DYK for 1974 UCI Road World Championships – Men's road race

[edit]

On 9 April 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 1974 UCI Road World Championships – Men's road race, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Eddy Merckx gave the bike he used to win the men's road race at the 1974 UCI Road World Championships to Pope Paul VI? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/1974 UCI Road World Championships – Men's road race. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

See Wikipedia:Today's featured article/May 21, 2016. I took the current lead section of the article and trimmed it down to 1100-1200 characters for the TFA column on the Main Page for May 21. Does that work for you? - Dank (push to talk) 23:48, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Dank: Sure does my man. Disc Wheel (T + C) 23:53, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Great. I worry about the sporting events TFAs, they're hard to do, because there are a lot of things people are expecting to see. Hard to keep it under 1200 sometimes. - Dank (push to talk) 00:06, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

GAN

[edit]

I started the GAN review at Talk:1973 Kentucky Derby/GA1. Am posting comments as I go, but there's already some stuff you can begin to work on. Montanabw(talk) 22:19, 20 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats on the GA, don't know why the notice didn't ping for you here. Saw you had done some work on 1973 Preakness Stakes, would be cool to do all three of Secretariat's triple crown runs. I'd be interested in lending a hand if you do. Montanabw(talk) 19:59, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Montanabw: Yeah that's what I'm interested in doing in the future, I just have some stuff I need to take care of for the next week or two IRL before I can reapply myself to that. I was also considering getting all the Derbys won by eventual Triple crown winners to GA too, but I'm not too sure of that yet and I need to put more work in on my Giro goal. Disc Wheel (T + C) 22:21, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Why? Some teams have the - (hyphen) and some ones have the – (en dash). It is not correct: we should gain homogeneity. --Almicione (talk) 19:12, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Almicione: It was either during the review for the '88 or '87 Giro, one reviewer made me shift them either to - or –, I chose to do -. I think the teams that are linked by the {{ct must've been edited and had their names switched from - to –. Disc Wheel (T + C) 19:19, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
All I say is that if you switch the team name hyphens in the section, then switch them at every appearance in the article. Disc Wheel (T + C) 19:20, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Just an understanding ear

[edit]

If you thought my GA review on 1973 Kentucky Derby was tough, grab your popcorn and watch what I'm having to do on my current GAN =:-O . It's all good, I keep telling myself it's all good. But do you know of a synonym for "satellite DNA biomarkers? LOL! Talk:Ann T. Bowling/GA1. (Yes, I'm whining. Yes, Karma can be a real b---ooger) :-D Montanabw(talk) 02:12, 31 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That does look like a beastly review you're going through, but the reviewer knows his stuff, so that article will be in great shape for a while after its over. Disc Wheel (T + C) 12:49, 31 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Precisely. There's a big difference between a thorough review and a rip-your-hair-out one (this was probably the worst one, by a now-banned sockpuppet/troll ... they refused to understand that a breed and a species were two different things... sigh) But my favorite to date: Cow tipping. Seriously! (And it was DYK today!) Montanabw(talk) 02:08, 3 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I cracked up when I saw that cow tipping got made GA, wow. Props to you! Disc Wheel (T + C) 18:13, 3 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
We also did so for Jackalope. It's a great deal of fun to insert a little humor in a completely encyclopedic manner! The same crew is now looking at cattle guard while I just created Dude Rancher Lodge. I may take that one to GA as I did for Sip 'n Dip Lounge. Oh yes, one can have a blast on-wiki! LOL! Example of entry fees

[edit]

Hey, as you are working on the horse racing articles, wanted to show you this: [1] (which hopefully will still be the link to the PP card for today's Belmont by the time you see this). It's a great example to show what people actually pay to enter a big horse race, to wit: "By subscription of $600 each, to accompany the nomination, if made on or before January 16, 2016, or $6,000, if made on or before March 21, 2016. At any time prior to the closing time of entries, horses may be nominated to The Belmont Stakes upon payment of a supplementary fee of $75,000 to the New York Racing Association, Inc. $15,000 to pass the entry box and $15,000 additional to start." So in other words, while it might look like entrants pay $15,000 to start, they actually paid somewhere from $30,600 to $105,000 to start, depending on whether they nominated them as 2-year-olds or not... '73 Preakness

[edit]

Because I dabbled in that article, I shouldn't review it. But if it is languishing in the queue without a reviewer, ping me at my talk page, I can probably get one of the folks who has done quality reviews for me in the past to go over and look at it, I'm quite enthusiastic about your project and would be delighted to assist in any way I can. Montanabw(talk) 01:54, 19 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate any help I can get! I understand the situation, but I don't mind waiting for a reviewer. Thanks for any help. Disc Wheel (T + C) 14:33, 19 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Saw an image of the race here. We have fair use images for the Derby and Belmont, this one is the Preakness, seems that we could add it as a fair use image. What do you think? Montanabw(talk) 01:37, 24 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ping

[edit]

The Preakness GA finally got a reviewer, who put it on hold, for some reason, your talk page wasn't pinged (nor did I spot it). But I addressed the concerns the reviewer raised, all minor so far. But you may want to pop over there: [2] Montanabw(talk) 03:00, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

1970 Tour: new rider classification

[edit]

