Attempted hijack of Wikipedia articles
Your attempt to keep an article, Israel State Archives, from being improved on the grounds that it is a "copyright violation" is quite concerning. I am in the process of rewriting and adding new content. There is no problem with this article. It states facts that can be backed up. Your actions make me wonder if there is some kind of political issue behind your insistence that nobody improve the article. I hope this is not so, but I will take it to an administrator if this continues.--Geewhiz (talk) 08:08, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
Edit Conflict
Hi there, I was in the middle of updating the table on Colin Croft (saving 1/2 way through so I wouldn't lose info) when I found you had decided to jump in and edit and I lost everything due to edit conflict. Is there a way we can retrieve all the stuff I added or do we have to start from scratch again? Odd that you decided to add something to one of the tables but not notice delete the 2nd table, which was merely a repeat of the 1st. --Roisterer (talk) 15:54, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
- You can undo my edit if you want, but for the infobox fields to parse properly, you have to include the parameter "living=true" and delete the ' and " characters in the height fields (which are the only changes I made, in order to remove the error messages). Thanks for the help on this page it's appropriated.
I am trying to strike a balance on this page as I believe the story to be a pack of lies but want to comereate the actions in this area of the beach.
- No problem. The article turned up in a maintenance search because of the error in {{coord}} syntax, and I just touched up that part of the article a bit while fixing the error. Deor (talk) 16:06, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
Talk back
Regarding your message I received on my talk page:
“ | I notice that you recently moved 2012 Texas A&M University shooting to 2012 College Station, Texas shooting. Actually, there should be a comma after "Texas" in the latter title (such parenthetical elements are set off with commas on both sides). I'm reluctant to move an article you just moved, but perhaps you would consider moving it again. Deor (talk) 19:50, 14 August 2012 (UTC) | ” |
- Reply: You misread the revision history. A different user moved the article. Perhaps consider notifying the user that moved the article. Northamerica1000(talk) 12:20, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, I assumed that because you closed the move discussion, you had moved the article. I'll hold off until the AFD concludes to avoid introducing a possible cause of confusion there. Deor (talk) 12:59, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Regarding your edit. Yep, you were right about the redundancy of the link to the town--oversight on my part. But in regards to the use of "commonly", given your logic (which was correct), should be not delete entirely the reference to "Sticky Note"? That also is unsourced, isn't it? In my office, they're just called "Stickies", but I'm not putting that in there. 98.82.179.85 (talk) 14:10, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- As the article's lead says, "Sticky Note" is, like "Post-it", a trademark for a particular brand of the things, so it's included (and bodfaced) at the beginning both because we want to avoid appearing to specifically plug 3-M's product and because Sticky note redirects to Post-it note. In my experience, for what it's worth, "post-its", "stickies", and "sticky notes" are used with about equal frequency in casual conversation. (And note that the disambiguation page Sticky has an entry directing users who search for that term to the correct article.) Deor (talk) 14:23, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- Egads, I have really been blind today. Didn't realize (because I didn't read) that "Sticky Note" was also a trademark.
- Thanks for the quick and polite correction. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a rock to crawl under . . . CruncherMon (talk) 17:25, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
Americas
Hi, I noticed you've been the biggest contributer to the article on the Americas, and wanted to let you know I'm trying to make a significant push to really improve the quality of the article. If you're interested in helping, I'd be quite grateful. WilyD 16:16, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
- I've been noticing your work, of course, since the article's on my watchlist. It's hard to believe that I've made the most edits to the article; I guess all those reversions of vandalism and misguided efforts to make the article about the non-English use of America really add up. So far, you seem to be doing a bang-up job, but if I can think of any further improvements, I won't hesitate to implement them or bring them up on the talk page. dear User:deor . This page is basically developed for the pilgrims and it is not a travel guide. It also contains lots of information regarding places , ambience, location and things to keep in mind in the sense that if somebody goes on to visit this holy shrine he/she may be alert . Plz visit this holy shrine u will come to know what trekking really means.

ALO 42
It appears as though you stepped into a trap set for me (that'd I'd probably have fallen into myself). This particular sock is a kid somewhere around Columbus, Ohio, whose highest and best use of time is pestering editors who've gotten his socks blocked in the past. I am guessing that he saw me filing sock puppet reports on ALO and thought to try to draw me in. Anyhow, nice catch! JohnInDC (talk) 22:37, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- OK. I thought it was a rather overobvious user name even for ALO. I didn't waste much time on it, so no harm done. Deor (talk) 23:31, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
Tedious task request
Your help in the past correcting coords has been and still is very much appreciated. I'd like to ask your help with adjusting some of List of crossings of the Hackensack River, which are listed, but due to their format appear awkward on the page. Namely those bridges with only 5 digits in the coordinate do not stack, which would e helpful since there is movement to expand info on the page by the addition of another column. If this all seems too tedious or unworthwhile, I'd understand, but if your inclined it would bevery helpful. with regards Djflem (talk) 07:07, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- Two things occur to me: (1) Four decimal places (e.g., "40.8511° N 74.0293° W") is in almost all cases sufficient for the coordinates of something like a bridge. (2) Line breaks (or "stacking") in these situations are very dependent on what browser and window size each reader is viewing the article with. When I look at that table, for instance, I see each of the four-decimal-place, five-decimal-place, and degrees-minutes-seconds coordinates on one line; but in the case of the six-decimal-place coordinates, the W on the end carries over to a second line.
