User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection

When I was an AOL subscriber, I often found myself blocked from contributing due to vandalism/disruptions caused by other editors working through the same IP number. In June and July 2006, programming efforts were increased and a significant step towards solving these inadvertant blocks was developed. The "block free" situation only continued for a short time however, and frequent autoblocks still prevent me from editing. My thanks to all the sympathetic adminstrators who release many of these blocks and allowed me to work. As of April 2007, I have been able to move to another internet provider.

The IP address, 207.200.116.69, is registered to cache-ntc-ab05.proxy.aol.com and is shared by multiple users....Caution should be used when blocking this IP, or similar IP's, or reverting its contributions without checking.

You've got me there. This is the second time it has happened. The AOL system randomly assigns numbers, and changes them even while you are in the middle of something. Both times it prevented me from editing articles, but I was able to access my work pages and post on admin's talk pages. I think that because of this edit I may have mistaken you for a particular user who, because of his previous bad pattern of behavior, has had a revert limitation applied by the arbitrators. reason for block

Done. Some prat yesterday was doctoring articles to include himself in them, notably adding himself in as HRH The Prince of Ireland in royal articles. When he wasn't stopping and was reverting all reverts I had to block him. If you find your yourself blocked like that - don't worry. I really don't know why I can post in some places and not others when the block comes in. Maybe the system reads my IP address in some places and my Wiki user info on another. I noticed it—I'm watching the pages because Linux is doing some heavy vandal-fighting—and unblocked the IP shortly afterwards, say 20:15 UTC. I interfered because I figured Linux might be gone for the weekend, as he hasn't been editing, and WBardwin and maybe others too would have an unconscionable wait. Perhaps you checked for the block after I'd already removed it? I was a little uncertain, since the range wasn't listed on Special:Blockip, but I checked with JRM on IRC and he told me to go ahead and unblock (and then he put the range on the list, too). The IP mentioned is an AOL cache proxy and should not be blocked for any length of time. I did some probing in the range and it seems to be wholly or mostly comprised of caches, so I added the range to the exclusion list. Blocks

Just to let you know, Evil Monkey isn't actually blocking your IPs; its a software feature that prevents blocked users from using sockpuppets. Evil Monkey blocked certian usernames earlier (and blocked at least one of them at my request) because of the havoc they were reeking. Part of blocking a user account involves the software recoring the IP the account was using, and then the software automatically blocks the IP if anyone from that IP trys to use it later. I wanted you to know so you woudln't think it was Evil Monkey's fault; he just blocked abusive user accounts (not IPs) and you're being affected by a software feature. -- Essjay · Talk 09:21, July 10, 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I am sorry about that -- normally if I'm blocking an IP address I can check it against a list of AOL proxies to be sure I'm not tarring way too many people with the brush. I've never before blocked a username and had the autoblocker block another logged-in user -- a real shame. Regarding your email

Thanks for contacting me. The problem you describe is almost impossible to remedy. As you may know, we have a list of IP's that should be blocked for 15 minutes or less. These numbers also include AOL addresses. In your case, the 207.200.116.0 address range is not included. For a range to be added to the list, it needs to be pretty big. I can find out how much of 207.* is owned by AOL and determine whether it is enough to include in the (small) list. We do not want this list to be large and we definitely will not make any exceptions, as everyone and their brother will then want to be excepted which is of course out of the question. I filed bug #2879 in direct response to this issue a while ago, but so far no developer has picked up on it. It seems obvious to me that this should be checked by software, as this is very straightforward to do. By contrast, admins seem to have an enormously hard time keeping track of the ranges, probably because blocking the bad guys is seen as more desirable than making sure the good guys can still access Wikipedia. It should be exactly the opposite, but nobody said being an administrator was easy.

