Information icon Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Etta Hulme. I noticed that when you added the image to the infobox, you added it as a thumbnail. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks! Thank you Zackmann08. I appreciate the help. This was my first ever attempt at adding an image to a page. I was actually in the process of trying to fix the error when I got your message. Again, thanks for the tips! Doddsam09 (talk) 17:50, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

All part of the learning process. :-) Keep up the good work. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:01, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi and thanks for the welcome! Definitely count me in for your Edit-a-thon this spring. I'm looking forward to it! SaturdayLibrarian (talk) 15:31, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DFW Wikiactivity

[edit]

Just FYI, there are regular edit-a-thons at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, where I'm the Wikipedian-in-Residence. The EAT page and schedule is here. There's also going to be a Feminism+Art EAT at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library of the Dallas Public Library on March 3, 2018, from 10a-5p (or 11-5, sources vary) and here's a Facebook page on that. Kudos to you for doing one at UTA as well! If you need a cheatsheet for your EAT, feel free to use mine (which is focused on using the code editor, not the Visual Editor) which I use to teach editing at those EAT's. If I can help some other way, please feel free to let me know. Best regards, TransporterMan (TALK) 20:12, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for your response. I am so excited to learn that there is another wikipedian-in-residence so close by. I would love to get together if you have some time to pick your brain about events and programming. Thanks for the tips and cheat sheet. Looking forward to working with you! A kitten for you!

Congratulations on your first article and first DYK nomination!

The article looked quite good to me; I did copyedit it and made a number of edits. I was even able to add relevant links to Wikisource and Wiktionary! There were a few phrases ("fallen women", "redemption and support", and "erring girls") that I presumed to be direct quotes and thus put in quotation marks, but I'd appreciate if you can double check the sources for them to make sure they are indeed direct quotes. If not, it would probably be best to "tone down" the language a bit to make the article more neutral; I've already done this with other phrases, such as transforming "work on rescuing the souls of these fallen women" to "work ministering to these 'fallen women'" and "combat the social evil of fallen women" to "address this social issue". NPOV may still be a little bit of an issue, but I think that it is under control; it kind of comes with the territory with articles about gender roles/expectations and women's agency (or lack thereof), especially in historical contexts, as I'm sure you're well aware. Similarly, I'd recommend double checking all my edits just to make sure that I haven't accidentally changed the meaning or altered the context of something.

Also, I uploaded a JPG version of the image to Commons and created a crop of it that I've now used in place of the TIF original in the article and DYK nomination. This makes the image look a little better in the article and especially in the hook, where simpler and clearer is always better. Having your image selected for the DYK hook is quite an honor and one that is frankly hard to get; I wouldn't expect it, but going with the cropped version will increase your chances.

I think that everything is now in order with this nomination. At this point, it will just be waiting to see when the nomination is formally approved and added to the DYK queue, which could take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of weeks. I've watchlisted the nomination, and would recommend that you do the same. It will probably be a few days between the nomination's hook being added to the DYK queue and it actually running on the main page.

Thanks so much for creating this article! I'm very excited to see it in Wikipedia now, and I'll be even more excited when it runs on the main page! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. All the best! Michael Barera (talk) 02:02, 21 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much Michael Barera for walking me through this process and helping me get it going. I see some others have also already started to edit and add more info the the article! So exciting to see how fast it can all happen. Regarding the terminiology I used in the article. "Erring girls", "fallen women" were all used in pretty much every resource I consulted about the home. I could add a citation to the first time I used each term if you think that would be helpful, I could pick any of the journal articles, or thesis and cite a page where they say "erring girls" and "fallen women." I have also found a few more articles in Southwestern Historical Quarterly that use those terms as well. I guess I didn't cite it the originally because in my head it was so much a quote as it was just the language the authors used when they talked about the home and the women. I'm happy to make any changes you think might help it with NPOV. Again, I can't thank you enough. Doddsam09 (talk) 12:59, 21 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am most happy to help, Samantha! Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to assist with this article.
Also, a quick tip on talk pages: when responding to a post, you can use a colon (:) to offset your response, and then two colons (::) for the response to the response (like what I'm writing here); it might sound confusing, but this practice of offseting makes talk pages easier to read at a glance. Check out the raw code of this thread to see exactly what I mean. And as always, please let me know if this, or anything else I've tried to explain, doesn't make sense. Happy editing! I've just caught up on the DYK nomination discussion over the last couple of days, and I'd like to say that with the hooks, the idea is to be as interesting or "catchy" as possible. Admittedly, this is easier for some successful DYK nominations than for others. If you'd like my assistance or perspective on anything particular with this nomination, please let me know. It looks like the chronology might be a bit confusing. Michael Barera (talk) 03:25, 27 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations on your DYK nomination being promoted and added to the queue!

[edit]

Congratulations on your DYK nomination of Berachah Industrial Home for the Redemption of Erring Girls being promoted and added to the queue, Samantha! I'm guessing it will run late in the day next Wedesday, April 25, but be sure to keep your eye on the queue to see when exactly it will be on the mainpage. Once again, congratulations, and be sure to enjoy seeing your hard work on the mainpage! Michael Barera (talk) 16:07, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Berachah Industrial Home for the Redemption of Erring Girls

[edit]

On 26 April 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Berachah Industrial Home for the Redemption of Erring Girls, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that part of the University of Texas at Arlington campus used to be the site of a home for unwed mothers and orphans? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Berachah Industrial Home for the Redemption of Erring Girls. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Berachah Industrial Home for the Redemption of Erring Girls), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Etta Hulme DYK update

[edit]

Samantha,

I've been working on the Etta Hulme article, using both a variety of articles I have access to on Newspapers.com and the obituary in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram to flesh it out. By my count, I've already expanded it more than fivefold, so I think we're in great shape for DYK nomination. The only trick is that we'll have to nominate it before next Sunday evening, as the expansion needs to take place within a span of seven days. Please take a look at what I've done, and make changes however you see fit. You're definitely the expert on this article! I'm looking forward to working on this article with you, and have a great week!

Michael Barera (talk) 03:35, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Michael, it looks great. I will add more too it when I get back home. I think i have successfully created the DYK for Etta. Let me know if I managed to get it right the first time. It appears under August 13 on the Template talk:Did you know page. If there is another step I need to take just let me know. Always great to work with you. Hope you have fun in D.C. --Doddsam09 (talk) 21:11, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That DYK nomination looks perfect, Samantha! I'll let you take the lead with further improvements and additions. Please let me know how I can help going forward. Enjoy your time in D.C., too! Michael Barera (talk) 12:12, 16 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all your help Michael. Great seeing in you in D.C. I see the Etta DYK is now on the DYK/Approved page, is there another step I need to take, or am I just waiting on another editor to come by and promote it? Thanks again for walking me through the process. Best~ --Doddsam09 (talk) 12:13, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your kind words, Samantha! Regarding the Etta Hulme DYK nomination, there is nothing we need to do further...we just have to wait until another editor gives the article final approval and puts in in the DYK queue. It has already been reviewed, so this final step shouldn't be much more than a rubber stamp. Thanks again for your work on the article (and processing her collection!), and I look forward to collaborating with you again in the near future!
