- Please bear these points in mind while editing Wikipedia
- Respect copyrights – do not copy and paste text or images directly from other websites.
- Maintain a neutral point of view – this is one of Wikipedia's core policies.
- Take particular care while adding biographical material about a living person to any Wikipedia page and follow Wikipedia's Biography of Living Persons policy. Particularly, controversial and negative statements should be referenced with multiple reliable sources.
- No edit warring or abuse of multiple accounts.
- If you are testing, please use the Sandbox to do so.
- Do not add troublesome content to any article, such as: copyrighted text, libel, advertising or promotional messages, and text that is not related to an article's subject. Deliberately adding such content or otherwise editing articles maliciously is considered vandalism; doing so will result in your account or IP being blocked from editing.
- Do not use talk pages as discussion or forum pages as Wikipedia is not a forum.
The Wikipedia tutorial is a good place to start learning about Wikipedia. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and discussion pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~ (the software will replace them with your signature and the date). Again, welcome! Adding references can be easy
[edit] Hello! Here's how to add references from reliable sources for the content you add to Wikipedia. This helps maintain the Wikipedia policy of verifiability.
Adding well formatted references is actually quite easy:
- While editing any article or a wikipage, on the top of the edit window you will see a toolbar which says "Cite". Click on it.
- Then click on "Templates".
- Choose the most appropriate template and fill in as many details as you can. This will add a well formatted reference that is helpful in case the web URL (or "website link") becomes inactive in the future.
- Click on Preview when you're done filling out the 'Cite (web/news/book/journal)' to make sure that the reference is correct.
- Click on Insert to insert the reference into your editing window content.
- Click on Show preview to Preview all your editing changes.
- Before clicking on Save page, check that a References header ==References== is near the end of the article.
- And check that {{Reflist}} is directly underneath that header.
- 7. Click on Save page. ...and you've just added a complete reference to a Wikipedia article.
You can read more about this on Help:Edit toolbar or see this video File:RefTools.ogv.
Hope this helps, --Shearonink (talk) 06:43, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
- To use this message, place
{{subst:User:Shearonink/ref}}
on User:talk pages when needed.
Just for reference...
[edit]Hi. Thank you for contacting me. I believe that you can go to Wikipedia:Teahouse, WP:reference desk or WP:Help desk. Since you've been new for almost one year, have you checked WP:tutorial? Go there if you haven't yet. --George Ho (talk) 22:15, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
Survey Invite
[edit]I'm working on a study of political motivations and how they effect editing. I'd like to ask you to take a survey. The survey should take 5 minutes. Your survey responses will be kept private. Our project is documented at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikipedia_%2B_Politics.
I am asking you to participate in this study because you are a frequent editor of pages on Wikipedia that are of political interest. We would like to learn about your experiences in dealing with editors of different political orientations.
Sincere thanks for your help! Porteclefs (talk) 15:34, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Colonel Sanders. I noticed that when you added the image to the infobox, you added it as a thumbnail. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:
|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]
Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:
|image=SomeImage.jpg
.
There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption
. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks! [edit]Hello, I'm SummerPhDv2.0. I noticed that you made a change to an article, Michelle Thomas, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so! If you need guidance on referencing, please see the referencing for beginners tutorial, or if you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Adding quoted hypocorisms to opening sentences
[edit]Hi. I saw you added a hypocorism in quotation marks to the opening sentence of Dick Van Dyke (in other words, Richard Wayne "Dick" Van Dyke
). Per MOS:NICKNAME, we don't do this. English speakers generally know that "Dick" is a short form of "Richard", so it's not necessary to point this out. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 08:23, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
I see. So Mary Frances "Debbie" Reynolds
is acceptable for Debbie Reynolds' page because the nickname is not a shortened version of her given name?
...Or should it really be Debbie Reynolds (born Mary Frances Reynolds; April 1, 1932 – December 28, 2016)
?
I segwayed because this has been on my mind and I want to know. Your input is appreciated. Clarawolfe (talk) 04:55, 10 January 2018 (UTC)
Infobox image
[edit]I am not sure if pictures are covered under the recent ArbCom discretionary sanctions, so I've decided against placing them, but please discuss the Barbara Bush image on the talk page and seek consensus before engaging in a slow burning edit war over it. Thanks. TonyBallioni (talk) 02:52, 20 May 2018 (UTC)
Ok. I submitted my suggestion. I guess I have a hard time seeing why anyone would think the side-profile shot is worthy of Mrs. Bush, but we’ll see what other contributors think. How long does the arbitration have to last? Just curious. Thank you. Clarawolfe (talk) 07:19, 20 May 2018 (UTC)
Infobox DS note
[edit]Please carefully read this information:
The Arbitration Committee has authorised discretionary sanctions to be used for pages regarding discussions about infoboxes and to edits adding, deleting, collapsing, or removing verifiable information from infoboxes, a topic which you have edited. The Committee's decision is here.
Discretionary sanctions is a system of conduct regulation designed to minimize disruption to controversial topics. This means uninvolved administrators can impose sanctions for edits relating to the topic that do not adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, our standards of behavior, or relevant policies. Administrators may impose sanctions such as editing restrictions, bans, or blocks. This message is to notify you that sanctions are authorised for the topic you are editing. Before continuing to edit this topic, please familiarise yourself with the discretionary sanctions system. Don't hesitate to contact me or another editor if you have any questions.TonyBallioni (talk) 02:53, 20 May 2018 (UTC)
- As I said above, I'm not quite sure if pictures are covered by this, but it is just letting you know that infoboxes are an area in Wikipedia where there is a special administrative situation. It does not imply wrongdoing at all. TonyBallioni (talk) 02:54, 20 May 2018 (UTC)
Adding Photos to Wikipedia
[edit]I understand the physical process of adding a photo to Wikipedia, but I’m afraid I don’t understand how a photo qualifies to be added. It’s seems very convoluted and arduous. Must they all be old? If another website is using a 20+ year photo, shouldn’t it be ok here? What markings/copyrights does one need to look for?Clarawolfe (talk) 01:59, 21 May 2018 (UTC) Clarawolfe (talk) 01:59, 21 May 2018 (UTC)