For most vandals short blocks are just as effective as long ones; when the vandal sees the block they've had their fun and will go away. The vandals that come through rotating proxies are wholly unblockable to begin with; they "automatically" evade their blocks through the magic of changing IP addresses. No administrator has any business blocking addresses in the proxy ranges for more than 15 minutes; it hurts the innocent and doesn't keep the guilty out. JRM · Talk 17:04, 4 August 2005 (UTC)

In this case, Zoe was completely innocent. Administrators cannot see IP addresses of registered accounts, for privacy reasons. What happens here is another excellent feature: the autoblocker. If a registered user who edits under an AOL proxy is blocked, the associating IP address will be autoblocked for 24 hours on the next edit. That could either be the original vandal or an innocent bystander. The autoblocker knows no remorse, or restricted IP lists. This cannot be solved without updating the software. Unfortunately, JRM is correct. When an admin blocks a logged in User, there is no way for us to tell what their IP address is, and we can't tell if we're blocking an AOL account or any other. Are you still blocked? I went to unblock you but there's no indication that you're still blocked. As far as I know, if you are blocked, the only page you can edit is your own Talk page. Being able to edit my page should mean that you're not really blocked. Outside clarification: AOL users are rotated through caching proxies. This means they potentially get a new IP address with every edit they make. Some of these addresses may be blocked, while others are not, which is what causes the seemingly erratic behaviour. The flip side is that vandals coming through AOL can't be effectively blocked either—you can disable their accounts, but this won't stop them from editing completely. It is a major PITA, of course. Concerning blocks

I don't know if the suggestion has been floated before, but you could consider using IRC. There are administrators on the channel 24-7 and they will be happy to unblock you immediately. This is likely faster than posting on a talk page and hoping someone's available. Of course, I don't know if using IRC is an option for you.

Regretfully, I do not have the time to install the appropriate toolchain, learn PHP, plunge into the MediaWiki source and fix this problem myself, though I have the skill. I am cynically inclined to think that if any of the developers had an AOL account, it would be fixed much sooner... But who knows, it could be fixed tomorrow by some enterprising soul. OK, I think I've released the underlying IP block for Aesculapius75. The problem is, I blocked a user by username here, not by IP address. There was no way to know that this was an AOL user. It seems the Wikipedia software automatically blocks the underlying IP address whenever a username is blocked. I don't think there's any way to avoid this. -- Curps 04:58, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

I've been hit by two blocks today, so the frequency of my problem seems to be escalating. Maybe that reflects an increase in active vandals? I am an innocent victim of the vandal crusade. When you block an AOL user -- even if they have a Wiki account -- you block all the editors that are randomly assigned that IP number. I've been hit by three different blocks in less than 24 hours, yours being the latest (see below). As you know, I am a serious contributing editor and, as I like to sneak in 30 minutes to an hour of Wiki work several times during the day, these blocks are becoming very irritating. It is a software problem, according to User:JRM, and doesn't have much priority with the designers. Thanks -- I was finally able to add that paragraph to Martha Washington after trying, at intervals, all day. The ability to edit talk pages seems to be a funny quirk -- I can even sometimes edit talk pages on articles, but not the articles themselves. I've got a nifty solution. If you were an admin you'd be able to unblock yourself whenever you wanted :) I'm actually serious, I thought about it when I was unblocking you, but I've seen you do great work, like on Black Death and stuff around there that I've contributed to. Sorry to come to this so late; I've only just logged on (it's 09:05 here). It's odd that I've never been blocked in this way, though I'm also an AOL user (I sometimes edit from my University account, but I usually edit from home). Perhaps you have a concentration of vandals in your area (or is there a local school that uses AOL?).

