Woodley Park

Article issue: Woodley Park Neighborhood.

You took place in an AFD for the article I made for the Woodley Park neighborhood of Washington DC. This is a real neighborhood. I will include some links to prove it. I'm no Wikipedia veteran, so I don't know how to remedy the problem.

Hey, there. I listed an article for AfD and noticed your Woodley Park entry, so I was curious about the situation around it. I read your recent note about the original AfD-ed article being made into a redirect, and I agree, too, that the one about the Metro stop itself is notable. But the one about the neighborhood is back now under a new name: Woodley_Park_(Neighborhood). Is this the one you were considering for deletion? I don't know where to side on the issue, since the category for "Washington DC neighborhoods" lists a lot of other articles. Featured pictures and consensus

Anybody can close Featured Picture nominations, not just admins. Also, the person who does so should guage consensus--as you said, "votes" with lengthy reasoning are stronger than "votes" like mine (we don't really vote). However, that doesn't mean my voice should be completely disregarded. Users who don't understand these subtleties should not be closing nominations, so have faith in the system and assume good faith! I don't oppose FPCs just to be an ass. I do so because I have a valid concern about the image.

Generic "the above vote is a bad one" comments are typically superfluous and somewhat rude. It's ok for there to be some dissent; unanimity is not required. ~MDD4696 15:47, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

I probably could have written my comment better. Didn't know that FPs weren't like AfDs and didn't require admins to close. I do feel, however, that when X is proposed (as a general statement), anyone opposing X should state why: heck, they can even simply say "I agree with person Y" where person Y gave the reason they agree with. Reversions of "Expectancy Theory" and "A Nasty Story"

hi Dark. i just got messages from you that you reverted a couple of my deletions. one was the non-existent article on expectancy theory. thanks for doing that. i cut and pasted the expectancy section from my doctoral dissertation into the article, and so deleted the redirect to the article on victor vroom, but then worried about the possibility of copyright issues should that portion of my dissertation end up in a journal article. unfortunately, i then couldn't figure out how to set up the redirect.

the other reversion of my deletion, however, is undesirable. the article on "a nasty story," by Dostoyevsky (which amounts to about a sentence), is incorrect as reverted. the sentence in fact describes the plot of Dostoyevsky's novella, "the Gambler," which has often been published in the same volume as "a nasty story," but is a different story altogether, and has nothing to do with gamblers in a spa town, as stated in the article as reverted. i would advise you to revert your reversion.

Addendum: I've busted out my copy of "a nasty story," and will attempt to put together a coherent but brief plot summary for the time being. i am going to once again delete the erroneous existing plot summary.

Elephant argument.

Alright, I'm aware that 1. I am anonymous and 2. By comments made on the talk pages every who wikifies on a regular basis is elitist towards single purpose or sock puppets, and i'm not even them.

but to take argument against one pop culture reference over another is absurd, especially when your public information shows a bias towards cartoons/anime. Yes there was an episode of the simpsons where they got an elephant, but there also elephants in video games, the "oliphant" in JRRs Lord of the Rings, the darwin award elephant story. Pop culture is not easily defined, and to draw an arbitrary line of one person's definition as the final call on an entry is not democratic or correct. Its a problem wikipedia will have to deal with in the future. Feel free to delete this or respond, I'll check back on it when I peruse my bookmarks. Of course being the brilliant person I am I've argued against a java programmer who rads Dostoyevsky.

