Recent changes
- Some articles have tables that can be sorted in different ways. For example a list of countries can be sorted alphabetically but you can click on the size column to sort them by size. If you clicked on the column a second time it would sort the countries from the bottom to the top instead. A third click will now take you back to the original sorting. [1]
- Self-closed tags now work as in the HTML5 specifications. This means you should stop using some of them.
<b/>
is an example of a self-closed tag that won't work.area, base, br, col, embed, hr, img, input, keygen, link, meta, param, source, track, wbr
can be self-closed. Pages with tags that should not be self-closed have been listed in a tracking category since 2016. They will be listed in Special:LintErrors/self-closed-tag. This doesn't affect<references />
or<ref />
. [2] - There is a banner called
WikidataPageBanner
. It is for example used by the Wikivoyages, Wikimedia Russia and the Catalan, Basque, Galician and Turkish Wikipedias. It will now been seen by mobile visitors too. Before this it was only seen on desktop. The wikis should update instructions onMediaWiki:Sitenotice
so that editors know to test and style for mobile too. [3][4]
Changes later this week
- You can now edit MassMessage descriptions through the API. This is useful for tools and gadgets. [5]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 June. It will be on all wikis from 11 June (calendar).
Future changes
- A temporary fix helped wikis make their main pages more mobile friendly. This was in 2012. It has not been recommended since 2017. It will not work after 13 July. Wikis should use TemplateStyles instead. 118 wikis need to fix this. You can read more and see if your wiki is affected. [6]

Recent changes
- Toolforge hosts several tools created by the Wikimedia community like edit counters or enhanced editors. It is changing the domain from tools.wmflabs.org to toolforge.org. The routing scheme is moving from tools.wmflabs.org/toolname to toolname.toolforge.org. You can read the details. Tools that use OAuth will have to be updated to keep working. You can ask for help.
Problems
- There is a Wikidata item link in the sidebar on many pages. This disappeared for a couple of days for users who have the Monobook skin. This was because of a bug. It has now been fixed. [7]
- Editing, logging in and logging out didn't work properly for a short period of time last week. It was soon fixed. [8]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 June. It will be on all wikis from 18 June (calendar).
Future changes
- Pywikibot is a Python library to automate work on wikis. It will not support Python 2 after the new version in July. Support for Python 3.4 and MediaWiki below 1.19 will also be dropped. You should migrate to Python 3. You can ask for help. [9]
- The selectors
.menu
and.vectorMenu
will no longer work in the Vector skin. This can affect gadgets and user scripts..menu
should be replaced byul
..vectorMenu
should be replaced by.vector-menu
. [10]

New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020
Hello Davidwr/Archives,
- Your help can make a difference
NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.
- Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate
In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.
- Discussions and Resources
- A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
- Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
- A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
- Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

Problems
- There are some new tools to make it easier for newcomers to start editing. They are available on some wikis. These wikis had a problem with the visual editor for a short period of time last week. This was because of a bug in the new tools. It was soon fixed. [11]
- Some user scripts and gadgets stopped working because of a change to CSS selectors.
.vectorTabs
should be replaced with.vector-menu-tabs
to fix this. [12]
Changes later this week
- The developers are working on a new interface to solve edit conflicts on talk pages. This will be released on 24 June. You can give feedback. [13]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 23 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 24 June. It will be on all wikis from 25 June (calendar).
Future changes

Problems
- Everyone was logged out. This was because a few users saw the wikis as if they were logged in to someone else's account. The problem should be fixed now. [15]
- Some readers didn't see new edits to pages. If the page had been recently changed they saw an older version of the page instead. This only affected readers who were logged out. It lasted for ten days. It has been fixed. [16]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 30 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 July. It will be on all wikis from 1 July (calendar).
Future changes
- The Modern and Monobook skins use the ID
searchGoButton
for the go button. This issearchButton
for Vector. To have the same ID for all skins it will change tosearchButton
in Monobook and Modern too. This will affect gadgets and user scripts. It will happen on 23 July. They should be updated to usesearchButton