Have you tried logging off and back on again, in order to get a new IP address? I assume that you have; in the case of range blocks that wouldn't work, of course. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 08:11, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

When you block individuals using the Autoblock software (see below), you also block innocent individuals who are randomly assigned the same IP number. This happens to me frequently. I've released the AOL block. It is unfortunate that you are so frequently blocked because of autoblocks (and we have requested repeatedly at Bugzilla for IP blocks to not affect logged in users), but please remember that autoblocks are set by the software and not by the blocking admin. (It just uses our name.) Admins do not get any notice when the autoblocker activates, we completely unaware of when it places a block, and we are powerless to stop it from doing so. We are not even able to see what IP has been blocked to determine whether it is an AOL IP or not; the block list masks autoblocked IP addresses with a code. We cannot see what IP the blocked user was using to be able to tell if it was an AOL IP.

Perhaps it would be helpful for you to complain to AOL about their use of constantly changing (sometimes from one edit to the next) proxies. If enough customers complain about the service, they will be forced to change. It would also be helpful for you to vote on Bug 550 at Bugzilla. AOL autoblock continued

Hi WBardwin -- sorry about the autoblock problem; that's actually the first time since I've been an admin that anyone has complained to me about being autoblocked; but I'm glad to see Essjay was on at the right time to get you unblocked (I had already turned in for the night). Unfortunately there's no way to know what IP address is behind a vandal, and no way to know whether it's static or dynamic. Vandals like "Mickey656" who hit people's user pages we tend to block on sight. From reading the discussion above it seems that it hits you with uncommon frequency, but that a bug report/fix request is in progress.

If it happens again, whether or not it was me who did it, send me a note and I'll unblock as soon as I get it. Sorry for the inconvenience again, and happy editing. Antandrus (talk) 14:59, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

But, sometimes, I can't even edit my own talk page. User:JRM seems to think that AOL's pattern of constantly shifting IP numbers allows some fluidity. Being able to write on talk pages does allow me to find helpful admins like you.

