A recent article I was submitting for approval was rejected, could you help?

It's not too big a problem. Some bits you need to rewrite in the third person - the only place the words "you" and "your" should ever be seen in articles is in direct quotes.

The overall tone is a bit too informal - a couple of examples (my italics): "Touchcopy will retrieve music, photos, messages, apps, contacts, and much more." and "At this time, they brought TouchCopy into the limelight, and it effectively succeeded the former."

I would change to: "Touchcopy will retrieve music, photos, messages, apps, contacts and other user data." and "At this time TouchCopy became the new trademark."

Distance e-Learning

Hi - my article got declined because you said it's part of distance education. It is actually a cross between distance education and e-Learning. The article for e-Learning, however, was allowed. If I submit the article as Distance e-Learning in the Philippines, would you reconsider?

The Rowan Tree - why the snark?

The article created on "The Rowan Tree" was rejected because there is not yet enough sources to pass the review process. The first time it was rejected, I was told I needed a book review from a media source: I resubmitted as soon as I got one, and I will resubmit again if I get more.

What I don't understand is the "seriously?" and the side comment on my capability. If you check my history, most of my activity was from 2006 when anyone could start an article, and even stubs were published for the community to work on. At that time I got quite frustrated about revenge edits: bullies who followed me from a disputed page to other articles I'd edited. I don't have time for a second career on Wikipedia: since then the rare edits I've made are to help a friend of mine who is too old to understand Wikipedia. I regret even trying to help with this Rowan Tree article since when I dared to ask questions about improving the article, admins threatened my friend with banning unless he went through the hassle of verifying his identity via ID card scanning, faxing and using the obscure-to-any-normal-person Wikipedia talk system just because he managed to log in and make his own edit once (something I probably tried to teach him to do). I spent half a day on that, and I had to help my friend make a new account to "retire" the one with his own name on it! That was ludicrous. Yet I agreed to help my friend with his Wikipedia page, and I will see it through. However, I don't see why this should involve snark about the capabilities of people who don't spend their lives on Wikipedia: it's extremely unprofessional in an admin and you should recuse yourself from future reviews.

Ps. If you must know how I "seriously" managed to cover most of the technical features of a Book article: I copied the template for Brideshead Revisited and replaced the content with that of The Rowan Tree. That's a lot easier to understand than one of the overly verbose jargon-ridden Wikipedia "help" pages. Theano2 (talk) 04:56, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Reply About draft articles

Thank you for your message about grid references. I am surprised at you not being able to find this common form of grid reference in England, I did a quick search and it seemed to appear on Google with no problems at all. The SO letters refers to the county in England, in this example it would be Shropshire. And the 6 digit number shows the exact point on an ordnance survey map. I have supplied a link if you still don't quite understand it, as it explains it more clearly.

Thanks for getting back to me about this. Now that I know what it is, I found the article about it quite easily - Ordnance Survey National Grid. I think using a piped link in your articles to this article would be the ideal solution. Do it like this: "Grid reference: SO123456". Then curious readers (such as myself) can simply click on the link and learn something new. BTW the letters do not refer to a county - they designate the 500km squares. Looking through the list on your draft:

1 is the record company's website - not Independent (they want to sell the band's music so are not neutral commentators)

2 is a Wikipedia article - not Reliable (Wikipedia and all other user-edited websites such as Facebook, blogs, IMDB, Youtube, etc are not reliable because there is no editorial control and fact checking.

3 is IMDB - not Reliable

4 is the film company the band has/had a working relationship with - not Independent

5 is the BBC - this is a perfect example of what is meant by a mainstream media Reliable Independent source with editorial control.

6 is iTunes - a page marketing an EP by the band, all it proves is that the EP exists.

enquiry into possible COI user

I can assure you that I am not a promotional or tourist representive person for Shropshire, but I am merely writing about certain places which I feel should have a page on wikipedia due to their status as LNR, or SSSI, or because of a particular wildlife interest. I am planning to edit them later on when I have access to a up to date species list for the Shropshire county area, as all of these places are particularly interesting in terms of wildlife recorded there.

question about my rejected submission

Dear Dodger67,

I am new in Wikipedia editing (just started this morning), and my Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Elektronik Meditation submission was my first attempt. I am wondering how I could improve, to make the submission admitted. There aren't many books or online articles about them, but I have been to their concerts, and I have their CDs. The articles that exist about them online are written in Greek, so it would be rather difficult for me to prove their notability. I have not added any pictures of them yet, because anyone uploading pictures must have an account that is at least 4 days old, according to what I read in Wikipedia's rules, but I intend to. Furthermore, I am improving the page, but I am not sure how to re-submit it. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for me, I would appreciate it.

