Hi Daniel, I recently deleted some vandalism on the Anna Wintour page, and you sent me a message saying that I was experimenting and that it had been reverted. All I did was delete random nasty comments people were leaving about Anna Wintour being a "whore"...what's with the experimenting stuff?

Gliding

Many thanks for the copy edit. I could quibble with a couple, but in general the improvements are beneficial. Yes, my first language is English, and as an author, it is usually quite good. (I get upset about misused apostrophes and 'less' instead of 'fewer'). However, it is always much easier to start with a clean sheet of paper or with a freash viewpoint. I found I could read and re-read drafts of my book, but it needed my editors to point out some glaringly obvious changes. This limitation may be peculiar to me. If you can change to full support, it would be appreciated. At present the article is being ignored. If there is anything else I can do, let me know. A Creative Commons license allows the copyright holder to change the license at any time (including to All Rights Reserved). However, any copies created from the image whilst it was CC licensed are always available under CC - even if the creator's license is altered. This is a particular problem with Flickr imagery, as their licenses can be easily altered and there is no record to prove if it was ever freely available. On this particular image I can see no CC licensing (though I might be missing it), its possible that it was licensed freely, but it is also possible that it was never, and without proof its better to err on the cautious side (ie deletion).--Nilfanion (talk) 15:34, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

Since your passing of the article as GA I and other editors have worked overtime to improve it and I self-nominated it for Featured Article status. Since the GA passing the number of sources has doubled, I have combined several sections to incorporate the trivial Tattoos section into a prose analysis of the gimmick, which also used parts of the headers, and have expanded on the prose in the article. If you would like to take a second look it would be much appreciated. I wouldn't know Ulster County from Uriah Heep;-) I noticed the vandalism on the New Paltz page so I decided to check the articles on other towns in the area, so while I was at it I stuck in some of the missing infoboxes. I think the same vandal(s) went after some articles on Chicago or Mexico, that's probably how I wound up checking up on New Paltz. Why would anyone have a beef with New Paltz? Changes made to Action Park (not by me!)

Hey Daniel! Someone tagged Action Park because of the use of a YouTube video. Just today, someone else removed the tag and the link to the YouTube video. I didn't feel capable of taking up the discussion of the issue with whoever this is, but I do tend to feel that that particular video should be OK to keep, especially since GAR is out of business and there's some possibility that the copyright in its Action Park commercials has lapsed. Guilty Pleasures

You recently disputed the fair use status of Image:Guilty Pleasures.jpg with the reason that it should not be used in the main Barbra Streisand article. I uploaded this image to illustrate the album article Guilty Pleasures (Barbra Streisand album), as described on the image page. I agree that the image should not be used to illustrate the main Barbra Streisand article, however, the image should not be deleted, as it is needed for the album article.

Rondout Reservoir

Hi, is this where to contact you? My attempt on the Rondout Reservoir page was a bit ham-handed, I admit, but I'm trying to improve. You do an amazing job on Wikipedia. I can't imagine how much time you must devote, but I'm sure it's a lot.

Regarding the quote by the DEP employee regarding the "f---ing ignoramouses": I know for a fact that while the quote is accurate, it was NOT said to the THR in response to the forged inspection report controversy. The THR editor who worked on that story (Joe Dowd) had a personal disagreement with the employee and crafted the story to make it seem as if that was the DEP's reaction to the controversy. If you go back and read the original THR story about the issue you'll see the very ambiguous language that was used to describe the timing of that quote:

The section is as follows:

"I can already see exactly what this story ... is going to look like," Michaels said at one point. "It's going to be written by a bunch of (expletive) ignoramuses, and it's going to be done in such a way as to make us look as bad as possible."

When the THR writes "said at one point," that is their way of confusing the issue to make it seem like that response was to the news of the inspection reports. But it was not. It was said in response to another item the THR was asking about, and then inserted in that article to satisy a particular editor. If the comment was made in response to the forged inspection reports you can be sure the THR would not have used that kind of vague language. And when they insert the ellipses (sp? the three dots) that's to skip over the topic that the employee was addressing with the quote. (As in, "I can already see what this story about flooding is going to look like")

I am not aware of any encyclopedia that prints as true statements it reads in one single newspaper. Also, your inclusion on the page of the phrase "allowed himself to be quoted" is a clear sign of an editorial judgement on your part that should not be part of any encyclopedia.