By the way, you may wish to reconsider the tone of the message you leave administrators. Your message seems to imply that you got blocked out of carelessness or that an AOL IP address was deliberately blocked. Merovingian is a longtime administrator and the suggestion that he desires to punish all AOL users isn't very nice, especially since it is just speculation. Please assume good faith. Perhaps you don't realize, but if you look at the block message you received, you will be able to see that Merovingian did not directly block the IP address, but rather blocked User:Kkkboi. He would not be able to know that Kkkboi was using AOL, as administrators do not have access to registered users' IP addresses, for privacy's sake. The way MediaWiki is configured, when someone is blocked, the IP address they are using is also automatically blocked. For instance, if someone were to block me right now, I would not be able to circumvent the block by logging out of Wikipedia and editing as an anonymous user or using a sockpuppet account. If the blocking administrator (or anyone else) examines the Special:Ipblocklist later, he may see autoblock entries (under his name!) although a code number is displayed instead of the IP address. So in short, we have no way of knowing what the IP number is unless the user tells us. When Merovingian blocked Kkkboi, he would not be able to know that Kkkboi was using AOL, and if he were to later examine the blocklist and notice the autoblocked entries, he would still have no way of knowing what the IP addresses were, much less determine their origin. Rather than suggest that the blocking administrator is incompetent or out to get AOL editors, you might consider leaving a polite message thanking them for helping to fight vandalism, but that you are using AOL and were caught by one of their autoblocks; would they mind unblocking the address? A similar message would suffice for a different administrator. Not only might this produce faster results, it will also help keep Wikipedia a pleasant place to edit. I'll take your note of chastisement under advisement -- be aware that the note you piggybacked on (whether on my talk page or a friendly admin's page) is less "polite" than the note I left the admin who initiated the block. Keep in mind that this is not a new experience for me. Also I have an entire archive of AOL blocking problems, none of them directed at me. See User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection. The IP address I am most often assigned has been included, at my request, on "the list" that should not be blocked for any length of time. I have had several helpful adminstrators intervene for me as we have tried to make the system/AOL interaction more efficient. However, vandalism gets more attention than regular editing and so AOL users are punished, no matter what polite wording we want to use. A couple of admins tell me the training they received in this area is minimal and that they only learn from interacting with users with problems -- like me. Thank you for your response. I realize this must be frustrating for you. Several months ago, while I was temporarily using dial-up before my cable modem was installed, I kept getting hit with a block intended for a problem user who also sometimes used my IP address—of course, since I am in administrator, the only incovenience to me was that I had to unblock the IP and report my actions on WP:AN/I, whereas you have to find someone to unblock you. I'm sorry you have to deal with this. That being said, I'd like to ask you not to take your frustrations out on well-meaning users. It's good that you got the IP address listed on the block page, and of course new ways of dealing with vandalism from AOL users will always be welcome, due to the unusual way AOL assigns IP addresses. But that's not really relevant here—I'm not sure you fully understood my message. Merovingian did not block an IP address, AOL or otherwise. He blocked User:Kkkboi. Unbeknownst to him, Kkkboi was using AOL—indeed, there would be no way for Merovingian to know this; administrators do not have access to registered users' IP addresses. Later, Kkkboi or someone else (possibly you) tried to edit from the same IP address (logged in or anonymous). The software recognized the IP address as one used by a recently blocked user and so it automatically blocked the IP address. There is currently no way to disable this. So at this point Merovingian has no idea that an IP address has been autoblocked under his name. Even if he for some reason visits the IP blocklist, he will see something like (for example) "07:49, December 15, 2005, RoyBoy blocked #68550 (expires 07:49, December 16, 2005) (Unblock) (Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Hiveman". The reason given for Hiveman's block is: "Spam".)". Note that the IP address is not visible. At this point, aside from the blocked users, no one has any idea that an AOL IP address was involved. There is no way for them to know. Even if Merovingian was wondering "Hmm, I hope Kkkboi wasn't using AOL to edit and I hope the software didn't then autoblock an AOL IP address", it would not be possible for him to find out. This has nothing to do with punishing AOL users. The point is, Merovingian acted absolutely appropriately. A user was creating problems and he blocked him. We can't stop blocking people because there is a possibility they are using AOL. Unfortunately, the only recourse is for you to ask to be unblocked. There is no easy solution to this, and it will happen again. It might happen the next time I block a registered user. And you'll have to go through the same thing again. But it's not the blocking administrator's fault. As Bishonen remarked, it is the fault of the software for not letting us disable autoblocking and the fault of AOL for continually reassigning IP addresses. You can thank the administrator for doing his job properly. It's not his fault you got autoblocked. Accusing people of ignorance or deliberate overblocking is counterproductive, since there is no behavior the administrator can modify for next time. And again, it does little to promote a productive atmosphere on Wikipedia. I realize the concept of autoblocking, and that administrators aren't necessarily deliberately blocking your IP address, might be difficult to understand. Thank you for your well-thought-out message. You're absolutely right; there are many of us who wish we could disable the autoblocker, especially for specific blocks, and if there is some way I can assist in promoting that change, I would like to. You have every right to be frustrated by being hit with blocks not intended for you. And it may very well be that some of those are by administrators blocking an AOL IP address for too long. I just wanted to make sure you realized that not all of these blocks are of AOL IP addresses, that an any administrator, including those you contacted for assistance, might be the one inadvertantly blocking you next time—and calling them a "dingbat" likely won't be productive. Incidentally, regarding your comments on User talk:Bishonen#AOL Blocks, you are correct: when I checked my watchlist and noticed a user leaving comments with the edit summary "Release me!" on multiple administrators' talk pages, naturally I stopped by to see if I could help. The problem had been solved by that point, but I hoped I could help clear up some misconceptions—Merovingian's an easy-going guy, but there are many users who might get upset at being insulted or criticized at something they have no control over. Incidentally, it is quite difficult to get on my bad side: I am certainly not angry or upset with you, and I apologize if my tone was overly censorious. The next time you get inadvertantly blocked, you may contact me as well, if you wish. A couple other options: check recent changes and leave a message for an administrator you recognize, or perhaps better would be the block log (or the IP block list, although you should of course ignore the autoblock entries, since there is no guarantee that administrator has been on Wikipedia recently). Another option is the IRC channel, although I've never used IRC and am not familiar with how it works. Registered users' IP addresses are private and administrators do not have access to them. Let's go over MediaWiki's ever so helpful and privacy respecting block system again, and why it's hardly optimal.

