

There is a brief description of the use of fluorine in pharmaceuticals in Organofluorine#Biological_role, which might be a place to start. I did a quick literature search and found several general review articles. Wow. Awesome answer! Gracias. I will pull some of these and at least scan some of them. Lots of times I find if I force myself to understand stuff, then I can explain things better for the reader.  ;-)

I was just reading the pharma section last night. We do have a pretty decent amount there already: 3 paras and a lot of specific examples (some organizing principles), as well as several of those refs. I think the major thing is to try to make it just a little more accessible and "so what" (more inferences, less lists). We should name drop Prozac at least (reader appreciates some connection to things he has heard of). Maybe explain that the reason for the use of fluorine in aenesthetics is unflammability and apparently they dominate the market, too. Maybe add something on the fluorinators used or industry (like is it the fine chemical industry making building blocks) or $ value. That said, it really is good content in there, now.

I want to play with the org a little in general in that Biological roles section. I think pharma (or perhaps pharma and agrochem) deserve their own section. We are skimpy on agrochem, but I read a ref last night and it is pretty significant there and apparantly fluorination used for very similar reasons (ring stabilization and lipophilicity), which we should say in article but don't. More of a tradeoff wrt cost. Poisons should be separated out (very different mechanism of action). And perhaps put with the plants that make poisons. I also want to understand why the bacteria that make organofluorines do so. Apparently the bushes do it so deer and cows won't eat them. But a bacteria? Is it binding F, to protect itself from disruption of Ca mechanisms in the cell? I should also understand why fluoroacetate is a poison (must be very different reasons than F ion as F-acetate has a C-F bond, not a source of F ion. I also want to have a separate subsection header for dental stuff...we do have a decent para now, but like to blow that out to 2 and then have a subsection header so reader sees it. Not just mixed in so low profile (we actually have an FA on water fluoridation).

Commercial use of 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde

Hi Edgar. Can you (or anyone else reading this message) comment on commercial uses for 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde? I believe it may be used in the flavor and fragrance industry and in pharmaceuticals as a building block material; beyond that not sure.

I have an interest in this compound (and syringaldehyde, as a related chemical compound) as I am getting involved with a start-up company that can produce both of these aldehydes as green chemicals from non-food biomass. Thet are by-products of vanillin production, and I am looking for commercial outlets for each.

I don't have any first hand knowledge of how 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde is used commercially. A quick look in the Available Chemicals Directory shows 170 suppliers for this chemical, which is quite a lot from my experience. This suggests that it is quite widely used. I agree that it is very likely to be used as a flavor and fragrance agent (see http://www.thegoodscentscompany.com/data/rw1040191.html for example) and as a chemical intermediate for pharmaceuticals (any maybe pesticides). But beyond that, I don't think I could say much. I have seen the reference book Ullman's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry used here on Wikipedia as a source for information about the industrial uses of chemicals, so if you can find access to it, that might help. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:21, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Looks fine now. Thanks for protecting it. I believe an indefinite semi-protection would be appropriate, though. Patrick Bateman is part of a 4chan meme, and will only be continued to be vandalized by 4chan, as evident by the edit history (months and months of edits by people adding the "doubles/dubs/numbers" crap). Delete an image

Hi Edgar

How do I delete an image I erroneously uploaded to commons? The image in question is ":File:CentreStructureConcept.JPG" and is currently untagged. Thank you for any help. Chris

Thanks Edgar, but now I'm confused. I first uploaded the image into commons but I couldn't get my article to link to it so I uploaded it again by clicking on the link my article made when I saved the article. So I presumed I now had two articles and I needed to delete the one in commons but, as I said earlier, I couldn't find it so I presumed it had been deleted for lack of copyright info. Now the image in my article has gone so I'm gussing that's the one you deleted or were they one and the same image? Anyway I will upload the image again via my article and then complete the copyright data. Please advise if I'm missing something here.