Catskills map

Yea, I had seen that several pages had similar requests for a map showing where a region was in relation to other regions, like the Catskills, Poconos, Berkshires, Green Mountains, etc etc. Not having the time to make different maps for each, I figured I could at least make one that covered the region and could be used on these various pages. But being multi-purpose like that, and needing to be readable in limited pixel space, I used the letter-key thing, realizing it is suboptimal. But, given time constraints, it was that or nothing. If I get a chance, I'll work on making individual maps. I haven't gotten a chance to add this map to the various pages it may be useful on, like the Berkshires. The Berkshires page already has a map, but only of Massachusetts. So I was not sure whether to add mine and if so, where.. So, time being short, I just left it off.. Thanks for the feedback! Kindred spirits

Daniel, The Durand, "Kindred spirits" is a well known painting , but even that artist would readily admit his technical inferiority to the Cole from 1826 in the Warner Collection[1]. "Kindred Spirits" has so many topographical faults that if one goes to Kaaterskill Falls [2](hard enough these days) they would not know where to look, as it is the painting equivalent of a venture into fiction. Use your eyes, compare the two, and the Cole is far more accurate and being much earlier, more colorful, it is far more important in the development of the Hudson River School. I have studied this for over twenty years and all of Cole's and Durand's peers would agree. Read the Howatt books on the Hudson River School [3]or anything by John Wilmerding [4]. If you want to say Church is more important, that is fine, but not Durand, despite recent headlines concerning the sale of "Kindred Spirits."

• Frost Valley's website itself uses "Frost Valley YMCA".
• It is locally and regionally known as "Frost Valley YMCA."

You have no idea how much I symphasize with you regarding not being able to follow up. I've basically created several projects myself just so that we could get a few more articles assessed so that wikipedia could know the relative status of a lot of them. I'm currently going through all the dogs articles to ensure that they at least have the banner, and then I'm going back to the Germany project to assess their articles. After that, I've got Radio Stations, Religion, Africa, Canada, Italy, France, and Munich to get through. However, as none of these assessments are really a priority, I will have time to try to help a little with the soft drinks project. Derivative works of copyrighted products

Thanks for creating the proposal Wikipedia:Replaceability of fair-use images. I fully agree. One issue should possibly covered. I do not know if I want to bring this up on the talk page, as it will only make things more complicated.

Designer items including furniture, kitchenware, and buildings may be covered by copyright. The United States does not have panorama freedom like Germany and some other contries. It may therefore be impossible to create free images of widely marketed products or public places.

Some examples:

1. I have been using a set of pressed glass tumblers in everyday use for the last 15 years. This set is marketed in Finland at low prices in discount stores, including Anttila, our verson of Sears. The set was originally desiged by Aino Aalto, first wife Alvar Aalto, who died in 1949. On my last visit to New York I noticed that the glasses were for sale at the gift shop of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, This particular week they were on promotion at 25% of the regular price. I took photos of the display stand with the SALE sign, and posted them to Wikimedia Commons. Two weeks later, I noticed that they had been deleted the next day! The criteria for deletion is stated in Commons:Derivative works. Although the I did not argee with the application of the guidlines in this particular case, I decided not to reupload the images.
2. A picture of Fifth Avenue outside the Guggenheim Museum on commons was also requested for deletion. The picture was saved only by the fact that the building is from before 1990. (See:Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Guggenheim museum exterior.jpg)

If photograps of these objects really can not be free, then by the replaceability criteria we could claim fair use for any images. There does not seem to be any legal incentive to use user generated images. The lesson: If they do not let us photograph their products, then we have the moral right to use their promotional images. (As an example I used this as a fair use rational for Image:Knoll - Eero Saarinen pedestal chairs.jpg.) -- Petri Krohn 03:46, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Are you saying, that even though these images were not allowed on Commons, they would be accepted as GFDL on the English Wikipedia? Is this because there is genuinely a difference on derivative work on Commons and En? Or is this because there is less copyright paranoia on En?

Coke

A lot of the protests against New Coke specifically referred to it's taste (i.e. a lot of people insisted that they preferred the taste of the original coke). The protests weren't exclusively (and probably not even mainly) against the very idea of changing coke. But of course without a reference to cite, I don't think we can really say one way or another. Hello Daniel Case, sorry, but I am unable to see the change in license from cc-by-nc-nd-2.0 ro cc-by-2.5. It is still non-commercial and non-derivative license, which propmotes for speedy-deletion. Discussion of fair-use policy amendment

Actually, that's not the part of the policy (enforcement and exceptions) I object to... I object to the first sentence of criterion #1. I gather it's probably much older than the amendment. The amendment gives teeth to the policy, which I think would be fine, if the policy itself were fine, but it's not. Perhaps the best way to go about it is to propose a new addition to the exceptions section of the policy. Let me mull it over. VoiceOfReason 14:54, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