I hope this way of trying to communicate with you for advise is not considered improper.

We can easily find a reviewer who can read Greek if necessary. Don't worry about images now, the "decorations" can wait until after we get the basic text right. Don't resubmit, seriously - just add your information to the existing article. If your draft was a long comprehensive article I would say yes make this a separate page but as it is a short stub it would be better added to the already existing section in the page about the organisation - see WP:Content forking. Merging your draft into The Jerusalem Post would add only a few dozen words to it. The Jerusalem Post is a mature, short-medium length article, adding a few more words won't break it. I concur, and to be blunt, the draft reads like spam. "The leading Israeli news website in the English language"? Funny how Haaretz.com makes virtually the same claim. "Considered one of the top sources for online news from Israel and the Middle East"? By whom? Source, please? Speaking of which, Alexa is not significant coverage; some reliable third-party sources that cover JPost in some detail would definitely be necessary for a stand-alone article. I've taken a look at it, the "advertising tone" problem pointed out by "Bonkers" looks like it has been taken care of; your list of sources look like quality publications so I'd guess that once you've converted them to inline refs it would probably be ready to go - as long as your references stand up to scrutiny i.e. directly support each of the claims they are appended to. If you write "The sea is salty.(ref)The book of the sea by Nep Tune, Page 1(ref)" - then there must be a statement about the salt content of the sea on page one of the book. AfC: Food Photographer of The Year Award

Dear Roger,

Thanks for taking a look at the revised version of this page. I note your comments about the article "lacking context", and I hope to give a little context about that here! I would really appreciate any help you can give me.

When I wrote the entry I was aware that the Food Photographer of The Year Award is, in common with some of the other competitions and awards listed on Wikipedia, ultimately a commercial entity, and one sponsored by a commercial brand (in this case Pink Lady Apples). You ask:

"Does it have a specific distinctive name such as "The <Organisation> Food Photographer of the Year Award"? These things don't just fall out of the clear blue sky for no reason at all."

I didn't think the sponsors should have any publicity from the entry, and so I knowingly omitted those details. In so doing, I've made the article unsatisfying for you. My concern now is that listing the award's sponsors will cause the article to be rejected for undue commercialism, and the only way back from that would be to actively delete mention of the sponsors, which, to me, is more likely to raise further, separate objection.

My confusion is this: the official name for the Indy 500 motor race is the Izod Indycar Indianapolis 500, where the sponsor is Izod and the organiser is IndyCar - but the Wiki entry for the Indy 500 omits to mention either the sponsor or the (very, very commercial!) company behind it, and I thought that was the correct form on Wikipedia generally.

The Food Photographer award has established itself (5000+ entrants last year from 140 countries, from memory) so I figured it would be deemed notable enough to be included without mentioned the sponsors, and previous admins/reviewers have agreed with that. I'm not sure what I should do next.

The way I understand it the phrase "Food Photographer of the Year Award" is rather "generic" - how many awards for taking pics of food are awarded globally, probably dozens - every other food and lifestyle magazine has one. The "Indy 500" doesn't have the same problem because the phrase is unique and distinctive - there is only one "Indy 500". I believe your concerns about mentioning sponsors, for the purpose of distinguishing this particular award from others in the same genre, are not really warranted - simply naming the sponsor is miles away from saying "the award is courtesy of the awesome wonderful sponsors, Pink Lady Apples". We do after all have thousands of articles about companies - most manage not to fall foul of the "no advertising" rule by simply sticking to the dry facts without decorative adjectives. If the title is the issue, then I can simply rename it "Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year Award"That said, my personal preference would be to leave the sponsor out of the article's title (sponsors come and go - Indy 500 has had tons of them!) while mentioning the sponsor early on, like so:

"The Award is presented by its title sponsor Pink Lady Apples, and was devised by the Food Awards Company Ltd."

