August 2013 WikiProject Christianity Newsletter
ICHTHUS |
August 2013 |
From the Editor
Welcome to the August 2013 issue of the WikiProject Christianity newsletter. We focus on the historical Jesus and reflect on the last month.
The project has another featured picture, The ruins of Holyrood Chapel, a digitisation of an oil-on-canvas painting. Our top-importance article, Jesus, has been nominated for Featured Article status, the discussion can be seen here; Knights of Colombus has also been nominated as a FAC.
Ecgbert (bishop) and Church architecture in Scotland have both this month achieved Good Article status.
Our project had several of its articles featured in the main page DYK section, including Hinckley Priory, Little Chapel, St Peter's Church, Ropsley, Chip Ingram, St John the Evangelist's Church, Corby Glen, Great George Street Congregational Church, St Mary's Church, Walton-on-the-Hill and Bunge church.
Our thanks go to all of those who have worked to achieve these article milestones.
Church of the month
This image, of Maillezais Cathedral and created by Selbymay was this month promoted to featured picture status.
Membership report
We would like to welcome our newest members, Thechristophermorris, Psmidi and Jchthys. Thank you all for your interest in this effort. If any members, new or not, wish any assistance, they should feel free to leave a message at the Christianity noticeboard or with me or other individual editors to request it.
Focus on...
THE
HISTORICAL JESUS
What was Jesus like? What did he preach? Did he claim to be the Messiah? Did he predict an apocalypse? What can we know about him outside a religious context? The Historical Jesus article discusses what can be known about Jesus with various degrees of probability. While scholars agree on the over all flow and outline of Jesus' life (his baptism by John, debated Jewish authorities, healings, and his crucifixion by Pilate) they have built various and diverging portraits of the rest of his life. These range from minimalist portraits that accept very little of the gospel accounts to maximalists who accept most of the accounts as historical.
The portraits of Jesus have at times been unwitting reflections of the researchers themselves, and Crossan once quipped that some authors "do autobiography and call it biography". However, the study of historical Jesus has made one thing clear: there is so much to learn about Jesus that the more one looks, the more there is to discover.
From the bookshelf
In this book Maurice Casey not only draws on his special expertise in the Aramaic traditions and the Q source, but provides a comprehensive review of the various approaches to the historical Jesus.
Did you know...
- ... that in 1951 Christianity was the second largest religion in the world with 500 million followers, compared to 520 million Buddhists, but by 2013 it had gained the top spot with about 2.2 billion Christians?
Calendar
This month we celebrate the feasts of St Lawrence, St Bernard, and St Augustine.

Hi, Ed, I just read your great essay on Wiki drama and I posed a couple question on the Talk Page. I'm not sure how often people read the Talk Pages of essays but I'd welcome your thoughts, if you have time to share them. Thanks! NewJerseyLiz Let's Talk 21:30, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
Help:Templates and lists
Hello,
Would you please clarify for me whether you think it is necessary to retain Help:Templates and lists, which you created in 2005? If not, and since you're the primary contributor to the page, I wonder whether you'd object to its deletion under CSD G7. My reason for wanting it deleted is that the page's advice contradicts current template guidelines, which state that the text of articles and lists should not be transcluded and that templates should not be used to generate lists of links.
Thank you, -- Black Falcon (talk) 21:37, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
- Not necessary at all. A lot has changed in 7 or 8 years. Thanks for keeping me in the loop. --Uncle Ed (talk) 23:29, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
- Naturally, and thanks for responding. I've deleted the page. Best, -- Black Falcon (talk) 21:24, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
An essay that you wrote a very, very long time ago
Hi again Ed, while doing some more wiki-archaeology, I stumbled upon the old "Annoying users/Problem users/Conflicts between users" pages that you set up back in October 2002, and restored some old edits to them (along with their talk pages). I also noticed that you had written an accompanying essay, Wikipedia:Arguments, which was later deleted as a "rant". Unfortunately, the deletion archive was cleared after that page was removed, so it was even inaccessible to admins. I've imported it from the May 2003 database dump and userfied it to User:Ed Poor/Arguments, primarily because it was prominently mentioned at the "Annoying users" page from December 2002 (when you wrote it) until May 2003. I don't think it belongs in the Wikipedia namespace (especially not these days), but I also don't think people should have to fiddle around with database dumps to find out what it said, so that's why I put it in your userspace. Hope you don't mind. Graham87 14:45, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
Breast implant WP:ALLEGED problem
Hello. There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you.
I probably should have involved you earlier. --Nbauman (talk) 16:33, 25 September 2013 (UTC)
Breast implant
Ed, could you take a look at the Breast implant page, particularly Breast_implant#Alleged_complications? I tried to edit it in accordance with your recommendations at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Breast_implant#Alleged_health_risks , but Taylornate reverted it https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Breast_implant&diff=574293778&oldid=574202655 I'd like your input. --Nbauman (talk) 02:11, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
Verizon FiOS Page
Hi Ed. I noticed you commented on the Verizon FiOS talk page a few years ago. I am currently working on a school project on Verizon FiOS and editing the Wikipedia page. I was wondering if you could provide my group with some assistance. I like the idea about comparing FiOS to other services. What services do you think would be best to compare Verizon FiOS to? How do you think we should portray other companies? Do you have any information about that? Please respond either way if you do or don't. And if possible, respond to the talk page of Verizon FiOS. We appreciate your help! Andrew.prafder (talk) 22:06, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for September 29
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Unsafe at Any Speed, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page New Republic (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