- One could easily convert all the coordinates in the table to display in degrees, minutes, and seconds simply by pasting "|format=dms" into each {{coord}} template before the '|display=" parameter (one wouldn't even need to change the way in which the coordinates are entered in each individual template). Each would then appear either on one line or on two lines—latitude on the first, longitude on the second, with none of the W-hanging-over business—to any reader of the table. Would that be OK? Deor (talk) 11:09, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for getting back so quickly. Ideally, two lines would be best since visually the coords would be consistent, and would perhaps a better presentation if a "Notes" column were added. Djflem (talk) 15:33, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- I've test-edited a version that puts all coordinates on two lines for all viewers. I did that by forcing the width of the "Coordinates" column (look at the code at the top of the table in the diff to see how); all the other columns still have variable widths depending on the longest entry in each column. Tell me what you think. Deor (talk) 20:07, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- I think you're great! Looks really good, and see no reason would ever want to mess with it. Huge help, thanks!Djflem (talk) 20:24, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

- I had just noticed that 5h Avenue was missing and was checking the municipal borders. Thanks for catching that. And of course, for the great work with the coords. Wonder if you could let me know the location of the headwaters of the Hack. Might come in handy for an introductory paragraph for the list. Djflem (talk) 23:23, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
City of South Brisbane
Why do you keep moving the geolocation? I had it nicely centred on the town hall. Kerry (talk) 18:13, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
- See Wikipedia:WikiProject Geographical coordinates#Precision—five, or even four, decimal places are generally too precise for something the size of a city, even a small one. In the article about the town hall itself, South Brisbane Town Hall, the more precise coordinates are more appropriate. Also, you removed the region and type parameters from the template.
- Looking more closely, I see that we already have an article South Brisbane, Queensland. Why didn't you add your information to the "History" section there instead of creating a separate article? Deor (talk) 19:31, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
The town hall was the centre of the city in a social sense. That's why I chose it as the pin point. The city of South Brisbane is not the same as the modern suburb of South Brisbane. Overlapped but the city was larger and a different kind of entity (being an incorporation). I don't know what the region and type parameters are. They were not in the template that I was copying. Your edits overlapped with mine as I went off asking for help when the template was not working. I pasted back what someone else suggested. Kerry (talk) 22:12, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Thomas Traherne
Hi there. You reverted my edit with the comment "it's "bold, revert, discuss", not "bold, revert, revert and discuss". I don't see what you are getting at. Could you clarify? Xxanthippe (talk) 11:14, 10 December 2012 (UTC).
- I've responded at the Traherne talk page. Basically, when a change has been made that you disagree with, discuss it on the talk page instead of (rather than in addition to) warring about it in the article. Deor (talk) 11:25, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
coord_region
Hi Deor, I saw an edit where you added coord_region = GI to one of the gibraltar batteries. On trust I added it to all the rest of the batteries and then looked up the relevant British Standard to try and understand why I was adding the GI bit. So .... why add coord_region = GI? and where did you find the GI code? Hope you can supply a simple pointer or explanation. Does it just improve mapping in some unknown way? cheers Good Xmas Victuallers (talk) 13:58, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
- The list of codes is at ISO 3166-2; the specific page for Gibraltar is ISO 3166-2:GI. As I understand it, the main purpose the codes have (for Wikipedia) is to select what map resources GeoHack displays when one clicks on the link, but they also embed information that external databases importing our coordinates may find useful. Deor (talk) 14:08, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks Deor, thats a good reason to add it I think - cheers Victuallers (talk) 15:47, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
RE: Class project?
Yes, the edits to the courtly love page are for a class project. I'll ask my professor if he has a Wikipedia account, as I'm not entirely sure. I told him to just jump into this conversation thread if he does have a Wikipedia account. CTLaird.tmf (talk) 02:49, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
- No, Prof. Daly does not have a Wikipedia account. Is there a problem? CTLaird.tmf (talk) 05:22, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
- Well, there are problems with some of the edits—for instance, the material that was added about Chaucer and Gower doesn't belong in the section about post-medieval influence, since C. & G. are medieval writers—although I guess it's nothing that Wikipedia editors can't handle. I'm personally opposed to the use of WP in this way, with instructors making students who may not have fully mastered the material (no offense intended) insert immediately viewable work into an encyclopedia intended for general use, but that's just my opinion. I mainly wanted to direct your teacher to Wikipedia:School and university projects and outreach:Wikipedia Education Program and some other material that he or she might find useful. It would, for one thing, certainly be nice if instructors gave some warning on article talk pages that their students will be editing articles, to prevent editors like me from wading in and slashing at the students' work. Deor (talk) 15:05, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. I'll let Dr. Daly know. CTLaird.tmf (talk) 18:19, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Where does it say that the "coord" template is redundant?
Is there a formal policy saying the "coord" template is redundant? I realise the coordinates are in the map coding, but without the template to display the little blue "coordinates" line in the top right corner, a reader has nowhere that they can visually ascertain coordinates without hitting the Edit button. Thoughts? MatthewVanitas (talk) 16:57, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- The title coordinates should still be displaying. A recent change has caused many thousands of articles to contain error messages (see, for instance, here, at the bottom of the page) when they contain multiple sets of coordinates that display overlappingly at "the top right corner"; and a number of editors, including me, are working to clean up the articles. If I've made an error in some particular article so that the title coordinates aren't displaying, let me know and I'll address the situation. Deor (talk) 21:23, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
