New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020

Hello Dusti,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

2023 AHS reversion

I apologize for the disturbance but:

Whack!
You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know you did something silly.

The IP you reverted at 2023 Atlantic hurricane season was putting the page back into its original state after another IP put in incorrect info. ✶Mitch199811 14:36, 24 July 2023 (UTC)

I'm not a huge fan of fish.... but thank you! I noticed it when they reverted me again (or someone did) - and I left it alone. Dusti*Let's talk!* 14:37, 24 July 2023 (UTC)

Edit on Sundi Page

@Dusti brother. Actually I don't you how to aad edit summary. Please can you do it from my side. I'll provide you with the reason. It was not by mistake. Please listen to me I've many things to say. I'm new here Raj Hanse (talk) 14:47, 24 July 2023 (UTC)

Concerning your AIV report

The report you made at WP:AIV is a bit concerning. You provided 20 diffs showing examples of vandalism, which is a lot, but I loaded the first three to see what was going on and I'm very confused by what I'm seeing. Keeping WP:VANDTYPES in mind, would you mind explaining how removing a redlink, adding an acute accent to a letter to correct a name to match the person's article, or removing a blank line are vandalism? Even diffs that change names don't appear on their face to be vandalism; team lineups change, and indeed appear to be supported by sources. Can you please elaborate on this? - Aoidh (talk) 15:45, 24 July 2023 (UTC)

Hey Aoidh - I'm not sure what happened there - I didn't intend to report them, or add 20 diffs. When that screen popped up I thought I backed out of it... I'm just getting back into the swing of things with Huggle - I apologize! Dusti*Let's talk!* 16:32, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
Ah, okay. No worries then. I've misclicked many a thing myself (even today). I just wanted to see what was going on there because those diffs being characterized as vandalism was concerning, but that explanation makes perfect sense, thanks. - Aoidh (talk) 17:23, 24 July 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Dusti,

I think in your closure statement, you meant no Delete votes, not no Keep votes. Liz Read! Talk! 05:56, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

wp:burden

You made a mistake. Please follow wp:burden, which you have violated on a number of articles recently. And please do not accuse editors of "not adequately explaining why," when in fact they clearly do so. Kindly revert. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:78C5:AFFA:B66B:25D2 (talk) 18:58, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi Dusty - I sit on the chapter of Blackburn Cathedral. We are leasing the lady chapel to Capel Noddfa on Sundays for worship. Please can you re-instate

hi 2A00:23C5:E934:5501:6C43:C725:8317:C29A (talk) 22:32, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

I don't see any encyclopedic merit to the fact that the chapel is being leased out for worship services. You can discuss it on the talk page to see if others feel that it should be included. Dusti*Let's talk!* 00:44, 26 July 2023 (UTC)

AFDs

Hello, Dusti,

I can see that you are an eager editor but please do not close or relist AFD discussions 10 or 12 hours early. There is no real good reason not to provide editors with a full week to comment on a deletion discussion. It would be okay to close a deletion discussion an hour or so early if there is not an active discussion but not a half-day early. Also sometimes it is good not to relist a discussion when its 7 days "expires" as we have admins who specifically handle older AFDs and they will miss seeing them if they are moved to today's log page.

We have had a problem in the past with NAC closures that are sometimes days early before a discussion is supposed to close so please do not contribute to this problem. Also, in your relisting comments, please do not "count" up votes as that creates an expectation among participants and the closer might come to a very different conclusion than the vote count implies. Also, some of your comments imply that you can carry out actions that, as a non-admin, you can not do. So, unless you want to go through an RFA, please do not make remarks that imply you will be taking administrative actions.

Thank you for all of your contributions on the project. They are appreciated! Liz Read! Talk! 21:42, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

Hey Liz! Thanks for the message. I use XFDCloser and have been closing AFD's that are blueish-green, indicating they're over 7 days old (and I look a the nominators statement timestamp which usually says x:xx pm, 12 July 2023, Wednesday (15 days ago))... so I look for those that say 7 days ago.
As far as the comments implying that I can carry out admin actions, could you specify which ones? I apologize for that and will be more careful in the future. Dusti*Let's talk!* 22:25, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
Hello, Dusti,
I'm concerned that my words were discouraging to you as I haven't seen you helping out at AFD for quite a few days. But maybe you are just taking a summer break? I hope so.
As far as your question goes, they were just comments about how a discussion would be closed. AFDs are dynamic and can change even after several relistings so it's wise to avoid predicting the outcome unless the comments have been unanimous or near unaimous. I say this as reminder to myself as well. I just came across a relisting comment I made asking for a redirect target and then two editors showed up with strong Keep comments so it looks like a Redirect is less likely than when I relisted the discussion. Liz Read! Talk! 23:39, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
Hey Liz - no, not discouraging at all - I've just been away from work (I usually edit while I'm at work... great use of company time). Dusti*Let's talk!* 15:32, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi! I saw that you relisted Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nagendra Rai. Not a particularly controversial decision, and I don't personally object to it. However, when admins patrol closeable AfDs, they may close low-participation AfDs as a soft-delete as if it were a PROD (see WP:NOQUORUM). As a fellow WP:NACD, I have stayed away from relisting discussions that would be eligible for soft deletion, as it could be reasonably objected to along the lines of "an admin may have soft-deleted instead". Again, I'm not objecting to this particular relist, just giving you my two cents. Thanks for your work, and happy editing! :) Actualcpscm (talk) 18:25, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