• Thanks very much for your hard work and copyedits. I have a picture of a bunker. I can try to get a photo of the source in the spring. I have never seen any discharge figures and there is no USGS gauge (or even a County flood warning gauge) on the creek. Very briefly I am fine with all but two of the edits. 1) The archeology was done prior to construction (it was a 6+ acre farm field before it was a sewage treatment plant). 2) There are two kinds of trails - those that are multi use, and those that are dedicated to just snowmobiling or xc skiing. Yeah, there's one in April. That gives us lots of time to plan. (Harriman? Given the location, you'd have been better off going across the river instead. From where I live, I always go to Beacon to catch the train (But if I did have to go to Lower Manhattan, I would go to Campbell Hall instead).

How was it? I could just read the page, but first-person accounts are always more interesting.

We should think about planning a Hudson Valley meetup at some point.

It was pretty neat. Nice to be able to put faces with names of people I've been working with for so long, like Crazy Russian and Uncle Ed. Some of the conversations were a little over my head, since I focus more on writing articles than writing code and stuff, but it was interesting all the same.

Ever since Secaucus Junction opened, I take the train from Harriman to Penn Station. I never drive to Dutchess, Putnam, or Westchester if I can help it. Thanks especially for the barnstar, which is very much appreciated and my first actual barnstar (I already had a 'donut star'). I had only looked at current USGS and Lycoming County gauges, but after your comments I searched some more and found out there was a USGS gauge near Elimsport until 1994. The page on the web only gives stage and discharge for two floods, one of them Hurricane Agnes [5]. I will contact USGS and see if I can get the average discharge. The problem is that the gauge is pretty far upstream and so is not the total discharge. Any ideas on estimating or otherwise finding discharge at the mouth?

If discharge can be added, I want to get that in there before nominating the article for the main page. I took the latitude and longitude out for the source as well (since it is in the template now) and want to make it "...farms (many Amish)." in the lead as the farms are not primarily Amish. Are these edits OK with you?

• The bunker picture is already in the article at the very bottom (I took it a little over a week ago, before FAC, mostly for a short article on the Susquehanna Ordnance Depot I will write at some point). Cove Road runs within a short distance of the WDHC source, so I should be able to find the source and get a photo of it. The infobox picture is one of my favorites. I submitted it to WP:PPR to see if it could be a featured image, but they had technical issues with it (blown highlights, slight blur as it is a hand held shot in lowish light). I went back there this fall to try and get a picture with colored leaves, but the creek water level was lower and the leaf colors were mostly yellows and it was just not as inviting or lush a picture. Thanks for your kind words. With a lot digging and three emails to the USGS I found some discharge data for Larrys Creek and White Deer Hole Creek and have added discharge information to both articles (infobox and Geology section). Since I am just a chemist ;-) if you would take a look and make sure I have not written anything dumb I would appreciate it. Thanks for asking about it - it got me digging again.

I am honored and glad that the articles I mostly wrote are an inspiration. It looks like there is a lot of information already there for Slide Mountain. I just skimmed it - looks like it could use more inline citations. If you want me to look it over at some point on the road to FA I would be glad to (and I have AndyZ's Peer Review script if you ever want that run). Your photos are very nice by the way - especially the Shawangunk Kill infobox shot. As for other stream articles being improved, I know Paulins Kill is a work in progress on its way (hopefully) to FA (I helped a lot with its Peer Review).

I had thought about writing about Bald Eagle Mountain and plan to help User:Dhaluza with the article s/he has started at some point (beat me to it). I could also write a little article about White Deer Ridge (North and South) as I learned about it writing WDHC. Other than that I am not sure there are any mountains I know well enough to write about (and I am stumped for lakes).

Being a nitpicker, I have two final questions (both on WDHC). 1) Can I revert the last sentence in the lead to "...farms (many Amish)." from your edit of "...farms (primarily Amish)."? I think of primarily as meaning mostly / majority, and the only data I have does not support that (although driving around Elimsport on Sunday there are many Amish out for rides and strolls). 2) Second lead paragraph now reads "...28.4% of the watershed given to agriculture and 71.6 percent...". I think it should be consistent - both "%" (how I wrote it) or probably better, both "percent" (someone's edit of one %). What do you think? Thanks again, Ruhrfisch 01:25, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

