Welcome
[edit]Welcome!
Welcome to Wikipedia, Djr xi! My name is Ryan, aka Acetic Acid. I noticed that you were new and haven't received any messages yet. I just wanted to see how you were doing. Wikipedia can be a little intimidating at first, since it uses different formatting than other sites that use HTML and CSS. In the long run, though, you'll find that the WikiSyntax is a lot easier and faster than those other ways. Here are a few links to get you started:
- How to edit a page
- Editing, policy, conduct, and structure tutorial
- Picture tutorial
- How to write a great article
There are a lot of policies and guides to read, but I highly recommend reading over those first. If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page. Please be sure to sign your name on Talk Pages using four tildes (~~~~) to produce your name and the current date, along with a link to your user page. This way, others know when you left a message and how to find you. It's easier than having to type out your name, right? :)
I hope you enjoy contributing to Wikipedia. We can use all the help we can get! Have a nice day. Sincerely, Acetic'Acid 10:58, August 31, 2005 (UTC)
Moving pages
[edit]Hi, I noticed that you did some much-needed work disambiguating Judd. Good job! However, it looks like you cut-and-pasted the previous contents of the page to Judd (engine). A better method for doing this type of work is to use the "move" tab (located toward the top of the screen) to move page contents instead. That way, the edit history and talk page gets moved along with the content. You can then edit the original article name however you like (it automatically becomes a redirect, but can be made into anything). For more info, check out Wikipedia:Merging and moving pages. Keep up the good work! - Bantman 04:11, 2 October 2005 (UTC)
- AH! I knew there must be a simpler way of doing it, but I completely missed that "move" tab. Cheers for the heads-up! Deano 15:42, 2 October 2005 (UTC)
I'm wondering about the highlighting you did. It seems to me to be tending toward POV to do that -- it feels like fingerpointing rather than reporting; it makes a quick glance see PATENT INFRINGEMENT ILLEGAL GAMBLING ORAL SEX when a closer reading makes it clear that the patent infringement is still under appeal (and, in my opinion, the patent is invalid, but that's another matter); eBay did not profit from illegal gambling; eBay had nothing to do with some idiot putting up a blowjob video for sale and took action as soon as it was discovered. What do you think?. --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 02:51, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah I thought about that when I did it actually... I think when I read it the first time it was just really annoying having to read the whole text for all those things when I just wanted the Live 8 one. The actual issue isn't apparent from the offset, which is what I was trying to change. In hindsight I'm sure there's a better way of doing it though... Deano 13:47, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

London Underground Trivia
[edit]Hi, and cheers for the comments on my St John's Wood additions. I'm more than happy to write such an article if you really think there's a gap to be filled there – what would it be called for a start?! I'd have thought it might fall under the truly trivial. And you mean an article on underground stations or the wider subject of such questions? Either way it's easy for me to produce such things as I can dig out the perl script I originally knocked up. Smb1001 13:31, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
- Well yeah I suppose it would be the truly trivial, but I was thinking something along the lines of "London Underground Trivia". Or something like that...!!! Deano 17:14, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
Civility concerns
[edit]Hi. In response to this edit and this edit, I'd like to encourage you to review WP:CIVIL. You can make your points about the stability of the template while maintaing good Wiki-quette and assuming good faith. Thanks. Jkelly 18:55, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
Block
[edit]I am blocking you for 24 hours due to your lack of civility over at Template talk:Infobox band. You can't and shouldn't go around calling users stupids and giving orders. Please re-evaluate your posture. --Sn0wflake 21:16, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
Block explanation
[edit]The point is not that you should not argue or defend your position, we all do that. The point is that you should try your best to be civil, even when the editor you are discussing with seems to be as intelligent as a pile of bricks. Keep your cool (WP:COOL) and avoid using derogatory words. The block was more so you could take a breath and less so you could be punished (or anything along those lines). Keep focused and always try to put your arguments as clearly and neutraly as possible. You will be surprised at how many discussions we can solve in Wiki when we act like that. --Sn0wflake 15:50, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
Hi, I noticed that the above article was on afd - I've expanded it. Can you have a look and let me know if it is ok? --Gurubrahma 04:34, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