An invitation
Hello Ed Poor, thank you for your vast contributions. I have started something I am calling the Wikipedia:Neutrality cabal. I am contacting you because you are an active editor who is listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Neutrality. It is my hypothesis that a re-branded "WikiProject" that is more "edgy" and decentralized could prove to be more successful than a structured WikiProject model when tackling this area. I've already gotten a real-life friend to sign up, and you might know how hard that is to get people to participate on this medium. I invite you to sign up/participate so that we can hopefully collaborate, build camaraderie, and improve the encyclopedia. Best regards. Biosthmors (talk) pls notify me (i.e. {{U}}) while signing a reply, thx 17:07, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
- Sounds interesting. I'll take a look. My chief interest is in countering anti-neutrality efforts which work by falsely branding neutral editors as tendentious. --Uncle Ed (talk) 12:09, 14 October 2013 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Richard Helm
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Richard Helm requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Wlmg (talk) 13:55, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

"apparently there has been only one Easter Crisis in the history of Denmark"
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Easter_Crisis&diff=582065225&oldid=582064865
Where in the world did you get that idea from? Are you saying that because something isn't mentioned in the article history of Denmark, then it doesn't exist? Did you even consider using other sources than Wikipedia? Please consider doing minimal research before changing stuff. Thue (talk) 17:16, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

Altered speedy deletion rationale: Afa marbella
Hello Ed Poor. I am just letting you know that I deleted Afa marbella, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, under a different criterion from the one you provided, which doesn't fit the page in question. Thank you. —Darkwind (talk) 22:53, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

Storage pool
Was there anything grossly improper about the hatnote I attempted to add to the Spent fuel pool article here, given that the redirect from "storage pool" did exist at the time I made that edit? (It was deleted by another user shortly after you removed the hatnote. I feel that the deletion was a misused CSD criterion, but that's another discussion.)
I admit, I've bungled up the interpretation of the hatnote guidelines on quite a few occasions, and this is probably another one of them. I guess what I'm asking for is, are there any minor essays I could read up on to sharpen my understanding of how the hatnote guidelines are applied in practice? --SoledadKabocha (talk) 20:02, 27 December 2013 (UTC)
- I've been informed that the deletion was in error. That doesn't change the fact that the confusion between "storage pool" and "storage pool disease" isn't entirely plausible, which weighs against the suitability of the hatnote (sorry for wasting your time, but I wanted to talk it out). --SoledadKabocha (talk) 04:26, 28 December 2013 (UTC)
- No, you didn't waste my time. If you feel the hat note is needed, please go ahead and make sure it gets put in. Thanks for your careful attention to this matter and your patience with me. :-) --Uncle Ed (talk) 19:33, 31 December 2013 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Pride 2014
Hi Ed. In case you are not aware, there is an upcoming campaign to improve coverage of LGBT-related topics on Wikipedia, culminating with an international edit-a-thon on June 21. See Wiki Loves Pride 2014 for more information. If you are interested, you might consider creating a page for a major city (or cities!) near you, with a list of LGBT-related articles that need to be created or improved. This would be a tremendous help to Wikipedia and coverage of LGBT culture and history. Thanks for your consideration, and please let me know if you have any questions! --Another Believer (Talk) 18:02, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

Personal infoboxes in relation to patriotism and nationalism
Hi ,Ed Poor
I saw your name on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Discrimination#Participants listing.
There is a discussion at Template talk:Infobox person#Citizenship suggesting a change of emphasis to a Citizenship entry from the Nationality entry.
The idea is to give more facilitation to Patriotism instead of Nationalism and also to allow more freedom of expression in regards to terminologies used.
Contributions are welcomed but may be worth checking last edit to check progress first :) Regards Gregkaye (talk) 21:11, 31 August 2014 (UTC)

Pursuant to the discussion at Talk:Atonement#Reorganize, I have created this draft. The topic is a pretty clear WP:DABCONCEPT to me, and I am sure that if everyone pitched in a little, we could shortly have a fine article - perhaps with less effort than was put into the initial discussion itself. bd2412 T 19:36, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
