Alberto Blanco, Mexican poet entry

Thank you for your advice. I have worked diligently (as a first-time wikipedian) to make Blanco's entry meet the standards of wikipedia. My problem now (but there may be others although I took care of the disambiguation issue and I worked on references)...is posting a photo/image. My sense from bouncing from link to link is that I need to establish an account with the wikimedia commons and then upload an appropriate image there to later be moved over to the Blanco page??? I have a photo but I did not take it; the photographer wants credit (not on Blanco's page, but in the Wiki commons.) I am not sure how to proceed. I guess the worst case scenario would be that the photo is rejected. I am not in the position to fly to Mexico City to take photos of Senor Blanco (aka no funds). My connection to his work has been as a literary translator (aka impoverished.)

Again, thanks for your first words of wisdom (even if a lot was boiler-plate), and, if you can, let me know this: HOW HARD should it be to upload to a photo to a page? Am I just getting too uptight about the wiki-rules? I mean, are there people who do this in just a matter of minutes?

Thank you, expert, Millerowski (talk) 00:37, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Chilean-Australian. Resolution sought

ATTN: PelleSmith, Pippu d'angelo, Itsmejudith, Blnguyen, Angusmclellan, Conman, SQL, Ned Scott and AussieLegend

I think it is in all our interests that we resolve the debate on the cited number of Chilean-Australians.

TeePee and myself have presented our arguments and rebuttals for some days now.

I thank you for your attention to the issues, and especially for bearing with us in this challenging debate. While I can not speak for TeePee, I would assume he is equally grateful.

But now is the time to get this debate finally finished.

I have drafted a comprimise version here (15:58, 17 May 2008 ) which provides references to the Jupp 2001 estimate and the ABS 2006 ancestry estimate, with caveats attached which explain their respective difficiencies.

Now I respectfully ask if you could pass judgement on my text for this version, with a support or oppose provided on Talk:Chilean Australian. If you have not responded by 20 May I will presume you have elected not to take part.

I myself, and I would hope and expect TeePee, will abide by your ruling.

Thank you. Kransky (talk) 16:36, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

"Although I do think it is in all our interest that we resolve the debate, I still think there are some issues needed to be addressed. I am equally as grateful as Kransky for all your time and effort but do not agree with his revision especially since it still contains information which has been referenced by an invalid reference which has been the major issues I have had with him throughout the whole history of this article. My version here provides references to the Embassy 2006 estimate and the ABS 2006 ancestory estimate. I respectfully ask you view my edit first as I asked first and tell me what problems you have with it before viewing Kransky's revision. (This was the terms I agreed to Kransky before promising I would not revert your revision, as you did not respect my request and want your revision to be viewed first I do not see why I should respect your request and let the article remain in it's current revision especially since you have provided that invalid reference which you have been doing for months). Thankyou TeePee-20.7 (talk) 17:21, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Alberto Blanco, Mexican Poet

Thank you for your May 18 advice. I didn't realize it was there till today. In the meantime, I bought "Wikipedia: the Missing Manual" hoping to solve my photo problem. I also (today) discovered the IRC and asked questions about posting photos. I got the photographer of the Blanco photo to send an email following the template saying the photo was hers, it was free, she just wanted credit if people used it. I forwarded it to permissions and got this reply back:

We have received the permission for the image(s) and have made the necessary modifications to the Image page(s).

Thank you for providing this to us, and for your contribution to the Wikimedia Commons.

Yours sincerely, Michelle Kinney

The photo is in the commons as Alberto Blanco, Mexican Poet. (I put some categories)

BUT, following the instructions I found in the WIki Missing Manual (i.e Go to article, click on edit page, and add:

File:Nameofimage.ext
caption text

)

I couldn't get the picture to appear. I looked at the tutorial you pointed me too, but it didn't help me.

(I noticed that none of the current "hot" contemporary American poets have photos on their articles (for ex., the current US Poet Laureate, Charles Simic or the former, Charles Wright, or many years ago, Mark Strand. should I just give up? (I hate giving up!))

Thanks again for your advice. If you can further help me, much appreciation to you.

