It's great to have you here!

[edit]

Hello Drew, and welcome! It's great to have you here. I got your message on my talk. I've taken a quick look at both of your new articles, and I'm very impressed with the high quality of your work. I'm also glad you are interested in the aquarium fish project. I have some ideas by way of responses to each of these things, and will reply specifically at the pages themselves. One comment I'll make here, though, is that we normally wait before nominating a page for Good Article until it has had some time to go through edits by multiple editors, so that nomination may be a bit premature. But you are off to a great start, and I want to encourage you as much as possible! --Tryptofish (talk) 15:42, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And, the new portal looks great! Good work, and thanks. --Tryptofish (talk) 17:04, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Add Taxobox for Emperor tetra

[edit]

thanks, i've looked at your articles. they're pretty good, but in Long-nosed Loach, i figure it would be easier if you moved the taxonomy section into the taxobox, and maybe get rid of the introduction section. in short, you should format it like the violet goby, that one's pretty impressive. keep up the good work! Naming

[edit]

Actually, I took a look at whatever naming conventions WP:AQF has, and there is no mention whatsoever of Latin names being preferred. All it does is refer back to WP:FISH's guidelines, which are explicitly favoring English (specifically the Fishbase English names), and adds some specific examples and explanations. Notably all the species examples on the WP:AQF page have English names, and up to just now, the only project I was aware where scientific names were used by default was WP:PLANTS. AFAIK, articles under WP:AQF's purview would follow the same common-sensical consensus applied to pretty much all the animal articles: use the English name unless no name exists or is widely agreed upon. I suggest you bring the issue up to WP:AQF. Circeus (talk) 22:06, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, if there is genuine confusion, then instead fo creating redirects willy-nilly, at least try to use disambiguation pages. FWIW, Fishbase does not list any english common name for Oxyurichthys visayanus. Sources based on ITIS have "purple arrowfin goby".Circeus (talk) 23:11, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Labels in fish stores are not typically considered reliable sources, which are what we use to determine what to title articles. Cf. Wikipedia:Verifiablity: "based upon reliable, third-party published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy." given your characterization of them, we can't exactly take them at face value, though we do often document these problems (e.g. Verbascum thapsus#Common_names). Circeus (talk) 23:39, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
My bad. After a while, these are, I'm afraid, answers that come as a reflex :-| Circeus (talk) 01:39, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your message about WP:AQF

[edit]

I appreciate what you're trying to do, to revive the project, but you must remember that contributing to Wikipedia is entirely voluntary and telling people you will remove them from a volunteer list seems a bit uncivil. My recommendation is that you shift known active members to a separate list, perhaps, called 'Current Taskforce' or something. At least then you can distinguish between active, and less active, members. But, I don't believe you can 'remove' a volunteer from anything. Good work on the portal, by the way, looks great! Violet goby book

[edit]

Got your message. Sorry, no, I looked through all the books I own and could not find anything about this species. (I did however see one in person at a pet shop yesterday. Quite an impressive beast! I can see how you would be interested in them.) --Tryptofish (talk) 16:51, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am interested in continuing to contribute to WP:AQF. I just need to balance that with the other Wikiprojects I participate in, as well as RL. Rlendog (talk) 17:10, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject Aquarium Fishes

[edit]

Drew, I am still willing to contribute to the project. However, it is currently only my 2nd-3rd priority.--Edward130603 (talk) 22:37, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

swine flu userbox

[edit]

That made me laugh. Thanks.  :-) Asbruckman (talk) 00:53, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not usually superstitious, but it felt like tempting fate to put up the box.  :-) I did join aquarium fish though! Asbruckman (talk) 01:09, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have kept fish for 20+ years, but that doesn't mean I know a durn thing.  :-) I keep it pretty simple... I'm happy if my ordinary tetras stay alive. I just did a bit of copy editing on the tetra article, since that was on the to-do list. (Not sure if I should take it off the list... probably could still use more polish.) I really have very little time, but it'll be fun to bop in now 'n then. Asbruckman (talk) 01:23, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the pint

[edit]

Thanks, that was very refreshing! Cheers! --Tryptofish (talk) 15:03, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OT discussions

[edit]