[edit]Do not use multiple IP addresses to vandalize Wikipedia, like you did at Patty Duke. Such attempts to avoid detection or circumvent the blocking policy will not succeed. You are welcome to contribute constructively to Wikipedia but your recent edits have been reverted or removed. If you continue to vandalize Wikipedia you may be blocked from editing without further notice. - FlightTime Phone (open channel) 00:36, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

I don't appreciate being harassed. I didn't do anything wrong. I dont even know what multiple IP addresses means. Im on my mobile. I wanted to contribute with a photo that showed Patty as an accomplished adult. She had a life past that of her troubled childhood. I wished to honor that. I posted a new chat on her talk page, and I will be following up. Mahalo 2601:1C1:8102:1707:25FA:ED64:3A00:147B (talk) 00:51, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
Non-free image use
[edit]Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. We always appreciate when users upload files. However, it appears that one or more of the files you have uploaded or added to a page, specifically Barbara Mandrell, may fail our non-free policy. Most often, this involves editors uploading or using a copyrighted file of a living person. For other possible reasons, please read up on our Non-free criteria. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:48, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
- If you want to use an image for the main infobox, you can use any of the ones found in c:Category:Barbara Mandrell. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:49, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

[edit]Academy Award for Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress
[edit]The tables are missing from the four above articles that indicated nominees and winners in a given year. They’ve been deleted and not in a tidy way; the table keys indicating how the winners are highlighted, still remains. I made a note changing ‘Table Key’ to ‘Table is Missing; Sept 2020.’ I was hoping to seek some assistance that way. Does anyone know why this was done and how it can be fixed? [edit]Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.
When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:
Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)
You can use the edit summary field to explain your reasoning for an edit, or provide a description of what the edit changes. Summaries save time for other editors and reduce the chances your edit will be misunderstood. For some edits a summary may be quite brief.
Please provide an edit summary for every edit you make. With a Wikipedia account you can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. Thanks! GA-RT-22 (talk) 04:54, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

[edit]Hello. I have noticed that you often edit without using an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This helps your fellow editors use their time more productively, rather than spending it unnecessarily scrutinizing and verifying your work. Even a short summary is better than no summary, and summaries are particularly important for large, complex, or potentially controversial edits. To help yourself remember, you may wish to check the "prompt me when entering a blank edit summary" box in your preferences. Thanks! GA-RT-22 (talk) 14:48, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

Dorothy Lyman and Beverly Archer edits
[edit]I have reverted your addition of dates to birth to Dorothy Lyman and Beverly Archer and a place of birth to the Archer article. Unfortunately, IMDb is not a reliable source for use in Wikipedia articles. Please see WP:IMDB for comments. - I’ll have to speak to Julia Sugarbaker about this. :-) Clarawolfe (talk) 02:17, 14 December 2022 (UTC)
Hi. I'm not sure what your intentions were on these article, but all you did was remove a cite and an important note from the infoboxes. Their date of births are already there. Escape Orbit (Talk) 10:53, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Their birthdays are not in either info box; just their current age. They've been blocked on both. It's interesting that is Ms. Lee and Ms. Carey and no one else. There is rivalry between fans of each artist and their hit Christmas songs. There is no reason why their birthdates shouldn't be listed in the Quick Info. box like everyone else. They left them in the body of the introduction, so why would it matter? Clarawolfe (talk) 08:57, 25 November 2023 (UTC)
- I think you need to check your browser or try another one. They are not blocked and visible to everyone else looking at the articles. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 13:54, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
- I fixed Ms. Lee's box. I went back thru the history of Ms. Carey's page, and found it had been removed, but the person who removed it has returned it since the writing of my note on the Talk page. No, it wasn't my browser. Every other person I looked up was just fine and dandy. Clarawolfe (talk) 03:04, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