Alberto Blanco, Mexican poet entry

Ah, simplicity! Profound and humble thanks...the book I was using said "NAME" of photo. I thought the name was Alberto Blanco, Mexican poet. Live and learn. I should do some more of this so that I won't have used your valuable time for just one article. I noticed that the entry for Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (Mexican poet, 17th century) needs a lot of work although it is not a stub and does have photos...Thanks, gracias, etc. Millerowski (talk) 20:30, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Alberto Blanco, Mexican Poet

Hi, I'm in trouble again. I translated the article into Spanish and am having trouble with Spanish wiki. But that's not what I am writing about. I went to the Commons to make sure the photo of Alberto B. was still there (so I could put it in the spanish wiki), and the photo is there, but it says "this page does not exist. You can crate it." Do I need to create a page for the photo? I already got permission, etc., filled out the initial image questionnaire. Shouldn't I be able to simply move the image to Spanish wiki by using the formula/template? Thanks again. Millerowski (talk) 23:03, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Please ignore May 30 Alberto Blanco questions

Hi, Confusing, I got some help from a Spaniard. A question about the English Blanco article: Would it be better if I made a disambiguation page? Since there are only 2 ABs, I didn't think it necessary. Also, do you think it needs section subheadings? I think it's too short for that. Thanks so much. Millerowski (talk) 20:24, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

hey

About the user Grawp, i think i know why he is constantly making user pages (or sock puppets). I think he just goes over to a friends house and makes accounts there, then uses them since their not blocked. My suggested solution: Block the IP Address that he keeps using at his friends house. Then, he has nowhere to go. Thats just a thought, idk. discuss it on my talk page if you want. Advice on getting non-weaselly?

Hello--I'm involved with the edit dispute which you commented on here. Not talking about the behavior in the dispute, but the substance of your comment there...

I'd love to get non-weaselly, but in this instance I don't see how to do so without becoming terribly cumbersome, or even misleading. To put things in perspective (and be clear about where I'm coming from), I consider it a clear fact that most people who bother to think about such things think about Adam Smith as the father of economics. There are certainly exceptions, and the exceptions often arise among people who think more deeply about it. I myself have no opinion on whether he is the father of economics or not, I just don't know. But it does seem like an important point, it's where the guy's place in history is and making clear there's a distinction between him, and say Malthus.

So then, the point to be made is "Adam Smith is generally regarded as the father of (modern) economics." The question is, how to say it? If we wrote, "Economists X, Y, and Z regard Adam Smith as the father of economics." that really wouldn't capture it, and could be rebutted by three other economists who (while in the small minority) honestly feel differently. "Most economics textbooks give Adam Smith credit for being the father of economics." Maybe better? Still seems awkward to me, and doesn't seem to capture it.

Anyway, it seems tricky. I'm tempted to appeal to exceptions, but this is the first time it's come up for me, so I'm hoping you'll have suggestions which, upon reading, will seem the obvious solution.

Thanks! CRETOG8(t/c) 00:43, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

(per your talk page responding here) It's a good question, and not fully answered at WP:WEASEL. Depending on how strongly people object to the "weasel" form, the simplest option is to leave it as it is, but to append multiple citations to it to give an idea as to who actually says it. The next step up is to use something like "Many economists, such as/including X{cite}, Y{cite} and Z{cite}, regard ...". If there are any particularly significant dissenting views, or people who clarify their statements (e.g. "Smith is the father of modern economics, but only by virtue of ...") then you could leave the original "many" line in the lead section, with or without cites, and discuss the whole thing in a new section of the article. In fact, it looks like it's already going that way a bit, since the father thing is mentioned again in the Legacy section. Personally, I'd move all the citations down there, and maybe just expand a little on the inclusion/exclusion of "modern". That keeps your lead section clean, and gives all the juicy details in the article, just like it's supposed to be. Besides that I'm not sure how much you can do. I do agree that most of the problem is not the statement itself, but the minor yet vocal opposition to it. Confusing Manifestation(Say hi!) 03:59, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. No giant flash of insight, but some stuff to mull on. I like the idea of moving the cites down into the body, though. I think that'll have to wait until the argument dies down, though. CRETOG8(t/c) 04:05, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Motto of the day

Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.

When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.

If you have any questions, please let me know, or post on the project's talk page. I'm looking forward to reading your comments on the suggested mottos, and any additional suggestions you'd like to make. Until then, happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:41, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Campaigning

Hi - you seem to have a subpage which is being used for campaigning and linking to a petition. While people have latitude with their talkpage, using them for soapboxing is generally considered to be a bad thing. --Cameron Scott (talk) 23:34, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

just so you know how I came across it - there was a discussion over at AN about people linking to petition sites so I had a look who was hosting external links to certain sites. Thanks. --Cameron Scott (talk) 10:15, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Main Page redesign

The Main Page Redesign proposal is currently conducting a straw poll to select five new designs, before an RFC in which one will be proposed to replace the Main Page. The poll closes on October 31st. Your input would be hugely appreciated! Many thanks, PretzelsTalk! 09:20, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful comments!

Of all the responses I received, yours was most thoughtful and not insulting that I would try such a project with my students. It will take me hours and hours I presume to really "come up to speed" but I'll keep trying.

Thanks very much, Edprof5302(Edprofessor5302 (talk) 16:17, 7 November 2008 (UTC))