Please don't start OT discussions relating to your personal feelings about Mexicans and/or the NYT Nil Einne (talk) 04:10, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Regardless

[edit]

Your comment was still completely OT and irrelevant. What is clear is that they did not call them illegal aliens which was the right thing to do in this instance. Whether or not they normally do the right thing is again to make it clear irrelevant. Your original comment seems to suggest you think the NYT regularly runs articles which talk about where jobs are available in the US which tells Mexicans where to seek jobs. You are now claiming the opposite. Perhaps I misinterpreteted your comment. Perhaps you simply can't make up your mind or have now realised how offensive your comment was and so are trying to back away from it. Either way you probably should be clearer if you do want to make OT and irrelevant comments (or better yet, don't make them). In any case your comment remains OT and irrelevant. And BTW I didn't attack you. I simply pointed that your comment was silly, offensive, OT and irrelevant which it was in my eyes. Silly, offensive, OT and irrelevant comments are not welcome on article talk pages and cause numerous problems. I admit I shouldn't have made the comments in small writing but I couldn't resist it since your comment seemed so flawed since it seems highly unlikely to me Mexicans need the NYT to tell them where to go for jobs as you comment still seems to say to me (why else would you say that the articles they run cause Mexicans to seek those jobs?) Nil Einne (talk) 06:42, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

After rereading your comment several times and thinking carefully about it, I guess what you were intending to say was "they publish articles about how there's a lack of jobs in the US and eventually the article implies in some way that the reason there's no jobs is because Mexicans have taken them all". If this is the case then I apologise for my misunderstanding although I still feel the comment is very confusing. Regardless, I think it illustrates why OT and irrelevant comments are invariably a bad idea. The frequently lead to OT discussions sometimes based on confusion over what the comment meant and in no way go to improving the article Nil Einne (talk) 07:16, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't mean to be a dick about your swine flu picture, it's just that the other two look significantly more professional to me. I couldn't have made a picture as well as you did. ike9898 (talk) 21:01, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Updated DYK query On May 3, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Violet goby, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

DYK? advice

[edit]

Hello! Just some advice for next time. Develop the article in your own personal sandbox, then when you are SURE that it is ready, create the article in the mainspace. Then you can nominate the article on the day you put it in the mainspace, not the day you began work in your sandbox. :) Have a great day! CarpetCrawlermessage me 21:34, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WP:AQF

[edit]

Hello there, Drew R. Smith. Just want to say I am glad that you are planning to work on the Wikiproject Aquarium Fishes. Considering that I was the one who started the WP:AQF, it is a shame for me to say that that I have been mostly inactive during the last two years due to the busy real life. But I am still trying to help with minor editing and vandalism countering every once in a while, so please don't remove me from the member list yet. Hopefully, I will be able to find more free time to edit wikipedia more in the future.

Also, as a suggestion, perhaps it may be more practical (and polite) to separate the member list into "active member list" and "inactive member list", instead of simply deleting people. Some of them are (or were) highly knowledgeable individuals regarding AQF and contributed significantly to the project in the past. So, it is my opinion that their names should not be completely erased from WP:AQF. --Melanochromis (talk) 07:45, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The two lists and the new portal are great, Drew. And I am still reading the recent discussions of you and others at the QP:AQF talk page. It seems like there are a couple of things I have to catch up. LOL. About the newsletter, I was the one who manually posted it on members' talk pages for most of the issues, but another user volunteered to have his R Delivery Bot delivered it for the several last issues of the newsletter, which I think was very helpful. There are probably still some active bots of this kind somewhere, and you may want to ask them to help with the newsletter. Good Luck! --Melanochromis (talk) 08:12, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. I have made some adjustment to the newsletter|. Hopefully, this will help you prepare the next newsletter easier. May I also suggest you to avoid converting fish article from common names to scientific names, and vice versa, unless there is some prior agreement from other editors of the specific articles. The common names vs. scientific names problem have long been a sensitive issue in wikipedia, and you can see in many talk pages that this had brought up many long debates that remain somewhat unresolved to this date. But for the other parts, please continue your good works. --Melanochromis (talk) 08:35, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question - What can be done?

