Moving river articles.

Please do not move UK river articles as you have been, WP:RIVER clearly states the previous titles are acceptable for UK rivers. Jeni ^(talk) 17:31, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but I don't read WP:RIVER that way. It says:

If different rivers with the same name exist, use bracket-disambiguation (e.g. Vils (Danube), Turiec River (Váh), Bistriţa River (Siret), Colorado River (Texas)).

and

Always use parentheses for the disambiguator for U.S. and Australian rivers, not a comma. For example Indian River (Michigan) not Indian River, Michigan which is actually a town. (New Zealand and British rivers have used the River, place format. For example River Wye, Derbyshire.

The first quote is pretty definitive. Given that, the first sentence of the second quote is actually redundant, but probably there because of the cultural propensity of North Americans to use commas in this way.

The bracketed third sentence does not say anything about acceptability, but is simply a note pointing out that we have previously got it wrong in some cases.

Whatever the reading of WP:RIVER, which I agree could be better phrased, the fact is that even before I started moving articles, UK rivers were named with an ugly mixture of comma and bracket disambiguation. I felt this needed tidying up, am relatively ambivalent as to which form is better, so took my lead from WP:RIVER, which I think fairly clearly indicates a community preference for bracket disambiguation of rivers.

However I will temporarily stop moving articles, to give you time to reflect and (if you wish) propose a clarification to WP:RIVER. -- chris_j_wood (talk) 17:46, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

I feel that WP:RIVER pretty clear as it is, there is certainly no consensus for the mass moving of articles as you did. The comma disambiguation is much more in keeping with how UK places are disambiguated. Jeni ^(talk) 17:53, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm very disappointed that you chose to revert my changes before contacting me. It isn't as if this was vandalism, rather than a disputed reading of a WP style guideline, which most emphatically is not clear. Also you claim there is no consensus for what I was doing, but consensus (or even lack of it) needs more than two people. Sorry, I'm out of country with only occassional internet access at the moment so I've only just caught up with this comment. Back in 2005 I was still learning how to use Wikipedia, and I obviously hadn't got to the 'cite everything' bit yet; I'm not even that sure that WP had. I can picture in my mind the page of the book I took that from, but I cannot remember the name.