The boxes are called "userboxes": you can learn about them and find lists of them at WP:BOX. The other "cool looking stuff" is simply overdone HTML formatting ;). I formatted my signature using Wiki and HTML code, and put it in my preferences: there is a box in there labeled signature, where you can put whatever customized signature you want. You can use mine and others' signatures as examples to make your own. Hi, sorry, my intent was not to vandalize any article and I never have had that intent. I wished to have a discussion with everyone about the factual accuracy of the reception section. Number edit detecting bot

User:Curtis Autery/findNumChange.pl is an initial draft of a script (not a full-fledged bot) to detect edits which were only number changes. It doesn't do everything you asked for, but hopefully you can find it useful. Curtis Autery 01:58, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Cool! How exactly would I use it? I assume it would require whatever computer is running it to have enough hard disk space to extract the entire database XML file with all the history? Since my Linux box doesn't have enough disk space to do this, what would the instructions to use this be on a Windows machine? In testing, I downloaded the enwiki*.7z file, then piped the 7-zip output to the script. This comment line shows how I tested it in Linux:

# 7z e -so inputfile.7z | findNumChange.pl > outputfile

With Windows, the same command line might work if you had cygwin's perl and the 7-zip executable (7z.exe) in cygwin's usr/loca/bin directory. Still, I'd recommend the first method with the compressed file on Linux.

Right now the script doesn't have a lot of frills, but I can add other features to it, like searching for the latest enwiki dump, checking the user edit counts like you mentioned in the request, and checking for a revert. This is my first bot attempt, so I'm still learning the XML format, what page stuff is located on, etc. - Curtis Autery 10:54, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Oh, so it doesn't have to be extracted to disk to run? That should work on my Linux box then, as it has about 10GB of space and the 7z file is a mere 5GB. Does the script check to see whether an edit has been overwritten since the original edit? appeal ?

Can I appeal your rejection of my page ?

I (think I) have some good reasons :

1. I've tried to find this list, and only created it when I failed. I would assume that I'm not unique... (the existence of the equivalent sea cadet page would seem to support this assumption).
2. There is already a similar page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sea_Cadet_Corps_in_Canada
3. I was unable to find any webpage that provides all of number, name, and location for all of Canada.
4. The information was not just copied from the sources. I had to do a fair amount of digging to collect it all together. Some of the sources actually contradict each other, necessitating further research. It took about a day to complete all this research (although I found some sources as I went along, so it could be done faster). Most of the sources are regional, meaning that you need to already know the region in order to find details for a squadron.
5. It answers some difficult-to-answer questions - how are squadrons distributed ? How many squadrons are named for their sponsor ? How many are named for their location ?
6. It actually leads to further research - why are there gaps ? Are these squadrons that no longer exist ? Why no squadrons in the 400s ? Have any names or locations changed over time ? When was each squadron formed ? (that would be a nice thing to add to the list).

Though such a list might be useful, note that original research is prohibited. If you put it back into the AFC page (which I would have no qualms with you doing) I would suggest that you attempt to demonstrate how your article isn't Original Research. — Dark Shikari ^talk/_contribs 18:33, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure that I understand what you're saying (apologies if I'm just being slow - I'm new to this wikipedia thing). Your original rejection said that it was a copyvio, which I don't think is correct - copyright doesn't apply to facts, does it ? (IANAL) Now you talk about original research - all the facts on the page are verifiable from the source websites. The only tricky thing is that in a few cases the source websites disagree (but at least one agrees with my page, unless I screwed up).

Finally - "put it back into the AFC page" - does this mean that I go through the same process again ? Are you saying that if I re-enter the same content in the same way then it might be approved this time around ? That sounds...odd, which makes me suspect that I've misunderstood :-)

What I meant is that I might have been wrong in not approving your article, which means that putting it back into AFC (i.e. redoing what you did before) will allow me to review it again. You have addressed my concerns, and so I'd be willing to put it in an article. Uploading album covers

Hey, Dark Shikari, I just thought of something else. I added two or three more articles that are completely devoted to the albums of Maureen McGovern (ever heard of her? I strongly recommend that you try her out if you like artists with true talent!), but I'd like to also upload the album covers. I checked out the directions on how to do them, but I'm not exactly sure what the legal way would be. I do remember that I had some of the covers from my LPs and CDs of her music copied onto a disk, but I don't own any rights or anything like that. If you cannot help me with this decision, can you think of anyone who can? Write back ASAP, please.