Re: Portal:England
[edit]Yes, I made the English Portal because of the Scottish Portal - normally I am of the opinion that P:UK is enough. However, if there must be a Scottish Portal, then there must be an English Portal. I'll reinsert it into the template once it is finished. Izehar 22:07, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
Greetings from Paris
[edit]Hey Djr xi,
Thanks for your message and compliments - but could you tell me exaclty where I am teetering on POV on the Paris portal? I am new to Wiki and could much use your experience - as I haven't the slightest where I've gone wrong! Is it the design?
Thanks, take care,
ThePromenader 20:34, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
- LOL! That is just boilerplate text I am only too happy to change - but what should be the "tone" of any introduction I put there for it to "pass the test"?
Okay, wow, thanks for the input. I'll remove the "Talent" stuff first thing tomorrow and see about putting that intro into a box.... Please do come by later and let me know what you think.
Thanks, take care,
ThePromenader 23:29, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
- Hey, thanks for the heads-up - the "cats" (LOL) aren't the only thing that need doing on that page - and I've had to spend the week away from the computer. I hope to get to it now. Thanks a mil for the compliment (I aimed to please, so you reassure) and please don't hesitate to do anything you can to that page. I started it but it shore ain't mine : )

UK Schools
[edit]Category:Public schools in England, Category:Independent schools in England, Category:Public schools in Kent and Independent school (UK)/Public school
^ As per Independent school (UK) the term "public school" is in common use in the UK for "independant schools" - If you have a problem with this maybe you should change the categories associated as well. If you are American though, well, this would be why you do not understand --Anonymous Whistleblower 17:56, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
Ok.
[edit]Voluntary Aided then. Sorry.
Perhaps Category:Schools in the United Kingdom by type should list this type of school... As while it's not a public school it's not a private school or independant school or a comphrenesive either - It is a grammar school, but those are not necessarily Voluntarily Aided...
I'm removing the public school cats and putting it into Grammar school, sorry. --Anonymous Whistleblower 18:08, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
Religion Portals
[edit]Will you please check out my talk page? Someone said that he will delete the religious portals I set up if I don't do this and that. Will you please update the religious portals to confirm to whatever standards. Any advice, suggestions, etc is appreciated. Maybe I shouldn't have wasted my time with creating the portals. --JuanMuslim 1m 21:12, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
- Hi Deano, I saw your post on 1m talk page, and I'm willing to bring the portals up to the standard, but I'm still not fully sure what those standards are, even after reading WPT:P. I worked on the Baha'i Faith portal yesterday and made it better, and I'm willing to do the same for the other ones. Can you please tell me if the Baha'i Faith portal is up to snub, and if not what is missing, and then I will have an idea of what is required. Thanks Jeff3000 21:32, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
See User talk:JuanMuslim#Religion Portals. Deano 22:19, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
Hi Deano. I added the religion portals to WP:P and Portal:Browse. I think links to these portals will grow with time, when more editors start working on them. Many of them are just two days old! Are there any other requirements to be fulfilled? Let me know. Thanks. deeptrivia (talk) 05:11, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
Portal:Serbs
[edit]I believe that a Portal about Serbs at the moment is better because the overall goal is to talk about Serbs worldwide not just Serbia. Serbs don't just live in Serbia, they also live in Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia, and Macedonia. They also have large populations in the USA, Canada, Australia, and England. Even though it may seem now that is only about Serbia, it is not suppose to be. The portal is in its beginning stages and help from other people even you will be much appreicated.

Supermarket categories
[edit]Could I trouble you to reconsider your vote on the supermarkets categories on Categories for deletion. Renaming them all "in" would not be standardisation as the policy for companies is that the "of" form should be used. Thank you. Carina22 00:31, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
hi, i hope u don't mind me contacting u like this. maybe i'm misinterpreting the situation, or maybe i'm just a bit stupid, but i don't think the argument to remove is coming across clearly. i'd genuinely like to understand why you want them removed. if you have time, could you add more detail? UK Template
[edit]Dear Djr xi,
Don't you think that the colours of blue or red would be more appropriate for the background and then have a golden border or something, as gold is not one of the main colours of the UK. What are your thoughts? Josh 21:45, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah I did think that, but to implement either would require a light shade in order to have legible text. Furthermore, it the box was blue then it (IMHO) implies Scotland, while if it is read it implies England. Either way it is unsatisfactory. Gold seemed like a suitable compromise... think Royal Standard... Deano 21:49, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
- Fair enough - have a enjoyable holiday and a happy new year. Josh 22:39, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