If this latter approach works for you then it definitely works for me. I'll resubmit now with the latter version in mind.

One last thing: Google strongly suggests (to me anyway) that there isn't a host of clone awards jostling under the generic name of "Food Photographer of The Year- I can find only the one we're talking about here, certainly within the first few scores of results pages (after which I gave up). I agree with you that it sounds a generic name, but, surprisingly, a thorough search doesn't turn up any generic competitors. In that case, remove all the "how to" from your draft, check that the language is purely descriptive and not promotional. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, use the words "you" and "your". Write "a phone", not "your phone" - "can be downloaded", not "you can download". Keep in mind too that the Samsung Kies article is only rated "Start class" so it's not a good example to follow in all respects. Hope this helps. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:30, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

Contest to speedy deletion of "Sandy Hook Principles"

My article was rejected on the grounds of copyright infringement, because the text appeared word for word at this site: http://organizerbrittanyborden.nationbuilder.com/philadelphia_issues_sandyhook.

However, I cannot change the language of my article because my article is based on a Gun Reform Initiative by United States Conference of Mayors. In order to report it truthfully, I must have the exact language of the entire document. It would be like trying to describe the Constitution without including quotes or excerpts simply because they appear elsewhere on the Internet. Is there someway to get around this copyright infringement? The initiative is public domain, and it doesn't "belong" to anyone, including the owner of organizerbrittanyborden.nationbuilder.com.

I simply want to create an article on this great new initiative. I am willing to format my article in an other fashion. For example, I can create a description of the Principles and then link the official USCM document. Please let me know how to proceed.

You recently declined my first attempt at a wikipedia article. I had gone back and added more references to the article. You indicated that the references I have on the article may not be reliable. The references I have for the core content of the article are from Human Rights Watch, the US State Department, Amnesty International, and the official web site of the party (also many links to other Wikipedia Articles). Can you please give me a little bit more specific feedback on exactly where the article is lacking references.

The referencing is very much improved, it looks ok to me now. Please try to change the lists of brief points into paragraphs of running prose - instead of:

• Attended high school at Kokebe Tsi­bah School in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. [5]
• Earned a highly competitive scholarship to one of the premier high schools in the country, Saint Joseph High School.[5]
• Grad­u­ated from Addis Ababa Uni­ver­sity with a B.A. in history.[5]

Rather say:

The "(2)" is appended to the draft because it is the second draft with the same title to be submitted - the first one was recently deleted as abandoned. The title will be corrected when it is approved and moved into mainspace. BTW the provisional categories you have appended do not exist, that's why they are redlinks - but don't worry about that now, it will also be fixed when the article is accepted.

I'm afraid that article has the same problem - I will now nominate it for deletion. (Your draft is safe from such delition while it is still at Articles for creation, but once an article is in "mainspace" there is no tollerance for such problems. All articles must prove the WP:Notability of the subject by showing that independent and reliable sources have written about it. Basically if the church has never featured in the mainstream news media or magazines (published by people who have no connection to the church) it does not qualify for an article on the English Wikipedia. Hi David, it's unfortunate about Techatology - we're having a bit of a problem with "screening" new reviewers and a few unsuitable ones got involved just as we started a "backlog drive". However you don't really need to worry about that - there are enough reviewers around to help you further. You can simply resubmit - there is a button in the previous (pink) review template and someone will review it again, it might be me, it might be someone else.

