iTalkBB

[edit]

Hello! I created the article on iTalkBB that was deleted after an AfD that was reopened twice due to sparse participation. While I respect the consensus, and agree that the original article did not meet notability criteria, I just got back from a trip out of town followed by a brief vacation, during most of the period when the article was flagged as needing sources and more content. I would therefore like to re-create the article (rather than taking what was admittedly an unsourced stub article through deletion review). Before I do, however, I will collect a lot more material and cite reliable sources.

I do have two questions for you:

1. Is there an appropriate "revised and rewritten" (or "AfD criteria addressed", cf. "under construction") tag to use for a re-created page?

2. Do you know if there is any tool (such as a Javascript application or a Watchlist setting) that will send automatic e-mail notifications of AfD tags to editors when their articles (or those they put on their Watchlists) are nominated? I would surely have commented as well as voted if I had even realized that an AfD was going on, and my track record for meeting the Heymann Standard has been 100% thus far.

Thanks!

Dave, five out of six of your hooks in the next update are American ones. We are not supposed to do that. Would you like me to finish the update now? I'll do it if you like. Gatoclass (talk) 13:33, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Whoops, sorry, be my guest, just saw it was a long way overdue and thought I had better make an attempt to get something in there. Thanks. Davewild (talk) 13:35, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problemo, thanks for helping out :) I'll just add a couple of non-American ones and it will be fine. Gatoclass (talk) 13:38, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This AfD was closed a few days ago by Orlady as a speedy redirect. I have just now realized that this was a non-admin closure and that the article had not actually been deleted (in the sense that the old version is still available in the history log). The problem with that is that now another user undid the redirect (which was easy to do since the history log is still available) and the article Jim David Adkisson has been restored back to the mainspace. I saw that you did an edit on the AfD page after Orlady's closure and since unlike Orlady you are an admin, I wonder if you can help out here. I think that it would be better to actually delete Jim David Adkisson, per AfD outcome, and then create a new redirect to 2008 Knoxville Unitarian Universalist church shooting from scratch. If you are willing to do that, that'd be great. If not, I'll probably have to relist Jim David Adkisson for another AfD and go through the motions again. Thanks a lot, Nsk92 (talk) 22:04, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks!

I'm honestly overwhelmed at the level of support that I've received from the community, and will do my best to maintain the trust placed in me. I 'm also thankful to those who opposed or expressed a neutral position, for providing clear rationales and superb feedback for me to build on. I've set up a space for you to provide any further feedback or thoughts, should you feel inclined to. However you voted, thanks for taking the time out to contribute to the process, it's much appreciated. Kind regards, Gazimoff 21:14, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tom Manion

[edit]

To whom it may concern:

I am new to editing on Wikipedia, and I apologize if I am going about this incorrectly. I am writing in reference to Tom Manion’s Wikipedia page. It was deleted with claims that he did not meet the notability requirements. I would argue this point on two factors. The first is the following comment from Wikipedia’s guidelines:

Individual scheduled or expected future events should only be included if the event is notable and almost certain to take place. If preparation for the event is not already in progress, speculation about it must be well documented. Examples of appropriate topics include the 2010 U.S. Senate elections and 2016 Summer Olympics.

As Mr. Manion is a candidate for the 2008 Congressional elections, his candidacy would seem to fit this qualification.

Secondly, your guidelines state that political candidates may “still be notable if they meet the primary notability criterion of "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject."

Below, I have provided references to Mr. Manion from several media outlets.

Did you know the article you closed the DRV on Rielle Hunter has been recreated?

Mind you, given her face is splashed all over the newspaper this morning, perhaps that's a good thing. Nfitz (talk) 16:06, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Probably for the best - and I'll leave alone too. I was looking through recent DRVs and her name jumped out - because of all the media coverage she's had in the last 24-hours. There are photographs of her in my newspaper today, so her notability has likely changed significantly, given Edwards confession. Hook comment

[edit]

Thanks for the tip-off, I didn't notice the silent comment, and I've now removed it. I really don't get 74's objection at all, it's not a "sad past" hook, to me it's an inspiring story of someone overcoming childhood obstacles to meet with great success in later life. I think 74 is totally missing the point. Gatoclass (talk) 17:15, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Inflammatory diseases of unknown etiology, deletion review

[edit]

Hi Davewild, you closed the deletion debate for the article Inflammatory diseases of unknown etiology, which was proposed for deletion in November last year, and which had a marginal keep.

