Bermingham Castles of Ireland

[edit]

Hi Dougbermingham

I see the page you created and edited on Bermingham Castles of Ireland (good work by the way with the photos etc, pretty thorough), has an indication that the text is from your own book (possibly unpublished). This can be a copyright problem for Wikipedia as there is no formal way to know that the book's author has given permission. And even doing so informally may not make it clear that you're happy with all the permissions you give away when you post to Wikipedia (e.g. that anyone can take your work and re-use it, even commercially without any furthr permission from you).

The good news is this is easily fixed if you have not e.g. assigned the rights to a publisher. I think you would need to donate the copyright to Wikipedia. A good start point is here Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.

Because I'm not sure precisely what needs to be done (the heavy-handed approach is to delete text which is suspected to have copyright problems, and I don't think that's appropriate as the article is clearly written in good faith), I've put a link on a page that flags copyright concerns: Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2011 November 1. Hopefully someone there can chip in with better advice. Tt 225 (talk) 00:32, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Mr. Bermingham. I'm an administrator who works copyright problems on Wikipedia, and I'm here to talk to you a bit about the issues here. I have blanked the article for now; I hope we'll be able to restore it soon. We just need to work out the copyright issues here.
First, can you please identify here who published your book and when? If you have the ISBN number, that would be handy. I have not yet been able to find any reference to this book. As Tt 225 notes, we need to work out whether you retain rights to license this content or if you have surrendered them to your publisher. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:03, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your clarification. Since you do not yet have a publisher, there's no concern that somebody else retains rights to any of the content, and since the book is not yet published the procedures for verifying are not necessary. I've restored the content. I have, however, removed the title of the book from the references. While we do appreciate your sharing your work, we are not able to cite your book at this point as it does not yet constitute a a reliable source; see WP:SOURCES. Certainly once it has found a home and been released, it may be appropriate to include. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 01:21, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Notification of automated file description generation

[edit]

Your upload of File:Athenry Castle side.jpg or contribution to its description is noted, and thanks (even if belatedly) for your contribution. In order to help make better use of the media, an attempt has been made by an automated process to identify and add certain information to the media's description page.

This notification is placed on your talk page because a bot has identified you either as the uploader of the file, or as a contributor to its metadata. It would be appreciated if you could carefully review the information the bot added. To opt out of these notifications, please follow the instructions here. Thanks!