The main problem the draft has is a complete lack of independent sources - look for articles in trade magazines and other media. I see you have some listed under "External links", rather use some of those as direct sources for the article - an external links list should in any case contain only a few of the most important links. If you can add some of the history of the development of the system and perhaps discuss actual applications (instead of just lists of acronyms) the article would also look less like a marketing brochure. Lose the "licences" section - that's straight advertising. Try to think of the article as if it would be read a hundred years from now - when the system is no longer current, then keep only those parts that the industrial historian of 2128 would find relevant. The links that the maintenance note is referring to are the external links that are embedded within the article text, they should be changed into references. See this edit] where I made the change to one of them. Wikipedia articles should not contain external links located within the article text. I managed to find most of your proposed categories, although some of the universites don't have categories - probably becase there aren't yet many articles related to them. Categories can be difficult, they refuse to turn blue unless you have the exact title correct. What I do if I'm not sure what category I need is to look at higher level categories and try to follow the subcategories until I get to one that fits best. No it has nothing to do with "higher ranks" as I don't have any such at all - I'm just an ordinary editor like you. The problem is simply that adding categories is not easy, anyone is allowed to do it but getting it right is difficult. It takes experience, (learning through doing, or "self capacitation") not rank. A simple example - you tried to add "Category:Social Psychology" and it didn't work, but if you change it to "Category:Social psychology" it works. Titles of pages, categories, etc must be exactly correct for links to work, a single comma or capital letter out of place breaks it. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 13:20, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Hello, Roger: you will see that Clodomir Morais now has a well-nourished “Categories” section. However, I remain a bit non-plussed about the Service Note re: This article's use of external links may not follow Wikipedia's policies or guidelines. Please improve this article by removing excessive or inappropriate external links, and converting useful links where appropriate into footnote references. (August 2013). The present 108 notes do indeed come across as ‘excessive’ – however, each of those notes, most of which refer back to the Bibliography section, was put in there for a reason in the first place and, being myself the author, I cannot make up my mind which of the 108 is more and which less important (and could therefore be eliminated as ‘excessive’). To tell you the truth I feel a bit as a mother hen about each one of those 108. So could you please enlighten me by giving a couple of examples of excessive and/or inappropriate links? Hi again! It's not the references that are the problem - it's actually a few external links within the text that are not references that are a problem. The only place such external links should be is in the external links list - which should contain only a few directly relevant links; all the rest should be references.

Examples in the "1964-1988" section - there is "National Agrarian Institute (INA) of Honduras" with "INA" as a link to the institute's website. A bit further down the word "Bataan" is also linked to an external site. These are the links that must be removed or converted to references. Basically all "blue words" in the main text of an article must be links to other wikipedia pages - they should not go to other websites. The "Bataán" link should be to Wikipedia's article about the place, if it exists - the link that is there now should be a reference.

A few more I have noticed are "INSCOOP" and "PROCCARA" - they should be changed to references -you might like to format them as wikilinks to create WP:Redlinks like this: INSCOOP and PROCCARA which will "go blue" when the articles about those organisations are written. Redlinks remind us that there are still many missing articles - we currently have less than 4.5 million articles so there's still lots of work to be done.

It is in the queue to be reviewed, however I will not be doing the next review because if the same reviewer always reviews the same draft then the reviewer's biases may influence the article.

I have taken a look at the draft - you have done nothing to fix the problem I pointed out in the review I did. Patents are of absolutely no use at all as references to establish WP:Notability.

He most definitely has self identified as an atheist - see the second-last paragraph in the "2000-present" section. Someone reverted me citing a consensus on the talk page, but that consensus itself dates from before the directly quoted statement in the paragraph - which was published on 7 August 2011. I was concerned that an edit war was imminent, and I thought it might be useful to suggest a third option. In the second to last paragraph, I'm not seeing that he self-identifies as an atheist per se; rather, I'm seeing that he has made somewhat contradictory statements that could variously be interpreted either way. Assuming the more recent statement nullifies the earlier one, then it sounds a lot like atheism, but (1) I don't think we can assume that and (2) I think it's still a bit of a leap to put the atheist label on him (just as it would be a leap to label him a deist if he hadn't made the later statement). Thresholds for a possible reviewer right are not supposed to be being discussed on that RfC yet. That said, Autopatroller would be ridiculously high. FWIW, Autopatrolled has no advantaged for the user. It just relieves the New Page Patrollers of some work, although some hat collectors mistakenly see it as an award for creations. Seeing as person is on wiki registered thought best to add to article such user and category information relevant to Damon Matthew Wise. In respect of me, yeah Dyslexia is a disability - while I self-identify with some issues in the spectrum (have not been proposed or officially dx'd with an autistic spectrum disorder ["yet"]), not entirely sure 3rd one relevant to me - but all are relevant and specific to the subject and the article.