RE:soccer am template
[edit]Hi mate, thanks for your message. That's cool, I reckon I can probably find space for that ;-) I've been planning to do some playing around on my user page, so I can add a few of them box thingies. I'll make sure that one goes on. While I'm here, I should congratulate you on your efforts on the Soccer AM page. I certainly found it an entertaining read, with a prose style fitting for the show, so nice one. I do think a section on Barry Proudfoot and the Wheatsheaf would be worthy though ;-) Also while I'm here, as a football fan, you might be interested in the discussion currently underway about a proposed merge of Football chant and Cheering. IMO, although both pages currently need work (and some merging), it would be a shame to lose a useful page on football culture. Maybe you would like to add your tuppence worth? - N (talk) 14:42, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Hindu-Arabic numerals
[edit]Hi! User:RN moved the article to Arabic numerals despite 28 votes favoring the title "Hindu-Arabic numerals" and only 17 favoring "Arabic numerals." He argues that if we don't count voters with less that 150 (or sth like that) edits, only 56% voters "support changing the title to Hindu-Arabic numerals", while at least 60% support votes are required. However, it was agreed between all parties in the beginning of the vote that the proposal is to move the article to "Arabic numerals" from "Hindu-Arabic numerals." It was also agreed (though I thought it was very unfair) that:
- Those opposing the move have the advantage that it won't be moved unless there's a 60% majority
- Those supporting the move have the advantage that the person proposing the move can do the *short* opening statement.
- For all the rest of the voting procedure both parties are equal. (quoting Francis Schonken from 21:04, 18 December 2005 (UTC))
I would definitely have preferred it the other way round, since I think an opening statement makes a HUGE difference, since many people just read the opening statement and understandably don't bother with the discussion below the votes. The present situation was accepted with the agreement that the article will be moved to "Arabic numerals" only if more than 60% voters favored that title. Thus, only 40% oppose votes were sufficient to retain the title "Hindu-Arabic numerals." In the present situation (with over 60% voters opposing the change), I find the move to "Arabic numerals" ridiculous, besides being completely unjust and unfair. Your comments will be appreciated. deeptrivia (talk) 05:06, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

The template you made, linked from the userboxes page, Template:User-AmE-0 is Gone.
Really odd.
did you delete it yourself or get someone to delete, or is something weird going on? o_O
I guess it could've been deleted by an American admin who took it upon himself to censor it, there is definitely no vote on Wikipedia:Templates for deletion. --Mistress Selina Kyle (Α⇔Ω ¦ ⇒✉) 21:11, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

Userbox Categories
[edit]Hey there. I noticed you edited the Template:User Scotland page, to bring it in line with pre-existing categories - I think this is a good idea but given that the idea of the template was to reflect nationality rather than location, I don't think "Wikipedians in Scotland" would be the best choice; similarly the "Wikipedians in the UK" would be the wrong choice for the used category itself. If there's a pre-existing category (or category format e.g. Wikipedians from X) then the template should use that but I really don't like switching nationality markers for location ones... In hindsight it may perhaps have been better to name the template "User Scottish." :P - Hayter 18:16, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
We are now discussing the possibility of moving "Wikipedians in the UK" to "British Wikipedians" (to conform to the standards set by others such as Category:Indian Wikipedians. Presumably if this is implemented then Scottish/Welsh will become legitamate subcategories? Deano (Talk) 17:55, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
Absolutely - sounds like a good idea. Of course I'm drawn to think of Wikipedians in the UK who are not actually British... Ideally I'd prefer both categories, though I'm ignorant as to how much work this would entail. - Hayter 17:58, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
Hi. I noticed you reverted my change to Template:User Ferrari, implying that, because the image was a photograph, it was not a logo and so was not covered by Ferrari's intellectual property rights. However, this is not accurate. There is the absurd situation whereby a photograph of a company's logo, where that logo is the main subject of the photograph (such as a photo of a logo on top of a building) is in fact violating that company's intellectual property rights. It apparently has to do with the extent to which the logo is the subject of the photograph. If you have someone standing in the foreground of the photo, then it would probably not be seen as a derivative work. Similarly, if you have a photograph of the whole car, the logo would not be the main subject of the image. However, a close-cropped photo of the Ferrari logo on the front of the car is hardly borderline, and would be regarded as essentially the same as a non-photographic representation of their logo. For this reason, I have undone your reversion of the template. You are welcome to find a better free image to replace the one I put on there; I couldn't see half the images in the Ferrari article due to server problems at the time. - Mark 10:18, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Helen chamberlain.jpg
[edit]This image may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Helen chamberlain.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. feydey 22:43, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