Request for linking 3-Bromofuran

Hi, While you are on the Rosefuran page you will see a link in red under Synthesis for 3-bromofuran. When you click, it says the page does not exist...yet it does! The problem arose because in Wikipedia titles, capitalization matters. 3-Bromofuran and 3-bromofuran are different articles with 3-bromofuran being a redirect to 3-Bromofuran. The issue was solved when User:Benjah-bmm27 created the redirect. -- Ed (Edgar181) 18:15, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Yes. The page had been repeatedly used for promotional purposes. It had been repeatedly blanked by other users for that reason, and then repeatedly restored by the user. Simply removing this page helps prevent the problem from recurring. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:14, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

I think I may have recomended a too hard too fast response in this case. (is this a case of WP:BITE ?) A quick hard responses is needed in most cases (pure spammers) but, there seems to be a chance that the person is in a good position to contribute to the article ( working an advice beaurau). It won't be useful to block the other IP address because the editor has moved on to a new one and is unlikely to be able to return to the previous one. A range block would be an alternate way to handle it, but that doesn't seem to be necessary at this point because the disruption at Angels & Stars is not too much of a problem at this point (unless I'm missing something). MSU Interview

Dear Edgar181,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

The user that you blocked on 8 February( he opened an edit war on Ankara Airport page) opened another user (Unfortunately he doing this alot...) and vandalize again the same page and another pages. It is believed that Inkscape can handle this problem by removing background and increasing 5px at hight in document attribute. Need help from the smarter

Hello there! I'm (rarely lately, but am planning to return for active editing sometime soon) working on fluorine. Got three questions and you were recommended for me as a man who "know[s] a lot or hard-core chemistry." So it'd be neat if you could help me.

1. HF/SbF₅. While I already know there is probably no "H[SbF₆] with naked protons," I wanna make it sure. Made a short look over the Net; says no protons can exist in solids, but probably in gases. What would you say? Could there be a high vacuum geasous "H[SbF₆] with naked protons"? (also, for me actually, could it be even more acidic if we use AuF₅ instead? just give an opinion)
2. Low melting point. Does it have anything to do with the partial second bonds found in Cl₂, Br₂, and I₂, but not F₂?
3. I can't understand why BiF₅ is polymeric rather than molecular. (I understand the rationale for BeF₂...is it something similar (opposite)?) It could be neat to explain that in a few words.

Tough questions. And I'm probably not the best person to be asking questions like this - I'm an organic chemist, not inorganic.

1. I would agree that referring to HSbF₆ as having a "naked H⁺" is an exaggeration, but it's all a matter of degree. You can't get anything closer to "H⁺" in a chemical compound. It's not very far off to call it a naked proton, so you might as well just call it that. I suspect it's still going to be attached to the SbF₆^- to a certain extent even in high vacuum.

Power Rangers Samurai

I wanna know why when I added the following to Power Rangers Samurai which any observer of said program can see for themselves to be fact but Acalamari and Ryulong claim it to be a personal opinion and blocked me for a period of 24 hours and threatened to make the block permanent if I ever re-added it to Wikipedia, I suspect them to be bullying me but I am not sure. I can't say that I know anything about Power Rangers Samurai, but it appears to me that what you are trying to add is personal opinion, which is not appropriate for Wikipedia articles. It appeared to me to be product promotion, which is not permitted on Wikipedia. The added reference was to a website that is clearly promotional in nature. Perhaps it can be re-added in a way. I agree with you, but I think it is difficult to dispense with ingredients naming (e.g., at this page we can find promotional references of Pacific Coast Borax Company, 20 Mule Team Borax trademark, "Boraxo", "Borateem", Deselex, Henkel etc.). Recently I heard an interview with Russian largest sturgeon farm owner and he spoke about caviar preservatives, including Borax and LIV. This interview is in Russian. Can we place a link to the audio-record? If we add references to the web-sites of caviar companies that use those new Borax substitutions it would also be a promotion, won’t it? Here on the English Wikipedia, an article with the same content as ca:Stephanachne would not qualify for WP:CSD#A3. The criteria is for articles that truly are empty of encylopedic content, not just very short. I was looking at the entry for Glyoxylic Acid and ended up a little confused by the difference in representations between the ball and stick model and the structural diagram (which depicts one less hydrogen than the ball and stick model). Is something amiss?

