You may have noticed over the past few days that the MOTD that you link to on your user page has simply displayed a red link. This is due to the fact that not enough people are reviewing pending MOTDs here. Please help us keep the MOTD template alive and simply go and review a few of the MOTDs in the list. That way we can have a real MOTD in the future rather than re-using (This space for rent). Any help would be appreciated! –pjoef (talkcontribs) 08:54, 7 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Motto of the Day Help Request April 2014

[edit]
Today's motto...

All bow to the power of the wiki!

Nominate one today!

Motto of the Day (WP:MOTD) is in a state of emergency and really needs your help! There are not enough editors who are reviewing or nominating mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review, and this probably means that you will notice a red link or “This space for rent” as our mottos for the next weeks and months.

Please take a moment to review the nominations and nominate your own new mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review and Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/'Specials. Any help would be appreciated! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 09:13, 29 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This message has been sent by pjoef on behalf of Motto of the Day to all editors of the English Wikipedia who are showing MOTD's templates on their pages, and to all the participants to MOTD: (page, template, and category).

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Home garden, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Indonesian (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Tips for DYK hooks

[edit]

Hi Dhio. Once I was new to DYK like you, so I might know some misconception that you might have about a good hook The purpose of the hook is not to present a high-value or academic information. The purpose is to make main page readers want to click it, so that they can read the article where they can then get the high-value or academic information. The concept of pekarangan or Indonesian home garden is already foreign to the rest of the world and if you present it in terms other difficult areas such as carbon density, or Balinese auras, or research starting only in 1930s, people are simply not going to be interested in it. A good hook gives an interesting fact that may be simple but people can relate to. For example, the hook of pacu jawi simply talks about jockeys holding tails of running cows (something most people can imagine), and it got more than 10k views, which is very high for a DYK hook. I could have written a hook about details such as being held in only four districts of a kabupaten, or the philosophical meaning of the race in Minangkabau culture, but I doubt that those hooks will generate as much interest with a worldwide audience. A less successful hook I had was for Young Man of Arévalo, which was actually an interesting topic but I chose a hook that's quite boring so it only had about 1k view. In a way there's a tendency that the simpler the hook is (provided that it's interesting enough) the more people are likely to understand it. So, it is a good hook even though a professor might think it's not very educational.

Now, you might think that listing the types of fruits, or the fact that someone grows something in their yards that generates profit are very simple facts, but those are facts that people can understand, similar to the pacu jawi hook. By the way, fruits that are taken for granted in Indonesia (such as jackfruits or mangoes) are actually not that common outside tropical countries, and had an "exotic" reputation similar to how strawberries or kiwis are interesting in Indonesia where it isn't common. DYK for Pekarangan

[edit]

On 21 September 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Pekarangan, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Pekarangan. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Pekarangan), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Pekarangan

[edit]

Hello Dhio, just in case you haven't noticed, I've added my review to Pekarangan. HaEr48 (talk) 21:14, 1 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

HaEr48 - hi! Sorry for the late response, things have been making me busy despite all the self-isolation practices. I'll try to start responding the reviews as I can tomorrow. Thank you for the review, by the way! :D Dhio (talk?) 13:23, 2 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I hope you aren't discouraged by the closing of the nomination. It happens. As the coordinator said, I suggest working with Mike (who commented on the prose stuff said he was willing to help) and once the prose issues are sorted out take it again for a nomination. HaEr48 (talk) 18:46, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

HaEr48 - I'm actually good with that, and I'm looking forward to ask him for (lots of) advice(s). (Unfortunately, chores and college tasks are growing and taking my time more than expected, so I'm going to adapt well with the tasks first to give space for WP.) Thanks for the advice (and the kind words!) Dhio (talk?) 13:33, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