Problems
- The Score extension has been disabled for now. This is because of a security issue. It will work again as soon as the security issue has been fixed. [17]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 July. It will be on all wikis from 9 July (calendar).
Future changes
- Abstract Wikipedia is a new Wikimedia project. It will collect language-independent information that can be easily read in different languages. It builds on Wikidata. The name is preliminary. You can read more. [18]
- The iOS Wikipedia app developers are thinking about new experimental tools. If you use an iPhone you can help them by answering the survey.
- Some rules for user signatures will soon be enforced. Lint errors and invalid HTML will no longer be allowed in user signatures. Nested substitution will not be allowed. A link to your user page, user talk page or user contributions will be required. You can check if your signature works with the new rules. This is because the signatures can cause problems for tools or other text on the page.

Recent changes
- Users can thank others for their edits. Checkusers can now see user data related to that action. This can help identify sock puppets who harass others using thanks. [19]
Problems
- Everyone was logged out a couple of weeks ago to fix a security problem. The problem was not entirely fixed. Because of this everyone was logged out once again last week. [20][21]
Changes later this week
- Wikis that are not for one specific language can translate pages. Sometimes parts of translations are outdated or missing. Outdated translations are marked with a pink background. Missing translations will also be marked in the future. This markup can sometimes break things. It can soon be disabled by using
<translate nowrap></translate>
on the source page. [22] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 July. It will be on all wikis from 16 July (calendar).

DanTDM Spanish revert
Hello there. I noticed that you reverted my edit which was a Spanish translation of the picture caption of Dan. Why was this??? I fixed the "I like cheese" thing but it got reverted. So why the Spanish translation? DSXG Plays (talk) 22:25, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Recent changes
- A temporary fix helped wikis make their main pages more mobile friendly. This was in 2012. It has not been recommended since 2017. The mobile main page special casing stopped working 14 July. 60 wikis now have main pages that don't work well on mobile. You can see which ones, how to fix it and how to get help in Phabricator. This is the same problem that was reported in Tech News 2020/24 and 2020/26.
Problems
- There is a problem with the interlanguage links. The interlanguage links are the links that help you find a specific page in a different language. The sorting is broken. The developers are working on a solution. [27]
- Some users keep getting the notifications for the same event. Some of these are old events. [28]
- Some users have trouble logging in. This is probably a browser cookie problem. The developers are working on understanding the problem. If you have trouble logging in you can see the details on Phabricator. [29]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 July. It will be on all wikis from 23 July (calendar).
Future changes
- There is a
Printable version
link. This will disappear. That is because web browsers today can create a printable version or show how it will look in print anyway. [30]

- The first features of the Desktop Improvements project are available for logged-in users on all wikis. In order to use them, uncheck Use Legacy Vector in your local or global preferences in section Skin preferences. More improvements are planned. Feedback is welcome.
- On multiple wikis, a UTCLiveClock gadget is available. For wikis that import the gadget directly from mediawiki.org, end users can now choose a different timezone to show instead of UTC.
Problems
- The deployment train for MediaWiki has been blocked this week. [32][33]
- Translation Notification Bot was sending the same message multiple times to every translator. This has been fixed. [34]
- Some users were receiving the same notification multiple times. This has been fixed. [35]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from July 28. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from July 29. It will be on all wikis from JUly 30 (calendar).

Problems
- All queries to the Wikidata Query Service failed between 17:50 and 17:59 UTC on Thursday 23 July. Some queries failed during a longer period. [36]
- Interlanguage links were ordered incorrectly for the past few weeks. This problem was also mentioned in Tech News two weeks ago. The problem is now fixed. [37]
- There is a problem with the global preferences for the "Use Legacy Vector" option. Developers are working on fixing it. [38]
- A bug in the Wikibase extension had disabled the "move" and "create" types of protection in the main (Gallery) namespace on Wikimedia Commons. New protections could not be added, and existing protections were not enforced, allowing some page moves and page creations that should not have been possible. This has now been fixed. [39]
Changes later this week
- The video player will change to be simpler and more modern. This week, the current beta feature will become the video player for everyone on most non-Wikipedia wikis. The old player will be removed. [40]
- Users'
global.js
andglobal.css
pages will now also be loaded on the mobile site. You can read documentation for how to avoid applying styles to the mobile skin. [41] - In the MonoBook skin, the
searchGoButton
identifier is nowsearchButton
. This may affect CSS and JS gadgets. Migration instructions can be found in T255953. This was previously mentioned in issue 27. - Bot operators can use Pywikibot to regularly archive discussions. The behavior when the bot uses
counter
to prevent large archives was changed. [42] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from August 4. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from August 5. It will be on all wikis from August 6 (calendar).