[edit]

Hi. I have some questions related to the below article. Article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_Murders_in_Prashanthi_Nilayam

  • This article was created by User:White_Adept whose account is now inactivated during the Sock Puppet investigation on the original account of: User:Dilip_Rajeev. He created this article with the material removed from the Sathya Sai Baba article on the grounds of Wikipedia:Libel and WP:BLP concerns.
  • Originally he created the article on April 4th 2009. The same day it was proposed to be deleted. This article was deleted as of April 8th 2009 on the grounds that it was not encyclopedic and the message also said don't recreate this article again with the same contents . The very same day User:White_Adept added it back. He is a POV pusher with no regards for wikipedia rules.
Unreliable and Banned Sources used in this article:

1) Source Priddy - banned in the second arbitration of the Sathya Sai Baba article. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Sathya_Sai_Baba_2#Robert_Priddy This article references following Priddy sources.

  • Analysis of 1993 Murders Discrepancies by Robert Priddy
  • Janakiramiah, Sai Baba’s blackmailing younger brother, Robert Priddy

2) Source Basava Premananda - Declared Unreliable in the BostonMA mediation discussion on Sathya Sai Baba in 2006. . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:BostonMA/Mediation This article references following Premanada Sources:

  • Analysis by Bhasava Premanand of the 1993 Murders
  • Investigate the Murder at Satya Sai Baba's Collage, The Indian Skeptic.May 1998.] Image of body as carried on Indian Skeptic( warning: graphic images ).

3) "The Findings" - This source was declared as unreliable in Boston MA mediation discussion in 2006. This article uses the following references from Findings:

  • The Findings. An investigative report and collection of incriminating testimony complied by The Baileys.
  • The Findings. Terry Gallagher - A Letter to the Baileys.
  • My question is can this article be deleted as it is based on unreliable and banned material from the Sathya Sai Baba article.
  • Is there a way to find the original deleted article as of April 8th 2009? Then will this article qualify for speedy deletion as it was already deleted once?. Please advice.

Thanks Drew. I sincerely appreciate your efforts with the Afd. I will also update Afd with my comments. Radiantenergy (talk) 22:36, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

[edit]

Hi, I got your reply that you wanted to adopt me. I read your User page. I have an aquarium too, mostly because my mom won't let me have a pet that's bigger than my fist or so, or that is expensive, or sheds, or poops all over the house, or needs to be exercised, or rips the curtains...so I have fish. I also have three hermit crabs, but I'm getting off-topic. Thanks for offering to adopt. I don't really have any idea where to start. My knowledge is pretty limited, but I love to edit for grammar and clean up articles, I just don't always know how. If you could give me some suggestions, that would be great. What movie are you watching? (It says at the top of the page that you are.) Stormcloud22 (talk) 14:40, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome page

[edit]

You have used up a great deal of time on the User:Drew R. Smith/Welcome page, but I kind of believe that Wikipedia:Introduction and Wikipedia:Tutorial do the trick.

Anyway, welcome to Wikipedia (a little late), I have been around 3 years here. Raaggio 19:11, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm...I see your point, but one of your other points was the longness. I think your suggestion kinda is very very long, while Wikipedia:Tutorial is much more simple. Maybe suggesting the tutorial page be pasted on everyone's talk page? If you still prefer your welcome page, then I will totally support it. Hey, I might help you. If you want me to collapse them into a neat box with Show/Hide function, I can do that around tomorrow afternoon. Raaggio 00:49, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

About Me

[edit]

I have six zebra danios, and I'm planning to get another type of fish too. I've had the tank for about five years. I can't give much personal info (my parents would freak). I plan on editing typos and cleaning up articles, but if I find a topic that I know about that hasn't been written about, I might do larger edits or create a page, if one needs creating. I would love to learn how to spice up my user page, thanks. I'm taking a course in computer programming next year, but as of right now, I know nothing about how to set up pages or anything like that. I don't think adopting is really a formal thing, I think once an adopter and an adoptee find each other on here, the adopter just answers any questions. Here's a prime opportunity! Last question, I promise. How do you get onto the Wikipedia IRC channel? I have no idea what that even means. I think it's like IM'ing, but I don't know if you need a special program to use it. This paragraph is really long, so I'll stop now. Bye!Stormcloud22 (talk) 00:47, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
