Commandant Frank Bestbier of 1 SAI

[edit]

Hi I see you have removed my add to 1 SAI under notable commanders. Commandant is historically significant. He is one of the initiators of Mechanised Infantry of which 1 SAI was the first. He is also the first commander of 61 Mech the unit which eventually operationalised the theory taught at 1 SAI. Your removal makes no sense whatsoever.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hello Conlinp,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Escal' Atlantic for deletion, because it's too short to identify the subject of the article.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Celestinesucess (talk) 12:21, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Contests

[edit]

User:Dr. Blofeld has created Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Contests. The idea is to run a series of contests/editathons focusing on each region of Africa. He has spoken to Wikimedia about it and $1000-1500 is possible for prize money. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Steve Tshwete, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Democratic Alliance. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Routes

[edit]

Thank you for your contributions to the metropolitan routes of Johannesburg and regional South African routes. As someone who spent a fair bit of time on them a few years back, it is good to come past and see someone carry on the labour. I know the pain of looking at multiple mapbooks and online sources and getting conflicting routes. I don't know if you've seen what the M7 looks like per a late 80s Mapstudio map, but it's not the same as more recent ones at all! Garble (talk) 08:56, 3 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Garble: Thanks for you comments. Do route signs still exist in Johannesburg? Hahahaha. Is my M7 route wrong?. Conlinp (talk) 10:55, 4 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No, but it was rerouted at some point (probably when they deprecated the M6? The current M6 is I think reused...) I haven't been based in Johannesburg since 2012, but route signs are not well-marked. I'm now in Cape Town, which is better, but not great. There are just as many mysteries in the Cape Town Metropolitan Route schema... !! Garble (talk) 16:18, 4 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming African Place Names

[edit]

Hello Conlinp,

You have expressed interest in the discussion of renaming African places in the past and was wondering if you could give your input on my post in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject South Africa/Politics task force. Trying to increase engagement to potentially reach a consensus of some sort on this highly controversial issue. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Desertambition (talkcontribs) 02:10, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey I remembered you were South African and wondered what you thought of the linked article, I don't believe it meets notability, and upon cleaning it up, it doesn't have much in the way of references. Any help is appreciated. Nswix (talk) 22:13, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Nswix: Did a literature search of SA news publications and searched the Financial Times. Nothing of note to increase the article's notability. Probably will be notable if he inherits his fathers wealth. Sorry I cant help further, and reluctantly agree, probably needs deletion. Regards. Conlinp (talk) 11:17, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania 2022 in South Africa

[edit]

Wikimania 2022 is almost here (11-14 August 2022) and will be held entirely online this year with the exception of a number of local mini-Wikimania's for local community members. I just wanted to let you know that two local Wikimania mini-events will be happening in South Africa; one in Cape Town and one in Johannesburg. Participants will be able to attend both the international event from these local events. If you are interested, available and in the area at the time we would be delighted to have you join us. For more information please checkout the South Africa mini-event page here. You can also fill out the interest form here.

P.S. I know I already told you at the last community meetup but I thought you would like to have the links as well. :-) Discott (talk) 09:38, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Discott: Will try and attend some events. Thanks for the reminder. Conlinp (talk) 11:19, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Citing the "Route Section" on Road Articles

[edit]

Hi there.

I wanted to bring to your attention the last topic I brought up on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Highways yesterday, where I was talking about certain editors erasing the "Route" section of road articles because not a single paragraph contains a citation. If any paragraph would have a citation, they would leave that one and erase the rest, leaving the section as Incomplete, forgetting that we are describing a route from start to finish.

Overtime, I became very-convinced that only the "Introduction" on route articles needed a citation, just like we did on R511 (South Africa), M11 (Johannesburg) & N18 (South Africa) but a certain editor has proved me wrong. I guess that rule is only being enforced on "some" articles.

Recently, I created the M18 (Pretoria) article in the same format as many South African Roads but when I checked it out next, I found only the first sentence was left under the "Route" section while the rest was erased. Who starts a story without finishing it & is this ethical? Then, I also went to check the M6 (Pretoria) article and found the "Route" section erased.

So, is a GPS (such as OpenStreetMap and Google Maps) the best website to use as a "source" for a "Metropolitan Route"? Because I can't seem to find proper ones for that road classification. Chils Kemptonian (talk) 12:51, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Chils Kemptonian: Hi Chils. Yes, I am aware of the conversations on the Highways talk page. Asked a similar question years ago and yes it should be cited to some degree. Give me a few weeks and I will restore and cite your work. We will the add a more descriptive landscape statement the route passes through. Regards. Paul. South African Border War infobox

[edit]

Hi Conlinp,

I’m reaching out because there’s currently a discussion underway to strike references to supporting actors (like the Soviet Union and other socialist states) from the infobox for South African Border War. This seems disingenuous given the degree of the USSR’s involvement in that conflict, up to and including Soviet deaths and injuries during SADF combat operations. If you have any input, I’d appreciate it if you could weigh in here.

Thanks! Katangais (talk) 18:37, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your RfA questions

[edit]

Hi, please consider whether the question you are adding to RfAs in the current election, "How strong is your password for Wikipedia?", is appropriate. Unless you're expecting users to publicly identify that their passwords are poor and easily guessable I don't know what you're looking to gain from this. Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:33, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I was also concerned seeing this question asked at a number of RfAs. I'd be concerned about any hints given about a user's password. I'd even go so far as saying these questions should, ideally, be removed. Hey man im josh (talk) 18:40, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Appreciated, and thank you for participating in the new process! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:51, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What does Authority control mean? Jokkmokks-Goran (talk) 00:23, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Jokkmokks-Goran: Hello. Authority control attached to the end of an article identifies if the subject matter is listed in directories or library catalogues around the world. Regards. Conlinp (talk) 09:35, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