Recent changes
- FileImporter and FileExporter became standard features on all Wikis during the first week of August. They help you transfer files from local wikis to Wikimedia Commons with the original file information and history intact. [43]
Problems
- The mobile skin displays a message at the bottom of the page about who edited last. This message showed raw wikitext. This has now been fixed. Some messages in Structured Discussions and content translation may still appear as raw wikitext. Developers are working on it. [44]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from August 11. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from August 12. It will be on all wikis from August 13 (calendar).
Future changes
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on September 1. This is planned between 13:30 and 15:30 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [45][46]

Recent changes
- If you revert an edit using the undo link your edit is marked with an
undo
tag. This will now only happen if you don't change anything in the edit window before publishing the undo. This is to keep users from marking edits as undos when they actually do something else. [47] - The new OOUI version will not work with Internet Explorer 8. This means the wikis will look strange and not work well in Internet Explorer 8. This was reported in Tech/News/2020/17. This is because keeping the wikis working with very old browsers creates other problems. [48]
Changes later this week

Changes later this week
- Normally pages can be moved to a title that has no existing page yet or to a page that has only one revision, which is a redirect to the page to be moved. A new user right allows editors to move pages over one-revision pages that redirect to anywhere. [53]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 September. It will be on all wikis from 10 September (calendar).
- All MediaWiki API modules will now use
watchlist
instead ofwatch
. This was inconsistent before. [54]
Future changes
- The Wikipedia Android app team might work on patrolling tools in the future. You can let them know what tools would be useful for you or for less experienced patrollers. See the page on mediawiki.org.
- OTRS will be updated to a new version. This will probably take around two days. OTRS agents will not have access to the system during these days. Emails that come in during the update will be delivered when the update is done. The plan is to start around 08:00 UTC on 14 September. This could change. [55]
- The Wikipedia Android app will send push notifications if users want them. This could help you see for example when someone wrote on your talk page or your edit was reverted. This will need Google Play Services to work. It will also be possible to get the app without Google Play Services but push notifications will not work. Google Play Services is also used to make the app work for Android 4.4 users. [56][57]
- Wikimedia code review could move to GitLab. It would be hosted on Wikimedia servers. You can take part in the consultation.
- Dropdown menus in the Vector skin use a
.menu
class. This will not work in the future. Scripts can usenav ul
instead..vectorTabs
and.vectorMenu
will also not work. Some scripts need to be updated. You can read more in Phabricator.