If not appropriate to the subject and context (as documented, how would be attached to his wikimedia page instead ... do they have similar tags/categories?

The issue is basically that you are not maintaining the separation between the article you are writing and yourself as a Wikipedia editor. Categories that are relevant to you as a Wikipedia editor are not relevant to the biographical article about a person that you are writing. This is one of the reasons why writing about yourself is so strongly advised against against. Your User page is where you put categories and templates that are about you as a wikipedia editor. Granted - but these _ARE_ relevant to the subject of the article, and not all relevant to me - my disability and his are not the same - in respect on the piece a number of us are working on in sandbox of his article the ":Category:Wikipedians with autism" applied to him and NOT me - it may apply to me down the road, but the categories for me and him are not the same.

If there is a category for Wikipedians with Dyslexia, sure that would be me - he has been on record as having highlighted for dyslexia, but because of multilingual education, and likely coping mechanisms never hit all the markers for diagnosis at anyone time to get a diagnosis.

Several people have wrongly identified ME as being one of the Aspies and not the subject of the article as founder of the Aspies concept and movement because I use the style and language of people I am volunteering with through On-Line and home-based support in Ireland - and am adamant, although I self-identify and relate to the issues they have, I have never been suggested or diagnosed with any such label. Several intelligent-related diagnosis, like Dyslexia may be common and occur often with Asperger's and such and develop similar communication and coping mechanism, but that as they say is "a completely different kettle of fish"!

Dyslexia falls in the category of what they call "Cousins" - not an Asperger's or autism diagnosis but connected and common co-morbidity and co-existent condition that sometimes is present as part of a mix of learning and developmental delays and many other different diagnosis at the same time. You are missing the main point - those templates and categories are relevant only to Wikipedia Users, they do not belong on the Article about Damon Matthew Wise. Nothing about any Wikipedia editor should ever appear in an Article. The templates I removed from the draft are not Subject templates and categories, they are User templates and categories. It's actually quite simple - a category that starts with the word "User" is meant to be used on a Wikipedia editor's User page. Categories for articles don't start with "User". In the Article about Wise you would add Category:People with Asperger syndrome. Other similar categories for a variety of disabilities and conditions can be found under Category:People with disabilities. The fact that Wise is also a Wikipedia editor has absolutely no relevance at all to the Article about him - that is a "wall" we are never allowed to break through. I've fixed the referencing and the section headings for you.

The article needs a few links to other articles - for example where it mentions "MIT Media Lab" you add double square brackets like this [[MIT Media Lab]] which creates a link to the MIT Media Lab article. There are many things and a few places and people mentioned in the text that have articles you can link, just don't link the same thing twice. If the phrase or word in the article doesn't match the article title you use a piped link like this - [[Minority Report (film)|Minority Report]] will link the title "Minority Report" to the Minority Report (film) article, like this - Minority Report.

Eland Mk7

Hi Roger,

As you may have noticed, your nomination of the Eland Mk7 article for B-status has been approved by User:Sturmvogel 66. As you have done some commendable research on your own and may have access to more extensive SA sources on the subject, are there any factual nitpicks with the article that might need further clarification? Perhaps something that conflicts with your facts (ie, ammunition storage or that diesel engine)? Being quite uncertain on a few things myself, I'm more than willing to listen.

Hi, from what Icould find out - by talking to people who actually used the Eland in service (so not RS but actually very reliable) the locally made petrol engine it received in the late 70s was a General Motors 2.5lit petrol engine (GM has a factory in SA). Some of the technicians used to "liberate" Eland engine spares for their own GM vehicles. When The Eland (Mk7) was replaced by Rooikat in the SA Army it still had that engine. It is only the Elands exported after 1990 that got the diesel (a Perkins engine made under licence by Atlantis Diesel Engines) - the Mk7DT never served in the SA Army.

As far as ammo is concerned the Eland 90 carried 29 rounds of 90mm ammo while the 60 carried 56 mortar bombs.