Redirecting words into existing sources

Hello, Dark Shikari. I have another question, and this time about redirecting sources. If you take a look at the article you approved on Maureen McGovern's album Academy Award Performance: And the Envelope, Please, you'll see that the movie The Big Broadcast of 1938 is mentioned; however, on the album cover (and a few other outside information on the movie), the word "The" is dropped from the title. I'd like to redirect the sentence "Big Broadcast of 1938" to the article The Big Broadcast of 1938 but I can't find (so far) any directions on how to do that. Can you help me out with that?

Ian Huntley

In reference to Aaron Nicholls, the page was in existance in Wikipaedia stating, "Aaron Nicholls was jailed for life in 1999 for the murder of his twelve year old girlfriend, Lauren Carhart, in which he poured barbecue fuel on her and threw matches at her until she caught alight. Nicholls is the prime suspect for providing Ian Huntley with antidepressants for his September 2006 suicide attempt." It therefore follows that this apge should be linked to from Ian Huntley given the obvious connection.

No, it was deleted because you tagged it with a speedy template (for not asserting notability). It did not go through AfD, so there was no consensus about the inherent notability of the topic. The amended page is now no different to many pages that currently appear on the site. It is the same format etc and shares similars references about is foundation etc. Out of curiosity, do you have a particular dislike for rugby league, or the more obvious 'Police' aspect of it. There is no genuine reason to not allow this page to exist and be accessed by the public. Considering the nature and content of many of the pages on Wikipedia, this one should not be an issue. But is it notable? There are notability guidelines for all sorts of sports teams, and I am not sure whether it abides by them or not. That is why I suggested to take it to AfD to get comments from other Wikipedians. I have claimed nothing, what I did was ask a question of you. A question you did not answer instead you responded with a threat of making my case a lot worse, which is easy when you can remain anon. Now to answer your question. YES the club is notable and for several reasons, including but not limited to being the first of its kind in the state of Victoria and for helping pave the way for the sport of rugby league (not rugby) in a traditionally non rugby league state. I do not think it should be one persons decision as to the suitability of the page. The club is a genuine sporting club with a strong albiet short history and the page appears to meet the criteria for being included on this universal (not yours) site. It isn't one person's decision to whether a page is suitable or not. Suitability is decided by consensus. Why do you keep badgering me about this as if its somehow solely my decision whether the page stays or goes? Please don't misinterpret wanting answers and clarification as badgering, that is being a bit too sensitive. Vandalism?

Eto... I'm not very familiar with how to post on here, So I'm just editing the page. I got a message from you (Dark Shikari) so I read it. Appearantly I've committed some sort of vandalism? If thats the case, I assure you it was purely accidental, but I'm close to positive it wasn't me. I've never editted a page (this is my first time), and I had never gone to the page you accused me of editing. Is it possible for an IP address to be shared by several computers? I am the only one who uses this computer, although I do use a router. That router is not connected to any other computers. Sorry if I caused any hard, just hoping to clear this matter up.

P.S.- Just saw your profile thingy on the way here, also a huge fan of GITS: SAC (Aoi is the coolest character from any Anime!), as well as being a massive fan of manga/anime in general. You seem to be doing a lot of good work, keep it up, samaritan!

Welcome to Wikipedia :). The vandalism message you got is from when someone at your IP address did this on October 22nd. However, this might certainly be someone other than you: many internet service providers swap IPs every few days, and some even swap IPs every time you log on. AOL is even worse: they swap IPs every time you visit a page, resulting in there being a small group of "AOL IPs" that get blocked all the time. Obviously this is a good reason to register :). User Page Rules

I just saw a notice prohibiting edits on a User Page and I was wondering if that's allowed. Since you're the Wikipedian obsessive (in a nice way) I know, I thought I'd be best off asking you. It is generally considered good form not to edit anyone else's user page unless there's a good reason (mispelling, fixing formatting, or changing a category for the purposes of WP:CFD). I checked his notice though... and honestly, it looks like total bullshit. I'm not really a critic of the article--even I wasn't sure when I nominated it, which is why I asked for the opinion of other Wikipedians. Glancing over the article again, it seems much better.