Draft:Renaldo Gouws
You posted
- Comment: I have raised issues of conflicts of interest, paid editing, and whether only one person use this account on the editor's talk page (diff). These should be addressed before this page is accepted, as the answers will determine which, if any, templates like {{connected contributor}} or {{connected contributor (paid)}} are applied to the talk page of the article once it is accepted. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 22:17, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
- Comment: Please note that this editor created a substantially similar article on the Simple English Wikipedia. It was deleted through that Wikipedia's equivalent of WP:Articles for deletion. An external web site purports to hold a copy of this version.[58]. Before this page is moved to the main encyclopedia, reviewers should look at the deletion log of Draft:Renaldo Gouws (here). If possible, ask an administrator to look at the old versions to see if they need to be history-merged into this one. If the content is completely different OR the only substantial editor is South African Influencer then a history merge is not required. Otherwise, it MAY be required for attribution purposes. Note that the purported copy of the version on the Simple English Wikipedia was created almost entirely by this editor (edit history). davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 22:14, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
My response to the questions are as follows:
- Comment: I am the creator of this article recommendation as I have been tasked to set up our political party leadership positions. It is a non-paying position (I saw that it was asked by Davidwr in a comment below). This is the first experimental one to see if the neutral way of speaking on the candidate would be able to avoid any concerns on whether or not it reads as spam or advertising. The aim is to create more articles of senior leaders on here considering the South African history and political landscape is very diverse. The previous concerns raised in the comments below are valid regarding the previous article suggestion a year ago but the biggest problem was the lack of references which as you can see many have been provided for which wasn't previously the case. Secondly, since the last submission the person has been elected into senior positions within the party. Which he wasn't when the previous one was submitted and which was the biggest concern. — Preceding unsigned comment added by South African Influencer (talk • contribs) 15:14, 4 September 2020 (UTC) South African Influencer (talk) 21:09, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
- @South African Influencer: I saw this a few days ago on the draft article. You clearly have a conflict of interest and should tread carefully. It is much harder to maintain a neutral point of view when you have some relationship with the subject or writing about the subject is one of your responsibilities. Consider talking to fellow editors at WP:WikiProject South Africa. In any case, using the WP:Articles for creation process rather than editing the main encyclopedia is the right thing to do when it comes to things that are "part of your job" - meaning things you "have been tasked with" - even if that task is unpaid. For example, I rarely write about companies I've worked for, schools I've attended, or sports teams or movies that I really like because it is harder for me to stay objective. I can do it, but it's easier to write about things I don't already have an emotional feelings about. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 21:36, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Davidwr: Thank you for the feedback. I don't know the person personally. I understand what you are saying but just to clarify I am writing about leaders from ALL political parties in Nelson Mandela Bay. The focus is on Nelson Mandela Bay the metropolitan and it's politicians that aren't featured on Wikipedia as much as other metros in South Africa. I hope that clarifies it and thank you once again for the feedback. South African Influencer (talk) 15:42, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
Appreciation for your contribution on Draft:Ipo Arakeji
Hello User:Davidwr Thank you for your efforts so far concerning the article in trying to work on. Kindly assist me in getting it to a Wikipedia main space worthy stage please. Thank you Anonymoussix (talk) 00:56, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Anonymoussix: My time on Wikipedia is limited and erratic. I see you are already reaching out to WikiProject Nigeria. They should be able to help. The Wikipedia Teahouse is also a good place to get help.
- If you familiarize yourself with the Five Pillars of Wikipedia and Wikipedia's policies and guidelines you are more likely to pick topics which qualify for articles and more likely to be able to include suitable references. Also, read What Wikipedia is not. This will save you time by showing you what topics to avoid writing about. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 01:06, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Davidwr: Thank you so much, you're doing a really great job! I await their response but I don't know how soon I'll get a response. I will really like an article on it to be created and I want you to help out with it based on the information I've provided there so far. Kindly look for a way to assist me please, I will be very grateful if you can, please. I'm still very new to Wikipedia. Also, I'm trying to write an article on Seax Penz, it has been deleted about some hours ago, kindly help look into it also please. Thank you very much, you have a new fan here, lol Anonymoussix (talk) 01:34, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Anonymoussix: I don't have the time or expertise to give you all the assistance you need. I can tell you that Seax Penz was not deleted, simply moved to Draft:Seax Penz. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 01:37, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

Hello Davidwr. I saw the edit you did relating to WP:DISPLAYTITLE, but i don't understand. I didn't use DISPLAYTITLE (maybe it was done automatically). I am relatively a newbie. I initially changed the title by moving the page, from "Polycarpos Georkadjis" to "Polycarpos Georkatzis" (the current version). I then noticed that there were additional spelling errors that i overlooked, and tried moving the page to change the title a few minutes after the aforementioned move, but i got the following message.
The page could not be moved, for the following reason: The page could not be moved: a page of that name already exists, or the name you have chosen is not valid. Please choose another name, or use Requested moves to ask for the page to be moved. Do not manually move the article by copying and pasting it; the page history must be moved along with the article text.
Can you help? The correct title would be Polykarpos Giorkatzis. Demetrios1993 (talk) 03:34, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
- Only administrators and a few others can move a page over an existing page unless the existing page 1) is a redirect to the page you are moving from, and 2) the page you are moving to has only 1 edit in its page history. In other words, if Polykarpos Giorkatzis had had only 1 edit in its page history instead of 3, you would have been able to do the move yourself. See WP:MOVE for details.
- The place to request a move is at Wikipedia:Requested moves. Before you request the move, read Wikipedia:Article titles#Foreign names and anglicization and Wikipedia:Article titles#Use commonly recognizable names. If you are 100% sure that Polykarpos Giorkatzis is the correct title - meaning that it is the most common transliteration for this individual - and can back it up with clear and convincing evidence if someone disagrees, make the request at Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting technical moves. If you aren't 100% sure, follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 03:56, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

