Copyright violations in Draft:Nathaniel Bartlett
[edit]Hi Connecticut Puritan, I saw your posting at the Teahouse and went to have a look at your article. I was actually on the brink of moving it straight to mainspace, as it's well-written and well-referenced, when I did a little check for copyright violation. Oops... here's the result: [1] - the red-marked text was identified as a copyright violation. It looks as if you copied a large amount of material from the History of Redding website.
That, I'm sorry to say, is not permitted. Text in articles has to be original formulations, and can't be duplicated form other people's work. That is because we release our material under a license that allows anyone to reuse it for whatever purpose, including commercial. If we featured material that is copyvios of existing text, we would in essence be telling everyone to steal and broadcast the original author's creations. Can't do it; the only exception is text that is already released as free-to-reuse-by-everyone, and the History of Redding website makes no mention of such a thing.
Before this becomes suitable for main article space, the copied sections will have to be restated in your own words. Looks like a bit of work; sorry about that. But copyright is one thing that admins take very seriously here, and if the article went out in this state, it would probably be deleted within a day. Nathaniel Bartlett moved to draftspace
[edit]I wasn't joking in what I said above... this is almost a complete copyvio, and can't go into mainspace like this. Bkissin, don't you even run these things through Earwig??? Elmidae (talk · contribs) 21:14, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
Copyvio report again, just in case: [2] --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 21:16, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
- Ummm... wow. So if I run it now, in current draft form, the detector completely fails to detect anything [3] - presumably because of the AfC header. Bugger me sidewise with a coracle. Apologies, Bkissin. But man, that is not encouraging any trust in the tool :[ --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 21:23, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
- Apology accepted Elmidae. You were right, I didn't put this through Earwig before accepting, that's definitely on me. However, when I looked at the list on User:SQL/AfC-ORES it didn't even show up. Bkissin (talk) 22:03, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
Hi Connecticut Puritan (sorry for monopolizing your talk page to this extent ) - I was just made aware of something that I should have considered: are you the original author of the text at History of Redding? In that case I can understand why you thought you could just use it here! However, I'm sorry to say that's not the case. The copyright clause applies even to material that you created and published elsewhere yourself, if it has not been expressly released under a suitable license. If you wish you can release this text in this manner (making it everyone's free-to-play toy for evermore :); it takes a little bit of paperwork but people do it all the time. Let me know if you want to do this; it might be less work than rephrasing the lot for purposes of the Wikipedia article. (I've stuck a copyvio remainder at the top of the draft for the time being, just in case. This can be removed once the issue has been dealt with.) Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 17:48, 19 May 2019 (UTC)Did You Know
[edit]Now that the article about Bartlett is back in mainspace you might be interested in submitting a "Did you know?". These are interesting tidbits from new articles which appear on the Main Page which gets millions of hits a day. Articles in DYKs can receive thousands of visits as a result. While I am not an expert in this process, I might be able to help you if you are interested and have any questions about the process. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 17:53, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
Please keep in mind that this is an international encyclopaedia written in English, it is not a US encyclopaedia and as such "our nation" could be any country in the world where the reader is. The whole second sentence of the lead needs to be recast in a more neutral tone or probably best just deleted. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 20:51, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