What happened here is that DragonflySixtyseven blocked a registered user who was being an ass. Which one is impossible to tell in retrospect. Said registered user then tried editing while logged out (clever!). In response, the autoblocker kicked in and blocked that address for 24 hours. Now, where is that address in the block list?

Nowhere, because "to respect privacy" (we all know how sensitive IP addresses are, especially of AOL proxies) IP addresses are obfuscated. So it will have been something like #XXXXX, with X a digit. If I'm not mistaken, WBardwin should have gotten a message that told him he was blocked by DragonflySixtyseven, but I do not know the reason it specified. The system should provide a reason that looks like this: "autoblocked because your IP address has been used recently by [[User:Foo]]". With this block reason in hand administrators can look in the logs and find the obfuscated IP address that's targeted by this. Without this, they cannot. You could try to find the block based on the time of the message, but this is unreliable.

Who is to blame? The developers. There are at least three ways of solving this problem, some complementary:

• If the autoblocker blocks someone, make it clear the autoblocker is doing it and not the administrator involved in the original block. Make this abundantly clear in messages, too. Add the time of the original block.
• Implement a blacklist of addresses the autoblocker must never block automatically, or at most a few minutes, just like administrators are required to do.
• Turn off the stupid autoblocker. If people log out and continue to edit, require administrators to do the re-blocking themselves. The autoblocker has proven to be incompetent. Apropos privacy: why should a blocked user who tries to evade the block have his IP address kept secret? You forfeit your right to have your IP address kept a secret when you violate our policies. Anonymous users are treated no better.

In the meantime, the most productive "codes of conduct" for everyone involved are:

• If you're an innocent user hit by a block, ask the administrator (or an administrator) to unblock you. Mention your IP, the block reason, and the fact that you are using an AOL proxy. Do not imply the administrator must have blocked you directly and ignored the AOL block list; it's very well possible they didn't. To play it safe, you can contact an administrator of which you know they understand all this. You don't necessarily need the original admin to do it.
• If you're an administrator, educate yourself on proxies, the autoblocker, and How Stuff Works (tm). The last thing we need is ignorant admins going "I don't understand, I didn't block you, should I unblock you?" See if the IP specified really is an AOL proxy. If it is, unblock without question. Simply enter the IP address with a block time of 0, this should release the block regardless of how it came to be, and you won't need to delve into the blocked addresses list. (Disclaimer: I don't know if this works; I "seem to recall" it does/did.)
• If you're a developer, just go on doing whatever it is that you're doing. There aren't enough of you anyway to fix these things, so don't bother. Thanks for the autoblocker, though; it's a real help. JRM · Talk 16:28, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

If I recall, I tried that once (just "unblocking" the IP address), but it got immediately re-autoblocked when the autoblocked user tried to edit. The AOL block was for 15 minutes and was applied to a user who has made legal threats against another user and had his account blocked indefinitely for doing so. He has been using AOL IPs all night to post new threats against the user he first made the threat to and then against me. The block will have expired by now but I have had to protect his blocked user account to stop him going there as an IP to post more legal threats. I know blocking AOL can be a pain but when it comes to a user threatening others there is no option. At this stage WP needs to get tough with AOL over their way of organising IPs. It is bad enough when their 'we don't give a shit' attitude to complaints means that WP has to face constant vandalism. But when people can then use AOL IPs to threaten people, that is another thing entirely. The user in question seems to be one of the perrenial nutters who claims 'ownership' of an article and then threatens to sue anyone who edits 'his' article in a way they themselves do not approve of. There is nothing actionable about it. But it was ruled some time ago that users making legal threats were to be automatically blocked from WP. That has now been the policy for some time. If the claim is of a claim over content of the WP (ie, a copyright infringement, etc) no ban is imposed, but the threat based on to the foundation. If however a user tries to force their opinion on someone else by threatening to sue another user, that immediately results in a ban. Today's AOL block