I think it needs to be deleted, perhaps speedily. Failing that, a review of the deletion debate would be in order. Thanks. ► RATEL ◄ 03:56, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi thanks for your message regarding this article, I'm afraid I have to stand by my closure of the debate as Keep given the arguments on the AFD. On your points here, being imcomplete or an orphaned article are not grounds for deletion, but rater for cleanup. There are no reasons for me to speedy delete the article either according to policy. Each article stands on it's own merits and having both a category and a list/article is something that is supported by guidelines.
As to your last point a consensus in the previous AFD was persuaded otherwise but, given that over nine months have passed since then, you are welcome to renominate the article at AFD again if you feel you can persuade people that it should be deleted. Equally if you think I misread the consensus then you can take it to WP:Deletion Review but that looks at process not the merits of the article generally so AFD is probably your better bet.
Sorry I could not fufill your request but hope this is at least somewhat helpful. Davewild (talk) 17:13, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll AFD it again, in time. Despite your assumption above, the article is not a reflection of the Category "Ailments of unknown etiology" at all, but rather an attempt by an editor to provide a list of diseases he thinks are actually caused by infectious agents. His bias was edited out of the article by others, thus removing his reason for writing it, and that's why he abandoned it. ► RATEL ◄ 23:07, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to lodge an objection to your closing of this as 'keep'. The rewrite has NOT established notability, as almost literally every single 'reliable source' is trivial, as it's clear from the context and headlines, simply a long series of passing mentions scraped together to disguise the lack of significant sourcing. The tone certainly seems indistinguishable from that of a press release, and the claims of his having a famous father utterly irrelevant. --CalendarWatcher (talk) 21:38, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I just noticed that on December 18 in the middle of a discussion of whether to keep deletion of Benjamin M. Emanuel User:Y (who called for deletion) recreated the page (deleting history of deletions) and redirected it to Rahm Emanuel. (No diff was created.) Only today did you say it would stay deleted without another AfD. I find it annoying that someone would do that when Wikipedia:Delete#Process_interaction infers people shouldn't be messing with the current article status in the middle of a review. Is this allowed? If not, how about a word to User:Y not to do that sort of thing. Or whatever is proper process. Thanks! CarolMooreDC (talk) 15:04, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've expanded his article as much as I can; see what you think. Mangoe (talk) 15:02, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

SIEF

[edit]

A member of the executive board of the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore, the main international scholarly association for European ethnology, recently posted a brief description of the association which you deleted almost immediately because in your view the article "does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject". I have just looked at the deleted text and would very much appreciate an explanation of this judgement, including why hardly any time was allowed for more information to be added before you chose to wield the axe. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Derbaer (talkcontribs) 11:21, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Alternative to notability

[edit]

Hello! I am working on an objective alternate to notability in my userspace. Please read User:A Nobody/Inclusion guidelines and offer any suggestions on its talk page, which I will consider for revision purposes. If you do not do so, no worries, but if you wish to help, it is appreciated. Best, --A NobodyMy talk 01:51, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've left a comment at the talk page of Djiboutian presidential election, 2005. Would this be more appropriately title 'Djibouti presidential election, 2005', like United States presidential election, 2008, etc.? Bsimmons666 (talk) 17:52, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikibreak

[edit]

I'm having a couple of days wikibreak while I think about whether it is worth continuing to contribute to wikipedia. I can take virtually anything from vandals or people who don't care about wikipedia but when I (and others) are accused of undermining the encyclopedia, being vengeful, punitiive, arbitary, myspacers, incompetent, time-wasters and idiotic by other contributors I have to wonder what the point of contributing to wikipedia is. Due process is fine when you are an admin (and others will race to your defense) but if an admin thinks a page should be deleted then who cares about our policies. Too often nowadays an admin will just delete a page based purely on their own interpretation of policy and who cares what others think, in that situation I have to wonder what the point of contributing further is when my contributions could be arbitarily deleted at any time regardless of whether there is consensus for that action.

Jimbo once said in response to someone saying that signature books do not contribute to the encyclopedia - "Sure it does, if it contributes to a collegial atmosphere of friendliness. Snapping at people who are just being friendly doesn't improve the encyclopedia at all, as far as I can tell." Apparently nowadays many don't care about our contributors, regardless of whether they make great contributions to the encyclopedia but also occasionally want to be de-stress and be friendly with others. Along with the very prevalent practice of biting newcomers this has to be part of the reason why participation is starting to drop. When I started I was helped and made welcome despite not having much of a clue, but nowadays I doubt many newcomers are so lucky.

I will probably be back soon as wikipedia is such a brilliant idea that I would really want to see keep getting better but I can no longer feel sure that this will happen. Davewild (talk) 19:53, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