File:Glyoxylic acid.png is a skeletal diagram, one of the standard ways that chemists depict organic chemical compounds. In these diagrams, carbon atoms and the hydrogen atoms directly attached to them are not shown explicitly. So in this case, two carbon atoms and one hydrogen atom are implicit. Wikipedia's articles about living people are held to a very high standard because of the potential to do real harm - see Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons. The type of information that you are trying to add to the article would be particularly defamatory if it were not true. So in this case, I think a high standard for verification that the wrong person isn't identified is clearly warranted. While it is plausibly the same person, I'm simply not entirely convinced that with the information available that this is the case - and I'm not the only one. Another editor has expressed the same doubts and reverted your previous edits to the article. I have read the discussion and i can understand where you and others are coming from. This man was charged using his Full Name but used his middle name alex as his working name for some reason. Please believe me when i say it is the same person. The wiki article states he worked for the UN and the Prime Minister of albania and so does the press article. IF you go to the reading post site and search for alex standish you will 4 articles in all all regarding this person. I also understand this article is up for deletion - can you tell me why please and when will it be deleted?

It seems likely to me now that the two are the same. But it may be a moot point if the article gets deleted. Wikipedia has notability guidelines for inclusions of biographies and someone has nominated the article for deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alex Standish, arguing the failure to meet these guidelines. These discussions usually last for a week before an administrator decides to either keep or delete the article based on the outcome of the discussion. I added the note about muscarine being the center of Dorothy L. Sayers' novel The Documents in the Case. It appears you deleted it as trivia. I see you are an administrator and a big contributor, so I appreciate your well-earned authority in this matter. I'm a very heavy Wikipedia user; the sentence you removed was my first-ever edit. Since perhaps tens of thousands of people know of muscarine only through this novel, and muscarine is really important to the novel, and I referred to the muscarine article becuase of the novel, I'd like a mention of the novel to appear in the Wikipedia article on muscarine. Usernames for administrator attention

Hi Ed, Is there some precedent or discussion that has taken place in the past regarding blocking promotional usernames, that have only edited in AfC space? If there is, I'd be grateful if you could point me towards it. I make quite a few of these reports at UAA (most of my work is at AfC) and many are softerblocked, but some admins decline. I spend a lot of time at UAA, and it seems to me that most of those types of reports (AFC-only editors with promotional-sounding usernames) are declined. But certainly some administrators will block those. Looking in the archives, I found this: Wikipedia_talk:Usernames_for_administrator_attention/Archive_2#UAA_and_AfC, but it doesn't really settle the issue one way or the other. So I suppose there is no real consensus, and you should feel free to make your own judgement on whether to report them or not, and for now sometimes they'll get blocked and sometimes they won't. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:07, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

