Curps, my old friend, how are you!? I'm so glad to see you're still here! I can't wait to collaborate with you some more! I'm so happy! ha!ha!ha!ha!ha!ha!ha!ha!ha!ha! Plautus satire 03:46, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

hello Curps, quite a time nothing heard from you; still around ?? soon I may have some more information on Minor Planet Names, Desertsky

I'm still around, but took a break for a few weeks. Sure, let me know about your new information. -- Curps 09:58, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for the message, nice coincidence: just now I saw that MP 73640 (1977RM) has gotten a final name : "BIERMANN" if you like you my add the name in the list of "my" planets. See wiki "Hans-Emil Schuster"

if any more news I will inform you, thanks again DESERTSKY 2005 July 20th

Not in astorb.dat yet (as of 19 july). Care to give us a copy of the MPC citation?
Urhixidur 12:30, 2005 July 20 (UTC)
Hi Urhixidur. I see it's in http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/iau/lists/NumberedMPs70001.html (the Minor Planet Center website), as updated July 19. I think this is definitive. I'll go ahead and edit the relevant pages. Thanks for the update, Desertsky. -- Curps 12:44, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Curps, rapid and efficient reaction, thanks; also to Urhixidur for taking care; Desertsky , 2005 July 20th 14:45 GMT

OK, Desertsky. By the way, if you are in touch with Richard M. West, maybe suggest to him to name some of his later discoveries. :-) -- Curps 13:54, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Right, I will try to contact him; by the way, Richard is in retirement now, see you Desertsky

Curps, you missed the Meanings of asteroid names entries. I took care of those. Desertsky, for the aforementioned page, could you explain who this Biermann is?
Urhixidur 22:49, 2005 July 20 (UTC)

ref MP BIERMANN German astrophysicist Ludwig Biermann (1907-1986)

Desertsky; 2005 July 21 07:10GMT

Thanks for catching that omission, Urhixidur. I've now edited Meanings of asteroid names (73001-74000). We already have an article on Ludwig Biermann, but it's a bit of a stub, although there are external links to scientific journal articles that readers can use to learn much more about his career. -- Curps 10:25, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Curps, you have protected a page in which you are involved in an edit war. I believe this is counter to Wikipedia's stated policy. I have suggested an alternate version on the article's talk page, which I hope will satisfy all parties. Autopilots 19:49, August 26, 2005 (UTC)

You are mistaken. The multiple anon IPs were "Cyrius's personal vandal". For more detail, see your talk page, or various admin pages where this was discussed (page protection, etc). -- Curps 19:54, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Insert formula here</math>Hi! Could you add Azerbaijani schwa letter to Copywrightwarning!!

--Untifler 11:18, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

When adding a correction to a List of asteroids, such as the renaming of 6050 Moritablock to 6050 Miwablock (http://www.hohmanntransfer.com/mn/0507/stak3.htm), could you please apply the same correction to the corresponding Meanings of asteroid names page? It should be easy since each List of asteroids links to the matching Meanings page (and vice-versa) in the footer. (I've taken care of 6050, so no action is required)

Plautus came back

[edit]

...and you missed all the fun →Raul654 07:32, July 31, 2005 (UTC)

I noticed. He thoughtfully left a message up at the top of this talk page and others, in his usual genteel and restrained prose style. I monitored the situation, but it looked like things were well under control. Thanks for taking the lead on this. -- Curps 16:35, 31 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Minplan

[edit]

You do understand how haywire you've just sent several dozen pages on account of your edit to the template? Incorporating the square brackets to save time was the purpose of the template in the first place. Your change simply adds bulk to the markup needed in article bodies with no discernable benefits. I'm reverting for the time being, but I'm certainly open to further discussion -The Tom 00:54, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What on earth do you mean by "unacceptably obscure". By getting rid of the [[ and ]] (but leaving the pipe in the middle) you create a bastard-child of a template that only works when you add the [[ and ]] into the main article. This would have become apparent if you'd stopped for a second and checked before you launched into a converting spree. Check the talk page for alternatives. -The Tom 01:06, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks v. much. The template came about in the first place because duplicate articles with the subscripts rendered in unicode was becoming a bit of a problem, largely on account of users who insisted on subscripting. The template was a comprimise: it allowed real digits to continue being used in the namespace while preserving the subscript for display. Template:minplan2 was an outgrowth started by someone else that was never really my intent; as I said, it's easier to use in situations where there isn't a link. But in situations where there's a link, I darsay that the template is fairly intuitive to use and does shorten things rather substantially. -The Tom 01:25, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I've created two templates that act like minplan and minplan2: respectively Template:mpl ("minor planet link") and Template:mp ("minor planet"). I hope the mnemonics are now good enough, and that this makes for true shorthand. The notation textsubscript is now 3 characters longer than {{mp|text|subscript}}.