{{DISPLAYTITLE:Polykarpos Giorkatzis}}
. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 04:02, 12 September 2020 (UTC)- Thanks Davidwr. The change i am suggesting is actually legit. You can see the English version of the name in this following source (do a word search to find the name), http://rulers.org/cyprgov.html. I am little confused with what is described in Wikipedia:Requested moves. Yesterday i asked someoneone i know whether he can help with the request, still waiting for his answer. Problems
- The Wikipedia apps briefly showed pages without CSS last week. This meant they looked wrong. It was quickly fixed but cached pages without CSS were shown for a few hours. [59][60]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 September. It will be on all wikis from 17 September (calendar).

Recent changes
- There is a new tag for reverted edits. For example you can see it in the recent changes feed or in the article history. It is added to edits when they have been undone, rollbacked or manually reverted to an older version of the page. [61][62]
Changes later this week
- The number of times you can do something in a period of time on wiki is limited. This could be the number of edits per minute or the number of users you email in a day. Some users are not affected by all limits because of their user rights. They could soon see the limit even if it does not affect them. [63]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 September. It will be on all wikis from 24 September (calendar).

Note to collaborators
@Jon698 and Pennsylvania2: Please hold off on changing List of Joe Biden 2020 presidential campaign endorsements and List of Joe Biden 2020 presidential campaign endorsements from organizations I'm trying to do things that affect the entirety of both articles. I should be done enough to remove the {{inuse}} template in 1-2 hours. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 02:24, 25 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Jon698 and Pennsylvania2: I've removed {{inuse}} from the main page, I'm still working on the spin-off page. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 03:04, 25 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Jon698 and Pennsylvania2: I've removed both {{inuse}} templates. I'm still doing some tidying up, but that will be on a section-by-section basis so I'm not too worried about edit conflicts. If I need to edit a particular section for awhile, I will tag it with {{inuse|section}}. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 03:11, 25 September 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for re-posting that template on the other page. Sorry for stepping on any toes. I know it looks like I just dived in out blue on this: I saw the question get posted last night, and looked into it straight away, but I refrained from answering because I'd already answered a couple of q's and didn't want to hog the answering and cause edit conflicts.
Basically i screwed up and then did a bungled job of patching everything up. I hope you understand what I'm saying lol. All the best, Zindor (talk) 17:55, 27 September 2020 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Admins can now see links to diffs of deleted revisions on Special:AbuseLog. This uses the interface of Special:Undelete. [64]
- Editors are automatically added to some user groups. For example editors are added to autoconfirmed users when they have edited enough times and long enough. Abuse filters can hinder users from automatically getting user rights for a period of time. They can also remove rights user have. Wikis can now ask to change how long this period of time is for their wiki in Phabricator. It is currently five days. [65]
Problems
- Last year some abuse filters stopped working because of a new change. If they tried to use variables that were unavailable for that action they would fail. This has now been fixed. [66]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 September. It will be on all wikis from 1 October (calendar).
Future changes
- You can't see the language links to other language versions from the talk page or history page. They are also not shown when you edit an article. This could change. It is not decided if for example the history page should link to another history page or to the article. You can take part in the discussion in Phabricator.
- The link colours could change. This is to make the difference between links and other text more clear. You can read more in Phabricator.
- In your preferences you can choose to get different notifications on the web or by email. You will see
Apps
as one of the alternatives later this week. This is because the Android and iOS Wikipedia apps will use push notifications for those who want them. You can see the preferences on the test wiki. The goal is to have push notifications on Android in October and on iOS in early 2021. [67] - You can soon put pages on your watchlist for a limited time. This could be useful if you want to watch something for a shorter time but don't want it on your watchlist forever. It now works on mediawiki.org and will come to more wikis later. You can read more and see when it will come to other wikis.
- You can see what Wikimedians think are the best new technical tools this year. You can also nominate them.