KM X-1

Hi Edgar. Someone has moved this page (1-Pentylindol-3-yl)-(2,2,3,3-tetramethylcyclopropyl)methanone to the made-up code number "KM X-1" and I can't move it back for some reason. I don't think this is an appropriate name, seeing as it is just an invented code number that one particular manufacturer seems to be using to promote the compound for sale. It has been suggested that it could be moved to "UR-144" instead, as while this is also a made up code number, it is at least commonly in use by many different people, as opposed to the current one which will send everyone who searches for it on google to one particular vendor's website. But personally I disapprove of these made up names and would favor the correct chemical name, even if it is long and unweildy. Ironically this compound will have a "proper" code number from Abbott (which will be A-xxx,xxx starting with 7 or 8) but in the couple of papers where it is mentioned, they only call it "compound 46" or whatever, its internal code number has not been revealed. I deleted the article because it contained no content suggesting notability (see deletion criteria WP:CSD#A7 for details). Wikipedia has notability criteria for companies to be included - you can read them at Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). If you think the company meets these criteria and you can write an article from a neutral point of view that demonstrates the company has sufficient notability to meet these guidelines, the article will probably be kept. If you think Pura Foods does not meet these guidelines (I'm not sure it does), then you may nominate the article for deletion (see WP:AFD). Because the article was referenced entirely to various Soutron websites, it seemed to consist of only what Soutron says about themselves. Wikipedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view. Without seeing the completed article, I can't really judge whether is passes the significance test. I have undeleted the article and moved it to User:Timtempleton/Soutron Global where you can work on it, and later move it back to the proper title. Under the Wiki rules about removing editors comments (see Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines, section 1.5 "Editing comments, Others' comments") I am loathe to do it myself and really don't want to get into an extended conversation with the person posting. OK, I've added a chembox to your article. I typically get data from ChemSpider. If you sign up for an account there you will see a "Wikibox" button that will give you a formatted chembox with some data already filled in. Some other data, such as CAS#s, I get directly from Chemical Abstracts through my institution's access to SciFinder. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:45, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

The version of Solid State PLC that I deleted was in fact an unambiguously promotional article full of nothing but marketing hyperbole ("leading value-added distributors and agents" "looking for added-value solutions", etc.) written from the company's perspective ("we market our products", etc.) Wikipedia articles must be written from a neutral point of view and should not be merely advertisements masquerading as encyclopedia articles. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:18, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Semi-protect request

Hi. I've contacted you before about semi-protection requests on young Disney and/or Nickelodeon stars' bio pages. You previously protected the Cameron Boyce (actor) biography for about 3 months and the lock expired about a month ago. As I suspected, both he and the show have only gained in popularity since you first protected the page, and the unconstructive edits from young fans has only increased since the lock expired. The edits made to the page in the last month or so aren't necessarily all "vandalism", but they aren't helpful/useful either (I believe only additional interwiki links to new Wikipedia bio pages for him in other lanugages have not been reverted - with the exception of one unsourced credit in the "Filmography" table that I'm leaving for now), so I was hoping you would consider protecting his page again. As I think I've mentioned before - the only useful edits that seem to happen on young Disney stars' pages are usually from confirmed users anyway, so I doubt the page would suffer from an extended lock. --- Crakkerjakk (talk) 02:41, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

I know you're away, but I just thought I'd add an adjacent request to lock the Jessie (TV series) article (the show on which Boyce stars) as well. Will you place protection on the page contributed by "forwardbounce1," so that the page is limited to contributions by the actual page contributor? I'm the contributor of the page, and it has been subjected to recent abuse by the user "johnsmith57."

I filed a complaint against user "johnsmith57," requesting blockage of their account, due to abuse of the page, constant revision, and the fact that the user has engaged in an "edit war" by revising the page nearly ten times in fewer than eight hours, with three of those revisions coming in less than ten minutes.

From my perspective, you were both involved in the edit warring - both repeatedly undoing each other's edits to the article. As for protecting the page, anyone is permitted to edit it, not just the original contributor (see Wikipedia:Ownership of articles for details about Wikipedia's policy relating to this). If two editors disagree over the content of the article, the best thing to do is to discuss potential changes to the article on the article's talk page. If the disagreement can be resolved, there are ways to get assistance from other editors: Wikipedia:Dispute resolution. I am about to start an article on Evan Griffiths. My motive is (1) he looks like he did something slightly interesting and (2) I hope that if I write a little bit someone else who knows more will add to it and I'll learn something. Sometimes works. Eventually. Anyhow, it looks as though you were involved in the deletion of an entry on Evan Griffiths some time ago.