The New York State and County Route WikiProjects Newsletter Issue 001 – December 2006
Intro Issue The Beatles WikiProject has been running a newsletter for some time now to great success, and, after some consideration, I've decided to launch a similar effort for the New York County Routes and New York State Routes WikiProjects. This could prove to be a very effective medium of communication between the members of the groups, and with increased communication comes the possibility of increased production. For the most part, this first issue will be a "dry run" of sorts, to work out any bugs in the system. The first serious issue with permanent sections will most likely be January's issue. Nothing as elaborate as the Wikipedia Signpost is planned, but the amount of information that will be found here will more than make up for the lack of framework.	From the Editor This is a work-in-progress and likely will be for some time. As we get settled with a format, I'll begin to make some improvements to the barebones structure and give a little more life to this page. DOT Beat Plans to reroute New York State Route 63 in Peoria, Covington, Wyoming County (15 miles southeast of Batavia) were unveiled on December 6. The project will eliminate a sharp curve present in the center of the hamlet, rerouting NY 63 along a new alignment to the north. Details will be finalized by Summer 2007 and construction will commence in Summer 2008. NYSDOT conducted a meeting on November 29 with Binghamton-area residents about the future conversion of New York State Route 17 to Interstate 86 from Horseheads to Binghamton. Topics of note included improvements to exit 67 (New York State Route 26, Endicott) and alternatives to exit 68, an eastbound exit only leading to Oak Street in Vestal, among which was the closure of the exit. New York State Route 23A, closed from Palenville to Haines Falls since June when record rains caused a retaining wall to collapse and give way to a mudslide, was reopened on November 22. During the time that the road was closed, numerous upgrades were made, including the replacement of culverts, upgrading of drainage systems along the road and the repair of both the collapsed wall as well as the existing retaining walls. Project News Remember to vote on next month's project featured article! Articles needing cleanup can always be found at Category:New York State articles needing work. Both state and county routes needing cleanup are fed into this category. Articles on reference routes are now being created in large numbers. As a general reminder, use {{Infobox NY Reference Route}}, link to your new article on the List of New York State Reference Routes and Parkway Routes, and, if you need a reference marker made, see TwinsMetsFan or Fwgoebel. Likewise, articles on county routes are also being made in impressive numbers. When writing these articles, be sure to abide by the guidelines on the project page, to maintain a consistent feel across all of the articles. Missing shields for county routes? See TwinsMetsFan or Northenglish. County routes in New York was recently created. Pictures of actual county route shields are greatly desired and needed. Also, if possible, some additional text and history about county routes in New York State would be welcome. New York State Route 11A remains the lowest active route without an article. The lowest decommissioned route with no article is New York State Route 7C. New York State Route 52 was, unfortunately, not qualified enough for Good Article status due to a lack of references (full report). Any references that can be added to the article, particularly the history section, are greatly appreciated. There are routes still lacking mileposts. Member News One month ago today, Fwgoebel came on board to the project and, in the time since, has contributed over 50 new articles on touring routes and has added to dozens more, including helping in the effort (along with JB82 and TwinsMetsFan) to convert all usages of Template:NYSRInt to {{NYint}}. Blackhead Range

You wrote a comment on the Blackhead Range being see as far off as Albany and it's subarbs. You may want to update tit with the following information. On a clear day, the range is also visible from open summits in the souther Adirondacks such as Prospect Mtn and the Hadley Mt. firetower. It's truly impressive to view this range from eighty miles to the north. Conversely, on a clear day, one can discern the southern Adirondacks from some of the north facing views on the Blackhead Range as well as from Windham High Peak. Looping water slide picture

Hey Daniel, good work in getting that picture into the article. However, I think it should go into the looping water slide section of the article, much farther down, rather than at the top. Thanks Dan for the rv. I spent more time on this than I intended. I started incrementally making changes and that's always a problem so I dropped it into the sandbox and my edit looked more substantial. I wondered in to see what the fuss was after the Port Authority announcement. I've written a lot of airport articles. The diagrams are defacto what all the big airports use and they are very useful (e.g., illuminiating just how enormous that little airport is). Sexual objectification

I submitted a photo to sexual objectification of women in panties heels and nothing else vacuuming; it's of a fashion show by Imitation of Christ, a well-known label. Several editors want NO images on the page, but I think this one is pretty clear: at a fashion show, these topless models vacuuming in heels shows women objectified sexually. My edit was actually true in that typing 'jup' many times into Microsoft Speech crashes your computer. First, don't tell me what to do. Second, I really can't imagine that Microsoft intended such a thing to crash your computer - therefore I would class that as a glitch. Hi! Writing letters to dictionaries isn't going to work any better than adding them into Wiktionary: they work the same way we do (or we, being a dictionary work the same way as they ;-): on independent print citations (including durable internet publications). No dictionary is a vehicle for coining words; we document words in use, after a span of time that irritates most people (at least 1-2 years).