I need to report a issue with the edit filter with security implications, so I am reluctant to just "post" it on Phabricator. Hopefully, it's an en-wiki configuration issue that can be fixed without opening a Phabricator ticket. If an administrator who can see the non-public parts of the edit filter configuration can let me know how to report this, please reply here or drop me an email. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 15:54, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- I'll look at this. Send me an email with the details. Alternatively, if you're pretty sure it will need a change from the developers/sysadmins, you can report it as a security issue on Phabricator, which will hide it from the public. Jackmcbarn (talk) 02:40, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

Latest draft of Wibbitz Wikipedia page
Error in Template:Reply to: Username not given.
Hi davidwr!
I'm Sarah, the author of the Wibbitz Wikipedia page that was recently rejected.
I believe that I reviewed (and closely followed) all the guidelines that Wikipedia around has provided, made it clear that I am being paid by the company, and only provided independent and reliable sources from publications that are unaffiliated with Wibbitz.
I also used the following company pages as references when writing the article:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animoto https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Videology https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shutterstock https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Innovid
I understand that you believe the article that I submitted is too promotional and that the information provided is unimportant, but I don't see much of a difference in both the tone and the types of information provided in the articles I referenced above.
Can you do me a favor and point out the differences between the published articles and my own, or let me know of any specific changes that need to be made in order for the article to be approved?
Thanks so much! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Surphughes (talk • contribs) 21:18, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Surphughes: The 4 pages you mentioned, Animoto, Videology, Shutterstock, and Innovid, are not the best examples. I see evidence of promotional editing in all four's edit history. Some has been cleaned up, but there is some cleanup left to do.
- The main issue Draft:Wibbitz, like with so many drafts about topics that are not obviously notable ("Wibbitz? never heard of 'em, the references better be solid" vs "IBM, duh, of course they should have an article, oh wait, they do"), is that it's hard to find 3-5 reliable, independent sources that are about the company rather than its products. The sheer number of references makes it hard to spot the small number that are needed to determine if the company meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines. If you have not read WP:Notability, WP:CORP, and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations please do so. To help myself and other editors easily assess if the company meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines, please go to the draft's talk page and list 3-5 references that, if read by any experienced Wikipedia editor who has not read the draft or the rest of the references, would make him think "Gee, that company meets the requirements for an article, someone should write one."
- On an unrelated matter, when you ping someone, you need to put a | and their username after, like it says to on {{ping}}. Also, it is customary to put four tildes,
~~~~
, at the end of your messages. That will put your name and the date. I manually added your name and date to your previous message, using the {{unsigned}} template. - I hope this helps. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 23:42, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for your mention
We will never please everyone. I'm glad I pleased you. I hope I pleased the editor. I worked out a long time ago that whatever we do will be held up as incorrect by at least one editor. "Susceptible to challenge" is, to me, the same as "controversial" but doubtless means something else to someone else.
I use a boilerplate set of decline templates whcih you may enjoy, perhaps plagiarise, here. I think some of the wording was used as the decline templates improved while I was on an extended Wikibreak.
When reviewing I also deal with pictures on Commons, almost all of which are copyvios
When I accept I also link an article to Wikidata if possible Fiddle Faddle 16:03, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
Numbers
I have reverted your addition of a hat-note (which made the guideline begin hatnote, template, hatnote before reaching the actual content) on the grounds that I doubt very much that the supposed ambiguity has ever caused any problem anywhere on Wikipedia, and therefore does not need to be fixed, clarified, etc. Of course you are welcome to make your case on the talkpage. (I am not watching this page, so if for some reason you need to respond here, please ping me.) --JBL (talk) 13:22, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
Recent changes
- There is a new tool where you can see which home wiki users have in discussions on Meta. This can help show which communities are not part of the discussion on wikis where we make decisions that affect many other wikis.
- You can now thank users for file uploads or for changing the language of a page. [68]
Problems
- There were many errors with the new MediaWiki version last week. The new version was rolled back. Updates that should have happened last week are late. [69]