Air France Flight 358 intro needs help

Can you help with the intro? The two images side-by-side makes the intro difficult to read but I don't know to put one over the other. Thanks, hydnjo talk 02:46, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

capitalizing Flight when it's an incident

[edit]

Thanks for your edit for consistency on the uppercase flight when it's an airline incident. Now I see that all airline flight incidents share that Flight preceding the number. Any idea why this is the standard? Reward 09:04, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not certain why that was adopted as the standard. However, googling some famous flights like "Pan Am Flight 103" seems to show that most (though not all) other media do capitalize it. The most important thing is to have predictability and consistency within Wikipedia, so that when you type in a link, you don't inadvertently get a redlink merely because you chose a different capitalization standard. -- Curps 15:08, 5 August 2005 (UTC)
I agree; it's a good standard to follow. PA 103 on any other day was just Pan Am flight 103. But as of that infamous day, it became Flight 103. And those types flight numbers are generally retired by the airline as of the accident/incident. Reward 19:42, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the quick reply. I don't think many users regularly check the technical issue portion of the VP; I rarely (if at all) check the overall pump. Perhaps mentioning it at WP:AN would draw more attention? Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 22:35, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Neat tiling

[edit]

You said: A quick Google search showed "neat tiling" in use across a number of puzzle-oriented websites that don't seem to be associated with Karl Scherer. Objectively it does seem to be a generic term.

But

Google search for "neat tiling" - 215 results
Google search for "neat tiling" -wikipedia - 62 results
Google search for "neat tiling" -wikipedia -karl -scherer - 23 results

Of those 23, most use the phrase in the sense "the tiling is really neat" as in "impressive tiling" ["neat" being used as a synonym for "impressive"].

And this one is a mirror of wikipedia that doesn't admit it.

Hi Curps. You've currently got a neutral vote on this one, may I suggest you might like to consider changing to a keep+rename or merge, as expected even if the term is novel, the concept is valid - see latest comments. --zippedmartin 16:41, 18 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ursa Major moving group

[edit]

Thanks for your improvements to this article! I was very happy to see the Ken Croswell external link, as well as the new list of core and peripheral members of the moving group. --arkuat (talk) 21:03, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. The list of core stars was just cut and pasted from the duplicate article, whose author seems to have gotten it straight from the Ken Croswell link (which was apparently published in slightly abridged form in Astronomy magazine). -- Curps 21:12, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Merging articles is also work, and work that I find to be a chore. I always like to see other people doing it instead of me, especially when I haven't discovered the duplicate articles in question yet! --arkuat (talk) 02:38, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

WoW

[edit]

Hey Curps, thanks for helping out vs. WoW just now.

I just saw your post on the Village Pump, and second your suggestion: we really could use a better reversion tool for page moves (and throttling page moves for non-admins might be a good idea too). I added another suggestion about being able to see a new user list, since Willy's names are usually easily recognizable. Happy editing! Antandrus (talk) 19:49, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please release your AOL Block ----

[edit]

I'm an innocent bystander hit by your block (information below). Please be aware that any block of AOL users has consequences -- it blocks other people randomly assigned the same IP number. Please see my User Page -- User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection -- and release the block so I can get some work done. Thank you. WBardwin 04:49, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your user name or IP address has been blocked by Curps.

The reason given is this: Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Aesculapius75". The reason given for Aesculapius75's block is: "pagemove vandalism".

You can email Curps or one of the other administrators to discuss the block. You may also edit your user talk page if you wish. If you believe that our blocking policy was violated, you may discuss the block publicly on the WikiEN-l mailing list. Note that you may not use the "email this user" feature unless you have a Wikipedia account and a valid email address registered in your user preferences.

Your IP address is 207.200.116.6. Please include this address, along with your username, in any queries you make.

Thanks for the attention. Yes, I know its a software problem. User:JRM says it would be fairly easy to fix, but that it does not have any priority. I've been hit by two blocks today, so the frequency of my problem seems to be escalating. Maybe that reflects an increase in active vandals? If you are interested in this problem, please review my user page (see above) and weigh in on the situation with the powers that be. I would appreciate any consideration. WBardwin 05:13, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Are you still working? Can't even take a shower before being blocked again -- a new block this time. Three in less than twenty four hours. See below. Appreciate your help. WBardwin 06:07, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Workshop

[edit]

Could you fix Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Template/Workshop so it has a clear link to the evidence page. I think there is a way to use a name of page template to do that, but I'm not sure how to do it. Anyway if you can fix it please do so. Your point is well taken. We do want folks to put evidence in and it should be easy to find. Fred Bauder 17:16, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