Please be aware that IP numbers used by AOL are not static, but rotate between multiple users. Every time these IP numbers are blocked, you will impact innocent editors. And, it is likely, that your vandal has simply moved on. This problems is addressed by having "a list" of numbers which should not be blocked by administrators for any length of time. Hello,

We generally try to keep AOL blocks short. However, in this case the block was incorrectly set at 24 hours. I investigated and found that in a key piece of internal documentation used by admins, the netmask range was specified in an inconsistent way (207.200.0.0/18 rather than 207.200.64.0/18), which caused me to set an incorrect length for the block. My apologies. I have fixed the wording of the internal documentation. The address has been unblocked, any future blocks on it should be much shorter. -- Curps 00:10, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

This problem is bound to happen again, due to the round robin method AOL employs to assign IP addresses. My employer sets up (and pays for) the system I use at home and allows me to often work at home as well. So, system contents must closely match the office. Is this a Windows-based operating system? If the laptop is clamped down such that it will not allow additional software (such as Mozilla or Firefox) to be installed, try the HTTPS method using Internet Explorer instead the next time you are autoblocked. To answer your question, Clown, I will respond here as with an autoblock I can no longer post on other's talk pages. First -- the "list" includes a recommendation for only 15 minutes blocks for shared IP addresses. 24 hours is just unreasonable, and I would think any admin should release that block. Second, in regard to the link/suggestion you provided, it would be encouraged for me to to consult with the techs at work for approval to use that access, primarily because of security concerns or because it would require me, not the company, to register with the site. I have to keep a list of all registered sites. I haven't yet consulted with them. And, as I am word oriented and resist tech talk, clarification of the "instructions" would be very useful before I made the request. For example: My response to the following is "Huh?" https is a URI scheme which is syntactically identical to the http: scheme normally used for accessing resources using HTTP. Using an https: URL indicates that HTTP is to be used, but with a different default port and an additional encryption/authentication layer between HTTP and TCP. So -- release anyone? Your question on AOL/IP Block solution

In answer to your question, Clown, I initially responded on my talk page as an autoblock normally restricts me from posting on other's talk pages. So a modified copy here. First -- the "list" includes a recommendation for only 15 minutes blocks for shared IP addresses. 24 hours is just unreasonable, and I would think any admin should have released the first block. Second, in regard to the link/suggestion you provided, my computer is owned, maintained and secured by my employer. I am very strongly encouraged to consult with the techs at work for approval to use this type of access, primarily because of security concerns or because it would require me, not the company, to register with the site. I got permission to register with Wikipedia in the first place, and I would certainly have to receive approval for Firefox. The Firefox browser is not a prerequisite for a secure connection to Wikipedia. The problem is that autoblocks, by default, are for 24 hours and it is not always readily apparent that it is affecting AOL. If you are running Windows or MacOS, then I assume you already have Internet Explorer installed. If so, please try connecting to https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Special:Userlogin the next time you are impacted by an autoblock, and let me know if this is a successful work around. If your employer allows you to edit Wikipedia on their corporate property, then they would likely be happier to know you are doing it in a secure fashion. AOL Block and Bypass Attempt