- Everyone was logged out. This was because a user reported being logged in to someone else's account. The problem should be fixed now. [70]
- Many pages have JavaScript errors. You can read more and now see a list of user scripts with errors.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 October. It will be on all wikis from 8 October (calendar).
- Letters immediately after a link are shown as part of the link. For example the entire word in
[[Child]]ren
is linked. On Arabic wikis this works at both the start and end of a word. Previously on Arabic wikis numbers and other non-letter Unicode characters were shown as part of the link at the start of a word but not at the end. Now only Latin and Arabic letters will extend links on Arabic wikis. [71]
Future changes
- You will be able to read but not to edit the wikis for up to an hour on 27 October around 14:00 (UTC). It will probably be shorter than an hour. [72]
Hello
I wanna ask something, can a mere spam report by a bot that is closed be deleted on wikipedia?
U have been wanting to ask any admin or editor this... Dremo24 (talk) 18:35, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what your concern is. If the concern is that the bot has a "false positive" report, the issue needs to be raised with the bot operator so it doesn't happen again to someone else. In this case, the report containing the false positive is itself evidence that the bot has a problem, so it should stay up until the bot operator decides to take it down. If it's a legitimate spam report, then it's a legitimate spam report and I don't understand why you would ask that it be removed. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 19:14, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
Hi , I declined your speedy delete nomination for User:Programer11/sandbox as although it was a copy of https://beva.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/eve.13085 , that page was published under a CC-BY-4.0 license that permits a copy to Wikipedia (with attribution). Pathways schools
Thanks for the reply. I do understand that Pathways schools might have literary articles and materials. But the main schools that are presented in Wikipedia are ones with significant history, multiple famous alumni or ones who have established their names in the region. Pathways schools are quite new (established in 2008) and have no famous alumni (as far as I looked). Another red flag is that the page was name in 2010 by a user named "Pathways". I think that the article undermines what Wikipedia is. And even I don't have time to do though extensive research to make the article to Wikipedia standards. Thanks for the interest! Kash Up (talk) 08:02, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Kash Up: Until a few years ago, there was a de facto rule that schools that had the equivalent of a US High School Diploma were presumed to have significant coverage until someone took the time to dig around and claim "hey, I've dug around and haven't found significant coverage, PROD or AFD." That was true in 2010, which is probably why the page wasn't deleted under WP:TNT as COI-spam.
- Another factor is that at least one of the schools is an International Baccalaureate school, which strongly suggests that reliable sources could be found if someone bothered to look. That said, PROD is a soft delete, if someone without a COI wants to resurrect it or rewrite it, they can. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 12:34, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
October 7 2020 Adsmohali
@Davider:my friend how are youAdsmohali (talk) 17:02, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Adsmohali: When starting a new discussion on a talk page, it is customary to start a new section. In most web browsers, there is a "new section" or "+" link at the top of talk pages.
- There is no need to "ping" when you are writing to my talk page, I get an automatic notification when anyone writes to it.
- If you want to talk about Wikipedia, ask your question. It may be a day or two before I get back to you though. You might get a faster response on the talk page of the article or draft you want to talk about, or if it is a general question about Wikipedia, by posting on the Wikipedia Teahouse. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 17:07, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Adsmohali: I just noticed your user page. I am not here to "be friends with people" or to "make friends." I am here to be friendly with people because being friendly is very helpful, almost a requirement, in any collaborative project. I and just about everyone here is here primarily for one reason: To build an encyclopedia. I assume that is why you are here as well. That doesn't mean friendships won't develop over many months or years, but it's not likely with me. I've been here over a decade and the only people on Wikipedia who I would count as actual friends are people who I also knew in person. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 17:14, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
thank you very much for editing the article. i am new to wikipedia so i had no idea how to do it. just one last edit is remaining, its shahalami not shahalmi. i was trying to edit it but it gave me editing conflict. thanks alot again for your help. Syedyasarabbas (talk) 22:24, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Syedyasarabbas: you should be able to edit now. When you get an edit conflict, just copy your changes to a temporary location like a word processor document or notepad entry, re-load the page, then re-do the edit, being careful not to accidentally over-write the changes the other editor made. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 22:30, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