Hi - could you unblock 219.93.174.110 - I'm at work and have to go and can't recall where the unblock page is... it's an IP address that legitimate users seem to use... Evercat 18:55, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It was actually an automatic block of an IP used by User:Stupidfuck, so would appear in the logs as a number e.g. #12345 or whatever (but I'm pretty sure these can still be unblocked by specifying the actual IP). Anyway, I'm trying to do it now, but things are pretty slow... Evercat 20:19, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. By the way, you can directly unblock an IP by going to [1] - a useful bookmark, perhaps. Evercat 20:28, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A voice of reason

[edit]

Your comments at Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Warren_Benbow were very good. However, I don't agree entirely that Geogre was correct in speedying. The original article was speediable under WP:CSD (notability was not asserted, after all) but the person's age (51) and words "producer and educator" were a clue that a simple Google search was in order. My concern is that we still bite the newbies far too often by deleting stubs and even articles that do no harm to Wikipedia. When Tony Sidaway recreates a speedied article on his own, any credit to the originator in the history disappears. I don't know what happens to their watch pages. Geogre was not "wrong" but like many other editors he clearly has expressed a view on numerous VfD votes that puts an emphasis on content rather than community (not to the exclusion of community, just a strong preference for content). I probably tend to spend too much time looking to find reasons to keep articles that I have absolutely no real interest in, just to turn the tide because I hate to see an editor's good faith contribution tossed out because he or she didn't know how to "assert notability". I don't see that as a "deletionist" vs. "inclusionist" issue (though the alignment is often the same) but rather a question of how open we want to be to expanding the base of contributors. Sorry for rambling, but I felt like adding my two cents worth... DS1953 05:57, August 18, 2005 (UTC)

I don't disagree with any of the individual points you made; I just see a different shade of gray when you put them all together. I am all for getting rid of vanity, advertising and other articles that should not be here. I just probably see the line a little differently (and, in honesty, not that differently when you look at the whole universe of articles). DS1953 13:50, August 18, 2005 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for showing interest. Willy on Wheels blocking

Curps - I noticed you were blocking a bunch of old Willy accounts because they don't appear in the block log. CRAZY

[edit]

Thanks for working on the CRAZY : movie page I had started. As for the listing of the songs, I thought it was pertinent as it is one of the things that attract people to that movie. (When has a Quebec movie got copyrights for original songs?) So, I wanted to fit in the link between Zac's story and David Bowie "Space Oddity". What do you think about it?

I added a paragraph about the music.
Actually, there was another movie that got rights to a song: Quebec-Montreal, with "This is the last day of our acquaintance" by Sinead O'Connor playing at the end. -- Curps 04:54, 20 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Curps,

I've closed the abovementioned VFD debate as 'no concensus'. I was the one responsible for handling the Karl-VFD, and I thought it would be good to give the benefit of the doubt given the circumstances back then.

I'd strongly encourage a merge/redirect personally myself, but that'll be up to the community to decide whether it should be a separate article. If you have any questions/concerns, please do not hesitate to drop a note on my talkpage.

- Best regards, Mailer Diablo 17:58, 20 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cremation of Care

[edit]

Hi - the VfD is still ongoing on this one, but it really isn't patent nonsense as such, even though it's nonsense. It's actually heading toward merger with Bohmemian Grove, and a lot of the crap has been taken out of it. In the interests of not raising any hackles or allegations of admin abuse (note that I was the one who nominated it for VfD in the first place), I'm going to undelete it. --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 02:09, August 21, 2005 (UTC)

I already undeleted it at 2:06, three minutes after deleting it and two minutes ahead of you. You're right that it doesn't fit the strict definition of patent nonsense and it's already in VfD. Just an overreaction to this user's vandalism of Bob Saget [2], I went looking for other things that looked like vandalism in his contribution history. -- Curps 02:21, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

[edit]

The Bob Saget article addition was not vandalism, one of Bob Saget's most famous quotes is his line "I sucked dick for coke." in Half-Baked. Also the Cremation of Care is not nonsense, look at the VfD for more information. -Wiffle0rz 02:11, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Whatever, but making that quote the caption to the photo [3] certainly was vandalism. After I reverted that I went looking through your contribution for other vandalism, found Cremation of Care and overreacted. -- Curps 02:24, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Range blocks

[edit]

I've never been able to figure out how to do range blocks, and I got tired of blocking each individual ID, so I did the /16, not really knowing what I was doing.  :( I also got tried of writing the same thing every time for each block, so I just went with PITA.  :)