I saw your edit on the 1970 Tour, young rider classification. I think your source is better than the original source, but I found another source that gives the top 5 for this classification, and it agrees to the original numbers... I'll try to see if I can find out which one is more reliable. --EdgeNavidad (Talk · Contribs) 20:59, 9 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I now see that your source even gives the top 10. I am still interested to find out what is the reality, but will not feel offended at all if you revert.--EdgeNavidad (Talk · Contribs) 21:02, 9 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@EdgeNavidad: No worries, just thought that tid bit might be helpful for you, BaldBoris, or whomever likes to periodically enhance the Tour pages! Now that I figured out how to navigate that site, I've just been checking to see if any classifications are missing from the yearly Tour pages since I have finished doing that for the Giro now - for the most part. 1957 NCAA University Division Basketball Championship Game

[edit]

Hello:

The copy edit you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article 1957 NCAA University Division Basketball Championship Game has been completed.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

One sentence jumped out at me: "McGuire's starting line up, and most of the roster, consisted primarily of players from New York state." Is this significant, or simply a coincidence? It seems odd to me to mention it if it wasn't significant, but If it was simply a coincidence, part of the sentence should likely read, "and coincidentally, most of the roster".

Best of luck with your on-going efforts to have the article promoted to FA status.

Regards,

Twofingered Typist (talk) 14:31, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Twofingered Typist: First off thank you for your help on the copy-editing that's a huge help. The sentence you're referring to is rather important as typically UNC would have several in-state players or from states nearby. When McGuire came to the school he came from St. John's (a New York school) and was able to feed players to the school from NY and NJ and so the roster when UNC won in '57 was very unique as it was completely from NY or NJ except for two players. I'm assuming you'd like me to alter the article to say something similar, right? Disc Wheel (T + C) 17:57, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I guess my only question is why did you parenthesis the sentence regarding the '57 team receiving rings in the final paragraph of the article? Disc Wheel (T + C) 17:59, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Disc Wheel: You're welcome for the edit. Yes, I would expand the NY state players bit with some additional explanation. I understand now why you included the sentence. The sentence about the rings is in parentheses because it's an interesting aside but not crucial to the main article. All the best Twofingered Typist (talk) 18:04, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Twofingered Typist: I'll get on it. Thanks again. Disc Wheel (T + C) 18:05, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Team divisions

[edit]

Just letting you know that the team divisions in the 1962 Tour de France were unique for that edition, so not sure that the Giros should use it unless it was a thing. BaldBoris 23:04, 23 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@BaldBoris: Ha thanks for letting me know bud, I totally assumed it was something you thought up and it looked nice, so naturally I thought to steal the idea. Disc Wheel (T + C) 00:27, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's not to say there isn't divisions to be done. 1989 Tour de France and the other 90s and 00s Tours are split between the qualified and invited, similar to how we split them now with World Tour and Conti. I assume the Giro followed the same system. Just have to find something that states if each team qualified or were invited. BaldBoris 13:58, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@BaldBoris: For sure, I'll prolly get to use it like you said for the 90s onward, if I can find a source that breaks it down. However, most sources as you know, are foreign so it makes it pretty inconvenient for translation. I'm just currently just doing random work on all articles as I don't quite have enough time and kinda the willpower to really grind out a full article to nominate at the moment. How are things for you my man? Disc Wheel (T + C) 00:18, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, I agree it can be a bit of a slog doing single articles. In terms of Wiki, I'm just chugging along taking it easy. Oh yea, I got my hands on the rare (or expensive) 1949 Giro book. At some point I'd like to get working on that and the 1949 Tour. I saw you edit it recently, so let me know if you ever intend to go for GA. BaldBoris 12:20, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@BaldBoris: Oh really? The English version? I got a hold of the book and scanned it, but it was an Italian copy and only after did I find out about the english translated edition by Buzzati! '49 is on the list though, just as a matter of when, I sure don't know. But when I start putting more effort towards it I'll give you a shout for sure. There was a similar book by the Pratolini I got for the '55 Giro as well, so that'll take some lengthy translation to do manually on the google translate. GA process for Yoga pants

[edit]

Hi, I was surprised to see what happened to my GA nomination of this article. For some reason I wasn't notified at all on my talk page, so all I got was the one word "fail" in an edit comment on the article's talk page, not exactly a great welcome first thing in the morning.

I am accustomed to working through GA review comments with reviewers, sometimes for a week or more. None of your comments seem particularly difficult or serious, in the sense that a few hours' work could not sort them out. Quick fail is generally reserved for articles that are grossly uncited, absurdly uninformative, or fail to cover several major aspects of the subject; I'd not agree that any of those apply here, on what is a relatively straightforward topic, and I'd certainly like to have had the opportunity to discuss the way ahead.

I'll work through your suggestions now and (if you wish) consult you on progress. Personally I find the best way to do this is to have a GAN open so the comments and replies are kept in a place that everyone can find (rather than on editor's talk pages or whatever). So from my perspective it would be best to open a GAN rather soon, but I'm happy to wait until I've responded to all the existing suggestions. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 11:23, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I would argue that lack of "broad coverage" qualified for the quick fail and you're totally free to re-nominate. I see your making adjustments, which is good, just keep adding more info and don't forget to expand the lead accordingly. I noticed you still have the website Indix cited, which is a retail site and therefore not RS - but the link doesn't go to their site anymore. Just thought of this though, but you could include men wearing them too. Disc Wheel (T + C) 18:05, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll renominate it as soon as I've redone the lead. Retail sites can be used with care for basic facts, as can all primary sources, but the Bloomberg ref is newer and more independent so I'll stay with that one. BTW I've responded to each of your suggestions on the old GA1 page. Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:15, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
FYI: Renominated. Chiswick Chap (talk) 21:38, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