I was autoblocked from editing and, after receiving verbal permission from my employer's computer security people, tried using the secure access: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Special:Userlogin. There were mixed results. Even after registering and copying the certificate, each page on Wikipedia called up a security alert on the AOL/Company system. Each time, on each page, I had to use three keystrokes and two screens to verify that I recognized a security threat and authorized the system to access that individual page. You can see that this really slowed things up. Even so, there was one Wiki article and User:Can't sleep, clown will eat me's user page that the system completely refused to let me access. And, it significantly alters the format, type face and layout of my User page. Odd? Overall, cumbersome and slow, but at least I could run through my watch list for vandals. I'm sorry to say this, but we've been experiencing a pretty bad vandal attack from the IP range 207.200.116.0/24 ... it's been going on for longer than a day now. As soon as we unblock it continues again at a rate of many vandalisms per minute. I highly suggest that you get in contact with AOL and complain about how your quality of service is being affected by their refusal to do anything useful to either fix their proxy servers or deal with problem users. --Cyde↔Weys 04:33, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

I've talked to "them" several times. "They" are really very low level workers and really don't care. Their job is just to see that you are successfully online. The big bosses who make decisions aren't available and I suspect really wouldn't care either-- their system works for the vast majority of their users and sites. If they lose me (which my employer will not allow), they'll pick up six people to replace me. So what leverage would you suggest I try? My sincerest apologies; however, the 207.200.116.* range has recently become a victim of a long term DoS vandalbot attack, and I'm afraid this entire range will likely be blocked quite frequently in the days to come. You may want to see this for more information. Essentially, the second the block expires the vandal is right back at it, editing at very rapid rates and causing a lot of headaches for many. I honestly don't know what to say--it's a pickle. If you have a library or a local internet café you could go to in order to edit, that may be a solution. Oh sorry, a Denial of service vandal is a vandal intent upon disabling access to a site to others such as yourself. Basically, the guy knows all of AOL's weaknesses and is exploiting them to ensure that no AOL user will be able to edit Wikipedia. Either the devs are going to have to wip together something clever, which they are supposedly working on--a block the disables only anons and not established users--or AOL is going to have to get off their lazy asses and do something about this guy to fix the problem. I've been notified that User:AmiDaniel has been using me as an example of an AOL user whose problems are often quickly solved. I respectfully disagree. Please note that my time editing has been significantly reduced in the last 10 days. I sign in and manage one or two edits, am blocked, move to the http bypass, edit once or twice and am blocked again. These blocks may be targeted at the one or two professional AOL/IP vandals active at the moment, and I am sympathetic, but that doesn't solve my problems or allow me and others like me to edit. AOL is not my choice of provider, but it is my employer's choice and it allows me to work from home and care for family responsibilities. But I doubt AOL will ever address this problem as it would require a redesign of their very profitable network. So, developers at Wiki are my best hope. I'll check for the autoblock in a second, but just so you know, Tim Starling has recently adjusted the blocking system so that it's possible to block only anonymous (logged out editors), which will hopefully resolve your problems with autoblocks. Incredibly happy to announce that Bug 550 has been implemented, is live, and the AOL blocks should now be dead, at least the vast majority. Well, thanks for the effort but you didn't really answer the question. I understand all the perameters of the AOL autoblock issue. I've been working with administrators for months, from a users point of view, on ways we can solve the problem. I avoid templates whenever possible on general principle as I think they are ugly and actually block rather than promote communication. For example, the prepacked message above frankly says exactly nothing. But that leads, of course, to the problem of knowing how to use them when they are required. I don't follow instructions willingly or with good grace.

But you said I was now using the wrong template. I'm sorry about that, as it has been extremely useful. Why is it wrong? and where is the right one? Is it the phrase listed in our conversation above? I'll paste that into my autoblock section - and give it a try. Or if necessary, I'll go back to my old habit of screaming for help from familiar admins. The old way isn't wrong, just clumsy. MediaWiki:Blockedtext now generates the right code for you, so you don't have to copy and paste from your talk page. You can copy and paste straight from the block screen. {{unblock-auto}} lets us unblock you in seconds instead of a minute or two (per case) without us ever having to reach for the keyboard.