According to some of the veterans I've spoken to illumination and smoke bombs were very popular as the Eland 60 provided lighting for night actions and smoke cover for daytime actions. HE bombs were not as popular because the Eland 60 mortar was not as accurate as the infantry mortar firmly placed on solid ground.

BTW the article should not be named "Eland Mk7" because it is in fact about all the versions, I think it should be moved to "Eland (armoured car)". Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:01, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the information, as this clearly demonstrates how similar sources on a topic may be at odds. I spoke to a Rhodesian vet from Bloem who was an Eland gunner the last two years of the bush war, and he recalled that their '90s could only carry 21 rounds of ammunition (the same as the Panhard AML). When I mentioned the 29 rounds figure, he asked where the additional 8 could possibly be stored in such a small hull. This gives me the impression that those things weren't designed to carry 29, but perhaps some individual SADF crews may have found a way by rearranging/stripping down the interior.

I take it that the GM was the "South African" engine installed in the Mk5s. The information about the diesel motor roughly corresponds to what I suspected, but I understand that when the Mk7 was released there were already plans to include one. Have you heard anything on that angle?

I disagree with your reversion of my MOSNUM edit. The version you restored makes the reader think the link leads to a different guideline, with a different context. When the reader finds himself in a guideline section, the reader will have to navigate to the top of the guideline to figure out the overall topic of the guideline, only to find he is still in the same guideline he started from. I don't think you know that administrators are the only one who can protect a page, and I'm not an administrator. So tell me how on earth have I protected that page? SAAF Grippens

Roger, their maintenance contracts have not been renewed, so I can't see how they will be "rotating" the airframes. The SAAF is doing damage control by stating they are being "rotated." The international press has no domestic political agenda. Only eight pilots current on the jets - I would go with the international report from one of the most authoritative airforce journals rather than a domestic DefenceWeb report that has local allegiances! It's sad news.... But it's reality. Same for the Oryx's no longer being available for South Africa's obligatory search and rescue service because their limited flying hours are now being consumed transporting VIP's (I.e president) not saving lives. Words of the international press... Not mine!

The point is no Gripens have been wrapped in plastic and grease and locked away - all are being used though not at the same time. I trust Defenceweb far more than any general news source, foreign or local and about SA defence news I trust it before foreign sources. The people who write for defenceweb are subject specialists - the overwhelming majority of general news journos don't know the difference between an MBT and an APC. Mothballing planes is vastly more expensive than using them at a decreased rate. If you read the DefenceWeb article I linked you will see how is specifically explains that the original report was incorrect - it was a statement by the hoplessly cluless MOD which was subsequently corrected by someone from the SAAF who knows the actual "on the ground" situation. Hello Dodger67 -- I've been adjusting the article on David G. Benner and hope you will take off its two remaining tags. You moved the article to mainspace and have been guiding its progress. The career section needed citations. I'd misread a DGG advice posting about CVs and put none in, but there are now twelve or so. Also, your comment on a talk page was that this article's references weren't succinct. Streamlining comes next, then, still with Chicago 15th but tighter. Second, the article was an orphan but has four new backlinks. One WP guideline said at least one incoming link is needed to de-orphanize but four to six is better. I found more possibles, but formatting was tricky. Perhaps you or another editor would be kind enough (and familiar enough with the list-formatting) to add "David G. Benner, psychologist and author" as a back-link entry to this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_McMaster_University_people/. I fixed the spelling problem by creating a redirect for the Commonwealth spelling to the American version - per WP:ENGVAR. I see the Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow is already a GA, are you planning on taking it all the way to FA? Individuals who were founding members are still active in disability rights in the UK in general, and so Ann Rae, who you saw mention of on the page I'm trying to create, is active as a disability rights speaker, and gives support to the group I was writing about, but that is a different thing. Feedback from Article "Child Lying"

Hello Roger,

Thank you very much for your feedback. I do not find the "Background" section redundant because I only briefly mention the topics from the larger articles. It supplements the main premise of my article. Readers can also click on the main articles if they wish to have a more comprehensive understanding of the particular topic.

"Child Lying" is the most clear and precise title I can make for the article. Unfortunately there is not a more expansive way to explain the phenomenon without becoming verbose. The very first sentence of my article adequately describes what "Child lying" is.
